Need some help running old 1990s PC games!

Does anyone have any good advice for how to download and run old PC games on a Windows 10 PC?
I'm trying to use VirtualBox to emulate certain Windows programs but I still can't get any DK CD-ROM downloads to work, and I'm trying to avoid having to buy actual CDs, so I'm at my wit's end by now...
Does anyone have any good advice or am I just fighting a lost cause, because I feel like I might me doing a thing or two wrong here...

I think it sounds possible I am just not great with old PC stuff. I mostly just run back ups of my PS2 games as of now. Now that was a hassle lol. You have to dump the systems bios, and then also rip the game discs yourself. not a ton of fun, but I'd think if you could do that a old PC game sounds simple enough, but I know things rarely areXP
I wish you the best of luck^^
These are the following methods I use:
A) GOG.com is the first, most legal option for old games, as there's a lot of re-released titles there.
B) Some games can function as low as Windows 3.1 - check what titles you have that are compatible. If so, "Dosbox" can run them. All it takes is a download of that version and installing it inside. Dosbox has the extra advantage of allowing one to freeze the CPU speed or adjust it on command.
C) For win95 titles, that's more tricky. I use Virtual PC 2007 on a dedicated Windows XP machine, as they are less backwards compatible.
E) Finally, in some cases,"ScummVM" can directly emulate some titles. Check their site for their list.
