Bowser Day
Posted 10 years agoSo... apparently today is Boswer day. What better way to celebrate it by showing you a salty win by me, as Bowser, on the new Smash bros for the WiiU.

I keep forgetting there's a button for shielding and dodging.

Jurassic World trailer
Posted 11 years agoFirst of all, Happy Thanksgiving for those of you who celebrate it!
I´ve been rather quiet due to my job. I´ve done some sketching, but it´s to improve my skills. I´ll try to draw something to post in a near future.
Now, after years of waiting we have a trailer for the latest entry in the Jurassic Park film franchise. The trailer was supposed to preimere today, but it got released online 2 day early... and IT... WAS... AMAZING!
If you haven't seen it, here it is:
I love the idea of a fully functioning Jurassic Park (in this case Jurassic World). So, when things go horribly wrong there's much more to worry about. All those thousands of tourists trapped on an island with a killer dinosaur on the loose. A friend reminded me, that a similar scenario could happen on an expansion to Zoo Tycoon.
Also, The trailer manages to evoke the grendeur of a finally open theme park, which got me very excited. There's another thing, the color palette of the Jurassic World brand tends to be very blue and silver, which to me, is a way of saying: "Yes, we are built upon the research of In-Gen and Mr Hammond's work, but we're better, safer, and more modern".
Many people complained the extensive use of CGI, but the director has confirmed that it has practical effects done by the same team, albeit with a new company name, that made the animatronics and puppets for the JP trilogy, so I'm cool with that. The only thing to worry about now is the story. That's how IU look at movies now. If the effects are ok, but you have a great story, I'm in.
The last shot of Chris Pratt riding a motorcycle with a pack of Velociraptors by his side, is simply PERFECT!. I read some comments that the should be attacking him, but come on... Since we saw Jurassic Park, didn't we all wanted to have a T. rex or a couple of Raptors as pets? Well, maybe it's just me...
This has me pumped for next year's June.
I intend to draw some Jurassic Park realted content soon.

Smash, smash, smash
Posted 11 years agoAfter all this wait, we can finally play Smash Bros on 3ds! I still need to get used to the controls on the handheld.
Just to show some signs of life. Been really busy at work. We are currently working on a couple of scale models for the Mexican Navy. I'll post some photos after they are completed.

New Job
Posted 11 years agoJust wanted to tell you that after a couple of months of doing nothing I finally landed a job. I was hired as a modeller for 3D printing, but for the moment being there are no projects, so I'm on another branch of the company that builds architectural scale models. I've been painting cars, sidewalks, and tiny people. It's so much fun, and better yet, I'm getting paid!
It feels good to finally start finding my way.

At last...
Posted 11 years agoFinally, after 5 years, I graduate from university with a bachelor degree on animation and digital art. This journey has had it's ups and downs, as it should have, but in the end all the all nighters, stress and lots of coffee drinking were well worth it. Now the real challenge begins! But not all was bad stuff. I met my best friends during this period, so I had some people to rely on during the hard times.
On a side note, from April 30 to May 4, I worked as a staff member on CreativaFest, an animation and videogame industry event here in Mexico City. And by being staff, I managed to chat with some of the speakers:
*Ron Husband: Retired Disney Animator with aprox 30 years experience.
*Jeff 'Swampy' Marsh: Co-creator of Phineas and Ferb
*Armand Serrano: Visual development artist
*All the awesome artists from Ka-boom Studio
It was incredible to talk to all these incredibly talented people, and all the tips they gave us. I'll try to start applying them to my art.
I also got the autograph of Dean Cundey on a Jurassic Park tour vehicle card.
A small update on my 777 project. I'm almost done with the exterior model. all the flight surfaces have been modeled and cut. I need to fix a little thing on the wing. The main landing gear well and doors are ready. Next up... Nose gear doors and well, engine and pylon, flaps fairings, and landing gear. After that, I'll proceed to add the antennas, exterior lights sensors and windshield wipers. Then, after some exterior renders, it's interior modelling time...
Hope you have a great summer!

The Last One
Posted 12 years agoFinally, it's that time...
This is my last semester in college. I'll graduate in May with a bachelor in Animation and Digital Art. I'm so excited! This will be the semester to go big or go home!
Here's a little rundown of my final courses:
*Communication regulations: Basically all the legal stuff you need to know, before getting into the entertainment business.
*Computer assisted drawing: Autodesk AutoCAD and Revit.
*Introduction to professional life: Here we'll write our CV's and learn tricks for job interviews
*Physical Interfaces: We'll learn to work with sensors, servos, etc.
Also, I'll be working about 13 hours a week on my demo reel. I'll try to fit in some time to draw, which I haven't been able to do in a long time.
Hope you had a great start for this 2014. Let's make this the best year ever, shall we?

