Peter Rabbit and Peter Rabbit 2 movie reviews

MESSAGE INCOMING
I have absolutely no clue if anyone is going to even read this, but I'm gonna avoid spoilers in the off-chance that somebody DOES read it. There probably are a few accidentally though.
If you haven't already known, I am sort of a nut about Beatrix Potter and the world of Peter Rabbit. It hasn't been for very long -- I've really only gotten into it last February. But Peter Rabbit has helped me through a lot of rough times in my life already. But that's not what I'm here to talk about. I'm gonna give a review of the two Peter Rabbit movies, and share my opinion.
Peter Rabbit came out in February of 2018, but I only watched it last June. The plot is simple: Someone inherits Mr. McGregor's garden and he learns to like the rabbits, and the rabbits themselves learn a lesson by the end. There's sort of a two-way antagonist deal going on in this movie. Peter (voiced by James Corden) is just as much an antagonist as Thomas McGregor (played by Domhnall Gleeson). Reasons for disliking each other in the movie make sense, but friendly human woman Bea (played by Rose Byrne) is able to get them to meet in the middle in the end, due to a semi-sorta love triangle between Bea, Peter, and Thomas. But with Bea and Peter, it's more of an owner-pet relationship. It's a pretty simple story, but if you love the Peter Rabbit universe and their characters, I think it would be worth it. I liked it a whole lot myself. I adore the ending song, "I Promise You".
Peter Rabbit 2 came out last June and I saw it just a few days ago, so it is still fairly fresh in my memory. Another mostly simple plot. Peter and the gang are popular because Bea published a book, but people are seeing Peter as bad, so he runs off and joins a gang, but in the end realizes that family and friends are more important than being mischievous and rambunctious. Meanwhile Bea deals with executive meddling to try and make her rabbit pals more "hip" and "cool with the kids". There are much clearer, new antagonists in this movie, and as a result Peter and Thomas are more clear protagonists. Unfortunately there are no original songs in this one, instead the ending song being Supergrass's "Alright", partially sung by a squirrel voiced by Tim Minchin. It's a very tongue-in-cheek movie, often pointing out and making fun of several of the cliches that they go through. I thought this movie was really great too.
Now here's the part where I point things out that are part of both movies. The actors did a pretty decent job on their roles. The CGI for the characters is obvious, because real rabbits don't actually act that way, but it's realistic enough to blend in fairly nicely. Their personalities are largely changed from the books. Flopsy, Mopsy, and Cottontail all have a much bigger and prominent role than they did in the books. In the books, they were more background characters than anything else. The shining exemplar of being good in contrast to Peter's naughtiness. In the movies, they're often just as naughty as Peter is. Benjamin Bunny is the more level-headed sort, unlike in his book where he egged Peter into going back into the dangerous garden. There are a lot of pop songs in both of the movies, which sort of spoiled my enjoyment. I mean, I liked them, but I feel like for a story like this, a more traditional score would be appropriate. There are several running gags in both the movies, like a group of singing birds being knocked over in the first one, and Peter pulling stuff out of his ears and doing an annoying voice in the second one. The setting is beautiful, and was based directly off the Lake District in the UK, even if the movies are Australian.
If this sort of movie seems kinda typical for you, or you're faithful to the original books and don't like the idea of contemporary adaptations, then these are not the movies for you. But if you're willing to look past that and see the movie for what it is, I think you might enjoy it. They're nothing incredible to most. IMDb rates them mostly a 6/10. But as a big Peter Rabbit fan, I gave both of the movies a 9. I recommend them. Don't be like me though and try to find it online. Buy the DVD. But if you can't, I'm willing to DM you a link to a place where you can watch them online for free.
See you in another 6 months! :P
