Commissions Open! - and other things
Posted 12 years agoFirst off, I'm back and Commissions are OPEN! ~~~
Check out my new Commission Chart for more info! <3
And in regard to other events taking place in the FA community, I'm going to stick around for now at least and play it by ear. I'm more active anyway on my Tumblr (Pencilcat.tumblr.com) anywho, so if you want to see a ton more art, follow me there.
So yeah. How've you all been? 8)

Well goodness, I missed a lot. Everyone's leaving???
Posted 12 years agoSo as noticed I've been pretty absent from FA for a bit. Things got busy, and sometimes whenever I did check the site it was down (so I gave up for a while).
I joined Weasyl the other day to check it out, and it came up a LOT that people were leaving FA for Weasyl so I thought I'd log back in here to see what's up.
And indeed atleast 10 journals in my watchlist were all about leaving FA and not coming back. I'll admit I know virtually none of the staff/senior members except Dragoneer (by name only), so I'm left scratching my head about who's who and what exactly went down.
So I guess my question is, for someone like me who rarely interacts with the vast majority of FA, is the issue big enough for me to leave shop too? Anyone have an neutral opinion on the issues?
And of course the day after I join Weasyl I can't load the site anymore :c

Character/Creature Adoptions?
Posted 12 years agoWho would be interested if I offered/sold creature and character adoptions?
I've seen a lot of other people do them, and I think it would be a lot of fun. I'd create a creature and/or character and put it up for auction (or first takers). I certainly have no shortage of design ideas.
Any particular style/creatures you'd like to see?

State of the Union....err, Artist
Posted 12 years agoHi everyone! Been a while, eh?
First off let me reassure you, I am not dead! The past few months have been rather stressful and extremely busy for me. Here's why:
Back to the classroom! I enrolled and started classes for a graphic design certificate. While the classes aren't hard per-say (only taking two), they are time-eaters. Graphic design is such a different mental process compared to regular illustration! Only 3 more weeks till the semester ends! Phew! Thankfully I'm actually kind of ahead on the final projects, so hopefully no crunch-time.
COMICS! One of the more exciting pieces of news is that I have been working on some things for Boom! Studios. I did colors for a short Regular Show story, and a cover for Bravest Warriors (which I'll show once they are announced). These had some very short and quick deadlines that demanded my immediate attention, but they were a huge opportunity so not one I could pass up.
My dayjob has been all over the place. I work for a petsitting company, which normally is great (I get paid to play with puppies). Hours are a bit unpredictable, but usually flexible. However, much like everything else in my life, things never stay easy. My boss is going to Africa for several months in the fall, and has chosen me to run her business (ugh, responsibility). Her business is expanding rapidly, so much that we've been hiring new staff. ... Staff that doesn't seem to want to stick around. We've already lost 4 people and had rehire just as many (one quit on the spot, another fired). Which means I usually get stuck with many of the extra hours on the spot. :T We're working through it, but I"ll admit it's work I don't want to deal with >_<
Another tough struggle for me this winter has been with my family. I don't usually talk about my personal life this much, but this winter both of my aunts were diagnosed with cancer. My family is small and close-knit, so having both of them diagnosed so quickly was a shock and a bit of a scare (both are my mother's only sisters, so that a bit scary for she and I). They both had surgery and are going through chemo. It's a tough waiting game to see how well treatment will work. My family has always been extremely healthy, so we've been a bit unprepared on how to handle this. v_v
And that leaves me with bits of time here and there for commissions. *lies down*
I just finished a rather large piece, which while fun, I'm glad is done. It was another bookcover that had a deadline, hence it's priority. NOW things have just finally calmed down. Classes are manageable, work I can deal with, and I only have a few more weeks till I'm off for the summer (both school and work). I recognize I have commissions that are WAY overdue, and I want to thank everyone for their patience (I think about them allll time time *guilt guilt guilt*). My #1 goal is to get them all done ASAP!
So how have you all been? I feel so bad for neglecting this place :c
p.s. I tend to update/blab more frequently on Tumblr now. Pencilcat

