Image Pack: updates and details (lowering prices for slots)
Posted 13 years agoSome updates for the people who kindly contributed, and the ones who don't know about this Image Pack.
For the newcomers:
The prices is 5 euros (~6.5$), and it contains 20 images, full resolution black and white, made by me and hogswild in real-time collaboration, through OC. Every pic contains at least 2 characters and utter manlyness. For those who want to contribute more, we're giving the possibility to get a custom image for 60 euros (~75$), two characters, the only limit is that they must conform to the theme of the pack (original characters, and bara/chub).
To order, just send me or
hogswild a note.
For the people who already got the pack:
Big thanks from both me and hogswild, you guys have been awesome :3
I think it's fair to share also the exact reason we've been collecting this money: no, it's not booze and games, we needed a dedicated computer to add to our little equipment, to perform testing on it. I'm in the way of finishing the base of a multi-platform 2/3D game engine and me and Hogswild have decided to expand testing outside the intel/ATI range of hardware we currently add, and possibly adding a linux testing partition to the setup (currently, ipad, mac and pc). We don't plan for a fancy box, just enough to get things going forward. Will the money of the pack be enough? I hope so, but however it goes, it's still gonna be a big help toward it.
Finally, we've decided to reduce prices from 80 euros to 60 for the custom slots (we sold 5, and we have 1 left). The price reduction is valid also for the people who already preordered, nobody will be charged 80.
While doing commission over OC is well harder than normally, we thought it was more correct to ask for the same price we would normally ask for a 2 character commission. Difficulty be damned :3

Offering an image pack, in collaboration with Hogswild
Posted 13 years agoMe and
hogswild are trying to put together a little indie gaming team, we're currently putting together a demo and… are in short supply of acorns.
We thought about asking for tips, but not without reward, so we collected our efforts and turn our free time into more slavingworking hours, crafting together an image pack of the highest utmost consumer-approved quality, scoring a 8.8ml of approval from selected critics. The image pack is composed by 20 hi-res images, every image has 2 characters or more, soft-to-full shaded lineart, drawn together via OC, 100% manly guaranteed, price is 5 euros. For those of you who want to contribute more, we also offer a 80 euro tier, which gives you the chance to choose what one of the last six images will feature, just keep in mind it's 2 original characters, bara/chub content, done by me and Hogswild together . We have up to 6 slots open for this.
As it goes with those offers, we'll send the image pack after reaching a sales goal, or after a set amount of time. Thanks already to everybody who will contribute to this :3
You can order by sending a note, or by emailing me biliousboar@gmail.com.
One full-image from the pack is on hogswild's account: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7755060/
While i decided to make a kickstarter parody of it in my gallery, hoping you'll get a laugh outta this: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7755031/

Any furry website i can use to host non-flash videos?
Posted 14 years agoI'm searching for a place to store movies for turn-around 3D animations online which doesn't use flash(1) and allows for naughtiness. Worst case scenario i will dropbox the .mov files and call it a day, but it would be nice to have it on an actual website.
EDIT: thanks for all the replies, i'll check the suggestions ;)
(1) Because it's not secure, nor stable, nor an open standar-OH FUCK THIS BULL, it's because Adobe stole my money by making me buy Photoshop twice and i hate their guts.

Offering 3d commissions, only 2 slots [CLOSED]
Posted 14 years agoSince people really loved my last art experiment, I'm offering 2 commissions made with the same technique of this image: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7196734
That is, integration between 3D sculpture and my classic painting.
PRICES: 120$ with one character and no background (like in the doberman picture).
+ 80$ per extra character (maximum 2 extra characters)
+ 40-80$ for a painted background depending on complexity (i will tell you right before confirming the commission how much the background costs, if you want it). The background will not be 3d sculpted.
RULES:
- I Don't draw: herm, scat, watersport, bestiality, cub, fisting, vore, and inflation.
- I *DO* stream most of my furry work, if you want to take a look just tell me and i'll note you about the time.
HOW THIS WORKS:
1: You'll send me a description of the commission and links to reference of your character/s. I will tell you the exact price and if the commission is accepted (very complex characters may be turned down due to technical difficulty).
2: I'll send you a sketch, you can ask corrections and changes over that. If corrections are very massive i'll send another sketch (this is pretty rare, though, i very rarely feel to have to send more than one sketch).
4: I'll make a sculpt based on the sketch, take a picture of it and paint an illustration on it. I'll show the rough sculpt to you for further corrections (low resolution movie showing the model turning around).
5: You'll get an HD (720p) turn-around movie of the sculpt, and the final painted illustration in high resolution. You can ask also freely ask for more rendered images of the model, up to 10, those extra images won't be painted over and will be background-less.

