I've become a fair amount more cynical this year.

Anyway, one thing I've learned from 2020 is that we Americans? We don't really like being free. Being free implies things like personal responsibility and personal choices, and those are dangerous to the collective goal. No, we like feeling safe much better than being free, and we'll sacrifice everything to have this feeling. Our economy, our children's education, our personal autonomy and self-worth as human beings, you name it. Its the reason we still have to let ourselves get groped just to board an airplane, and why Edward Snowden's never coming home.
Can't say I feel optimistic for the next decade.

Some of them sure, but the ones that work for a living, those whom lost their livelihoods because of their jobs being taken from them. They are furious at the government. If anything, people are giving the middle finger to those that are enforcing these lockdowns and edicts. Well, that is what I see where I live anyway.
But if anything, we are American, and we've been through turmoil like this before. We will get through this, one way or another.
I still can't help but look on the dark side, though- the Patriot Act keeps getting renewed every year without so much as a whimper of protest since 9/11, and the NDAA is still on the books. No one complains.
