A hello, an apology, and an attempt to make amends.
Posted 6 years agoHello, I’m Fur Affinity user alexgrey.
You’re probably reading this because you followed this account during the period that it was active from 2010 to 2012. I don’t know why, exactly; maybe you liked my attempts at art, maybe you enjoyed my writing, and maybe we were just friends.
And on the 11th of July 2012, I callously destroyed that relationship.
I cannot say I regret the act of leaving the furry fandom—I feel my reasons were justified given my experiences and position in life at the time—but I do regret, quite badly, how readily I disengaged from those I knew. How I failed to maintain connections.
Two and a half years ago I reevaluated my time in the fandom and how it had compared to other fandoms I’m heavily involved in, and determined that my disenfranchisement with the furry fandom was, in many ways, the result of my own actions. I involved myself once again with the local furry community, made a new fursona, made some new connections and re-established some old ones.
But that doesn’t erase the guilt I feel at dropping those connections in the past.
So here is my attempt at redemption: I’m sorry. I failed to keep in touch, I failed to value what we had, and I failed—in that time—to be a good person and a good friend. In a way the journal header that has sat here, unchanged for nearly seven years, is more relevant than ever.
I don’t expect forgiveness and I don’t expect things to return to how they were. They can’t. The world has changed, you’ll have changed, and I most definitely have changed. But to everyone I once knew, consider this an olive branch: I want to make amends, and if you want to too, I’m waiting. A tweet, comment or message is all it takes.
Thank you for listening,
~ Kimberly Grey
P.S. Other than this journal I intend to keep this account untouched. If you want to see my more recent attempts at creativity, I can be found over at collargogglebirdhorse.

My Way
Posted 13 years agoAnd now, the end is near,
And so I face the final sign off,
My friends, I'll keep it short,
This fandom, I'm going to layoff,
I've been here for six years,
Some would say that's quite well done,
But yes, just to recap, goodbye fur fandom.
They say that the best way to leave a fandom properly is in silence.
Much like I hope to do with my life, I go out singing, dancing and surrounded by friends.
WHY?
It probably became clear with my hiatus a few weeks back - and the conclusions eventually drawn from it - that I am personally unhappy with the current state of the furry fandom, for reasons I do not wish to elaborate on here (for fear of sparking all manner of drama). While I have made some attempts to reorient my approach and way of thinking, it honestly doesn't seem to be worth the time, I'm just trying to prolong my presence somewhere I don't want to be. Stockholm Syndrome, I called it previously. So I'm going cold turkey.
No more alexgrey.
No more @blubberbat
No more alexandergrey[at]aggag.biz on MSN
BUT I'M YOUR FRIEND! :(
Allow me to clarify some things however, this is not about the people, mostly not about people anyway. If you're my friend in the fandom then you're still my friend, I'm just not in the fandom anymore. If your friendship with me was dependent on us both being furries, it wasn't a very good friendship - was it?
You're all totally free to add other Twitter accounts and other messengers, lots of my other accounts elsewhere will remain active pretty much indefinitely.
CONCLUSION
I'm going to be around today. After that everything goes quiet.
Make your peace.

Hey baby, I'm back again.
Posted 13 years agoWould you believe, mere days after returning from my fuzzball hiatus I end up moving house to somewhere that is distinctly lacking an internet connection.
In that time I've been snatching at bits of Twitter while at work - I have a job now, I'm a junior developer, it's fun - but dared not wander into the murky depths of FA.
But now I do have an internet connection, which is how I'm writing this.
Please excuse me while I favourite half a bajillion things that have been uploaded in the past week.

Five and a half days away. I return.
Number three for now.
Cryptic messages.
Fragmented sentences.
Questions. Answers. Fetishes.
Enlightened but disappointed.
Stockholm syndrome.
This home, so strange.
But hey, when in Rome.
I find reality is a beautiful thing.
A beautiful, incredibly boring thing.
Say hello, world.

This is the thinking I am employing now when I say that I'm going to take a break from the furry fandom for a while. This might come as a bit sudden to you all (especially with the call for characters I did only yesterday), but it's something I've been considering for well over a week, culminating in my night of quiet, introspective mood.
Allow me to clarify that this is not a "I'm leaving the fandom forever" or a call for attention. I'm well aware that the escape velocity needed to leave the atmosphere of the furry fandom is greater than that needed to leave the Hotel California, nor is this journal coming from any desire for attention or reinforcement - I just want to inform folks that I'm not going to be around for a while.
I'm not going to be on FA, @blubberbat or on WLM/MSN or AIM for an indeterminate amount of time. I may return in days, I may return in months. Who knows.
If you're desperate to continue talking to me in the intervening time, I can still be found @verygrey, @bronygrey (where most of my usually fuzzy tweets will probably be going), on Tumblr, Facebook and even Google+.
See you around, fuzzies.