Who owns a commission?
Posted 14 years agoI get asked a lot of questions regarding commission ownership, usually along the lines "i can post it in my gallery?", so decided to clear things up in this journal. I'm not a lawyer and pretty much every professionally working artist i met gave me a different answer(1), so my opinion is a bit of an average.
Technically, when you pay for a commission, you pay me to make the art, then i give you a copy of the finished piece and gift you extra rights over it. Sounds very weird doesn't it? But that's exactly why furry commissions are underpriced from the market standards: marvel don't pay you to just make a Spiderman page, they pay you to also own and print it (2). And, because the commission i give is a copy plus rights, that *does* leave to the artist full propriety of the art, so on principle, i could demand a customer to not share his copy with anybody (so, yeah, "can i post it?" is actually a very legit question), and if i ever decide to collect my work on a CD, i wouldn't need to ask permission to include the art i did, because it is mine(3).
So that's the bad part for you, now the good part: I'm a cool guy. I give a lot of extra rights other than just a copy.
When i give back a copy of the finished work i also gift you the ability to share it as long as it's not for profit, with no need to ask permissions. I also gift you the ability to make non-profit prints of your commission and the printing guy to do so without paying me royalties. I also grant you full remixing and editing freedom over what you get, and to post the resulting edited version, as long as it's not for resale and original attribution is given (commercial use under fair use is fine by me, just ask to be on the safe side).
Full ownership would cost more on top of my normal fee, and would require some paperwork, but it's something I'm open to do as well.
----
(1) The best one being: "i spent two years with my accountant on this, and basically, do whatever the fuck you want."
(2) Well, except the original piece of paper, that's why artists just want to make 22 pages of pricy illustrations with splash pages of _insert superhero name here_ in a cool pose; to sell fans.
(3) But the characters portrayed? Legit question, on which I'm not so sure. I think I'd be on fault by infringing on trademarked characters, but fanart of your unregistered furry character is a gray area.

Posted 14 years agoI got it by mail, and i can't believe you paid for it.
You are a Master Troll. I respect that. I thought drawing murdered ponies was the epitome of internet awesomeness, but you beat me at the game, point taken.
Seriously, tell me who you are, and by what eldritch inhuman being you want your fursona be raped by.
I'd oblige, for free :3

doppleganger, that filthy terrible monster thing. Unhappy to have commissioned parody versions of me and beefy as goddamn ponies he went the extra mile, cunningly deceiving me into giving my address with promises of chocolate, itunes gift-cards and christmas cards. About the accursed disk of evilness you sent: i'll be storing it under my porn stash, and when i'm about to die i will bind my immortal soul to it, to haunt you as an eternal arch-lich of furfag anger. You shall hear the sounds of my rusty and spiky metal dildoes clashing from under your window, you will panic but that will be too late, as retribution has finally forever come. It will be a nice eternity in hell.

