Scientific Name: Homo Draconis Angelus
Common Name: Purity Dragon
Nicknames: Aether Dragons, Mist Dragons, Holy Dragons
Appearance
The Feral version of the species have an elongated slender body with 6 feathered, almost Angelic wings, though not from birth. Initially, the young were born without any WIngs, though years of being hunted and Darwinian Evolution led to young being born with a single set of wings. They are covered in a coat of Fine feathers with exception of their forearms and their calves which have exposed Fine Scales. they have a long tapering tail with a tuft of fine hair like many Asian Dragons like Lungs. atop their slender skulls are a pair of Antlers, and from their forehead grows a beautiful Horn like a Unicorn. the Females have Beautiful Manes.
The Anthro version of the Species have Evolved to a primarily Plantigrade species.

Lithotrophic Dragon Species Report
Posted 8 years agoHey folks, just recording this idea for myself. easier to link a journal like this to picarto than try to chop this up.:
Name
Proper Name: Lithotrophic Dragon
Common Name: "Crystal" Dragon
Scientific Name: Dracus Lithotrophus Crystallum
Appearance
The eyes sit thoughtfully within the creature's long, narrow skull, which gives the creature a wise looking appearance.
Two crystal growths sit atop its head, just above its short, curved ears, and a long spiral crystal growth grows from the middle of its forehead. A row of small crystal growths runs down the sides of each of its jaw lines.
Its nose is pointy and has two long, slitted nostrils and there's a small Crystal horn on its nose and on its chin. Two huge Saber teeth poke out from the side of its mouth and reveal only a fraction of the terror hiding inside.
A long neck runs down from its head and into a Slender body. The top is covered in small crystalline scales and a series of crystalline spines runs down its spine. Some individuals will have a Lustrous Mane that conceals these Spines or even Replaces them
Its bottom is covered in crystal-like skin and is colored slightly darker than the rest of its body. Six long limbs carry its body and allow the creature to stand Elegant and proud. Each limb has 6 digits, 4 fingers and 2 opposable thumbs on the foremost limbs, 4 toes and 2 rear toes on the 4 rear legs, each of which end in long talons seemingly made of Crystal.
Massive wings grow starting from its shoulders and end just passed its shoulder blades.
The Female's wings are curved like a pterosaur, yet with a subtle batlike quality, with 3 claws on the wrists, the insides of the wing seem to be made of thin crystals and smooth scales cover the top of each visible bone. (Based on Demona's Wings from Disney's Gargoyles)
The Male's wings are Bat-like with distinct Fingers and a thumbclaw. (Based on Goliath's Wings from Disney's Gargoyles.)
Its long, slender tail ends in a scythe-like blade and is covered in the same small crystal scales as its body.
the Growths are different depending on Location and the local mineral content. With high quality material, the Growths should be Smooth and polished from a proper uninterrupted growth. they should only be jagged if the dragon has been unable to regularly locate quality minerals, causing a series of spiking in the development of the growths.
Females will tend towards Smaller, more delicate looking Growths, sometimes forgoing the chin growth and favoring a sleeker tail blade that grows parallel to the Tail like a Sword Blade. Some Females may develop ANtler-like growths.
Males will tend to grow Thicker growths and sometime even longer nose horns, more vicious tail blades which grow perpendicular to the tail like a Popular depiction of a scythe, and more Bat-like Wings with developed 'fingers' in the structure, with thicker Limbs. their horns are more likely to be chipped and jagged from fighting with other Males over territory or females.
Females can often be a 1/3rd bigger than the Males.
Behaviour
Females are more Sedentary and will rarely leave their chosen Territory save during Breeding Season, where males will fight for the BEST territory with the best mineral deposits.
when breeding, a Female is more likely to pick a male who looks healthy with smooth horns and a radiant pelt, over one who's fought a majority of Rivals and looks rather Ragged, as the Healthier Male will typically have better Resources for the Chicks.
Lithotrophic Dragons will breed about every 50 Years of their millennia long lives, the female typically laying a clutch of 6-10 eggs depending on her and the male's health and resources. the truly healthy eggs are about the size of Beach Balls and have an opalescent shimmer to them, with strong shells impervious to the meddling of smaller creatures. at this stage, the greatest risk to the eggs are other dragons attempting to Oust the parents from their territory.
Parents will fiercely defend their nests from intruders, but should they feel a loosing battle is imminent, the parents will try to save as many eggs as they can by carrying them in their talons.
Baring intruders, in a safe cavern with plenty of minerals, the eggs should hatch in between 6-8 weeks.
Females will stay with the chicks until their 30th year, at which point the chicks will be about a third of their adult size and too big for most predators to bother. the Chicks with then leave the Nest in search of Territories.
Diet
On the topic of Growths and dragons with multi-Mineral Diets caused by a sudden change in diet:
"I'd imagine the growths would continue to grow for as long as the dragon is alive, making preening a viable mating condition for females. Males must be able to groom their mates, as the mates will likely groom them as well. Males would NEED that constant growth, what with constantly fighting over territory and mates. As for a combined mineral dragon, you might see marbling until the growths have grown out enough to fully replace the original mineral with the new one. And the crystalline scales might actually take on an alloy-like appearance."
When asked about the possibility of a Steel Dragon, one source said the following:
"Well, as steel is an alloy of iron and carbon it is actually likely that, if they intake the right amounts even in the wild they could form a steel crystal structure. And I have no issue with helping you with your notes and educated assumptions, it's good fun for a dragon."
Rumors of a Rainbow variant, have been speculated to be either a specimen that Happened to find a territory rich with Various gems. Other say that it's nothing more than a dragon that found a naturally occurring Opal vein. Since an opal is a sedimentary gemstone made up of many smaller gemstone fragments, it's a viable option.
