Welcome to the General Election 2010
General | Posted 15 years agoNow as partisan as I may be, being a member of the Liberal Democratic party, I will not say any particularly opinionated things for... the first few paragraphs, at least. All I ask is that you people who are eligible to vote should go out today and use that power.
Just 150 or so years ago, only the landed gentry were allowed to vote in this country, nowadays that would be like only letting millionaires have a say in how the country is run. Over the last century and a half, uncountable people have put themselves on the line, protested and even died for your right to put a cross in one little box.
Conversely, you have the right to disagree with all the parties, if you are disgruntled with politics to the very core then you can rebel - but this is not done by staying at home, in a democracy you rebel by spoiling your ballot; cross all the boxes, draw a picture, write obscenities - this way, your non-vote is still counted, still processed like any other, but says something very different: "I vote for nobody."
This, my friends, is the only say you have in how this nation is run for the next five years. If you refuse to use your vote now then you lose any right to complain in the future. If you disagree with anything Labour, the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats or any other party does - you are not to utter a word about it. You had the opportunity to stop it, you had the opportunity to rebel, and you refused it. So shut up.
As I stated before, I'm a member of the Liberal Democrats - for those unaware, the Lib Dems are a centre-left political party, currently the third largest in the country, who abide by the ideals of modern liberalism, where the state takes a generally non-interventionist role in social and economic policy however still provides state-run services such as healthcare, schools and benefits to provide a minimum standard of living for all.
I don't think I've ever gone into detail about exactly why I'm a Liberal Democrat, so now is as good a time as any.
The Liberals are just that, liberal - and for those who don't know some basic English, liberal comes from "liberty", which means "freedom". The Lib Dems are the party of the free, their policies are based entirely around stopping intervention into the life of the common man: providing equal opportunities for people of all backgrounds, creeds and races; securing human rights; and letting the economy operate freely (within certain boundaries).
As the child of an immigrant, having lived a significant portion of my life barely above the poverty line, living with a single and being a homosexual; to oppose support for suffering families and immigrants, and opposing equal rights for ... myself, then I would have to be one hell of a hypocritical bastard.
In addition to this, the Lib Dems are much more pacifist and environmentally-aware than other parties; they were the only major party to oppose the war in Iraq, branding it as overly expensive and doomed to failure (to which Charles Kennedy had a very merry "I told you so" moment a few months ago), they're the only major party opposing the renewal of the several hundred billion pound Trident nuclear defence network (which we've never used... ever), and the only major party to propose strict regulations on industry and power plants based on their carbon output.
While I may not be much of a "greenie" myself, I do think the environment matters a significant amount, and would not support a party that did not take the issues of climate change and pollution seriously. However, while I'm not very environmental, I am very pacifist, and have been since before my memory allows. I recall a time some six or seven years ago, at the grand age of 12 when I called myself a conscientious objector for the first time; since then I have consistently refused to have any involvement with the military of any nation, be it school trips to even supporting them - the war in the Middle East is pointless, stupid and deadly, doing nothing but serving the interests of investors.
And, of course, I'm a student. Students have for a long time been the core support of the Liberal Democrats and the party has gladly reciprocated. The Lib Dems probably have the most extensive and comprehensive policies for subjects that affect students and young people, including lowering the voting age, providing better support for young parents and people only just finding their way into the housing market, more money into education, reforming examination practices and - most famously of all - abolishing tuition fees.
Tuition fees have been the bane of students for the last 13 years, leading to record amounts of debt amongst young people and setting them off on a road where they can spend decades paying back what they needed - just to get an education. This to my eyes - and the eyes of every modern liberal out there - is WRONG. All people should have an equal opportunity to succeed and progress through education and imposing a fee to learn is only going to discriminate against the poorest and most disadvantaged people within society.
But then comes electoral reform. Electoral reform is the dealmaker in the event of a hung parliament today - Nick Clegg will only form a coalition government with the Conservatives or Labour on the basis that we change the system we use for voting and change it quickly.
In Britain we currently use the First Past the Post (FPTP) system to elect our public representatives and, while simple, this system not only discriminates (even if Labour come third in the popular vote today, they can still win the most seats in the House of Commons due to being the incumbent party), but wastes votes. While I cannot provide any definitive statistics, under the current electoral system roughly 50-70% of votes will be thrown away. All of that counting, all of that anticipation and effort - only for most of the work to be chucked in the bin?
First Past the Post is fundamentally unfair and is pretty much the whole reason we have a culture of "my vote means nothing" in this country. That is why the Liberal Democrats want to reform our elections to use the Single Transferable Vote (STV), a system that provides much greater proportionality and makes your vote (or rather, two votes under STV) worth something greater than what it is now.
STV is a complex electoral system - much more complicated than FPTP - however provides you with a number of MPs to represent you in parliament and would bring an end to a party running a country, when only 40% of people voted for them to do so in the first place - something that has gone on far too long in the UK. See more about STV on Wikipedia.
General elections are now the only elections in the country to still use FPTP - European elections, regional assemblies and and local government elections all use STV to great effect. FPTP has been phased out in dozens of countries around the world and is now a relic that should be consigned to the history books.
I've just spent an hour and a half writing this journal, I should sleep. Goodnight!