Holidays 2013
Posted 12 years agoFinally it's over. This last leg of the semester was really stressful. Glad it's done. Now come the holidays!!!
Its good to have some free time, but I'm trying to occupy myself with projects. We made a challenge in school with a couple of classmates to model something in 3D during the break. I'm modeling a toy version of the roller coaster train from Disney's Rock n' RollerCoaster.
Also, had some commissions for Christmas cards. One from my father for his parcel service store and another for a small production company.
Recently, a friend came back from Canada, and gave me Animal Crossing: New Leaf, so I might do something AC inspired.
That's all news for now. Have a merry merry Christmas and a Happy New Year 2014!

Off the grid
Posted 12 years agoJust wanted to let you know that I'm still alive. I've been keeping it on the down low lately, due to the incredible amount of school work this semester has given me:
*An animated short
*Two live action shorts
*School projects video
On another note, already finished GTA V's main story. Playing for the 100%, but due to school work, that might have to wait until December

Semester wrap up / Render project
Posted 12 years agoAt last, this semester comes to a close. It had it's ups and downs, but for the most part, it was a good one. No failed courses. Just 2 more semesters 'till graduation.
This summer is going to be filled with projects. Some will be personal, some will be team efforts, so stay tuned...
And to end this quick journal update here's my final project for the Render class. It's a homage to Mexicana, Mexico's oldest airline. It suspended oparations 2 years ago. Took about a day and a half to render it all! Hope you like it!

3D Boeing 777
Posted 12 years agoJust a quick update.
I've been working on the Boeing 777 3D model, and here are some quick updates:
Window Frame
Passenger door
The fuselage is the first thing to be modelled. The thing is going to be made up of several modules, such as: Passenger and cargo doors, windows, landing gear doors, vents, and cockpit windshield, to name a few. The idea is, that when this project is finished, it's going to be a hi-poly model of the Boeing 777-200, with a VIP interior.
Hope you like it, and your feedback is more than welcome.

Halfway there...
Posted 12 years agoWell, it's past the halfway mark of this semester, and things have turned out pretty well. School-wise, that is.
I've been doing some modelling and rendering tests of a Boeing 777 fuselage. Expect to see it soon on my scraps. I might use the interior for a virtual tour assignment for my Rendering class.
Concerning how I started my previous jorunal, yes, I have in fact watched 'Speed', and now I've got cravings for 'Hot Fuzz'.
On a personal note, I've had some ups and downs, but nothing to be concerned about. All is well.
More recently, I played Portal 2. Finally. Man what an amazing game! I got converted into a fan. I don't know why I hadn't played it sooner...
I've been wanting to continue drawing Truman's ref sheet, but there's tons of school work to do. On a side note here, I went to a Home Depot, and somewhat raided the paint section for color samples. Now I've got some nice color combinations I'd like to try out.
And to close this breif journal, last year I was waiting for spring to come to get my hands on GTA V. Then it was announced it was coming out until September 17th. At least we've got the release date, and something to look forward to in the year. But now, I just found out that Daft Punk's new album comes out on May 21st. I couldn't be happier! Daft Punk + Giorgio Moroder = I'm sold!
Hope all is well on your side, and until the next time...

I have the need...
Posted 13 years ago...the need for "Speed". It's been a while since I last saw that movie. A couple weeks back, I took my younger brother, and some friends, to watch the Back to the Future trilogy at a drive-in theater. What an experience!
Starting out a new semester [it actually started 2 weeks ago], tons of exciting things to come this way. The course list is as follows:
*Virtual Environments: Creating virtual reality and augmented reality programs. We plan on creating a simple video mapping exercise and a virtual tour using a CAVE.
*Aplied Geometry: This course is for Industrial Design and Architects. I decided to take it to help me learn the proper ways of perspective. I drew the Pan Am 747 using methods from this class.
*Ethics and Citizenship: Basically, if you have a problem in your community, you'll learn which goverment branch can help you to solve it.
*Lights and materials for Digital Art (In plain english, 3D rendering): Photo-realistic rendering with Mental Ray and V-Ray. I plan on modelling a hi-res Boeing 777, starting with the tail fin and rudder. My teacher will help me with the modelling.
*Ethics, profession, and Citizenship: More Ethics, so the school can stay true to its 2015 mission.
*Advanced thechniques for digital representation (Illustrator and Photoshop). Back to basics. Well in my case, really learn how to use Illustrator.
So that's how my next semestr's going to be. Wish me luck!

