They don't want to pay coders or programmers to do an entire overhaul that could break the whole site. Yahoo! went through the same issues in the mid 2000s, for pretty much the same excuse.

And Yahoo has been going downhill for end user usability ever since. Every time they "fix" or "improve" something, they make it worse.

The truth is that hosting videos gets really expensive. They pile up and never go away, and it's trickier to serve them with good performance the bigger your site is. That's why everyone wants to try and offload their video hosting to third parties. It's why youtube embeds are everywhere, because it's one of the few places that can handle the load.

It's not an easy problem to solve.

Another thing is that user generated content is already a bitch to moderate, but video type content is an absolute killer. Imagine you're a moderator at a site tasked with having to remove content in violation of the site's rules. Think of how many pictures you could view and judge in 15 minutes. Compare it with a 15 minute video someone just threw up instead. You have to watch THE WHOLE thing in case they threw in something at 13:35 that makes the entire video have to be pulled down. Now obviously sites don't view every piece of content, they rely on people flagging things as the first filtration line to what gets sent to the moderators (the biggest sites have some kind of algorithm before and after this step to try and autodetect and autoflag things, but that's advanced tech). So you've got a 30 minute video someone flagged as "Unlawful use of copyright character" - again, you gotta watch the whole thing to figure out if that's true. And after watching it, you discover there was never a violation to begin with - it was erroneously or maliciously flagged.

So how many moderators do you need now to keep up with the load of maintaining the integrity of content on your site? This is why no one wants UGC video. It's why so many sites have bailed on it. It's why youtube is absolute garbage at moderation. Pathetically the only thing they can reliably flag is when you used 2 seconds of some copyrighted music because that can be done programmatically.

One option until they get around to implementing other video support is to upload your videos to youtube (unlisted of course) and embed the link in a journal here. Downside is, journals don't show up in your gallery and can't be faved, but you can always put screen shots there directing viewers to the journals.

Here's a suggestion: You can also do GIFs. Just slap some text in the corner referring to your Patreon and Twitter.

Flash in general STILL WORKS, if you have it installed.. just change your clocks back to before Jan 12 and it'll load properly.

Flashpoint fixes that easily. They got two packages to download, one is their stripped package, no FLV clips, games and such. It tips the scales at 50MB. Nice huh? The interface needs some tweaking, but it's navigable and has an index.

But the whopper is their Ultimate. If you wanted to download the internets, this is it, in Flash form. 501 Gigabytes (!) of torrent goodness. Good for packrats that have a spare 1 or 2TB USB drive laying around.01

S'ah, right! I took to accessing the application via my NAS array. I established a virtual drive folder on my NAS using ISCSI, then connecting it with my workstation, makes for partying goodness. No USB drives needed! ISCSI is far easier than it sounds, and anyone can do it with the Pro edition of Windows and a decent Synology NAS drive. I don't know if any other NAS array sports ISCSI, but if they do, then go for it.
