Posted 2 years agoI'm sure me 7 years ago didnt think FA was long for this world but look at them still kicking after all this time, ticking along and being wildly consistent in its mismanagement that it somehow has stayed.
Think I've made some mistakes, I'm sure ill keep making them. I hope everyone here is doing well and thriving, I come here a lot to mourn people I can never visit again

DID YOU KNOW SUMMERS GO BY FAST?
Posted 11 years agoBECAUSE OH MY GOD ITS THE END OF AUGUST.
No really. I'm kinda dying over here. Between my new mate
tobifur, graduating college, looking for a car, and generally my life being in UTTER DISARRAY I am in shambles when it comes to organizing my time. So sorry if I have skipped or lost any of you in the fray! It's just a crazy part of my life right now.
When I get a car I'll be traveling to Canada, Oregon, and California to check out art colleges. I'd really like to move into an illustration degree of some kind and maybe take a few business classes so I know how manage a small freelance business better or I don't know just something so I have a job of some kind somewhere. I'm currently unsure WHICH one I'll goto but I'm compiling a small list and Portland Oregon has a school that seems to offer what I want. I'm also in the process of deciding where I'll get a part-time job until I DO move away for all of eternity.
IN OTHER NEWS.
Jeeeze there's a lot of fan art for Five Nights at Freddy's.

What's your little/cubby like?
Posted 11 years agoI wanna know what your little side is like. What makes them feel better? What games do they like to play? Are they a mommies kid
or a daddies kid? What colors help them feel small and cubby? Are there clothes that they specifically wear and are special? And
really anything else you can think of! I Like getting ideas from others and how they play, why not share yours? :)
Also, what age is your little?
Edit: you guys don't have to adhere to this like a list! Just say what you like doing
when you're little! Silly babyfurs.

Holding myself back
Posted 11 years agoMan. I hate digital art I realized. Not to say I HATE digital art -peices-. That would be absurd. They are beautiful and can very well do a lot of what traditional can. Digital meduims are simply a very round about way of rendering and therein lies the problem for me. When I work in digital, it always feels like I'm 2-3 steps away from attaining what I want. I feel hampered, like someone's putting a veil between me and my art. and I hate it. I'm one to experiment but I expect results when I experiment and digital just plain feels like it's mocking me! When I paint traditionally, my work looks leagues above what I post here and I'm continually sad that that is the case. :/
But I guess that's my own fault, I don't draw enough with digital for me to get used to its drawbacks. Phooey. Gunna try to finish gem's thing today, I haven't because the way I chose to color and shade drives me bonkers and is something I will NOT be doing again. D:

Alternatives to paypal?
Posted 12 years agoHey guys, I've been looking for alternate methods to take your money for sketch and, later on, full scale commissions. BUT I really
don't like the paypal option. That company has had SO many problems with it and so many people being locked out of their money it
isn't even funny.
SO.
Does anyone have any suggestions to alternatives? :O

Rainbow Gathering and The Hectic July (ABBEY'S GOING AWAY)
Posted 12 years agoOh man, out of the frying pan and into the oven.. or something like that.
Basically, the end of this quarter ended disastrously thanks to my depression. I was hoping to re-coup and scramble
together art, finish paintings I was working on throughout the quarter, and just in general use my time wisely during the
month of july, but nope! Time to go on a big two week camping trip in the middle of the woods of Montana with a bunch of
hippie dippies and live life disconnected for a bit. And I didn't know about this until about a day or so ago. :I
To add to that I'm also going to New York for a wedding with family, which will be awkward because I know basically none of
my family...
SSOO. I'm now scrambling to throw supplies together so I can haul my ass out the door, getting my car tuned up and the
fans fixxed, and generally being a stress ball as I get my hair cut and try on clothes for the wedding. I leave sat-sun. This
is going to be insaaaaannnee.
So I love you all, but Toodles!