Commissions Closed
Posted 13 years agoClosing Commissions for now! If you've already sent me a note recently you're good.
Sorry things seem a bit slow. I recently got a new job and some freelance artwork projects which I've been juggling a bit, but I've got a pretty good schedule finally, so yay productivity! I've got some super-awesome commissions and artwork to work on, so look forward to those.
Anywho, how's everyone? I feel bad for not making journals or commenting that frequently here (I'll admit I've been living on Tumblr a lot)

Limited Special: Cell-Shaded Speed Commissions $25
Posted 13 years ago- Cell-Shaded Speed Commissions for 25$ -
Examples: #1 #2 #3
They are quick, loose yet fully colored and cell-shaded. Either transparent BG or flat-gray BG. Two exceptions - super complex characters may be reduced in detail. (ie. I won't be drawing every single scale). No progress sketches. Like I said, these are speed drawings so once I start, I work from start to finish. But you've seen what I've drawn, including the rest of my gallery, so you should have a good understanding of my style. Yes, I can/will draw fanart and people/non-creature characters. (Fanart with some exceptions...)
Send me a note if interested or have questions! :D
I'll keep this offer open for maybe a week or two depending on the response. So this is a limited-time offer.

I have a few Im working on now (but Im in the middle of packing), but once I get all settled in to my new house/apartment, I plan on jumping right into commission work. :>
My super-organized Commission Chart is here -> http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6329154/
If you need more examples of my work, check out my gallery. If you would like specific examples or have any questions, just ask. My e-mail is AbelPhoe @ gmail.com

Hand Surgery + Tumblr
Posted 13 years agoHi all, sorry for my general overall quietness. Shortly after moving I accidentally cut a tendon on my left hand, which required tricky surgery to fix. v_v It's recovering, slowly, (thank goodness I'm righthanded), but it's been a huge annoyance overall.
Also I just wanted to let people know, while I'll still update and check on this site frequently, I'll mostly be active over at my Tumblr http://pencilcat.tumblr.com I post most of my sketches over there, plus whatever other cool things I find :P

Moving~~
Posted 13 years agoSorry for my quietness. I'm actually in the process of moving! I'm temporarily moving back to Maine, but I have plans to move down to Savannah, GA in August! So I've been a crazy person with packing, moving, making plans, (quit my job....ahh yes) and trying to finish things (I've been brought on to do a comic for an anthology, so I've been very busy trying to make deadline).
Tomorrow (Monday) is the big move day, and Tuesday+Wednesday is traveling/recovery time, but by Thursday I'll be back with art and things! I have sooooooo many things I need to catch up on =A=
So....yeah! Let's hope I survive with my sanity intact! (I'm an extremely paranoid packer/traveler. I always expect worse-case scenario =A= )

Painting
Posted 13 years agoAhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Contract work is done (for now) and I can breathe easily again \o/
Painting painting lots of painting~~
I realize I've been pretty quiet here. I've somewhat moved to Tumblr (because it's so addictive...) so most of my quick sketches and rambling nonsense can be seen there. http://pencilcat.tumblr.com
More soon!! :D

Office Job
Posted 13 years agoI promise I'm not dead! =A=
I recently got a full-time office job (to pay bills). It's nice and stress-free, but is also a 8-5 M-F job, so my online-time has been severely cut to the handful of hours after work (and weekends). I apologize for the super-slowness in commissions, but I assure you I am working on them! (just a bit slower....). Things have been going on, just not so much online ._.
I now fully appreciate weekends and days I can sleep in *not a morning person*

