How about a wizard running an experiment? Not exactly mischievous, but more of a "let's see if I can do this" situation.

Or a dragon does it to him, to create some loot for his cave that at least looks valuable, to lure in adventuers/prey.

If you already have a specific scenario in mind, you can perhaps just pick one of the trickster gods from mythology and use them for the role. Coyote, Raven, Wu Kong, Hermes, Loki...
