New blog post: Three Pantheons Workshop
Posted 4 days agoGoing to be dissecting elements of the original setting to analyze what they were trying to do for the narrative, how they worked, how they didn't work, and figure out how to adjust.

Who Am I? (Not Jean Valjean)
Posted a month agoNew blog post exploring my name and how I view myself.
Starting a blog
Posted 2 months agoStill getting everything set up right, but you can stop by! First few posts are up.
For now the blog is "Hawk and Awe", but "Text over Avian Carrier" or "Red-y for Takeoff" might be used later. We'll see.

So, Arrow, how's it going?
Posted 3 months agoHonestly, pretty well. But there's a lot I want to cover, so I'm gonna make a journal about some things I've gotten questions about and other things I plan to do.
I've been putting this off for a while trying to get it worded right, and I think that's making me procrastinate, so I'm just going to punch it out, stream of consciousness.
Gallery Revamp
So I've had my FA gallery active and uploading since about 18 years ago. In that time, the internet has changed substantially. A lot of my older images I have in higher resolution, but at the time I uploaded, limitations on file size were a problem. Furthermore, the underlying structure of FA has changed. New species groups, new tags, more options. Folders. I want to revamp the gallery with better quality images, in some cases anti-AI coverage, and present a more consistent vision of my work.
This is not going to be a fast process, but the longer I put it off, the worse it's going to be. I'm not sure exactly how to attack this, probably a few images at a time as I upload them, fix text errors, and so on. New folders to categorize. We'll see.
Filler Content
Over the last few years, I've been using 4 The Words to help improve my writing productivity. Results have been...mixed. I started out strong, but for a few years I went into a deep creative funk, where creating and writing was difficult at all. I really feel I was kinda phoning it in on a lot of stuff during that time. This is where the AMAs and Cutting Room Floor originally came from, and honestly, I plan to continue both. There's a lot of stuff I never finish for various reasons, and there's nothing saying I can't use it. Should help me some to get more of my stuff out to people to review. I always have more ideas than I can follow up on anyways.
Under Construction
While I have many characters in my main roster, 10 at last count, (sorry, Kobi, you didn't quite land right), they're from multiple different settings. Now, another thing is that when I was younger, I often would write in other settings with permission. However, a lot of the creators have moved on from where my characters are, and have given me permission to revamp the settings as I wished for my own use. I've actually had that for over a decade, but I just...wasn't exercising it. Recently I ran an extensive RP plot on one of my inherited worlds that significantly altered it, and honestly, now I crave for more. So expect to see more changes to things; I don't need to be shackled to the desires of a long absent creator, I'm in charge, I have permission to make changes, and that's going to happen. Probably even rename some of the settings as I get more into my vibe, but for now we have:
• Winds of Change: The original setting by JonBuck. Patrick Altair is from here. Might not make a lot of changes here.
• Wings and Prayers: This was based on the D&D 3rd edition Greyhawk setting, however, it's long grown beyond. It features Kawheek, Thenyr, Aikine, and Faenya as my characters. The core focus is on the Thorsari and their interactions with the rest of the world.
• Wildtouched: A 'masquerade' Earth, where Wildtouched shapeshifters are beginning to come into public consciousness, as well as other paranormal events. Melody and Richard are my primary characters here. The name is tentative, and this is where some of the more significant changes may happen.
