Plan on getting my act together soon. Sorry for the absence and general mopiness.

Good night, dear heart.
Posted 15 years agoDakota passed away today. I cannot find the right words to type or anyway to get across how I feel, so I'll leave it at that.
Dakota
Posted 16 years agoI haven't been around as of late as depression tends to make me reclusive.
A lot has happened over the past few months concerning my dog Dakota. After his radiation therapies this last summer he had been doing well for a number of months, as frisky as a puppy and more active than he'd been in the past year. In late November he began to slow down and our worst fears were confirmed when the vet told us his cancer had grown back. A CT (or whatever) revealed the cancer spread to the bone along his upper jaw on the left side. By the grace of god, the cancer spread out, toward the nose, rather than in toward the brain, but ultimately it is of little consolation.
In December, after many vet visits and medications he developed bloat and amazingly survived it for several days before the vets discovered it. He had bloat surgery and had the regrown tumor removed, as well as some teeth under pressure from the tumor.
After or around Christmas he developed a new tumor on his upper left jaw, growing outward. It didn't seem to hurt him much, although he couldn't eat hard food, and it eventually started to bleed. The tumor was aggressive, it grew from nothing to the size of a small tennis ball in the space of a week The vet arranged to remove it and give him a three once-a-week radiation sessions.
He's currently on week 2 and has been doing fairly well. We were given some anti-bleeding medication which he has been doing well on, although he's starting to bleed again. On the bright side, the tumor doesn't appear to be growing back (as fast, at least) since he got it removed a week and a half ago.
Unfortunately, the vets seem to agree that any procedures they do are only stalling tactics and that his time with us is short. I try not to think about it, since he seems OK and happy and dwelling on the bad isn't going to make it any better. I just can't help but think sometimes, when I see him lounging about the house, perking up his ears when he hears a word he likes, or spontaneously rolling over onto his back when he wants his tummy rubbed, that one day he's not going to be there. He's been my baby for so long, I just can't fathom him being gone, much less wrenched away so cruelly and painfully. He is so sweet and so loving and so loyal. Everyone who's ever met him loves him, even people who hate dogs. He just doesn't deserve this.

