Adafruit NeoPixel strips!
Posted 11 years agoMy new addressable LED strips have arrived! I bought both 30 and 60 LEDs per meter (I'm really digging 60 per meter). The arduino and the strip runs perfectly off a single 5v 500mA USB port on my laptop which leaves me hopeful that
Kyralie will be able to use smaller batteries and have it last longer than our first experiment did.
Now I gotta figure out where blue begins and ends with RGB values. Should be easy but it's driving me nuts.

Musings
Posted 11 years agoSo...I've been dicking around with these 5050 LEDs but it seems kinda limited. If all you can do is control an entire length of lights all the same way you can't do much with it. Don't get me wrong, having them illuminate behind a bigass TV doing visualizations for music is lovely but we're trying to look at what works in a fursuit.
Chameleons aren't one solid color no matter how their chromatophores are doing. The patterns on any real animal are rarely 100% symmetrical so why should these lights? I've ordered the addressable LEDs and they shipped today so hopefully I'll have them by week's end. Calculus is kicking my ass and it's only week two starting tomorrow (I'm screwing up on the algebra in ways that don't make any sense to me)...not sure I'll have time to do much beyond set up some example code and verify everything works. Maybe figure out the addressing system and pencil out some patterns.
Granted I'm shooting to have my side of things finished by BLFC so that Kyralie can have a new fancy tail to show off and that's only what, mid May? Oodles of time. But I'm soooo excited to actually work on electronics again! I used to burn so much time soldering parts into video game consoles either for modification purposes or for repair purposes and my interest in that crash and burned around this time last year (or earlier?). Hobbyist electronics were a passion of mine that I'm still trying to figure out why I put it aside.
Looking forward to producing something fun for a change. ^_^

PCD
Posted 11 years agoTime to fight my first case of PCD by filling this out as per the suggestion of my good friend Kyralie.