• Three Pantheons: Nathan's home. A modern fantasy where in certain divine "realms", magic works and most technology doesn't. This is probably the setting I'll be changing the most, including a rebrand. Basically anything not already set out explicitly in Nathan's character history is on the table.
• Fur, Fury, Space: Lt. Vershaft's setting. The original vision was "Wing Commander" crossed with "Starfox". There was some emphasis on making sure there wasn't a pay-to-win feature on space combat originally, but I am probably going to switch that up. That said, the original setting was somewhat allegorical and involved characters whose players are no longer present, so the history may see a significant revamp regarding AGATE and where Vershaft goes after school.
• META: Lindsey's core setting, focuses on an earth with Metahumans, and the organization META, which is a blend of SHIELD, Cadmus, and Damage Control, amongst others. Got some development, and I own this setting lock, stock, and barrel, so we'll see where it goes. Have some good ideas.
• Diamonds in the Rough: Lindsey and Keys cyberpunk setting. This is more for funsies between me and him, but the art exists, and the stories too, so we'll see where it goes. Collaborative between me and
lunarkeys
Now this'll all take time, but I'm definitely in more of a "I want to write all this, I can't wait till I get to this part!" mood now. So that way you have an idea what's going on.
So, about that book...
OK, so then I should mention that yeah, I'm super behind on the Three Pantheons book with Nathan. I gave it to a friend and he pointed out some significant issues with it. To explain, the book was originally written based on RP logs that took place in 2007. By the time I did the first draft, it was 2012, and some of the original people involved wanted their characters removed. As I continued fixing, technology advanced further and further (the original plot was set in 2020) and things fell out of date and every time I papered something over, more issues and questions would crop up. And honestly, trying to force the setting to conform took more and more time.
Additionally, there were pacing issues as Nathan's role expanded during the original play and became larger and larger, and trying to fit in other things in the gaps became problematic. And an editor looked at it and gave some advice as well, but some of it I don't feel I want to take. I do not blame them for the thoughts, but for example one bit was to "Think carefully before adding a transgender character" W/R/T politics and sales. Is that good advice for an author looking to get published? Yeah. But it's not great for the story, so.
As such, I've decided to throw out a good portion of what is written, and start over from scratch. I plan to keep a lot of the overall plot beats and some of the characters that I've been given unambiguous permission to use (mostly Dawn), but from there, everything might be adjusted. This times well with my setting revamp so I can present a more consistent overall story and setting. I'm also probably going to split the books more; the original plot I planned to tell will now likely be book 2. The original draft was a bit of a doorstopper at 100K+ words anyways. I understand a lot of people think that it's a bad idea to make a series you don't know can be finished, especially publishers, but I'm not getting published, so I'm doing what I want. :)
I also had some problems with framing. Another bit of advice I got was to abandon the first person perspective, and instead use a journal entry/log/email style, where Nathan is writing notes, or retelling it to, say, his parents. I'm interested in pursuing this and will probably write a few chapters both ways before deciding which to go with, but thoughts are welcome.
Shinies
So FA has a tipping system now. I'm considering turning it on on my account; I didn't want to for a long time, because let's be honest, the majority of the stuff I have uploaded is commissioned art and I don't think I should be taking money for things where I didn't do the work. But as I move more into writing more extensively, there's an argument to be made that I should start letting people decide that for themselves. What do you think?
List of projects and ideas

