General | Posted 16 years agoThis will be Day 3 of E3 for me....followed IMMEDIATELY by Califur. My feet will not be loving me very much on Sunday :(
E3 has been awesome so far. The best part has been running into folks from where I worked, other folks in the industry I know, and people from school. And hanging out after the show at the bars ;)
But yeah been playing some neat games and getting some cool schwag. Gamespot was handing out magic 8 balls yesterday for instance that say things like "epic fail" and "game on".
AND Stan Lee was at the show yesterday signing stuff. Too many folks for me to jump into the line, BUT I did get some pics I hope to post either here or on my Flickr.

Exhibit A: horny republican senate aide who happens to be a fur.

Now, notice how both articles mention that the party in question was associated with furries BUT makes a point that both stalking underage boys and bestiality are NOT the norms for the fandom. Look at how far we've come since the day of Sex2K ;)
The reaction to this news has seemed to be that the coverage of these stories is bad for the fandom. But...here is where I take pause. I posit that rather than coverage, and even scrutiny of, of the "bad apples" of the fandom is not a negative thing at all. Indeed, I think this could be potentially healthy- as long as the few bad apples are not being associated with the whole.
Anyone who doesnt admit that the fandom has its dark side is lying to themselves. Yes, the majority of furries are just somewhat geeky folks with an interest in anthropomorphics, even sexually so. But we all know that there is a fringe minority that engages in behaviors that are despicable and just plain wrong.
If these folks are found out, and if they are doing something illegal and it is brought to light and the right thing is done- is this really a bad thing for the fandom? The furry fandom is an open, non-judgmental place- which is great- but do we really need to shelter and protect such people as those revealed in the articles? And especially since the fandom itself is NOT being branded here as the pedophillic, dog-fucking mess it might have been even a few years ago.
Just a thought. Maybe I'm wrong, but thats just how it seems to me.

General | Posted 16 years agoIf you havent already. It's definitely one of my favorite movies at this point. Normally, I hesitate before saying that a movie I just saw is going on my top 10 all-time list, and there's probably one other movie I've ever seen where I walked out and knew it was up there (Shaun of the Dead).
Up is fucking amazing. If you have a heart you will cry. But it is sooooo good. I've seen it 3 times now.
Pixar is incredible. Except for Cars. But usually, wow. And this is no exception.

State Parks Face Serious Threat of Closure, Pt II
General | Posted 16 years ago...except this time I feel its something of an inevitability.
The stakes are much more dire now. 220 state parks in California face closure thanks to the current recession and the fact that California is seriously bankrupt. So bankrupt that schools can no longer have summer school.
So, as much as I adore the wild places in California and feel very strongly they should be protected and preserved, I do see this as being something that is inevitable.
All I can say is that this whole damned state is going to shit. Forget about breaking off from North America, we're just going to drown in debt and all our highways will collapse from disrepair.
Cynical raptorkitty is cynical.
However, I do love Bee.
And, may it be known that I plan to continue to visit the wild places irregardless. They are integral to my spirituality, and I feel to my own well-being. I'm willing to risk a fine for that.

BUT I am interviewing today for a QA job that I feel I pretty much have in the bag. QA= Game Testing. It really, really sucks as a job, but its one of the standard routes into the industry. So I figure I'll do this for awhile, and then move on to bigger and better things.
Oh, and I'll be at E3 this year :)
And my kitty, whom I've named Bee, is going to have a buddy since I promised her that if I wasn't going to have to move.
Things aren't so bad I guess after all.

update: I went with a different kitty. Pics to come. She's a special needs girl though :( the adoption agency was not very forthcoming about her medical conditions. She's almost deaf, and might have a thyroid condition and has bad teeth. But she's the sweetest thing EVER!

