A Little Bit Of Humor
Posted 14 years agoSuicides
Posted 15 years agoAnybody that has logged onto the Portal recently has seen the large article on Suicides, noting the increase in percentages over the past year, etc. We've all had to sit through briefings, slide-shows and sometimes even real-life stories about the issue.
I want to take this opportunity to point out that this is a very real, very serious issue that we all need to be aware of and mindful of. An not just at work, either. But on the home-front.
During my 12 months in Korea there were 3 "successful" suicides and numerous other attempts.
And now, at my current assignment, within my own unit, a spouse of a deployed member took their own life.
This isn't a joke. It isn't something that never happens, you only hear about in movies, etc. It's real life. And it's happening more and more.
So pay attention. Be mindful of those around you. Watch for the signs and keep in contact with dependents.

DADT Repealed...
Posted 15 years agoDo you realize what this means?! We shall be forced to sit through endless policy briefings that will bring the occurrences of Death By Power Point to levels never before achieved...even worse than Base Defense and Information Protection CBTs...
I hope you all are happy.

Pay Freeze
Posted 15 years agoWord on the street is that our Commander n Chief, one Barack Obama, is working to impose a freeze on military salaries for a period of 36 months.
Ok. Understandable. The budget in this country is out of hand and spending is way higher than it should be. Seeing as how taxes pay our wages, it would seem like a reasonable place to make cuts.
However. It is my humble opinion that if you want to start freezing or even slashing pay, why doesn't the Government start in its own pocket? I'm sure Congress, the Senate, and even El Presidente himself are very financially secure given the amount in which they are paid annually. Would it not make more sense, at least as a symbolic gesture in good faith, to curtail their own annual pay?
Not to make the "its only about the money" debate, but considering we're the ones making the trips to the Sandbox and catching mortars with our assholes, while they make chartered flights to the Hamptons and play Golf in Augusta...but I would think they need their six figure incomes far less than we need our less than $30,000 a year.
Thoughts? Anyone got an opinion on if this measure will or will not pass given the recent party shift within the government? Anyone feel that even if they do, it's not a problem..since our annual raise is only around 3% anyway?

Updates
Posted 15 years agoSorry for the sporadic updates despite my talk of keeping it more active.
Not to be making excuses. But your humble moderator is at the tail end of a 365 Remote and the PCS hammer is coming down hard on me. Content and updates will be occurring on a more consistent basis once I reach my next duty location.
With that in mind, if anyone has content and/or suggestions of things we can spread around here, by all means drop a note and I'll post it up if its relevant/within reason.

thedresdenbomberUniform Policies
Posted 15 years agoAnyone else think its completely convoluted? Between the new ABUs, the regs on the green fleece, the fleece cap over the knit cap, the PTU combinations, the color of your socks based on the uniform you have on, the green sweater over the brown sweater, 17 different Blues combos...
It's pretty bad when the Shirt has to send out emails and brief the squadron on proper wear of a fucking beanie every time the winds change direction...
Thoughts?

EPRs
Posted 15 years agoDo you think the system is flawed?
Are 5s given out faster than condoms by public health at AETC bases?
Has the 5 become the standard rather than the exception thus leading to rampant promotion rates?
My opinion is that it is in fact flawed. Even as someone with 3 consecutive 5Bs, I think it needs to be retooled and rethought. Perhaps set a higher standard since so many seem to be meeting the current "excellent" rating, obviously we need to raise the bar. a 48% staff percentage? That's nuts...and looking at the scores of those that have and haven't made it, the deciding factor in most cases seems to be the EPR scores.

First Topic of Discussion: New PT System
Posted 15 years agoNew PT Program.
Thoughts on it? Experiences with it? Do you actually know anyone who has lost their job/stripes over a PT failure (either under the old system or the new)?
Is the new system fair? Do you think failing one aspect of the test should automatically fail you the rest of way regardless?
How do you feel about civilians giving out the tests or the impact it has on your EPR?
What about the incentives for high performers (IE: 90 and above, you only test once a year)?
Compared to the old system, do you prefer the new system or did they simply polish a piece of shit and call it something better?
If YOU had to make a suggestion about changes to the PT program, what would they be?
Working to establish a decent dialogue and given that the PT system has been a big topic of contention lately, we'd like to get perspective from around the Force.
Thanks.

New Management
Posted 15 years agoDue to recent events,
maverickcowboy has stepped down as the admin/maintainer of this here group and has asked that I
thedresdenbomber take his place.
So. That being said, allow me to introduce myself for those of you that have no clue who I am.
I go by Dresden (most call me Dres for short). I'm active duty Air Force currently stationed at Kunsan Air Base, South Korea on the back end of my 1 Year Remote with a follow on to Moody Air Force Base, Georgia.
Noticeably this group has been kind of dead. Being that I am active duty AF and have my finger on the pulse of the Force these days, expect more content, journals, photos, stories, etc. Comments are not expected but are welcome and I'll try to refrain from content that impacts or is only related to myself (that's what MY FA page is for).
Keeping with the "not all about me" mindset, if you guys/gals have anything you'd like to see thrown up here for the group, feel free to hit me up through notes on this or my personal account. I'll work to make this as member-active as possible.
If there are any comments, questions, concerns, suggestions, or general statements, feel free to comment here.