Cleaning house
Posted 6 months agoAlright, let's change tack.
Last year I decided I should really update my gallery since it's not fully categorized in a way that I feel is useful. However, due to events regarding the uncertain future of FA, I put off working on the project for a bit. While this is my main gallery and will continue to be so (barring me getting my webpage set up), I wasn't in the mood to do a lot of work organizing only for the site to die.
I now have the time and headspace to commit to this project, and am going to be reorganizing the gallery. I'm not planning on removing much at all, if anything, but I need it to be better organized.
My current plan is to make folders for my OCs (at least the major ones), my two fursonas, artists (at least repeat ones), and possibly by theme, format, and universe.
However I would like some help setting it up, at least in terms of suggestions of what you, my viewers, would find useful. I only get 75 folders tops, so I need to be a bit judicious, but let me know what you think would help!
Thanks!

Current events, burning bridges, and doing what's right
Posted 8 months agoSo in 48 hours, Trump has...
• Withdrawn from the Paris Climate Agreement.
• Withdrawn from the World Health Organization
• Outlawed trans people
• Renamed the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali
• Removed the price cap on insulin
• Pardoned his Jan 6 traitors
• Removed price caps on drugs for Medicare and Medicaid.
• Threatened to invade Panama, Greenland, Denmark, and Mexico
• Left 1660 Afghans who helped us against the Taliban to twist in the wind.
• Ordered immediate deportation of anyone he sweeps up, without a hearing.
• Fired the head of the Coast Guard
• Fired the head of the TSA
• Fired everyone on the Aviation Safety Advisory Board
• Gutted the NIH
That's only SOME of the lowlights and we've got 1459 days to go.
My expectations for him after his first term were low, but HOLY FUCK.
Party of small government, my tailfeathers.
Party of law and order, my tailfeathers.
Party of Lincoln, my tailfeathers.
And don't say he's not representing the Republican party. He IS the party. They put him up for president three times, he IS the party and everything it stands for. Anyone who wasn't ok with him is long gone.
"Republicans need to get back to their values.". THESE FUCKING ARE THEIR VALUES. Racism and homophobia are their values. Maybe they didn't used to be, but they are now.
"The courts will stop him". After eight years of kissing his ass, I'd be quite surprised if they find their collective balls now.
Don't ever ask me to break bread with a Trump voter again. You voted to make my life, and my friends lives, harder, less safe, and more unpleasant. You can own it. You don't get to demand that I treat someone with dignity, politeness, and respect, when they won't do the same for me.
They have a right to vote for him. They chose to vote for him. Choices have consequences, and you can't always anticipate all of them.
For too long politics in this country has been a team sport where people think everything goes back to normal after the election. The same way they root for a team in the Super Bowl, but after the game, everything's cool.
"It's just politics" is the same energy as "No hard feelings bro, it's just a game"
But as my rights have been continually eroded and my friends increasingly marginalized and made to fear living in their country of birth, well, it's obvious to me this can't continue.
Maybe it wasn't personal to you when you pulled the lever.
But it was personal to me.
And at my age, time is becoming an increasingly valuable resource. I have none for people who don't respect me and mine.
This isn't revenge, this is self preservation and setting priorities.
I'm done being nice to people who stab me.
They are not welcome in my life. Hate has no home here.
"Historians have a word for Germans who joined the Nazi party, not because they hated Jews, but out of a hope for restored patriotism, or a sense of economic anxiety, or a hope to preserve their religious values, or dislike of their opponents, or raw political opportunism, or convenience, or ignorance, or greed.
That word is "Nazi." Nobody cares about their motives anymore.
They joined what they joined. They lent their support and their moral approval. And, in so doing, they bound themselves to everything that came after. Who cares any more what particular knot they used in the binding?"

Cutting Room Floor
Posted 2 years agoI'm going to be debuting a new feature soon. "Cutting Room Floor" will showcase various pieces I abandoned partway through for whatever reason. They'll probably never be finished, but I'm happy with what I did in some of them, so you get to see them as content as I keep sorting out the 3P book. They'll only be posted here, on Furaffinity, as the other sites I frequent aren't able to host the PDFs, and lets be honest, most of my views come from here anyways. So look for that to debut this weekend hopefully. Hope you all enjoy the inner look!
Three Pantheons - Statement of Intent
Posted 2 years agoI've decided I'm going to release the Three Pantheons book this year, warts and all, after one more typography pass.
I've been working on it for more than a decade, and somewhere along the way I stopped improving so much as moving things around to adjust to things as I myself, and the real world around me, changed. In other words, I'd fallen into the same trap of so many directors and designers of chasing a moving target without realizing it. I've decided that at some point I needed to finish it, just stick it in the can, and call it done and move onto newer projects which this is keeping me from. This is that point.
Three Pantheons was originally an RP campaign played online between a group of people. As such, I do not own all the characters and this was a big part of shifting things around. There are plot holes that made sense in the context of what we were doing, but don't convert to the novel well, and a significant amount of my time was trying to move all the pieces around to remove the holes or hide them, without damaging the core narrative. I've come to the realization this simply isn't possible, so what stands now will be the more or less final version.
Since I don't own all the characters, I did get permission to novel-ize it in this way, but I've decided not to monetize in any way since I don't feel bringing money into it would be good.
Lest you fear you're only getting rehashed RP, I have added significantly to the narrative in some areas, which may be visible, to make it more focused on Nathan as a central character. Approximately 50% of the material is 'new'. Additionally, I've tried to in most cases leave quotes from other players alone, as it feels more authentic to me that way.
I've gotten a few beta readers and may consider putting out a call for a few more, but this should be considered my intent to start releasing chapters in full by Anthrocon in June. I'll probably do a final compiled version once I'm done.
I've got enough logs and notes I could write another 3-4 books but right now I'm only committing to THIS book. Whether I do any sequels in this setting will remain to be seen; I simply don't know what the future holds regarding my interest, though if there's enough outside call, I might be able to do at least the second one.
Anyways, that's all, I just wanted to let you know to be on the lookout for this later in the year. Thanks.