DEAR ARTISTS: Sketchbooks, USE THEM!
Posted 12 years agoBlah blah blah blah. Here I go again.
Something I have noticed is that people seem to shut down their art careers or progress or even just sketching, all
because they can't access a computer. http://www.meh.ro/wp-content/upload.....meh.ro3125.jpg
That's really really a bad way to get better. In fact, that's probably one of the things holding some people back. You
don't get better by only doing fully rendered pieces of art over and over and over again. It's good for you, but it can
also stagnate your style. Why? Because instead of focusing on ironing out the kinks of your work by sketching on a
real pad of paper, you're constantly working on these big pictures and making mistakes that could have been caught
much earlier on. I bet if you looked at someone who sketched a lot in their down time from painting a masterpiece
to someone who only wanted to do full paintings, the one who sketched would be doing more refined and tighter
pieces that look simply better. No, you're not working on your colors, but colors don't matter if you can't accurately
shade in black and white. Sure you may not be focusing on painting, but you're learning form, figure, and correct
perspective. You're focusing solely on the technical details, or maybe you're fleshing out a character, or maybe
getting that whole background thing figured out.
But the best thing about a sketch pad is that it is YOUR sketchpad. You can draw whatever you want and you don't
ever have to let it see the light of day. This is your place to make mistakes and be frustrated, not on the canvas
when all you want to do in hunker down and let the art flow.
So.. next time you're bored and without a computer. Remember, artists were drawing for thousands of years
without them, I think you can too.

Art Lesson Time!
Posted 12 years agoYou silly kids. Lately I've been hearing about and reading through many different peoples art, and something has come up
I have to address. The amount of layers some use in a piece of art and why it may be a detriment to their learning
process.
::LAYERS IN DIGITAL ART::
What are they And why are they used?
Well for those not in the know, All art programs start with One single piece of 'paper' that you may draw on that is
whatever size the artist specify's. This is your canvas. However, inside that canvas you can have 'layers'. Say you have a
light sketch as the base for your painting. You can add a 'layer' on top of the sketch to ink the sketch into refined
linework. Now you have two layers. Whats awesome about this is that even though your line work AND your ink look like
they are on the same canvas, they really are on two different invisible canvas's!
So now you can turn off the sketch, erasing the bottom without touching your beautiful line work. I wont explain further,
If you want to know more, simply look up a video tutorial on youtube about them to get a visual reference.
Why I'm annoyed
LET ME GET THIS OUT OF THE WAY. Whatever helps to achieve your artist vision trumps my own grumpy musings. If you
need 50 layers for basic line art and blocked in colors then go for it. You're free to do that and I can't stop you nor will I
try to.
BUT LET ME SAY THIS.
You don't need that many layers. You don't. You really really don't. Most professional concept artists don't even use that
many layers. If they do, there are good reasons for it like showing off different compositions of the same image to a
client.
This is what bugs me about digital art and beginning artists, people learn to use the easy route and over complicate
things by over using tools. Layers are there to separate things that absolutely need to be separated or using effects like
textures. They can be used efficiently and very much help to achieve some very stunning art work. But if you're using
them to avoid mistakes and over using them to fix things than I think you're missing the point of using layers.
Mistakes are nice. Mistakes are organic. Mistakes help you learn. I will paint an entire painting in Photoshop in JUST ONE
LAYER. ONE. let me repeat that again. ONE. Lineart (if needed), color, shading, detailing. It's all done in one go.
Sometimes I don't even -gasp- use Ctrl+Z. OH THE ANGUISH.
I also do this outside of photoshop, it's called painting 'traditionally' and I highly recommend it.
Going without layers from time to time is good, it helps you cope with mistakes and it helps you learn to live with the
imperfections of your art. But why would you want imperfections? Well, gee, because they add to that whole 'style' thing
that everybody is so desperately searching for! It also helps you learn to make very precise gestures and strokes that are
damn near 'perfect' everytime, since you really can't mess it up as much. And if you do? You can paint over it, fix it
quickly. Imperfections are challenges that make you work for your art, Embrace them!
So maybe next time you open up Sai or photoshop.. challenge yourself to use less. Use what is only needed, limit yourself
to a few layers, maybe 4-5 MAX.
Er.. sorry for the long rant.
TL;DR Abbey's picky.