Preparing for the end of the world
Posted 13 years agoDon't worry, I'm with all the skeptics who don't believe the world is going to end on the 21st. The thing that has me worried is the Christmas shopping rush. You see, I landed a job at a Game Rush videogame store, at a local shopping mall, on the west side of Mexico City. Since the 14th, people come in hordes (in a Gears of War fashion). Unfortunately, yesterday I had a little disagreement with my boss. I've been on the job for 2 weeks now, and I don't know why, he expects me to have the speed and the skills of a 6-month employee. But then again, if I survive the Christmas season, guess I can take on everything, right?
Artwise, I haven't been able to draw a thing, but since I've been riding the bus a lot, there's a lot of ideas a want to try. Also, I need to finish up a painting I owe
Rasho.
Last week I made my schedule for next semester, and I'll be drawing a lot. I'll be taking Aplied Geometry. I used some techniques from that subject to draw the 747 I have on my gallery, so expect more of that. Also I'll be taking a 3D rendering course and Advanced techinques of digital representaion, which involves Photoshop and illustrator. I hope next semester to be more active, in the artistic sense.
Enjoy your holidays!

Back on track
Posted 13 years agoFinally I get to update this thing! Week four of this new semester and I'm already tired and a little stressed out. On the other hand I'm planing to start working on my perspective drawing, so I'll try to upload drawings more often. There are a lot of things I want to do... Let's how it plays out.
As a side note... Last Saturday I went to a voice-over casting. It was for a beer comercial. Wish me luck!!!

Andrew Loomis
Posted 13 years agoI know I haven't posted anything during the summer, but since I'm 2 weeks away from going back to school, I guess it was a good time to update my journal.
By recomendation of my comic workshop teacher, I searched the works of Andrew Loomis. Through a quick search in the Wiki, I learned that Loomis was an American illustrator, whose work was used primarily in advertising, but he also published a series of instructional books on drawing and illustration. His books are now under public domain. Here's a link to them. All this 6 books are a must have for anyone who loves drawing, want to learn or just get better. Hope you find them useful.
I know some of this books focus on human anatomy, but hey, it's never bad to go back to basics. :)

I'm free!!
Posted 13 years agoWell, sort of... Now that the semester is over, and all courses passed, I can finally concentrate on my drawing skills for the summer.
I just want to let you know that I will do some commisions in a near future, I just need to finish up some pieces I have in the works.
In the meantime, I'll leave you with this little blog I just found http://characterdesignnotes.blogspo.....eys-robin.html It has a really comprehensive collection of material for artists of all skill levels. Do yourself a favor and go check it out!!!

School and art update
Posted 13 years agoI've been undera lot of stress lately, I haven't really found time to realx and draw stuff. School life has really taken a toll on me. This semester has been a rather difficult one:
*4 courses: Data Structure [programming with C++], Creativity and Innovation, Physics I [mainly Mechanics] and Advanced Digital Modelling [Maya and Mudbox]
*Volunteering: Here in Mexico you need to log in at least 480 hours of volunteer work during college as a legal requirement for earing your degree. I go twice a week during the afternoon to a sport facility, built by Colgate-Palmolive back in the 80's, for children of low income families.
*Radio show: I'm also the producer and operator of a radio show focusing on the videogame world news of the week, transmitted through the campus radio station.
*Animation and Digital art student group: I was elected, well mostly pushed, into the position of president of the student group for my career. This casued. I was so stressed out, I left the student group in charge of the vice president. She'll be in charge until she graduates this December, and then I'll take it back.
As for art...I've been working on a freebie I owe Rasho in the little spare time I have. Also, according our Advanced Digital Modelling teacher, we are going to create a humanoid creature for our final assignment. For that I'm sculpting the bust of Truman on plasticine as reference. I'll try to upload pics once it's finished.
Phew... This is one of the longest journals I've written over here...
Fortunately stress levels are going down, so I hope to do more art related stuff in a near future. Meanwhile I'll upload some drawings I've gotten from some of my very good friends form school.
I'll see you when I see you

Posted 14 years agoIt was 'bout time I updated my journal over here. So anyways...
Some might remember the Bowser mask I made for a school project: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5249796/. Well, this year it's going to be put up for some real use. We're having an extra curricular workshop on characterization. Last Monday I went to the teacher for help to create the mask. He's going to help me transform the plaster cast into a special effects-like make up to apply directly on my face. Also, I just got a hold on some foam to sculpt the shell and tail. Expect updates on this project during the month.

Summer
Posted 14 years agoAfter finals I forgot to uptade the journal, so here it goes...
Summer goals:
*Finish my model cockpit
*Color up the 777 cockpit sketch
*Do 2 or 3 comissions
*Find a summer job
Note: Not necessarily in that order.
I've been suffering from art block lately, but I hope it will go away soon. In the meantime I'll just go along with my L.A. Noire and Pan Am obsession.