Furry Meme
Posted 16 years agoThis has been going around. I figured I'd fill it out because I felt like pontificating on something that wasn't for class for once :D
Are you a furry?
Relatively speaking, yes
If you have a spouse/SO- is he/she a furry too?
N/A
How long have you been in the community?
I suppose I've been technically in the fandom since...oh, 2000? But I've only been here since 2006. I'm not much of an active community-type person, so I'm unsure if any of that counts.
How did you find furry?
I've been into anthropomorphic or funny animals since the dawn of time, since...well, that's what cartoons were. And animals were always so much more interesting than people :D But if you mean the fandom proper, well, someone in an old AOL chatroom linked me to a Sonic website (I want to say TeamARtail but my memory isn't good enough to recall) and I was like "Oo, people who like and draw stuff like me" and then I learned that sometimes sonic artists did these things called "giftart" and I had to get me a slice of that pie. I've since matured and feel guilty for having been such an art whore :(
What's your reason for furry (what interested you to get into the community)?
Honestly? Even when I was a kid I never thought about ever -wanting- to be in a group. Rather, I like to talk with people who have similar interests as me and have always joined forums and chat groups in order to do so. My stay can be for a day, a week, or even years but I never consciously strive to be in a fandom. That's basically what happened here - I was involved in the furry fandom for a time, drifted in and out at varying degrees, but ultimately never left. I suspect that's because furry is such a broad term that covers a whole theme or idea, rather than a singular subject, so it's much more enduring. My interests are always my interests and cartoons have always been close to my heart.
What's furry to you?
It's what you make of it. Everyone deserves to be happy, and if that's accomplished by believing they are an animal spiritually, then more power to them. Furry, for me personally, is much more of an interest, almost by default. I like animals, I love cartoons, I like anthropomorphizing animals, I love art. And furry communities are generally where that stuff is. It doesn't define me and it doesn't affect my life beyond some of my online activity. As I said, I never strive to be in a group, I'm unable to define myself in terms of communities and whatnot. But that's just me, see, and the folks who find it much more important are just as valid in their belief as I am. Everyone deserves to be happy.
So, short answer: 'furry' is something personal to the individual, there's no way for me to define it.
If someone found out you're a furry and asked you about it how would you respond?
If you don't know already, I'm the longwinded sort who just plain loves to lecturelecturelecture, so I really jump at any chance to explain anything to anyone. I'm a debater by nature, so I'll engage and explain and hopefully make the individual understand my point of view. I welcome questions of all kinds so it wouldn't bother me at all. What do I care what people think of me?
What's your favorite aspect of the community?
The art and the people. Drama queens? Certainly! But in general the people I've met via the furry fandom have been really genuine and honest people, whatever that implies, and if there's one thing I respect its honesty and a desire to be true to yourself. Everyone seems to be finding themselves or working through things, or have done so in the past, and most people seem to understand that. They generally seem to accept people for who they are, there's nothing I admire more than that.
There is just such warmth in this community that I really admire.
That isn't to say everyone is, but this is what I've observed in general. I like to emphasize the good over the bad anyhow.
Do you use any furry terms (i.e. yiff, paws, murr)?
Sort of, but generally not in any personal way. I always use 'yiff' when describing furry sex to differentiate it from other forms of cybering etc. It's simply a more specific term that everyone knows what it means. Other than that, only in reference really or perhaps in jest. I'm not really the sort of people to use non-technical terminology, anyway, so you can't really go by me.
What do you wish furry was NOT associate with?
It would be nice if everyone realized that the furry fandom is comprised of human beings who, by our very nature, are vastly different from one another. The only common point here is the interest in animals/cartoons/anthropomorphs. That's it. It would be nice if people just understood that not everyone is the same so you cannot make blanket judgments about a large group of diverse people. Would be nice, but then so would many things, doesn't make it realistic.
But hypothetically speaking, I'd like to not be associated with any group who has or implies non-consensual sex - that's things like bestiality and sexual cub art. Babyfurs who are exclusively adults acting like children? Doesn't bother me, because its consensual and really doesn't harm anyone. Hurting or infringing of the rights of others is the only thing that really bothers me. Everything else is just shit that ain't my business.
How strongly do you feel about someone bashing the community as a whole?
I really don't care what other people think of me and, by extension, any group I happen to be a part of. Now, if we're discussing it I will likely rant but it doesn't upset me particularly. I'm just like to rant and always strive to prove my point in a conversation :)
How strongly do you feel about someone bashing you yourself for your interest based on the media's aspect on what furry is?
I really don't care what other people think of me.
We all know furry has a lot of sexual aspects in this fandom. What's your opinion on it?
Humans are sexual. We will always be sexual and sexuality will always mean different things to different people. Who are we to judge another's quirks because it doesn't work for us? If its harmless, its fine by me, its their life not mine. And again, everyone deserves to be happy. Further...people cannot choose their fetishes, its a psychological development. If somebody's fetish is ruining their life, I hope that they seek treatment, but if they can function and it makes them happy...what's wrong with that? Why does anyone care what other people like sexually? I boggles my mind.
Personal
What is your fursona(s)?
Artemis. Artemis is a panthar, which was originally just my 11 year old self trying to be clever but has been retrofitted as its own species. Blahblah, uninteresting stuff
Do you have any fetishes to pertain to the fandom?
I'm pretty much asexual, I don't have much of an interest in sex to begin with and so I don't really have the opportunity to have qualifiers on it. However, the non-psychological definition of a fetish is an intense interest in or a fixation on an object or a concept, which I certainly do have. Gore, horror, vore, that sort of thing could be considered my fetish.
If you could magically morph into your fursona would you?
Yes.
Do you believe you have a spirit animal?
I do not personally believe in spirit animals, no.
What other fanbases/groups are you a part of?
Horror, Sci-fi, Batman (or DC comics, if you want a broader term), gamers...I dunno, I really don't actively belong to any group, I just sort of like things...
Anthro/Feral, Therian, or Kemonomimi (Not a furry, just an animal with ears and a tail)?
Anthro/Feral
Are you a fursuiter? If yes, how many do you own? If no, do you plan on being a suiter?
No, but I actually do think it would be spiffy to have a fursuit at some point. I dunno, I like to dress up in costumes and stuff but I prefer then people can't see my face. I don't know why.
Besides...they're just so cute.
How many of your friends are furry?
I dunno, like half?
How many pets do you own, if any?
I have a German Shepherd Dog named Dakota :)
Aside from furry what other interest do you have?
Drawing, writing, movies (I fucking love movies), psychology, debating, showing off how goddamn smart I am ;D
Are you confident enough in yourself to say you're a fur, no matter what the media says?
Well, yes, but I generally don't like labels and thus stay away from them. Besides, I don't feel I'm active enough in the community to take the title of "furry". It seems disrespectful to the people to whom it means something. But if someone called me a furry I wouldn't have a problem with it. It's all relative, really.
Meetups
Do you attend any cons? If no, would you attend any cons? If yes, which cons have you been to?
No, but I do think it would be neat to go to one once. Though, see, I'm not the particularly social sort and since its primarily socializing I don't think I'd be too comfortable. Now, if I went with a friend and had a fursuit ('cause I'm shy ;) ) I might be more sociable, but for now I think I'd have a panic attack or something.
Do you go to local meetups(bowling, public outings...etc)?
I haven't, but like cons I do think it'd be fun. I'm just too shy and anxious to ever do it. Not a people person, this one.
Have you ever attended a furry party? If no, would you attend one?
No. What is a furry party?
Online
Have you ever met up with a fur you talked to online?
Yes
What furry websites do you attend?
FurAffinity. That's it. Really, I didn't know there were many more than that...
What non furry websites do you frequent?
LiveJournal, DeviantART, and Facebook. And then random forums or sites I'm interested in in any given month. But those ones are fairly consistent...sometimes.
Has the fandom done anything for you that you're thankful for? Has it taught you anything or brought you anything you treasure greatly?
Really awesome friends.