Confessions (on alcohol, fat, sexuality, being boring)
General | Posted 15 years agoI have a lot to get off my chest you know, and tonight seems a fine time to do it, what with having so little to do.
Alcohol consumption
A lot of you (people who attended Birthdaycon or Hirocon... or both) will know that I'm pretty much tee-total on drinking alcohol. I will not drink it, no matter how you wish to bribe or blackmail me. Frankly, having it constantly forced upon me is quite aggravating and at times I've had to restrain myself from slapping you people around when you're shoving cider or whatnot in my face.
I do not drink alcohol for a number of reasons, including but not limited to:
* Lack of tolerance: Eastern Asians genetically have very little tolerance to alcoholic beverages - thus why there's such a stereotype as the drunken Japanese businessman - it doesn't take a lot to get plastered.
* More lack of tolerance: I can only think of two people in my entire extended family who I know drinks alcohol - out of parents, grandparents and some several dozen aunts, uncles and cousins - only two drink alcohol, and not even on a regular basis.
* It does horrible things: I have friends who drink, some excessively. I need not go any further than them stumbling around shouting "I'M NOT DRUNK!" at people, which annoys me extremely.
* I'm mentally insane: I only have a tedious hold on my sanity at the best of times, destroy my inhibitions and I'll probably kill/assault someone or have a mental breakdown. Easily.
Sexuality
For quite a while I've identified myself as gay, before that I said bisexual. In reality, I identify myself as asexual. While it is true that I find men more physically attractive than women, I have never at any point in my life ever desired to have sexual relations with neither man nor woman.
Despite being a bit of a chubby chaser, a person's weight does not play any part in deciding how much I am attracted to them - I base attractiveness solely on personality.
The idea of sexual relations doesn't interest or arouse me at all. That's pretty much the end of that.
Weight gain
This one is the reason why I posted this journal here and not elsewhere - as all my other blogs are watched by people I know in real life, and who are unaware of this little facet of my person.
While it seems I have long been an advocate of gaining weight - for both myself and for others - and a reasonable weight is something I do find attractive, however I have never been sure of gaining weight myself.
Like my rejection of drinking alcohol, the base of thought behind this is spread across many points:
* Health issues: This is not just my complete and utter lack of exercise, but hereditary illness also. My mother's side of the family has a history of heart disease and depression, my father's side in skin conditions and degenerative mental illness. This is not a good base to work off. At age 18, I already have a cholesterol level significantly higher than the recommended and have respiratory and skin issues that will probably cause issues for the rest of my days.
* I'm two-faced: I often support people to grow as big as they can and want to, no matter what fantastical limit they have. In truth, I only find people up to about 240 pounds in any way attractive, over that and I start finding it a little off-putting.
* I'm a reluctant gainer: I am slowly and steadily gaining weight, although I constantly wonder whether I should. Unlike some people, I do not take an active role in trying to put on weight, I just eat when I'm hungry and let that be that. I've never really dedicated any time to actually trying, except for the occasional Wednesday banquet.
Not to say I don't find fatness attractive - I do - but there are limits to it, and I often think that I should probably lose a lot of weight, if only to save myself, which I guess would no longer make me a gainer.
On being boring
I constantly say I'm a boring person and that's not going to change in this journal.
I continually make these claims for a number of factors, which again will be displayed in a list form:
* I don't play games: This is a hurdle that is consistent both inside the fandom and out, I don't "do" computer games. I'm not good at them, I don't understand them, and I don't always find them interesting. I much rather read an encyclopaedia than play games, and I often do. I've been trying to get more into playing games lately (I played Left4Dead for the first time ever on Saturday), but I'm still utterly hopeless at such stuff.
* I have very few interests: Politics. Website design. After that it's pretty much diddly squat from me. These two things probably make up over 90% of everything I do or discuss.
* I cannot hold a conversation: As with my interests, most of my long-lasting conversations are either roleplay, or related to politics or web design. Any other type of conversation tends to die off in under 10 minutes.
* People do say I'm boring: It's not just me saying it, I have legitimately had people (and not just randomers, people I've known for significant periods of time) tell me that I'm not an easy person to talk to, as discussion topics just don't appear.
I think that's enough for now...

