small woodtable, heavy paper (not your normal bond..) , your mechanical pencil or pencils, inking pen and erased. :D
the rest depends on what do you do more..

Nice concept with the digital art, but when it comes right down to it, a messenger bag or specific laptop bag does pretty well for that specific purpose.

The kit I'm planning will be wood construction, so a laptop may be out of the question due to weight/carrying concerns (assuming it's travel by foot/small wheely thing and not in the back of the car or something)

Well, things I always carry with me, if I am bringing my sketchbook: mechanical pencil + a pack of graphite, multiple sizes of inking pens, those click erasers plus a block eraser. That's bare minimum if I don't plan to be finishing anything. Nick carries all his stuff in an old eyeglass case. O:

Depends on what kind of an artist you are. Obviously the draftsman's best friend is his set of pencils and kneaded eraser, plus some sketchbook in an A5 or B5 size. If they use mechanical pencils, then assorted leads are essential too. Maybe some emergency charcoal would be thrown in too.

You make charcoal sound like rationing. :P

Well, it looks like what an army dude would eat when the food supply is all but gone. :P

Powerbars are more appetizing visually AND edibly than charcoal and that's saying a lot.

A compact watercolor set is always a nice thing to have; along with a couple small pencils and a bit of note cards to draw on (for efficient space usage)

From there, mix and match medium types to thine own desire?

I mean like, aside from a sketchbook.

It should be assumed that an artist has that stapled to them.

Carrying more than two genre of mediums at once. Not only is it more efficient, but it provides practice to having critical insight into what you think you will be using.

Of course, I'm not really an artist so uh

What if I mix watercolor and colored pencil? ;D

Well, usually watercolor is easily contained with itself, but I don't see why you can't like

combine pencils and colored pencils


after all, graphite is sort of a color of it's own :S :S :S

It makes less work for the actual paintin'. Less tinting and color buildup with paint and all >> Haven't done that lately though.

Hmm.. Well, unless there's like a sketchbook or firm drawing pad you'd definitely need some kind of flat hard surface to draw on for starters I imagine. Definitely a pencil or pen of some kind, with sharpener (or extra leads for the mechanical variety; nothing is more annoying than breaking your last lead and not having spares!), or bottle of ink for the old fashioned types who like drawing with quills :P Nothing big though! Probably get a basic set of drawing mediums, such as colored pencils, watercolors (plus a small thing of water, even if it's just an emergency supply should your water pen run dry and you forgot to refill it), markers.. crayons even :P Depending on what the artist works with! Uh... paper of some sort obviously. Perhaps a small assortment of various sizes, or the size preferred. Depending on how long you'd be away from home, perhaps a small pack of 10 or so pages? Maybe more if you're feeling rather artistic that day! :D

Perhaps even a pocket notebook, in case you get ideas that can't exactly be done where you're at for some reason or other (ranging from not appropriate to wrong supplies for the idea needed for some reason, or just can't pull anything out to draw just yet).