Hygiene
On the subject of Preening and Shedding, one Scientist hypothesized:
"I'd imagine trimmings would be a good starter source of minerals for the young, before they're old enough to gather their own minerals through digging and the like. Mommy sheds loose scales and feeds them to the baby, baby takes on characteristics of mommy and daddy, developing their claws and growths until they are usable to gather their own food source."
Temperament
In terms of Temperament, Females are far more subdued and gentle than the Males, preferring not to fight, even against other females, and will often prefer to use their environment when dealing with intruders, as to not damage their growths, hinting at a sort of vanity. That is until Breeding Season, when females can be just as, if not MORE vicious than the Males, often Gouging the eyes of Intruders to her Nest unless a loss if inevitable, in defense of her Clutch.
Males however have been observed as being rather Brutish in their methods, often locking Nose horns or even Tail blades with rivals until one backs down or slips and is gored by the forehead growth or impaled by the tail blade.when Rutting, a Majority of Males will seek out other Males and battle for Dominance of their territory. However, a Minority of Males, and oddly the more Successful at finding mates, Often forgo these contests in favor of locating Remote Territories with exceptional mineral content, and even cleaning themselves should they already have a stable, uncontested territory.
Habitats
As far as habitats and Territory, these Lithovorous creatures seem to be found worldwide, but rarely near any sapient habitation zones, though the young dragons have been found in played out mines, feasting on the normally inaccessible minerals found deep beneath the surface resulting in some outrageous colors like the Elusive Gold Dragon or even the Platinum Dragon, but such sightings are indeed rare.
Adults seem to prefer Remote areas untouched by mining operations where minerals are plentiful. There have even been unsubstantiated accounts of sightings in Arctic climates, suggesting the creatures are warm-blooded.
Breath Weapons
It has not been confirmed if Lithotrophic Dragons have the ability to breath fire, though Dragonologists hypothesize that if they do, their breath can reach temperatures of magnitudes above what any Human construct can produce, as evidenced by signs of minerals being Smelted, as well as evidence of Diamonds in areas not known for them, suggesting that Lithotrophic Dragons breath Fire on Carbon deposits while exerting tremendous pressure.
SOme studies suggest that the creatures do have a breath weapon, but not fire, which may be useless against their crystalline hides, but rather a stream of sharp icicle like crystals, examples of which have been found near known hunting grounds reaching lengths of over 3 meters, and as thick as a man's arm, which suggest an adaptation to fight other Lithotrophic Dragons for Resources or Territory and penetrate the tough hide.
Some scientist even suggest the capacity for both types of Breath, citing the use for Fire as a method of defense or for melting Minerals out of hard stone, and the Crystal breath as a Hunting Method and for fighting other Dragons.
A minority of Studies suggest that Lithotrophic Dragons lack any breath ability, and instead use their strong Physique to hunt and defend themselves.
Addendum:
Autopsies of deceased Specimens have yielded proof of Lithotrophic Dragons possessing both Crystal AND Fire breaths. Spark pouches filled with minerals that produce sparks when impacted together, along with a bladder-like structure that released methane when opened, suggesting that methane from natural digestive processes is gathered in the highly elastic structure rather than being vented through the anus, then when the creature wishes to used Fire Breath, excess Oxygen from the lungs, and methane from the gas Bladder, are forcefully expelled from the mouth, where it is ignited via the spark pouches, producing the flame often seen in Occidental Dragons.
Addendum:
One Scientist, on the Subject of the Crystal Spears found in hunting grounds and the Possibility of Crystal Breath, hypothesized that The spears could simply be the aftermath of the melted crystal. Collected molten minerals projected from the body at high velocity, cooled in the air to a sharp point, or shattered on impact into said points. Either that, or they actually have a form of rapid-freezing liquid within a specialized organ inside their body which crystallizes on air contact and remains crystallized due to it's melting point being far higher than the ambient air temperature around it. That would also explain why they dislike cold climates, as the drop in their body temperature could literally kill them by having the organ solidify in their body and expand. Kind of like how there are insects that use chemical reactions to produce boiling hot liquids inside their bodies... only reversed.
Intelligence
There is evidence to suspect Lithotrophic Dragons are capable of Primitive tool usage, almost on par with Primitive man, aided by the bi-thumb structure of their forelimbs.
Species in Captivity
many Human ROyal families have been documented as taking in orphaned Lithotrophic Chicks and raising them on a diet of precious stones and GOld, creating the striking Royal variety, often with no two Royal Dragons sharing the same marbling patterns. Royal Dragons are often seen as a Status symbol among the Nobility.
When asked on the subject and if it was inhumane, one expert had this to say:
"I suppose it would depend upon the over all treatment of the dragon. It could be considered Inhumane if it's natural rights are being stepped upon. It is a wild creature and has a right to live a certain way, but if the creature is content, I see no issue with it."
CLosing Statement
Statement from a Valued Source:
"The Lithotrophic dragon is a rare and beautiful creature whom shares it's habitat with many other species of dragons, the world over. They are non-confrontational of other species and can often live in a symbiotic relationship with some of the smaller, more docile dragon species such as the fae or the leaf dragons and in territorial symbiosis with the large breeds of western and eastern dragons including the Oriental and Emperor Lung and the High mountain Wyverns of the Alps. As their territories are used as a nesting grounds and a mine for their minerals to supply their growing needs, having other dragons around to ward off curious passerby and larger predators can be a boon. However too many in one place can lead to deficiency in protein supply, which can result in territorial conflicts between species. I myself have had several Lithotrophic dragons venture into my territory for the rich gold deposits... but they soon realized there were far too many humans about and moved elsewhere... Downside of being viewed as a god by older civilizations."