This just in: Fur Affinity is illegal in the United Kingdom
General | Posted 15 years agoAs of yesterday afternoon, it has become illegal to create or possess imagery depicting characters under 18 years of age in sexual acts or with exposed genitalia.
In effect, babyfur pornography is now illegal in the United Kingdom, as is lolicon and any other form of drawn pornography containing children.
Seeing as Fur Affinity allows the hosting of babyfur pornography, it is thus now also illegal to use this website if you are resident in the United Kingdom, as the website is considered to contain images of paedophilia.
More about it on FurteanTimes.com

The Diary of a Fatbat - a project
General | Posted 16 years agoI posted on Twitter that I was thinking of writing a blog or diary of sorts from the point of view of Mr Alexander Grey.
So from last night, I am. The Diary of a Fatbat is pretty much a blog from the point of view of the fatassed, slovenly bat you've all come to know and love. And seeing as it's from the point of view of a fictional character, he may just be a little more interesting than I am!
There's not much going on yet, but hey, there might be some story arc appearing at some point (if I can think of one).

Laptop adaptor is still kaputski
General | Posted 16 years agoDisregardé! I got a new adaptor from Maplin's :D
Looks like I might not be online much for a few days/a week or so - my laptop adaptor, which so valiantly held on for about 5 days has now died completely (complete with sparks and arcing electricity!). I got the new one I ordered off Amazon today... and it's the wrong one.
So now I've fired off an email to get it replaced/refunded, and will have to try again in a few days. That or I might pop down to Maplin's later and see what they can do for me.
Until this is sorted however, I'm pretty much computer-less. My mobile phone (after some coaxing) can get some Internet's on it, so I might make appearances on MSN and whatnot on occasion, but otherwise I'd solely be operating on...

gullible donated the full amount! He'll be getting some awesome luffings! <3The cable for my laptop adaptor (you know, the thing that goes between the laptop and the magic electrical wall plug) has severed. Badly in one place and to lesser extents in two more. The cable, while valiant in trying, can no longer hold a reliable charge; and thus my laptop is currently on it's last 1 hour, 16 minutes of battery life.
Thus, I need a replacement, namely a "ADVENT ACER LAPTOP AC ADAPTOR POWER SUPPLY 19V - 3.42A" (I actually have an Acer Aspire, but all the details match up anyway), which costs a lean £19.80.
Unfortunately, my current budget is a £2.
My allowance next month is also going nearly entirely towards paying website fees, so the most I'll have then is still far short at £6.
My laptop is not just a device I use for browsing
If you're feeling generous, put some bread in my jar by Paypal-ing shaun.hargreaves@gmail.com, otherwise I might be disappearing for a few days, if not weeks. I might draw something for you people generous enough (I of course cannot guarantee any modicum of quality in this matter).
I can still get a bit of charge out of the cable if I wrap it in sticky tape and hold it in a certain way, but I doubt the cable will last until the end of the week, especially at the rate it's degrading. If this is the case, then au revoir, mon frères, may we meet again some day. </overdramatic>