Need people to fill out some story roles
Posted 13 years agoI'm just starting work on my newest *cough* "masterpiece", and I would like people to donate their characters to the cause.
Just drop a comment here and I'll possibly include you - either in a major, named role or an unnamed cameo. You don't get a choice which, as I'll be allocating roles based on suitability.
Suitability is a pretty big part of how I decide who can do what, and if you don't fit the ethos of my in-story universe then you'll probably not be included at all (no rampant magic users, no intercontinental blobs of fat, etc.) There could also quite simply not be enough room for everyone, keep that in mind.
So go for it, yo.

Brony charity album, raising money for third world children
Posted 13 years agoI actually heard about the Massive Smile Project quite a while ago, but it wasn't until today - a few meagre minutes ago - that I actually listened to it.
I'll be up front here and come right out - I love big charity singles - no matter how corny they can end up being, I just love seeing a collaboration of totally different musicians come together, donating time and effort to a charitable cause. It is then no surprise that I freaking love this. Good god there must be over a hundred brony musicians on this single four minutes of music. Aaaaaaa it's so awesome.
Anyway, the point of all this is to raise money for two different third world countries, building a health clinic in Uganda (a project that was already half-funded by donations before the above single even came out), and safe homes for orphaned children in Burundi. The former was fully funded in the first few days, the latter is currently around $5,000 away from being fully funded too.
And that's why there's a journal here, right now, you're reading it. After raising over $24,000 already it would be a shame for them to fall short, so I'm spreading the news around a bit! After all, I hadn't even heard this song until today, I bet a bunch of you haven't either.
You even get stuff out of it, such as this exclusive 41 track album of original music by a variety of delightful brony folk.
So go read up and donate. Go. Do it. Donate now. Don't worry. I can wait while you go and give money to sick, homeless, orphaned children. Donate enough and you can even win games, original artwork, custom made toys, clothing and accessories.
Have you donated yet? I should hope so!
Bronies for Good are already a well established charitable organisation, having already raised over $25,000 for children diagnosed with cancer and frequently collaborating with other charitable pony groups such as the Traveling Pony Museum (a travelling museum that gives free toys to hospitalised children) and the Humble Brony Bundle (raising money to fight famine in Africa). It's legit stuff.
So go. Donate. Do it. Do it now.
[Project] Collateral Damage Man
Posted 13 years agoFolks who know me will know that I make random websites from time to time.
This time was a little different, instead of making a website we made a film instead! Well, a trailer, a film is a little much for a group of people of whom none have any experience with making videos.
But without further ado, I present Collateral Damage Man, the hottest epic new superhero action film on the block.

And if you're new to this, our previous projects: Das Kömputerbähn (for your computing and music needs!), St Jesus' University (the holiest place to learn!), uKar.biz (good kar from good Nigerian gentlemen!) and Durian (stink different).

Posted 13 years ago[Pony] So I made it on Equestria Daily...
Posted 13 years agoSUNDAY
Student union elections are next week. For a few weeks I've been pondering infiltrating them with random ponies because why the heck not? In 20 minutes I throw together simple election posters for the mane six - nothing too amazing - I only have so much ink in my printer. My housemates think they're funny.
I post them up on Reddit. After a slow first couple of hours it starts getting popular.
I also post it on UK of Equestria, a British brony site I joined earlier in the day. It gains a moderately popular response.
MONDAY
The Reddit post becomes the most popular thing I've contributed to the site, gaining 550 upvotes and 150,000 views. It's the second most popular My Little Pony related submission on that day.
I plan to post the flyers around university, but neglect to bring something to stick them up with (derp). I buy blu-tac on the way home.
That evening someone submits it to MLP fansite Equestria Daily, prompting discussions about which pony would make the best president, as well as other cabinet positions. EqD create a week long poll so people can vote on who would make the best president.
TUESDAY
I wake up to find a message on the UK of Equestria thread alerting me to the posters being featured on Equestria Daily. I take a look and laugh quite loudly in giddiness while still in bed. The post has well over 250 comments and a full five-star rating.
Tonight, nary two hours ago, I sneak around the mostly quiet campus and start posting ponies across the walls. I have to be swift and sneaky, making sure I'm not seen posting them up as I try and avoid the few straggling students and cleaning staff. I finish after half an hour, neglecting to poster two large blocks due to not printing enough flyers.
WEDNESDAY
The fun begins.