What makes you happy?
Posted 16 years agoMy psychopathology class posed an interesting set of questions, all revolving around the concept of happiness. It's funny, because the question often floats about my brainspace so I reckon this is an excellent opportunity to ask you folks what you think. I would love to hear what you think but you are obviously under no obligation to answer all or any of the questions :)
1) What makes people happy?
2) What am I doing to nurture my own happiness?
3) What can I do, or we as a culture do, to help people be happy?

More Dakota Stuff
Posted 16 years agoDakota is doing OK. He had his last radiation therapy on Wednesday, which is good on everyone - no more getting up at 4AM for us, no more staying with the neglectful incompetents at the emergency vet for him. His tumor has stayed away, so far, but unfortunately since radiation therapy uses...radiation, the rest of his mouth is covered in radiation burns. Which no doubt hurt a lot. His lip is swollen and scabbed and occasionally bleeds so he's been reluctant to open his mouth to eat and such. Fortunately this time its a side effect from treatment and -will- go away whereas before it was from that massive, throat-eclipsing tumor.
He's also been oozing a green mucus that I half-jokingly refer to as radioactive goo. It doesn't appear to hurt him much, its just gross.
I know he's supposed to have a check-up X-ray in a few weeks, which I'm dubious of. The vet is a little shady and over the course of the month and so he had his therapy they kept randomly tacking on charges or insisting on tests that were hard enough for them to justify. I just don't know :\
So yeah, Dakota is doing pretty well so far, just recuperating from the radiation.

Emo Bullshit
Posted 16 years agoI'm tired of being depressed all the time, I'm tired of being anxious, I'm tired of all the tension, I'm tired of thinking people like me when they don't and I don't like how that makes me suspicious of anyone who expresses any sort of kindness towards me, I'm tired of seeing people hurt the people I love but not being allowed (or able to do something), I'm tired of having so many thoughts in my head at once that I can't properly follow any of them, I'm tired of having to put up with abject rudeness, I'm tired of being one of the only people who take responsibility seriously, I'm tired of being ignored when I talk, I'm tired of not being able to focus, I'm tired of not being able to draw for any significant length of time, I'm tired of feeling like nobody really wants me around
I used to be able to produce art every day. EVERY DAY! Now I'm lucky if I can produce something worth half a damn every 6 months. And there's a reason why this is, I can feel it. I can't focus and it hurts (but not in a painful way) and I WANT to draw again, even once a month would be better than what I have now. I just want to be happy again, for more than a few cumulative hours a week. If I'm happy, I can draw, if I have little stress and anxiety I can function OK. My life is all anxiety and I just get so tired of it.
Part of me thinks this is best kept to myself, which is why I rarely talk about it. But the other part of me (the psychologist part?) thinks that I need to be more vocal about it so people know whats going on with me and know why I do the things I do. And so the people who can help know that they're needed. Granted, none of those people read this (which might be why I'm writing this), but I can only do a little bit at a time.
Sorry.