My North Carolina Adventure...YAY!
General | Posted 16 years agoSo, I just came back from North Carolina from a job interview with a game company out there (NO, it's not Epic, sit down). I think the interview went well...I met with the design and production teams and had lunch. Even met with the president of the company. All in all, I think they liked me...so there's a chance that I might be moving to North Carolina soon.
Coming back did not go quite as smoothly. The flight out of Raleigh-Durham was delayed by an hour and a half due to "trim loose on the wing of the plane" (WTF?) and I missed my connecting flight out of Houston. As a result, I ended up spending the night last night at the Houston Marriot airport.
To make matters worse, somewhere in the confusion, I lost my Driver's License, making getting through security today a BITCH. I know ya guys don't do profiling, but really now, do I LOOK like I'm about to blow up your plane?
Anyways, the point is...I got home at last. And I;m feeling jet lagged and grumpy.

General | Posted 16 years agoWell...been laying low the past few days because my grandma recently fell and was placed in a board and care, leaving me alone at home trying to deal with bills and such, all the while still looking for work.
I have a few prospects in North Carolina and Texas...so the chances of me relocating are pretty good at this point.
Needless to say, I'm gonna be pretty busy the next few weeks.
And I'm graduating from school next week! Go me!

Who is a furry?
General | Posted 16 years agoI'm inspired to write this after reading a long drawn-out argument on a local mailing list regarding who furries are.
I've seen this debate come up before as the whole lifestyler vs. fan argument, with some lifestylers claiming that furry fans are not furries and with some fans saying that they are furries, but not "that kind," in reference to those "creepy" lifestylers. Again, I'm saying some fans and some lifestylers, obviously not all.
Soooo I humbly propose the following (although I'm hardly the originator of this point of view):
If claim to be a furry, you are a furry.
The fact there is no litmus test in this fandom I believe is one of its greatest strengths. Furry is however you care to define it on an individual level. The last thing we need is furry elitism and "furry tests" when there's already plenty of in-fandom drama.
Soooo yeah....raptorkitty pontificating as if it really matters XD

Graduation is ONE MONTH away...
General | Posted 16 years agoI am graduating from college in a month, and I am really nervous about what the heck I'm gonna do next. For the first time in my life, there's no obvious "next step".
What's worse is that as of the day I graduate I will be unemployed. My internship- which was for school credit only- will be terminated. I'll have my senior thesis- a mod for Unreal Tournament 3- and my resume in hand, and I'll have to somehow find work in an industry flooded with people far more experienced than me who were just laid off looking for work as well...
If I'm not around alot in the next few weeks, I'll be desperately trying to get my shit together >.< Any requests I have still pending will be done, but please be patient!

General | Posted 16 years agoTomorrow, as of 0700 hours I will be headed up north to San Francisco for the Game Developer's Conference. I've never been to GDC before, or E3 (I know, shame on me)...and actually, I've never been to a professional/industry related conference before...just silly fur cons ;)
I imagine it will be somewhat like a furry convention in that there will be plenty of things to see and do and lose lots of money in the process on things I'll later reflect on as being rather frivolous...minus the pictures of animal cawk.
So...since I am minus a laptop, I will be without internet access until Sat. night/Sunday.
Here's hoping I meet some awesome folks and learn some new stuff...and *crosses fingers* get my resume and business cards out to the right people. I don't expect to get a job out of this- soooo many people are looking for work right now in the industry due to the economy- but getting my name out never hurts, right?
On a more serious note...layoffs suck :\ I know lots of folks right now who are in that situation right now, and its really rough no matter what- it sucks saying goodbye to some of the really awesome people you work with on stuff.

You've been in a digital media program for several years now, and you still haven't gotten that much fucking down. Congratulations, you've officially failed.
I realize you might not have noticed that the drive was not ejected while I stepped out to use the restroom, and that you were just too damn lazy to be bothered to check. I'm sorry that I would expect you to inconvenience yourself to that degree.
Thanks to you, you've just lost me three weeks worth of work on my senior thesis. Yes, I know I should have been backing up my work more often than that- but I really wouldn't be in this mess if you weren't such a moron now would I?
