How did you even get one up D: ? I couldn't even find a 'how-to' when I looked into it a while back

It's not that hard. I actually had the ad forever, it just was nerves and a bit of anxiety (a lot) that kept me from putting it up, but the actual doing of it is pretty simple. There's a link (depending on the version of FA you're running) somewhere on the page that says 'advertise'. Just click on that and it's literally three steps. Couldn't be easier. Basically you email FA, present your ad, the url, and what it is. Wait for response. Pay money. Done.

Well that sounds simple enough... but does the ad have to be a .gif file or anything like that? Also the URL; does that mean I have to post the ad first before I can use it?

What are you talking about? As far as the format I think it does have to be a GIF since static ads are not very eye catching and tend to be the norm as far as I've observed. As far as URL it means what the ad is pointing to. Ie, your website. You wouldn't have the ad link to itself.

Oh, derp. I'm overthinking it. Most of the ads I've seen go back to the user's homepage. So all I really need is a gif to use as the ad, and then pay for the service... alright, that doesn't sound so bad

Yeah, including mine, though in my case it's my professional page since I do not currently have a website and want to keep it useful for when I publish my next four projects, rounding out phase one. If it linked to any particular book it would be somewhat limited. At least here I grow my audience.

Step 0. Go commission an artist.

It's what I did. It's really not that complicated.

How much will they charge for it?

I don't remember, because A) mine was years ago and B) it wasn't something they usually offer. But probably not much, given if you go for the small ad or even one of the larger ones, it's like a bunch of banners? Look at any FA ad. Odds are you'd have to commission original art, but you'd have to talk to an artist, ask if they can make one for you, and see what they say. If you want I can advise you on what to put in it (the ad).

How Do I Advertise on FA?
Step One - Send an e-mail to advertising@furaffinity.net, including your website address, a brief description of your site and (if you have one ready) include your ad as an attachment. If your advertisement is date/time sensitive, please be sure to note that in your initial e-mail. Please expect up to 3 business days (M-F) for a response.

Step Two - Ads and links will be reviewed for content and general quality. On rare occasions, ads may be rejected and sent back with comments as to why it was declined. This is done for quality concerns, and to help improve your ad (we want your ad to be successful!).

Step Three - Once your ad is approved, payment instructions will be sent via e-mail. Fur Affinity only accepts payment via Paypal.