A few ramblings about life
Posted 13 years agoWell hey, it's been a while since a journal that wasn't a watcher welcome, hasn't it? Tis journal is perhaps more serious, within I'll be talking about creative works, religious beliefs and my attitude to the furry fandom. If you just followed me for the art or inane trivia, this journal is not for you.
---
First up, creative works. You probably noticed that I haven't uploaded anything to my gallery since The Genesis of the Slorg story, while slow upload times aren't rare around these parts, the reason is a bit more purposeful than just lack of motivation.
Following the release of Slorg, I decided to try and pursue writing as my primary form of expression within the furry fandom. After all I'm a much more proficient writer than I am illustrator. As is evident - this hasn't come to pass. I have about as much motivation to write as I used to have to draw, which is to say very little. We'll touch on this again in a moment.
---
Now for a topic I don't often talk about: religion. For quite a few years now I have fairly consistently listed my religious practices as either agnostic (as in nobody can prove or disprove a higher power, not "I don't care") or more frequently Buddhist.
A little secret for you: I never really knew much about Buddhism. I knew the parts that most people know of - karma, doing no harm to living things, maintaining a peaceful state of mind, the planes of existence, etc. - and I did practice these, and still do!
Recently however I read more in depth about Buddhist practices, the full Four Noble Truths and the Eight-Fold Path, and it's become pretty safe to say I've been living the full on Buddhist lifestyle for quite a few years. Don't indulge in anger, do not partake in idle gossip, do not make business through the exploitation of others, don't drink alcohol or partake in recreational drug usage, don't pass judgment on anyone for any reason? Dude, you're practically describing the last several years of my life here.
To conclude, I'm a Buddhist now. Please respect my practices as I do yours.
---
And now my attitude to the furry fandom. This is probably ending the journal on a bad note, but I figured it fit best at the conclusion.
For the last many, many months I have felt fairly disconnected from the furry fandom. I am no longer a frequent content producer and are no longer frequent at furry meets or events. The number of people I'm in regular communication with has dwindled to a quite literal handful, and I get the impression through blockades and lack of responsiveness that others are trying to avoid me. I've been removed from the Christmas card list, so to speak.
I'm not blaming them for anything, I cannot claim to know their motives or situation. I am aware this is my personal perception and won't pass judgement of the individuals based upon it.
This disconnect is not just based on social communication with others but the fandom at large. As per my Furries vs. Bronies style journal from December, there are quite a few features of the furry fandom I find distasteful, and my perception of the fandom as awhile has shifted to a significantly negative slant. If I were still producing Furry Guru videos as I was several years ago, I would struggle to justify the fandom as a positive force. It has, in my eyes, lost the innocence it once had and this troubles me greatly.
I do not have any plans to depart the fandom, neither permanently or temporarily. I'm quite aware of the futility of doing so. But don't expect much of me around either.