Art is uniquely cool.
Posted 12 years agoSit 30 random people down in one room, give them a pencil, and tell them all to draw something, anything really. An elephant, a nice day, their friends, or a scarey face. It's silly to think about, but then you look at everyone's drawings. Each is different, each picture has these little quirks about them that makes it unique to the artist. Even at very simple and beginning stages of art, you can tell some people naturally enjoy more jagged and straight lines to smooth and flowing. Some people think with boxes while others will draw in circles. It's fun to watch, but it also brings up a very interesting point.
Why are so many artists on FA clones of eachother?
To think, someone could be drawing some fantastical thing, some beautiful and creative gesture that has it's own unique style added to it. But we get more foxes drawn like disney or whatever big name artist is currently trending. Some get reasonably lost in the sea of tutorials, so they just mimic what they like. Which in some ways is okay! Over the years, even I have picked up a couple tricks that help me from other artists. But an artist needs to branch out from just tutorials and samey cartoon characters.
Now I know most of you aren't interested in getting a fine arts degree and just want to draw cute animal people. So let me give you some simple advice. Don't reference your drawings from other artists. Reference your drawings with REAL animals, and then try and add that cartoonyness. Don't worry if you don't get it right the first time. Thats fine! Don't worry if you don't create things all that well the 4th, 8th, or twentieth time. Just work on blending reality with your natural quirks and see what comes out. Many people think their style is boring because they stare at it all the time, but really it looks weird and interesting and something new! A benefit to this is also that you can never run out of references. There are THOUSANDS of pictures of every species online, and they're all distinct. Learn to see the differences between a fox and a wolf and try to make them look different. Wanna know how a bunnies ears flop against their head? Look at a bunnies ears! Really, it's that simple. Go out and make art, take a hint from the artists of old and study real life!

Post-TFF Report.
Posted 12 years agoNow that I have time to sit down for a moment... TFF was a success! and a great trip to help me recharge and remember why I goto these things. Basically, everything you really need to know is..
-Abbey Got shmammered
-I played the hub caretaker and helped a lot of little ones find their place in the convention
-I got to meet an artist I've been dying to meet for a while
-And that things were generally cubby and busy
I also got to visit the nursery again and take some awesome photo's I didn't get to last time. So I'm all happy about that.
Otherwise it was a standard amazing convention, I will have to go back next year if finances allow it. Thank you so much to all
who made it a funderful con!

Addiction to the internet.
Posted 12 years agoSo, I have a very.. stubborn mindset. I dislike admitting weakness and I especially dislike it when I know that it's for the best.
Because then it means that I really need to be responsible.
So I'm going to say this now and probably struggle with actually going through with it. But it's much easier then dealing
with the actual consequences of not following through. But I basically need to re-think how I work and how I function.
Last quarter at my college I failed classes that I should have passes. A large portion of that was due to depression. But..
at the same time, a lot of it was because when I should have been working, I was messaging my furry buddies.
This makes sense to me since I've been doing it since forever. I mean, you guys have helped me through my trans issues,
made me feel welcomed and comforted when everything else seemed lost, and generally made me feel 10x happier when I
talk with ya. You guys are a HUGE emotional comfort to me. and I LOVE that.
But, because I cling, I tend to cling hard, and I've suffered for it. I spent late nights looking at furry porn and IMing friends
instead of working on projects. I'd get distracted by reddit or furaffinity and then never get back to my work. I know
people use ADHD as an excuse, but there are times when I see why I have it. I'll be working on something for 5 minutes,
but then I'll see an IM pop up and then 2 hours later realize "oh wait, I just barely got further on this 3D model.." then
feel guilty, work for 5 minutes, wash rinse repeat with another IM or some other distraction. It's a detriment to my studies
and I'm tiredof not going anywhere with my art.
So basically, I need to stop signing onto messengers as the first thing I do when I log onto a computer. I need to limit my
access to FA and other sites as a reminder I should be doing other work. Am I leaving? Oh heavens no. But I'm not going
to be online anywhere near as often. (if anything, I may log on to talk to only ONE person). Otherwise, I always have text
if you REALLY need to contact me.
Love you all.
PS: still going to TFF. No way in hell I'm passing that opportunity up.
Because then it means that I really need to be responsible.
So I'm going to say this now and probably struggle with actually going through with it. But it's much easier then dealing