Update - New Apartment Aquired!
Posted 14 years ago(lol, copy-paste from Tumblr)
Woot, so yeah, finally (mostly) settled into the new apartment. Internet is all set up, so no more leeching off of the neighbors (who we've yet to actually seeā¦)
Finally have furniture too! We went to Ikea, which I had never been to before. Really interesting place. Some of the stuff was awesome cheap (and cheaply made) but other stuff seemed stupid-expensive.
Still waiting for my desk-chair though. Come-on UPS, stupid being stupid and deliver it already! *shakes fist*
It should figure, that a week after getting here is snows a lot (for Seattle, more like a minor annoyance to me). Of course no one in city seems to have the tools or logic to deal with snow, so none of it has been plowed or even shoveled. Which super-sucks because it rained today and now all that snow has become wet-heavy slush, which is ten-times more annoying. >_>
Derp derp. So yeah, trying to get back into super-productivity. I'm still in the process of looking for a job to pay rent, but like most job-hunting it is a slow and agonizing process. So for now freelance and commissions are my only source of income. I'll post an updated commission-info thing here later. Commissions I have queued are top-priority and will be updated regularly.
So, transition to the big city is complete. It's still feels really different (and I will not deny I am a bit homesick). Lack of a car is kind of an inconvenience (especially when a lot of the better stores are so far out), but I'm working on ways to get around it (Lol, city buses are amusing).
Next order of business is to figure out how to get a nice size fishtank or two home on the bus. (for fish and possibly ball-python <3 )

Update + Gift Exchange
Posted 14 years agoHi all! Sorry I've been quiet for so long (here anyway). Things have been kind of blah for me.
-Few weeks ago my tablet officially died. It's been sent to be repaired, so hopefully only another week or two until I get it back!
-Last week I had all four of my wisdom teeth pulled =A= I never had any sort of surgery/medical condition before (the worse things I ever had is a cold and the chicken pox when I was 5), so it was a totally new situation for me. While the surgery went fine, my body apparently hated the meds I had to take, as I developed side-effects for all of them (dizziness, severe nausea, fatigue etc.). Especially the pain meds, which I kept throwing up (not fun!). Then one of the lower sockets refused to heal, and since I was already having trouble with the pain meds, it caused me quite a bit of pain/trouble. Thankfully Things have finally started to heal up (I can eat again!), and I'm only on an antibiotic.
-Yesterday was my birthday! I am now officially 24 (I'm old....)
So....hopefully now things will start getting back into a routine for me. ^^;;
Oh! I almost forgot. I'm hosting a Festival Secret Santa Gift Exchange over on DeviantArt! Check out all the info here! http://abelphee.deviantart.com/jour.....Open-268849635

So....hopefully now things will start getting back into a routine for me. ^^;;
Oh! I almost forgot. I'm hosting a Festival Secret Santa Gift Exchange over on DeviantArt! Check out all the info here! http://abelphee.deviantart.com/jour.....Open-268849635
Commissions and NaNoWriMo
Posted 14 years agoTo my commission people, sorry about the slowness in getting your commissions to you. Things have been a wee bit hectic for me the past week or so. The chaos has been settling down, so expect some notes from me soon. :> (pray my tablet holds out though!)
Second, if you haven't been following my tumblr, I've decided to be impulsive and signed up for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). For those unfamiliar with NaNoWriMo, basically it's a challenge to write a 50,000 word novel in one month (Nov.1 - Nov.30). What possessed me to do this, I don't know. But I'm going to give it my all, and see what I can accomplish. Feel free to add me as a buddy, username: PencilCat. (let me know who you are?)
On my tumblr I'll probably post snippets and info about the story as I go along.
omg November already. Birthday #24 is sneaking up on me.... >_>

Wacom Intuos 4 reviews? Tablet may be dying.
Posted 14 years agoSo I had my first heart attack with my tablet today, when the connection started flickering on and off. Which means the wire connection is starting to become loose. :<
It seems to be working fine now, but I know from experience it's only a matter of time before it starts to deteriorate.
My second heart attack occurred when looking at prices for the Intuos 4 tablets 0_o
And then I started reading the reviews....
Apparently Wacom Intuos 4 models have gotten a lot of bad reviews for chewing through pen nibs like crazy (2-3 days!?), USB connection issues, and the surface area is much rougher. This makes me extremely nervous, as I will have to eventually buy a new tablet. Intuos 3 models are only sold as used on sites like Ebay....
Anyone use an Intuos 4 and have/don't have these issues? I wouldn't mind an honest opinion from someone who owns one.
Thankfully this doesn't seem to be a pressing matter, but something that I will have to deal with eventually. :/
[Update] after some research Wacom may still offer repairs for Intuos3 models, so I may just do that instead (much much cheaper option!)