More Dakota News
Posted 16 years agoIt's been a hectic week...well, month, really. I have more news to deliver. I hesitate to say, since its bitten me in the ass before, but it seems that we have some good news.
So last week Dakota had his CT Scan and the vet sent his biopsy to run some stains to see which Spindle Cell Sarcoma it is. A few days after that the Oncologist called to say that she and the Radiologist reviewed Dakota's CT and found no evidence that the cancer had spread to any of his organs (yet, anyway) nor any at his surgery site. A few days later we took him in for a check up and to find that the stains came back as.
Apparently they had run two tests checking the tumor for Malignant Melanoma, as it is the most deadly of the possible cancers and Dakota had a very high risk rate being an older, large breed, black dog with dark mouth pigmentation, not to mention that Melanoma is the most common mouth cancer in dogs. Both tests came back negative for Malignant Melanoma so the doctor is 90-95% sure he does NOT have Malignant Melanoma but instead has the much less deadly Fibrosarcoma.
I'm unsure if I went into detail before, but I will now just to emphasize how preferable Fibrosarcoma is to Malignant Melanoma. Malignant Melanoma is generally aggressive and very quickly, and usually, metastasizes to the other organs, specifically the lungs or lymph nodes. Because of this it has a guarded to poor prognosis and a general survival rate of 6 months.
Fibrosarcoma, on the other hand, has a lower rate to metastasize (approximately 20% compared to Melanoma's 80%) but is more locally aggressive (meaning the tumor is more likely to grow back). Its survival time is better than Melanoma, as well, and has a guarded prognosis due to its locally aggressive nature.
So, Fibrosarcoma isn't great, but its better than Malignant Melanoma. Given that Dakota has been pretty lucky as far as progression, I think he has a good chance to recover. The vet wants to start him on radiation next week, which he thinks will probably completely eliminate the cancerous cells.
So starting Wednesday, Dakota is supposed to be going in for 12 radiation treatments - 3 days a week for 4 weeks. Each treatment requires him to stay their overnight and be picked up the next morning, which breaks my heart (but probably breaks his more :C). The vet says that after that's all done we should have significant proof that he's better within a year.
So, here's hoping for the best :) Again, thanks for all the kind words and help and all that. I know I've been slow with my obligations, I kind of can't focus when under stress :\ but now that things are looking up, I should be better.
Still raising money for the radiation and whatnot: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/794301/

More Updates
Posted 16 years agoHey. We went to the oncologist for Dakota today after being referred by his vet yesterday. The oncologist was wanted to check his body via a CT Scan, check his lymph nodes to see if the cancer spread there, and get a stain of his biopsy to check and see if its Fibrosarcoma or Malignant Melanoma. Unfortunately, the oncologist also suspects that its Malignant Melanoma given Dakota's pigmentation. Malignant Melanoma has a much worse prognosis than Fibrosarcoma.
With significant help from my sister, we were able to line him up for these tests today. Well, tomorrow. They're keeping him overnight and we won't see Dakota until tomorrow afternoon :(
So, yeah, any good thoughts you have to spare would be much appreciated. Y'know, just in case.
Also - Thank you guys so much for your kind words, general support, and commissions (which are still open: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/794301/). It really means a lot to me. I apologize for being so slow at the moment, the stress and anxiety of all this kind of kicked me in the metaphysical nards and I've been trying to recover enough to give you guys art of the quality you deserve. I'm just moving a wee bit slower these days. Thank you so much for your patience :)

Biopsy (Dakota)
Posted 16 years agoSo we got the biopsy back for Dakota. Apparently its cancer.
The doctors say its either Spindle Cell Sarcoma, Fibrosarcoma, or Malignant Melonoma. All three are big bads, have poor a prognosis (afflicted dog's generally only survive a year after surgery), and are resistant to chemo.
I don't know how things could go from being so good to being so horrific.
I don't intend to give up, however. I'm now raising money for his treatment/chemo/whatever. If you can spare some, please purchase a commission: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/794301/