AMA Interest
Posted 3 years agoTHinking about doing AMAs of my various OCs, maybe, say, 1 per week. Anyone have any interest in this at all?

Nathan Scott Renfrew, Realwalker in Three Pantheons setting
Richard Peter Gallian, hawk wildtouched and EMT, hailing from Augusta Falls, Maine
Lindsey Kelsey Stelzer, trainee metahuman with interests in space and animal welfare, Rochester MN, META earth.
Melody Nicole Shebesta, multiproficient artist and great horned owl wildtouched, hails from Rochester, MN.
Arrow Quincy Vershaft, systems officer on independent hirable combat vessel The Cause, mod-buteo, hails from Unified Cobia on Terra Buteo

Three Pantheons novel(SOLVED)
Posted 4 years agoI'm kinda at a crossroads with this. Wanted to see what people thought.
See, I've been working on it for nearly 10 years, and I still don't feel comfortable with where it is. If I want to get to story 2, 3, 4, etc. I need to put it in the can eventually. I once had thoughts of trying to (self-)publish the book, but I'm beginning to think I should just finish the current draft, and put it on FA for enjoyment. I don't really need the money, and I'd rather it be read and those that enjoyed it to tip me.
So as I see it, I have a few options here.
1: Free publish on FA, a website, or similar.
2: Selfpublish on Amazon or such.
3: Submit for professional publication, and see what happens.
Honestly, I'm only thinking between one and two right now but if anyone can present a convincing argument for three, I'd love to hear it. What do you guys think I should do?

Personal projects
Posted 4 years agoFigured I should put this somewhere so I don't forget anything.
Three Pantheons: The Novel, draft 3, hopefully final.
This needs a lot of work but I'm hoping I'm on the back nine this time, and should have something good by the end of next year at the rate I'm going.
I'm also working on a sequel novel intermittently as my attention goes that way.
Spread My Wings
A setup of Vershaft's history and personal information. Military School focused story for him.
The Grave Shift
Emergency Responder focused mass TF scenario.
Unnamed mecha story.
Kawheek as mecha pilot.
Four on the floor
Centaur focused gift story.
Unnamed Eagle TF Commission
For someone.
Alluded to Bird Anthro Considerations Story
No title yet, and still deciding how I want to proceed exactly.
Planetarium Date:
Keys and Lindsey go on a date!
Thorsari myths and legends
Vershaft on Ring Seven
Vershaft, out of the AGATE program, makes a friend!
Thenyr meets a "Karen".
Found notes about THorsari
Expanding the META setting
Natau TF story. Nathan ends up assimilated into a new world!
Camping Trip A group of WIldtouched go camping!
Random bad endings or quick TFs.
Thenyr vs the Yeerks
Anything you guys are dying to see? Let me know. In order to aid this, I'll post a character/world reference sometime in the next few weeks, once I clean it up.

YOUR ADVENTURE ENDS HERE
Posted 7 years agoSince I feel like writing Bad Endings featuring my characters, if people REALLY want a story to any particular pic in my FA gallery, let me know! I'll see what I can do.
For context, a bad ending is a situation that would generally be a "Game over" in a video game. Getting killed, TFed into something that can't continue the quest, whatever. I know some people want stories with my pics, so this is your chance to suggest.

NaNoWriMo 2017 idea!
Posted 8 years agoWhat would you guys think of making my writing documents for NaNo public on GDocs, essentially so that I couldn't cheat, and that I had a 'drive' behind me? I find it a lot more motivating for people to be looking over my shoulder, metaphorically.
Random art idea.
Posted 8 years agoHad a bit of an idea for an art piece sometime soon. Idea: Richard(or one of my other chars) getting yelled at by religious fundies for their 'crimes'. Rich for shifting, Nathan for being with the realms, Thenyr for being a pagan, etc.
Just getting it down here before I forget.

NaNoWriMo 2017
Posted 8 years agoStrongly considering between two stories this year. One is a restart of "Spread My Wings", detailing some of the history of one of my OCs, and the other is "The Grave Shift", a first-responder focused mass TF scenario piece. Any opinions on these? Or anything else you guys might be interested in seeing, either in these pieces or in something else?
Where else to find me.