Grey Rants: Furries who dislike bronies, comparing fandoms
Posted 14 years agoFun fact: I have a lot of long, drawn-out complaints in my head. I've just never written them down out of respect for people with opposing views.
But hell, I thought I'd write this one.
Dear furries who dislike fans of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic:
What the hell is wrong with you?!
You, as a person who spends some amount of your life in a fandom that is based around anthropomorphic cartoon animals, are hating on people who spend some amount of their lives in a fandom based around anthropomorphic cartoon animals.
You can see how there are a lot of furries that are also bronies. You know, because they're exactly the same.
As a person who has spent some significant amount of time engaging in both the furry and pony fandoms, I can tell you that they are immensely similar. Yes there are differences, but that is bound to happen - as much as the two have in common, there are some inherent differences.
THINGS THAT ARE VERY DIFFERENT
#1: The very focus
The furry fandom is strange. Strange in a way you've probably never noticed. It's not really a fandom. Fandoms tend to be focused around one specific group of media; trekkies are the Star Trek fandom, whovians are the Doctor Who fandom, bronies are the MLP fandom, etcetera.
But what are furries a fan of? Well, anthropomorphic animals in general! But that means we have a much wider scope, covering all manner of media and topics. That's great! It allows us to prosper by not being tied into a TV show or book that could come to an end or be lost to the ages (you don't hear from the Time Squad fandom much nowadays!) but it also means we lack focus - and it is this that is the primary focus of other differences between the two.
#2: Original characters
It's hard to be in the furry fandom without a fursona; it is a de facto standard to have an original character to use for roleplay and artistic pursuits. In the MLP fandom this is much less common; the media has been provided, there are other characters to write about and draw, an established canon to work with and theories to pursue - there is much less need to create an original character, unless one wishes to insert themselves into the established canon, ala fanfiction style.
#3: Porn
Well of course there's pornography of ponies, rule 34 and all that, but in the MLP fandom it's just not so obvious. It is after all a children's cartoon, and many people actively object to sexualising characters and situations - something I experienced first-hand when I jokingly made a mature joke on the r/mylittlepony subreddit.
#4: Fucking drama
"Love and tolerate" is the brony creed, and by-and-large this seems to have been completely accurate. Drama in the brony fandom is, if anything, completely nonexistent - except for the drama in fanfiction anyway. Bronies love dramatic fanfics (I'm currently reading one where Pinkie Pie dies of diabetes, it's so heart-wrenching!)
The fact I'm even writing this journal shows the same hasn't happened in the furry fandom.
THINGS THAT ARE EXACTLY THE SAME
#1: Creepers
There is a video floating around somewhere on the Internet of a brony meet where people were loud, rude and generally obnoxious in a public place. Sound familiar? Well of course it should, that's what happens at most furmeets.
Mention that video in an MLP chatroom and you'll be met with several exasperated sighs and groans at having to remember it. It is an embarrassing thing to be associated with, as it should be.
#2: Creativity
Furries are a creative bunch. And guess what? Bronies are too! Who'da thunk it?
#3: Costumes
There are MLP cosplayers who attend comic, anime and even furry conventions. The ponies are arguably better looking.
#4: Conventions
Just as there are furmeets, there are brony meets. Just as their are furry conventions, there are brony conventions. They differ in practically no way whatsoever.
#5: Communities
You thought furries, with their own bespoke galleries and social networks were bad? There are brony news sites and Twitter clones.
There is however a shade of difference here. MLP-centric art sites seem rare, if non-existent. I theorize that the subject is mainstream enough to just take place on sites like deviantART - where there are many, many, many pony groups - helped along by the lack of focus on pornographic media (which you furry historians would know was why Fur Affinity was created in the first place.)
#6: Charity
In 2010, 22 furry conventions from around the world collected a recorded $126,499 for charity, primarily from art auctions, but also from charities officially affiliated with the convention and all-out fundraisers (notably Mephit Furmeet, which raised money for Hurricane Katrina victims in 2005).
I know a lot of you people are gamers, and you've probably heard of the Humble Indie Bundle - a collection of games from independent studios, with some proceeds from sale going to charity. If you ever looked at the sales stats on their website you'd have seen that the Humble Brony Bundle - a charitable pot of bronies - are far and away the biggest donators for every single bundle.
Also the charitable organisation Bronies For Good. And, of course, making everyone's lives better.
#7: And, err, demographics
Practically every survey and study of the furry fandom made in the last decade has found a ratio of 4:1 males and females. This is the same in the brony fandom.
An average age from the early-teens to the mid-20s? Eeeyup, that's the same too. (In fact, bronies trend further towards the older end of the spectrum than furries do.)
By-and-large, the two fandoms are demographically the same, not surprising as they're about the same talking cartoon animals.
IN CONCLUSION
I am personally very proud of the My Little Pony fandom. In the space of just over a year it has grown into a fandom of comparable merit to the furry fandom, whilst at the same time shedding undesirable aspects (porn, drama) and promoting positive ones (tolerance). The My Little Pony fandom has proved itself much more mature, and thus much more accessible to the public at large as a result.
Personally, I actually find bronies a much more pleasant crowd to associate with.
But hell, I thought I'd write this one.

