Zeus vs Summer - NFL Pick Em Round 2 - Week 1
4 years ago
Rejoice! Rejoice, everyone! It's football season at last and I've managed to convince my good friend Summer to another friendly, season long challenge of picks. Sure, last year I lost by Week 15, but with all this experience I got, I'm pretty confident that I can make better picks this year. Week 1 is always tough to predict, but let's see if I can not have another 0-3 start.
To recap, here are the rules.
1. Summer and I will pick 3 NFL games based on the current spread. The favored team (represented by a negative sign) HAS to win by more than the listed number for anything to count. So if the spread is (-3), and the favored team wins by a field goal, that is a push. Neither side wins, and that is a loss on our ends.
2. We battle on a week to week basis. If we have the same outcome, that week is a push an no one gets a point. The winner of this challenge will get to choose what sort of kinky art they want involving the losing party.
With that said, let's not waste anymore time and jump into picking!

PICK 1
~ Jacksonville Jaguars beat and cover against the woeful Houston Texans as moderate road favorites. (-3.0)
I think this is a less risky pick now, despite the teams being in the same division. The Texans are predicted to be the worst team in the league by far, and I think Urban Meyer and Trevor Lawrence will want to make a statement in this first week. The Jaguars did burn me last year as I thought the Colts would stomp them, but new year, new teams. The Texans are a mess in every single category and I think they'll win one game by sheer luck and desperation this year. That game isn't today though!
Result: Jags 21 Texans 37 (LOSS)
For fucks sake! The Jags seriously may contend for the number one pick AGAIN. I'm just bad news when it comes to me involving my picks with such a terrible team. I should have realized team chemistry played a bigger role than I thought it would.
PICK 2
~ Washington Football team beat and cover against an overhyped LA Chargers team as super slight home favorites. (-1.0)
It's always difficult for teams to travel west for sure. And the public certainly is sleeping on a pretty solid Washington defense. I think this will be a back and forth game for sure, but I think a good defense will overcome an elite offense early on in the season. The Chargers should push for a playoff spot this year, but I have a good feeling Herbert could take some steps back this year. Come on, Fitzmagic. Don't blow it for me! Keep the legend going!
Result: Washington 16 Chargers 20 (LOSS)
Fitzmagic got hurt and the offense couldn't do enough to keep up with the talented offensive talent of the Chargers. A shame, but I can't really fault myself for trusting the home team here. Watch out, NFL! The Chargers are going to make some noise this year.
PICK 3 (UPSET SPECIAL OF THE WEEK)
~ Miami Dolphins beat the New England Patriots OUTRIGHT as road underdogs! (+3.0)
Yeah, I know. Picking my Phins in Week 1 bit me badly last year. However, I just think the Phins are better across the board in all areas minus the coach. I will be thrilled to see the continued crumbling of the Patriots way this weekend. Tua has EVERYTHING to prove this year. Coach Flores knows how to harass rookie QB's for sure, so I think he'll have the right gameplan to confuse Mac Jones. If the Phins can stop the run, I don't see how Mac is ready to carry an entire team this soon. I don't believe the hype.
Result: Phins 17 Pats 16 (WIN)
Sloppy performance from my Phins offense, but the defense once again stepped up to ruin Mac Jones's first career game. Hope they can keep it up at Buffalo!
OVERALL RESULT: 1-2 (TIE)
I was biting my nails that I'd go 0-3 for the second year in a row for week 1. But, glad my Phins saved the day from bad picks! Gotta make better choices next week if I want to survive.
Unofficial gut reaction picks below. NO SPREAD CONSIDERED! (Current Record 4-7). Bolded picks are ones that came true. Italicized is wrong picks.
Last year pick percentage: 65% (Pretty happy how I did last year)
49ers > Lions (My pick for the survivor raffle in Summer's server)
Falcons > Eagles
Bills > Steelers
Vikings > Bengals
Titans > Cardinals
Seahawks > Colts
Panthers > Jets
Browns > Chiefs (CAN'T MISS GAME OF THE WEEK)
Packers > Saints
Rams > Bears
Ravens > Raiders
SO MANY UPSETS IN WEEK 1! Geez. Poor betters.
