RAF Waddington Airshow consigned to the history books
Posted 10 years agoEmpire of the Clouds Iron Maiden
Posted 10 years agothere are few songs that take my intrest but Bruce Dickinson 18 minute epic about the R101 airship disaster whch put a end to the uk airship prigram of the 1930s.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/R101
Beginning with a beautiful piano piece accompanied by strings and a marching snare beat, “Empire of the Clouds” remains calm while Bruce narrates the tragic R101 airship disaster of 1930. Bruce’s lifelong passion for aircraft pierces through the opus, giving “Empire” an extra sense of heart which simply cannot be manufactured. Fans may expect a turbulent 18 minutes considering the track’s subject matter, but “Empire of the Clouds” approaches chaos rather passively, instead remaining focused on theatrical mastery often found in a Broadway playhouse. Each bit of trouble never overwhelms Bruce’s narration, much like past Maiden long forms “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” or “Where the Wild Wind Blows.”

A Noble Boy by Mary Dow Brine 1878
Posted 10 years agoThis poem was read at my Grandadds funeral ( Robert Stewart 1928 2015 )
They found it in a box in his bedroom. They did not know why it was there they guseed it was read at his parents furneral. If i Remember correctly he had to learn it at school.
A Noble Boy
by Mary Dow Brine 1878
(Sometimes miscalled Somebody’s Mother)
The woman was old and feeble and grey,
And bent with the chill of the winter's day;
The street was wet with the recent snow,
And the woman's feet were weary and slow.
She stood at the crossing and waited long,
Alone,uncared for,amid the throng.
Down the street with laughter and shout,
Glad in the freedom of 'school let out'
Came the boys, like a flock of sheep,
Hailing the snow, piled white and deep.
Past the woman,so old and grey,
Hastened the children on their way;
Nor offered a helping hand to her,
So meek, so timid, afraid to stir.
At last came one of the merry troop
The gayest boy of all the group;
He paused beside her and whispered low,
‘I'll help you across if you wish to go’;
He guided the trembling feet along,
Proud that his own were firm and strong,
Then back again to his friends he went,
His young heart happy and well content,
‘She is somebody's mother boys you know,
Although she is old and poor and slow,
And I hope some fellow will lend a hand,
To help my mother - you understand
If e'er she be poor and old and grey,
When her own dear boy is far away.’
And ‘somebody's mother’ bowed low her head,
In her home that night and the prayer she said,
Was ‘God be kind to the noble boy,
Who is somebody's son and pride and joy.’

Lady into Fox by David Garnett
Posted 10 years agoI have finally managed to get a copy of lady into a fox. I first spotted this book the same time i saw wolves of time by William Horwood in the Library at the collage i went to. while i read wolves of time i regretted not reading lady into a fox. i could not find a copy of it until a few days ago.
Lady into Fox was David Garnett's first novel under his own name, published in 1922. This short and enigmatic work won the James Tait Black Memorial Prize, and the Hawthornden Prize a year later.
Sylvia Tebrick, the 24-year-old wife of Richard Tebrick, suddenly turns into a fox while they are out walking in the woods. Mr. Tebrick sends away all the servants in an attempt to keep Sylvia's new nature a secret, although Sylvia's childhood nurse returns. While Sylvia initially acts human, insisting on wearing clothing and playing piquet, her behaviour increasingly becomes that characteristic of a vixen, causing the husband a great deal of anguish. Eventually, Mr. Tebrick releases Sylvia into the wild, where she gives birth to five cubs, whom Tebrick names and plays with every day. Despite Tebrick's efforts to protect Sylvia and her cubs, she is ultimately killed by dogs during a hunt; Tebrick, who tried to save Sylvia from the dogs, is badly wounded, but eventually recovers.

World's Only Bristol Blenheim Mk.I flies again
Posted 11 years agoThursday, 20 November 2014 saw the long-anticipated return to flight of the Aircraft Restoration Company’s Bristol Blenheim Mk.I L6739 (G-BPIV) at IWM Duxford following a long-term restoration of more than a decade. Elliott Marsh writes for GAR.
It would be fair to call the Bristol Blenheim’s first post-restoration flight one of the most eagerly anticipated and important events on the European historic aviation circuit this year. After taxi trials on Wednesday, 19 November 2014, John Romain (accompanied by John Gilmore) flew the Blenheim from its Duxford base on Thursday, 20 November 2014, carrying out a 20 minute test flight 1520.

Aardman film for revamped London war museum
Posted 11 years agoAardman creates ‘Flight of the Stories’ film to mark the opening of IWM London’s new First World War Galleries
To mark the opening of new First World War Galleries at IWM London on 19 July and the wider centenary commemorations, Aardman has created a special short film Flight of the Stories, which will be screened online and in cinemas from today, 7 July.
Flight of the Stories depicts the journey of personal stories and letters written by those who never left the fields of Northern France during the First World War. ‘Quotation mark’ characters symbolising these stories emerge as lines are read from a selection of the thousands of letters and diaries entrusted to IWM by relatives during and after the First World War. As the voices gather, the bird-like characters join to form a flock, taking flight across Northern France and the English Channel, over London, and finally resting at IWM London ready to share their stories again, one hundred years on.
Aardman, widely known for its work on Wallace and Gromit, Creature Comforts and Morph, combined 2D illustrations and 3D CGI animation techniques to create a hybrid effect, bringing to life the bold landscapes and muted palettes of war artists from the era. This film has been created working alongside Johnny Fearless; the ad agency leading the museum’s reopening creative campaign.
Diane Lees, Director-General, IWM said; “Flight of the Stories captures exactly what we were trying to convey – for while it is true that some of the people never made it back from the fighting front, their stories have, and it is our duty at IWM to ensure that they continue to be told. This is what we will be doing in our new First World War Galleries, throughout the centenary and beyond. We do hope that the public will share this beautiful film as widely as possible and that they will be encouraged to reflect upon the stories of those who lived and died throughout the First World War.”
IWM London will reopen on 19 July, with new First World War Galleries, a transformed Atrium space and new exhibition Truth and Memory; British Art of the First World War. This £40 million transformation has been made possible with the support of a number of funders, sponsors, trusts, foundations and individuals, including a grant of £6.5 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund and £5million from the Department of Culture, Media and Sport.
Flight of the Stories will be screened online and in cinemas from Monday 7 July.