True or false? These are the answers.
Posted 14 years agoI didn't want to drag this out over days or anything and I've been itching to be truthliness up in here, so 20 hours is enough for most people, no?
Below are 10 statements. Seven of them are true to the word, three are lies designed to deceive. Now you can find the truth in the mystery.
1. I am extremely religious. FALSE
Congratulations to... everyone.
I guess this was an obvious one, I'm not a devout follower of any organised religious practice. Currently I align myself closest to Buddhism in my beliefs, I meditate moderately often and really hope that doing good deeds will garner similar returns (ie, karma), but such things as reincarnation I'm much more iffy on.
As it happens when I was much younger (around 11 or so) I actually was an extremely religious person, except this time in Roman Catholicism (the religion I was indoctrinated into at birth). While I lost that faith pretty early on in my teens, at least it got me a golden ticket into the good schools.
2. I once built and programmed a robot to navigate a simple obstacle course in the space of two hours. TRUE
Tough luck Minh, this one is true!
When I was about 14 I was chosen to represent my school at a local fair to encourage more kids to partake in science and mathematics. One of the projects available was to construct a robot from a set of parts, without instructions and - should you complete this successfully - program it to navigate a simple obstacle course using a control unit (you could program it then tell it to run, but could not change the course after it started).
I completed my robot in 40 minutes and, with some measurements, had it successfully navigate the course on the second attempt.
3. I once wrote a poem so astoundingly good that it made someone cry manly tears. TRUE
Tolstoy, Hiro, Truck, Zane, Noragon and Jace. Tut tut tut!
Coming up to the final weeks of primary school, the final year group were preparing a talent show of sorts to act as a leaving assembly. Everyone was supposed to take part, and while many opted for your typical talent show fayre (singing and dancing) I decided to write and read a poem about the history of the school. The headmistress at the time (a Mrs L V Pollard) started crying while I read the poem and later had it framed and hung on the wall of her office. Then she surprised me later by giving me a pack of glittery gel pens in middle of a class.
I no longer have the poem (the copy I read from was the one put on display), but I can still recall the first line: I open my book of memories.
4. I have a very awkward interest in the mechanics of terrorist attacks, natural and man-made disasters. TRUE
No one doubted this one. Is my psychopathic side that obvious?
5. I have a book dedicated to me. TRUE
Minh and Tolstoy, you were absolutely wrong!
The book Northern Heritage - Medieval is dedicated to both me and my brother, having been written by a family friend going back a couple of decades. She never got married or has any surviving family, so we adopted her into our own and call her Granny Margaret.
Okay, so it's not exactly a bestseller or anything, but it's still a bona-fide published book!
6. I've nearly fell off the edge of a waterfall once, by accident of course. TRUE
Ain't no doubt in your minds!
Some 12 years ago while holidaying in Malaysia, the family decided to go swimming at a local spot - a moderately calm pool located between two waterfalls. While swimming there, water got into my eyes and I was blinded. Whilst flailing about uselessly and trying to rub my pained eyes I was caught in a current and pulled towards the edge of the waterfall. I survived mainly because there was a large rock in the way and my grandfather swam in and picked me up from there.
I almost fell off a cliff once, too.
7. At the time of my first high school's closure, I was statistically the smartest student there (measured by average exam results). TRUE
Oh Gullible of little faith. You have failed me.
I left my first high school (St Theodore's Catholic High) at the end of year 9. The school was closing at the same time and merging with the sister school (St Hilda's) to become a new school (Blessed Trinity College). Because the school building had long due to be demolished, they were steadily moving students year-by-year to the St Hilda's site, and by the end of that year only years 7, 8 and 9 were still present at St Theodore's.
Now our head of year (Mr Ennis, who I remember primarily for taking us on spontaneous, illegal field-trips) was a PE teacher and liked a little competition, so at the end of each term he compiled all of our test results and found who had achieved the best results. At the end of year 9, it was I. Huzzah!
Of course, for full disclosure, this was the only ever time I came first in one of these. I usually came second (after my best friend Danny), and the school wasn't very highly achieving anyway, so being the best there was roughly equal to being average anywhere else - I really struggled at my second high school, the psychiatrist I went to after my mental breakdown could tell you that.
8. I have been arrested for refusing to cooperate with a police kettle. FALSE
Congrats to Hiro, Truck, Zane, Nogaron, Gullible and Jace. This one is false.
I've only been threatened with arrest for refusing to cooperate with a police kettle. That time I just had two coppers grab me and push me into it. (They broke my backpack strap in the process :c)
9. I have a large collection of novelty shirts. FALSE
Haha! I got you on this one! It sounds too true for it to be a lie, and that's precisely what I was going for! Getting all psychology up in here!
The only shirts I have that are close to being "novelty" are one with a rock, paper and scissors wrestling, and one with Rainbow Dash's cutie mark - which I'm wearing right now.
The keyword there was "large".
10. I first drove a car when I was 13. TRUE
Nobody fell for it, despite me being criminally incompetent at the wheel of anything. D'oh!
I first drove a car... in August 2005... on a deserted road... near an army base... in Canada. It was a Chrysler 300 (commence "ooo"s from the car crowd), and totally automatic, so driving it wasn't actually that hard. I think I hit a top speed of maybe 20 mph.
And now you know, because knowing is half the battle.

Posted 14 years agoSimilar to other meme-type things I have seen around, but instead of following the rules strictly I've just kind of rolled it my own way. In other words it's exactly the same as all the other ones anyway.