The great artist unwatching me precompiled form.
Posted 14 years agoLast thing i'm going to post about this whole bronieleaks affair.
Due to the recent mischievous behavior perpetrated by me and
i was notified that many important artists are unwatching me. I didn't notice it because there are sadly no "unwatched" notices on this website. Even worse me and beefeater got submerged by "THANK GOD FINALLY SOMEBODY DREW THAT" notes which make the great artist unsatisfaction notes hardly noticeable.
To solve the problem here's an easy to use and quick to compile "I hate you two, die in a fire" notice. Please compile and submit this to our customer care support teams.
"Dear [MONSTERS/INAPPROPRIATE ARTIST/FILTHY BOAR AND UGLY WALRUS/PEOPLE WHO OWE US MONEY],
i'm a [GREAT CONCEPT ARTIST WHO DOES MORE THAN 4000$ WORTH OF ILLUSTRATIONS BY MONTH/SOMEBODY NOBODY CARES ABOUT/THE GUY WHO GAVE YOU 100$ EACH], due to [THE RECENT DRAMA/THOSE DAMN 100$], i've decided to [UNWATCH YOU/MURDER YOU TWO IN YOUR SLEEP], and i hereby made present my unsatisfaction with [YOUR WORK/YOU TWO STILL BREATHING].
Signed: ______________________
PS: [DRAW MORE TAUREN COCKS/MY FUCKING MONEYYYYYY]."
Thank you.

Help bronies offended by lack of "I HATE PONIES" reaction.
Posted 14 years agoI feel for them, obsessing on a 6-years-olds-show without even getting the anti-conformist-elite-high must feel sad and a bit pointless.
So, let's make those guys happy: write something evil about ponies, complain about the fairly harmless banner, i don't know just yell at them for no reason! Please make those people feel at least a bit not completely uninteresting D:
And pronies please, spam more ponies, so that we can hate you for some good reason instead of just the sheer boredom of your obsession.

Posted 14 years agoOpening (finally!) my tumblr page http://alpha0.tumblr.com/ , right now there are a couple of debug posts and a smartass badger, I'm going to push updates on my Augmented art project (and future ones) from tomorrow evening (italy time). Feel free to drop questions, I'll try to understand how to answer!
To my Augmented commissioners: i checked your submitted references, and they are all fine. Tomorrow will mostly be a resource gathering day (references, first layouts, etc...).

Update on the "Augmented" project, CLOSED
Posted 14 years agoGood news, we reached the 4 participants needed for this to start!
Thank you guys for sponsoring such an initiative :D
If somebody wants in, bidding for a place is still available (details on the project and pricing description here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2670780/).
Here's an easier recap of who got in, for now:
Nightphaser: 110 euro.
Amenophis: 91 euro.
Sokrates: 90 euro.
Seawolf: 90 euro.
I will update this list as bids come in.
PS: To all the uninterested readers, sorry for spamming a second journal, but i needed to clarify the bids due to requests. It's the first time i allow for bidding commission slots, the next time i'll organize something similar i'll do everything in a single post.

"Augmented", a commission art experiment: 4 slots available.
Posted 14 years agoProject description: Making four, fully painted, full body portraits and a final poster-sized composition of the 4 characters.
The characters will be re-imagined "augmented": taking inspiration from the style of Deus Ex:Human revolution: that is, cybernetic implants with a beautiful organic look, and a strong renaissance vibe in both pose, design, and final composition, example from the game: here and here.
The game touches the theme of body enhancement, beauty and re-modelling, something i think marries perfectly what furry is about for a lot of people, and that got me inspired to propose this project. The paintings will contain tasteful artistic nudity: it's all about the body. The cybernetic parts will be designed by me, based on your character shape and feel, and will not be showed or discussed until the final painting is done, i'll try for an elegant yet powerful feel. Heads and genitalia will be mostly left untouched to avoid scary or gross results.
The work:
Working on the four pieces will begin Monday 12 September and the finished painting will be sent by monday 19 September. The final composition will be delivered in the following week.
I'll need an image of the character you want re-imagined, and a brief description of your character personality. If the character has already mechanical parts, i'll modify them just enough to make them fit with the theme.
What you will get:
A full painting of your character alone, poster-sized (A3) and 300dpi resolution. Those paintings will not be posted publicly, unless i get requested by the commissioner to do so. And a final composition of the 4 characters together, sized as a desktop background, but also as a printable A3 poster.
On my galley will be posted: one version of the poster-like final image, and one small version of the 4 single character painting themselves, and maybe a collage of details taken from the full paintings. I reserve the right to use this art on my portfolio, and to offer prints. Commissioners will: keep all their rights on the original characters, take all the rights on the new designs, and will be free to redistribute the art as they see fit, including commercially, as long as i'm credited as the artist (translations: you can do what the hell you want with it, as long as you say it's from Alpha0, i can't do anything with your character outside the resulting art, except showing those paintings around and maybe doing a couple of prints.)
The price:
Participation is 70 euro (roughly 100 us dollars), but I will accept bids: meaning i will take the 4 best paying participants, while bids of the same amount of money will be considered in the order i received them (so, if i get 5 bids at 70eur, i'll take the first four). Bidding will close Wednesday 7 September, midnight, italian time. If 4 participants aren't reached, the project will be cancelled. All the bids will be converted in euro before evaluation, at the exchange rate of 7/9/2011.
Feel free to ask details on the comments, both on the commission rules and what i want to achieve with this!
No conspiracy will be harmed in the making of this project.

