TL;DR: If you support yourself with only your art or craft, how do you do it? What are your struggles and triumphs?


Hey guys,

Slightly less happy journal than normal. I just… need to type this out I suppose and I wish to ask for advice. Everyone struggles with direction ad stagnation from time to time in their lives, but mine has almost been predetermined by family events. I have two older brothers. Both of which my parents tend to deem as being failures.

I am the 3rd child and was the ‘final hope’ if you like. That I would do well in highschool, and that I would go on through university/college doing some degree and go on to some high paying job.
The highschool bit was fine. I did very well and did more than my brothers ever did. Towards the end of year 12 I started to freak out a little as everyone does. What do I want to do as a career for the rest of my life? I don’t know- I have no idea- bloody hell I’ve only existed for seventeen years at this point. Out of desperation I choose a games design course. I like art and I like games, how could this go wrong?

I hated it.

I hated it so much I never want to go back to Uni. I loved the people I was with but being in a school environment again brought be so much stress and anxiety- drawing back on the pressure my parents put on me to do well.
I took a leave of absence hoping my fears would settle and I might be able to return to that course. Two years later I am as strongly against it as when I began.

My parents have tried hard to push me into some sort of other course- anything else. Dad wants me to be a nurse for some godforsaken reason- I am by far not the kind of person suited for that job or anything close to it.

Because of lack of experience from a young age I have struggled in getting any form of work. I used to have a casual job as a waitress for a little while. I did a few shifts but then they just stopped asking me back. So yes, I need to get some sort of work simply to have on my resume—I understand that. But it’s the age old problem. Can’t get a job without experience, can’t get experience without a job.
Even people with experience are going through hell trying to get work these days.

Though I will keep searching for another job of some kind be it retail or whatever, all this has led me to look at something I truly enjoy. I love fursuit making and I know I’m good at it. If I believe in my abilities and work harder than I ever have before, surely I can progress 8Bit-Works into a small business I can support myself with?

My parents certainly don’t think so.

And that’s almost what’s hardest. They supported me immensely with my initial foray into costume craft- why not now? When I really need their reassurance that I can do this- they turn around and snap at me- “Fursuit making isn’t a real job.” “You’ll never be successful enough to support yourself with this.” “It’s just a hobby.”
“Do something with your life.”

I can see the disappointment in my mother’s eyes. She has said to me “so you’re going to be just like your brothers, right?” Alluding to their ‘failure’ in life.
Yeah, I guess I am going to be like them. Only in that I don’t want to go back to university unless it’s for a small business degree. Which again they also don’t seem to believe in.

All this being said my parents aren't horrible people. They insist they say all these things for my own good and I truly do believe they only snap at me because they don't want me to struggle further on in life when I don't have them to help me. Though I understand that...It's difficult to make them understand me.

I’ve told myself I can’t let them get me down. My close friends and boyfriend have helped me so much, comforted me and told me to ignore them- That the ‘starving artist’ stereotype doesn’t have to be real.
But it’s gotten to the point where I severely doubt myself and by work.

I’m scared is the most honest response.
No, I don’t know if I can do this but I want to try… I look at other makers-  phoenixnest  ruffleddesigns  autumnfallings  skyprofursuits  lazylupe  lobitaworks  thatsfurredup and so many, many more—I want to be like them. Why can’t I be like them? If they can do it surely so can I.

I used to be so lazy…. But a swift figurative kick in the butt from  paramedicoyote cured that. I began working so much harder, and I’ve come to realise so much about myself and how easy I have had life.

I want to get better.

I want to do more.

I want to get a ‘proper job’ as well.

I want my parents to not see me as a failure.

But most of all I want to grow 8Bit-Works to a point where I can support myself.

And please, if you support yourself off of your art or your craft, please let me know how you do it and your struggles but most of all your triumphs. I know it must be hard- but if my heart is in this I need to know of the reality as well as the fantasy.

Wowww that was one hell of a week!