Dakota Updates
Posted 16 years agoBefore I begin my tale (since I have a tendency to be long-winded), I should inform you that this is good news!
As you may already know, yesterday we took Dakota (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a...../000_00782.jpg) in for surgery. Because apparently all the vets around here are putzes, we brought him to the vet he had as a puppy which is about 1 1/2 drive away. They were really nice and squeezed us in first thing in the morning (9AM). The doctor examined Dakota and, like everyone else, thought the the tumor looked very nasty and did need to be removed right off. He was worried that the tumor may've grown up and invaded the bone (which would be very very bad) and he wasn't certain he could get the whole thing out, but he was going to try. They also arranged to do dental cleaning while he was under as well as some x-rays and blood work. So we were told to leave him there until 5PM for his surgery.
About 10 minutes after we left they called to tell us that they found two lumps on his chest that worried them so they wanted to do a chest X-ray to see if he could handle anesthesia and to see if he had cancer that had spread to his organs. This was absurdly distressing, as you can imagine, and of course we let them x-ray. A few hours later they called back to say he could handle anesthesia, but that he had specks on his lungs that looked suspicious. The doctor said he'd like to have someone look at the x-rays to determine what they are and, if it was cancer, they were small enough that chemo might help. But for now the doctor was going to remove his mouth tumor. Some odd hours after that we got a call saying Dakota was in surgery that was going well so far and that we could pick him up at 5PM.
5 rolls around and we nervously waited at the vet to talk to the doctor. Once he was free, he had us look at the x-rays. Dakota's mouth tumor had not invaded the bone and we was able to remove almost all of it (the parts he couldn't were because it was in an odd area making it hard to operate on). He showed us some pictures of similar tumors (euplids) and said that Dakota was very very lucky, as the tumors often grow over the dog's teeth which would then require partial removal of the jaw. Dakota's tumor grew out before growing larger so it missed his bones and teeth. His blood work was good and showed negative for cancer. In light of the tumor being less severe than it looked and the blood work being good, the doctor suspected that the specks he saw in the x-rays may've been nothing serious (possible just small blood vessels), although he still recommended sending it to a radiologist for evaluation. And, really, $100 is a small price to pay for piece of mind (and if it is cancer, we'd know right off and have the best chance to get rid of it).
We were able to take Dakota home after that, he was zonked out on pain meds but otherwise he was good. Today its like he never even had surgery or a tumor and he's back to his old self :)
So yesterday went to being the most stressful day with bad news after bad news and then did a complete 180 and became a great day with the best news we could get. Its very likely Dakota will be perfectly fine :) I'm just so happy.
Thank you thank you thank you! This wouldn't have been at all possible without your generous donations/purchases. A lot of the decisions that were made were done on the reliance on the money I would be receiving from commissions and such. Without you guys, we couldn't have gotten this done as soon as we did, and time could well have been very important. There's absolutely no way for me to thank you as much as you deserve.
(P.S. Again, I could still use some money to pay back the loans and send his x-rays to the radiologist. So if you're still interested: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/794301/ )

It would be helpful if you provide me with as much information as possible regarding what you want. However, I'm more than willing to work with you :)
What I'll Draw
Pretty much anything you want. I should mention that my specialty is cartoony designs, animals or anthros, monsters, and horror/gore.
When Will It Be Done?
I will be honest, I work rather slow. Additionally, I often times do have a couple of commissions at a time that I work on simultaneously. Ultimately, it really depends on how complex what you want is and my workload at the time. :) but don't worry, I do get things done eventually and I never half-ass anything (if I feel my skills have improved prior to completing a commission, I often completely redo the work to give my clients what they deserve).
Payment
Payment is via PayPal. My PayPal is: artemispanthar[at]hotmail.com
Payment is preferred at the halfway mark, typically around the inking stage. However, we can discuss payment on an individual basis.

If you wish to post this in your journal, it's been requested that you title it I'm afraid of __ out of 75 common fears.
If you get more than 30, I strongly recommend some counseling.
If you get more than 20, you’re paranoid.
If you get 10-20, you are normal.
{{{If you get 10 or less, you're fearless.}}}
People who don’t have any are liars.

If you wish to post this in your journal, it's been requested that you title it I'm afraid of __ out of 75 common fears.
If you get more than 30, I strongly recommend some counseling.
If you get more than 20, you’re paranoid.
If you get 10-20, you are normal.
{{{If you get 10 or less, you're fearless.}}}
People who don’t have any are liars.

'cause he's a friend of mine, doesn't have an FA of his own (that I know of), and I'm sure some people here may be interested, I thought I'd throw an advert on here.

Meme

wolfguy's meme, so the law of the jungle states I must do this too
The first ten people who reply to this journal get featured here, along with three of my favourite pieces by them.
The catch is: you have to put this in your journal as well.
(Psssst,
TtotheAFFY is offering commissions. Go get one before they're closed!)