A response on Artdecade's amazing journal
Posted 14 years agoI invite everybody to read this amazing journal here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/2642305/ also, check out his art, he's really really good :)
ON PIRACY
First of all, i like pirates. They are art consumers, and i base my living on the concept of people consuming art. They aren't thieves, nor bad people, they are customers who don't want to BUY A COPY. This is key. They do like you, as an artist, they do like your product, as a furry comic, they do want to read it, but they want you to stop trying to sell copies.
Selling art without copies isn't an intuitive concept, but there are already ad-powered free newspapers, banners, selling easy access or simplified services (like what Steam or the App Store so for games), selling access to a forum and a community of people with similar interests, or even turning the whole business upside down and getting people to pay you to draw the comic in the first place (ala Kickstarter). Those are all ways to do business with people who do NOT want to buy a copy. In less than 30 years, this will be 100% of paying public for any kind of "popular" art, so: if a business model isn't preparing itself to be slowly converted to a 100% piracy environment… it's just time to think an escape plan. It's sad when a job disappears, but it happens all the time, the copy-seller artist will soon met his business ancestor: the copying and miniaturist monk of the thirteen century.
ON COMMISSIONS
Commissions are how art was supposed to work all along: a customer wants an art piece and offers food, and an artist wants to realize his craft but also eat: the compromise between the two contrasting forces is the basis of creativity and drove art pretty much for all its history: Michelangelo painted with a commissioner pope breathing behind his neck all the time, i don't think his art looks bad or boring. Conflict is to art what war is to technology; the cold war stopped: humanity never reached mars.
The concept of an artist without a customer, creating art "just because he loves it" is perhaps the biggest lie ever diffused by the "romantic" press that followed the rediscovery of impressionism, it had little to no basis on reality, the artist who paints for himself is the hobbits with a cellar full of unwanted paintings, the people actually cited on art books all had commissioners. Sometimes the customer isn't a person, but a whole subculture, which explains works of the likes of Robert Crumb, sometimes a bank in need to avoid too many taxes, sometimes the customer is the skilled salesman who can "use" those pictures, and resell them in a gallery, or sell lots of of copies to secondary customers, with prints, books, as ads or inside comics. Independence is the gift an artist gets gradually with fame, but i still have doubts Lucio Fontana continued to cut canvasses for all his life because he felt just “inspired” to do so.
The biggest problem with furry commissions is the lack of awareness of young artists to the concept of sustainability.
A lot of artist end up stuck in what i define as the over-delivery spiral: when they rise to "fame" they create pieces that require extreme care and time, they push their technique to the limit not caring for the effort needed, and, since Furry is like every other market and you have to see the prices around, they have to undersell it compared to the work it needed so that the market can absorb them, a sum which in furry fandom is sometimes truly a pittance. The final result is an... abusive relationship, where the people who love you are actually ripping you off, and you end up hating your customers.
I've touched working rates as low as 6$/hour, which is INSANE, and i know artists who fell under 4$/h, and even if some of the resulting works are among the best this fandom has to offer this is just pointless willing slavery. Especially if the commission is porn, which mean it will never ever escape the furry fandom or be justified as portfolio material.
Overworked art isn't even a Furry Fandom specific problem: i know a lot of guys who went to publishers with amazing portfolios, only to strike down contacts for tons of 30$ per illustration where talent is worth like used cat bedding, and being torn between survival and… continue being awesome. The most common rejection motivation i got the first time i showed my portfolio was a sad: "We can't afford this quality”, or “we can’t pay color stuff”.
