Anti-Vaxxers: How the Media Created a Monster

-- DEVIANTART -- WEASYL -- SOFURRY -- TWITTER -- BLUESKY -- Long story short, media has given the impression that non-experts stories are of equal consequence to the decades of research and hundreds of papers when in reality it should be an open and shut case. This false balance news reporting largely stemmed out of news organizations wanting to make things seem "fair" when fairness is not always equal, especially when you are discussing something like public health.
One of the stories compared a lot of tainted food getting pulled, and in reality this falls into the false analogy fallacy, because vaccines and food products are not anywhere close to be similar.

So for me who works in a pharmacy to have people tell me that they do not trust the new COVID-19 vaccine really makes me viciously angry because this virus has left numerous people with permanent lung, heart, and other damage. And if you think getting shingles is more concerning than this, shingles is less likely to kill you or even cause permanent damage and virus that causes COVID-19 had been proven to cause serious and permanent life altering problems.
So for the love of all that is holy, Please get your vaccine, regardless of which one you get, get the vaccine, it has proven effective and safe with 0 risk of actually giving you the disease, especially because 2 of them, Pfizer and Moderna, are mRNA vaccines which simply give you body the instructions to build the protein spikes from the outer shell of the virus. A vaccine type that has been decades in the making.
But maybe with this, people will see just how effective vaccines are and how little harm they do. There was a huge push to eradicate Small Pox because of how devastating it was, and people got to see just how effective vaccines were, but now people don't see all that harm that can come without vaccines, so they have become blinded by a few fringe cases.
And we only this is mostly an issue in the US, cause I rarely hear about this being an issue outside of the US.

Now everyone wants to drown in the swamp.
Ultimately, it matters very little if I decide to take the Covid-19 vaccine or not. Those that are concerned, should take it. If it provides you comfort and relief, great. If I die, cool. Don't know why that should bother you. If your vaccinated, theoretically you are immune, so it shouldn't bother you that I'm not.
As for the J&J you are twice as likely to be struck by lightning in the next year than you are to see the blot clot issue that is being reported in all of 6 patients last I counted a few days ago. Also there is no data on if it is just correlation or causation, and the way the media has handled this is exactly what this video is commenting on, because scientific reporting is severely lacking in reporting things fully factually and creating this false balance scenario.
Vaccine do not just protect you, they protect those around you. So yes people should care if other people are getting the vaccine. It is sad that there are people who are getting it in their community but their community is severely against getting it. Other people believe the vaccine is killing people and it simply isn't there is no data to support it. And yet they are asking scientists for the burden of proof without being able to adequately produce reliable proof of their claims.
So I will say this, yes, it does bother me that people are not willing to get it, I think it should be strictly mandatory, and cruise liners and other event organizers are making it proof of vaccination mandatory, because while nothing is ever fully effective, we saw what can happen without and the cruise industry is the perfect example of it. So even if you do have someone who becomes a carrier, having everyone on board be vaccinated as a requirement would limit the spread and maybe even stop it cold before it could spread. Heard immunity only works if you have enough people vaccinated. It is the reason there has been resurgences of polio and measles as more people refuse to get vaccinated against diseases we know vaccines work on.
There is a potential chance that this virus will not go away and it will become a seasonal thing, but that will only happen if people leave avenues for it to escape the vaccines we have right now. Getting as many people vaccinated as fast as possible is our best course of action for stopping this very dangerous virus outright.
Guaranteed, there will be people that do not get vaccinated. There are people that don't vaccinate against the normal stuff that is supposedly required to go to public school, now, so I would just assume that it will not be going away.
And this is nothing like the flu, it is much worse, which it is becoming less deadly, it is also becoming more infectious in some areas which is even worse, because then it will lead to significantly more harm than the flu, so no this virus is more like measles than it is like the flu, and it is way more infectious at the moment. The only reason measles is so uncommon is because we have had years to vaccinate people and it is something that you can get even as a child and it is done to almost everyone on a very consistent basis. So of course with a nearly 100% vaccination rate, it is not going to have anywhere to spread to. And actually it is people refusing to get the vaccine that has led to outbreaks in small pocketed communities. And Polio of all things has started popping up in pockets from anti-vaxxers, so even with a small decrease in vaccination rate you are seeing outbreaks.
So thankfully with a 90% effectiveness in the vaccine means that we need about 60-65% vaccination rate to potential get rid of it, but if it remains below that number it could lead to more deaths, but even more people with permanent damage to their lungs, heart, brain, etc.
Viruses will become less fatal in order to survive, but far more infectious to the same goal. Small Pox for a long time was unfortunately both, and it took a massive vaccination campaign to get rid of it, I can only hope that this virus does not become a second small pox.
I did want to add that I appreciate your point of view and have learned a few things that I hadn't previously been aware of as well, so thanks!
I highly highly highly recommend sitting down and watching SciShow's episodes on the pandemic and another Youtuber by the name of DoctorMike who actually had an interview with an epidemiologist basically bust some myths about this virus and the vaccine.
So much of people's hesitancy is a result of bad communication from news organizations, politicians, and the like. And the fact I think this vaccine should be mandatory with exceptions made based on people's individual PCP's recommendations for or against it, should tell what a miracle both the Pfizer and the Moderna vaccines are. It is huge step forward in vaccine technology and while it does cause a much stronger reaction in most people, some have had fewer symptoms than a flu shot and people like me have had worse side effects, especially on the second dose of the Moderna.
I am far and away happy that I got the Moderna one, and I have had patients whose PCP has recommended the Moderna one because of it tendency to create a stronger immune response, but the media has given equal value to soccer mom's which should not be given the same level of authority as PhD's who have worked on this vaccine and have the specific knowledge that most soccer mom's lack.
But please all I ask is people get and read reliable information and make an INFORMED decision on it.
