Posted 4 months agoMore Xanadu story ideas
Posted 5 months agoWas just talking with an old fannish friend the other night about the Xanadu series, the Vicky Wyman one, and it got off on some odd tangents about 'potential story ideas'.
I mentioned an old idea I had about how the vixen Fatima probably visited her lover Tabbe down in the 'Wallows', which seems to be a slum set close by the Imperial Palace. No city beyond that, mind you, just a slum. Really given how all we've ever seen of Xanadu is the Imperial Palace, the Wallows, and a port city, I'm left wondering how this place rates as an 'empire'. The Wallows is much like the pre-modern cities described by Poul Anderson in his not well enough known essay 'On Thud and Blunder' -- a pit of savagery and vice with a few, probably very well-guarded, spots of relative safety. This was born out in the original story given that much of what we see of the Wallows is of a violent and lawless place, and the one time Fatima visits Tabbe he bluntly tells her that "The Wallows is no safe place for a lovely lady like you!"
Now Fata, it should be pointed out, is described as 'a little naive about life outside the Imperial Court'. Mostly because she was brought there when she was six years old to be a companion/playmate for then-Imperial Princess Alicia, and she lived there ever since. She's also described as generous, compassionate, and very lovely by the standards of her society. So I mentioned to my friend, "What happens when Fata goes down to visit her boyfriend, notices how harsh life is for most of these people, and decides that she'll come back later with gold and food for them? Given that she probably wears her jewelry and court clothes, as we saw her do in the story?" Though Fatima did have the sense to cover them with a dark cloak.
His response was, "The same thing that happens to foolish young women in real life who try that. She ends up in a headline, but not the way she wanted."
Myself, given that Fata's face and name are probably known? She is the lady in waiting to the empress, and she wears the sort of clothes and jewelry are obviously for a lady of the court. I suspect that even the densest thug would know what that means, and what would likely happen if they tried to mug her or worse. Still there's always someone dumb enough to grab first and ponder the consequences later.
Though he agreed with me that the well-meaning vixen would almost certainly be sent on her way by the locals. "This isn't the palace, and you don't belong here. Get out, and take the trouble you bring back with you!"
Mind that I think a story where Fatima ends up stuck somewhere in the Wallows while both Tabbe and the Imperial Guard turn the place upside down looking for the vixen could be either comical or tragic depending on how it was written.

Remembering Vicky and Xanadu
Posted 6 months agoJust checked out a I got from Vicky Wyman so many years ago where she mentioned just how old Alicia the unicorn empress, Kinomon the Golden Dragon, and Tzu Kai the Kyryn, who was sort-of the main enemy along with his twin sister Tzu Li in the second Xanadu limited series, 'Across Diamond Seas'.
According to her, Alicia was physically thirty-six and emotionally about nineteen, while Tzu Kai and his sister were both twenty-two, but emotionally about twelve each. Which really became a problem when you learn that Kyryn don't use magic like other Xanadan Nobles, they are magic all the way through. And even though Kai and Li were young and occasionally ran out of energy for their magic, they were powerful enough to ignore dragonfire. And to transform Alicia into an alicorn by removing the wings from a griffin pirate who attacked their island and instantly grafting them to her body. As well as granting her enough skill to glide to the ground as she was falling to her death. So near godlike magic power coupled with a twelve-year-old's emotional control and a near total lack of understanding of things like mortality and death. Because Kyryn live for about 10,000 years.
Just checking out my old (and sole) letter I ever got from Vicky Wyman where she mentioned just how

Because Kyryn live for about 10,000 years.
Thankfully they were more mischievous than malicious.
I also like how Vicky idly commented, "Oh, and Kinomon is eighty. He doesn't look it, does he?"
I also once asked her how well Alicia and Kinomon would take it when their short-lived Freeborn and Domestique friends died long before they did. Her answer was "Badly." Fatima the vixen, Alicia's closest friend and confidant, is in her mid-20's. And she'll be gone long before Alicia will. Vicky said that Alicia was going to be devastated when her 'sister' died and it was going to take a long time for her to recover.
I wonder if Alicia ever did completely recover. In a later series set in the Xanadu fanzine, 'Xanadu 2000', set 1000 years after the first three series, we see the inside of the Imperial Palace for several scenes. And in the background of many of them are small statues and wall hangings that depict a vixen like Fatima, often done as if she were dancing. I've often wondered if those were from Alicia's time as a way to remember the first real friend she ever had.