Man up, and drop down quality. No, seriously, dropping quality is as much as a challenge as is pushing that realistic fur texture to the limit, except it's not going to make you go broke and shut down a gallery in a rage fit. I check the workability of my techniques all the times, and sometimes i just stop to get things to go faster. When people pay you 50$ you should work for 3 hours MAX, if you are doing more, there's something wrong with your offer and your technique. And never ever forget lateral possible gains, like building folios of your commissions (or making customer pay for exclusivity), using some real media from time to time, as digital art is completely worthless unless the quality is nothing short of amazing, and offering limited prints and signed stuff... the list is long.
Artist who can control quality and can give to the commissioner half baked stuff with a straight face are doing serious money on this website. They are better artists than the "i will draw every single hair of your character one by one, for 10 bucks" folks: they are thinking this as a job not an hobby. If i had an euro for every time i get a link to this or that "hack", making a ton of money from low quality art, i would get rich myself. My art, right now, is unsustainable to furry standards, i have lots of plans to make the situation less bad. Should i fail at that, i'll just drop from the commission business altogether. I don't think it's unprofitable, but i'm just unfit to mass production of backgroundless sketches.
Finally, other than lowering quality, start to be smarter with what you offer. A lot of rules of traditional art do not work on furry art and porn, look at who sells good, and steal their winning concepts.
ON COMICS
Full disclosure: i'm working on a furry comics right now, and finished preproduction on a second one. The distribution plans are pretty cloudy on both of them, the second one i will pirate myself, offering a pirate-tailored version for them to enjoy.
I really don’t like the idea of suggesting people to do comics: it’s an risky and front-loaded business which requires distribution infrastructure or over-reliance on people good will, and the risk of sitting over unsellable pages. Finally, as you must cater to a mass of fans, you’re going to draw mass-furry-marked chowder, which means comics have also a bigger potential for creativity-bankrupt. In fact, furry comics are almost ALREADY creatively bankrupt from my point of view, with almost copy-pasted plot in a different setting.
On top of all that, comics are hard. And i mean, HARD. Bad panel work, bad composition, bad character management, inconstant art, lack of storytelling skill, or just plain bad are pretty much the norm on every furry comic i’ve read with an handful of exceptions. What makes furry comics interesting now, is simply a matter of extremely thin production against enormous demand and the security that, even if everything is crap, there’s going to be some decent porn in it.
Finally: i know a lot of people who are actively pushed into piracy after getting ripped off from dull comics.
IN CONCLUSION:
Be realistic with your commission, really, drop the pretense furry fandom can sustain amazing full-page paintings, or think at least getting paid in 2 or 3 ways for every single commission you do. Use auctions to measure your actual value, focus on what your customer wants, and don’t work just for art’s sake. If you can do a decent “i’m a teen discovering i’m gay” comic, go for it, people’s gonna love it. If you want to make a different comic, think of a character, and build the comic over it, always focus on how to sell that character: this is how a successful comics in real world works.

Example of final quality: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/5946258
Price: 15$ x slot (inked art), 35$ x slot (colored with the same style of the example piece). Note: you can upgrade from inked to color if you like the final piece, by sending the extra 20$ (paypal fees are on the customer, keep that in mind).
Because those are quick sketches, i will require an image for reference of the character you want portrayed.
All the 12 slot/characters will be done this sunday and monday (inked version) and delivered like that, colored ones will follow shortly during the next days. I will stream the drawing themselves sunday and monday, but i'm not sure how many i can do livestraming, so if you want to see the stream, signal it in your reserve (first come first serve rule :).