Hectic, but overall awesome!
I had the best time hanging out with my boyfriend and my friends- and I was surprised by just how many people recognised me/my suit! You guys are the best and are all so nice <3

I do believe the con could have been organised a bit better. There weren't many interesting panels and the fursuit games weren't coordinated well;; (if you got out at all, you couldn't participate in any of the next games! Ouch!)
If they had promoted the dance comp, I probably would have joined in-- but I didn't know about it or how to sign up. ;w; I was told they were having trouble with numbers/participation in the comp. They need to advertise it more!

I'm hoping next year will be better as I know FurDu recently changed ownership. Either way- I still had a lovely time and miss all of you dearly <3

Hey guys!
So unfortunately one of my cats, Pocket, has to go into the vet for surgery tomorrow.

I've had pocket for about 7 years now and she is the sweetest little thing. Smaller than the average cat but will nuzzle you to death with affection. She's named Pocket because one of our other grey cats is named Lint. Pocket and Lint.
The last picture in that little compilation is a photo of Pocket in a Pocket back when she was a kitten <3 Since she gave birth to the kittens pictured in the lower left she has been desexed of course.

Anyway, she has a growth in her ear that is interfering with her well-being. Whilst it is not immediately life threatening, it needs to be removed so that it doesn't become as such.
I love my pets and I do anything for them, but the vet care will cost upwards of $500.
So I'm going to open up for some commissions!

I would greatly prefer to mostly take on Hanging badges.

Wow so another year has passed and I'm still a derp. xD
Thanks for sticking with me guys :D I know I vanish from time to time submission wise but I am almost always here reading messages and checking other people's art posts.

I've been actively uploading stuff to FA for about 2 years now and I have just over 2000 watchers! Can't thank you guys enough for supporting me <3 Wouldn't be the artist or the person I am today without you guys.

19 is of course my last year of being a teeeeeeeeen so I'd better make the most of it right~

Wow. I had an awesome time- and it is all thanks to these lovely people  dorchette  furtitude  eagleironic  screaming-cayote  black-spectre  d-aiku and  riorioriorio as well as every other person who came and said hi <33 I held my first ever panel (PokeFurs on Saturday) with Emma and Cas and that went down great as well! Thanks so much to everyone who came to that. I was so nervous heh.

But yeah-
Friday was great, Saturday was better, and Sunday was the best.

I have a few stories from this con I could share but I'll choose one of my faves. In the evening, the squad decided we should get some fursuit photos along the Yarra River around sunset since screaming-cayote and eagleironic are both excellent photographers.
So we all suited up (despite the heat) and toddled outside. The whole photoshoot was so fun, and I'll have a million photos to share later on. Long trip short I thought a pole was a tree, fell off a fence, was tempted to jump into said river, and was literally scooped up off my feet by screaming-cayote and carried a bit of the way back to the hotel (Tim used to be a track runner and is fit as hell. I'm a freakin' princess lmao)
It was dorchette's first time suiting as well! She borrowed parts of my Umbreon suit to wear as a partial.

On the way back from the photoshoot the last Rave/dance party of the con was in full swing. They had that bass pumping and I could not resist. They had a circle going on, and people on the edges of the circle cheering on those dancing in the middle. When I got there the last person had just finished and people were egging me on to enter the middle.
...So I did.

I danced my little heart out and I went ham. <3
All this in a full fursuit.

Never go full ham- as soon as I started to slow down and I had finished my little bit I had to rush to exit the circle then rip my fursuit head off and take a breather. Almost passed out.

But naaahh after a rest in the hotel room and some babying by my friends I was totally fine xD


But yeah overall it was a brilliant time <33
I love my fur-squad so much and I can't wait to see them all again soon. Hopefully at FurDu!! Wink wink nudge nudge

Hell no. And if you do smoke, please don't come anywhere near my suits when you have a lit cigarette. Cig smoke smell (or other smoke smell) does not come out of faux fur.

Only in suit and if you ask first! And please be gentle. I know suiters are cute but there are people inside :'D tight hugs hurt.