Bad news about Ironbadger/Steve Corbett
Posted 6 months agoA little over a week ago, Steve fell and broke his right hip. He's had an operation to repair the break and is on the mend, but it'll be a month or so before he can go home.
I have a contact phone number for him but I'm not sure if I should just post it here. Right now I'd rather say that if you want to call him, please PM me and I'll forward it to you. He would enjoy having some people to talk to. The staff at his nursing home are okay, but apparently they don't speak or read much English. Which can be a problem when you have dietary restrictions and the like.
Steve is at the Anaheim Crest Nursing Center under the name Steven Corbett, in room 134A.
Like I said, if you want his number please ask in a PM and I'll send it to you.

Question about some Vicky Wyman art
Posted 9 months agoJust got a question here. I have some scanned by me art by own of my favorite and now gone artists, Vicky Wyman (I still miss you, Vicky). It's work of hers that AFAIK has never, ever been posted online before. Would anyone here want to see it? And if so, provided I posted it simply so people could see some (mostly) early and hard to find by now art by her, would it be okay to post it in my gallery provided I made it clear it wasn't mine?
I admit, I would love to share it. Vicky had trouble with getting her art scanned for years and a LOT of her work never got online. I'd like for it to be out there for people like me who enjoy her work.

Ever-Changing Palace, 9 or 10 issues
Posted 10 months agoI keep seeing mention online that there were 10 issues of the Xanadu fanzine 'The Ever-Changing Palace'. But I've never seen more than 9 issues. Is there a 'lost' tenth issue of the fanzine, or is this just another case of the internet being wrong?

Rent-a-Friend -- Yes, this is a real business
Posted a year agoIn the "I couldn't make this up if I tried" category, I was cruising Wikipedia and I saw some unusual entries.
Like 'Rental Family Service' from Japan which is just what it sounds like - people you hire to pretend to be your family at various social events. I'm left wondering if this is funny or just plain sad. I mean, if this were still the 80's or 90's, I could see a sitcom or comedy film done where some guy hires a woman and some kids to pretend to be his family to keep out of trouble with his boss or to get a raise ("I need to support this family, sir!"). Hey, the Three Stooges pretended to be war orphans for a millionaire whose trendy wife wanted to get in on the latest WW2 fad. Of course that all ended very badly.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Renta.....family_service
And of course America has its own version, Rent-a-Friend.
https://rentafriend.com/
Yes, you can actually make money pretending to be someone's friend. I do wonder about the sort of people who are customers for this service. Maybe I've seen too many comedies and horror movies where you find out the hard way that your 'new friend' is some sort of lunatic or sadistic maniac.
This also reminds me of the standard furry fiction plot #2, or maybe 3, of 'furries created to be sexual partners for lonely and deserving nerds like the author'. 'Furries created as sexual partners for rotten horny creeps' is probably standard furry plot #4 or 5. What if said furry wasn't made to be a bed toy, but to provide companionship for someone who desperately needs it? Like, say, someone who is both elderly and has a sizeable estate? Of course they decide in the end to leave everything to 'My only friend Fuzzy'. And the human relations of the deceased decide they want their slice of the pie, and...
I can remember years ago seeing a well-done story with a female dog furry who was created to be the companion and sorta-nurse to a youngster with some serious health issues. It was very sweet and tragic ending with the kid dying and her committing suicide when she realized that nobody needed or wanted her any more.
