From what I've wrote in my own stories, the gum is heavily modified to produce liquid coming straight from the gum piece. Which if the individual turns blue, not only are they more flexible, but the oxygen breathing part stays the same, it's only when the blood cells are turned blue and produced/multiplied. Personally, the white cells are also duplicated to prevent you from getting sick, should you swell up. The only sick part is where the stomach is, but that's about it.

I've been thinking about creating the Wonka gum piece based off of two 2007 videos of actual human females trying out Wonka's gum piece. And while the videos are low quality, they did bring in insight of what possibly could happen to a human being in real life if they swell up to become a blueberry.

While I'm not into female inflation, I really like thinking about blueberry inflation from a biological standpoint.
