Best bet is to make a layer with a light tone beneath all your line work so the coloring becomes easier. I also use the Curve masking layers to do the shading when it comes to digital, keeping the light source in mind (and it's color if any). I'll generaly use multpile layers for each character, Ex: separate layers for clothing, hair, skin, eyes, floor etc. I'm still experimenting myself but this has given me better results so far. But really it seems like you're getting the hang of things already.
I've tried tutorials, and none of them work. My results never match, despite using the same equipment, techniques, even programs.
