Metroid Other M (Spoiler FREE Review)
General | Posted 15 years agoRecently we were introduced to the glory of a Metroid Game, gifted and made by the wonderful Team Ninja (most notable claim to fame is the Ninja Gaiden Series that we've all come to love and hate at the same time)), and after Playing through it's entirety, and grabbing the glorious 100% of all items collected I have to honestly say taht I am impressed.
As I promised this review will contain absolutely ZERO spoilers, so for those of you who may be wary fear not, I wont be covering what's IN the game, moreso the dynamics and my personal inputs on the game as a whole. So without Further Adieu here's my opinion
1. Control: For those of you DIE HARD Metroid fanboys and girls out there, this is a new twist on the 2d aspect that we've come to adore from teh metroid series. While the camera is fixed at angles and dynamic viewpoints, combat and moving through the worlds are actually brought that much more into your perception. firefight after firefight I threw my power beam into the fray and never once did I ever have a hard time seeing where I was shooting, where I was going, things like that. Samus is restricted to more of a linear path no matter where the camera isfor a good portion of the game, but with the 3d aspects you really get a feel for just how big the rooms, and areas you're running through. Even when the camera switched and I was given free reign on all axis to move about, it only furthered the feeling of the size difference between each room and samus herself.
As Per Team Ninja, and they're talent for making good times almost impossible, this is actually counterbalanced by a new dodging system, which I'll tell you this much, Saved my ass many MANY times throughout the length of the game itself. Dodging is all about timing, there are times where an enemy will attack with a beam or if it's a skree or some-kind throw their bodies at you, and with precise timing you can jump out of the way and lay down serious hurt. I found this new idea to be refreshing in it's simplicity, no more will you have to wait to get the screw attack to be able to jump through enemies and save that precious energy in your tanks, but you get to do this right off the bat thankfully, and trust me, you'll need it for half of the stuff you're going to run into.
I'll be honest, it took me roughly an hour and a half or so to get used to the new control system and layout, I know a lot of you have read the PROFESSIONAL reviews about how much a pain in the ass having to switch the wiimote from horizontal to vertical for aiming missiles and the like. that was actually the hardest thing, is finding the time while in a firefight to swap the 'mote and lay down the real firepower. If you think about it though, it would take Samus time to load up a missile before actually being able to fire it out of the arm cannon. so the timing to switch the 'mote around and lock on I think is actualyl more real than ever before, while it can be annoying at times, it also adds that degree of urgency and challenge, something that you have really only experienced at the end of Metroid games when you're trying to get off the: planet, space station, etc, etc.
All in all, the redesign of the controls is just enough that you get the nostalgic feel of classic 2d Metroid, with a couple of new twists added, and those new twists not only become vital and critical, but add to the overall feel of the game. even with the potential drawbacks in the actual WII hardware I still give the control system an 8/10. it's not perfect, but you're a human being wearing a bloody suit or armor!
2. Gameplay: Most of you will read this far and see that word then click out so you don't ruin the story, in all actuality there's just enough story in the game to give your thumbs a rest and be subtle about it, while still holding true to a classic Metroid game. (and I'm not counting the PRIME series, because while they were fun to a degree, they just weren't metroid in my opinion.) All I'll say about the game content is this, take the best parts from every 2d Metroid game there ever has been, put them together into a single game and that's what you get, OTHER M. Team Ninja did an absolutely flawless job putting this together, and there's enough nostalgia in this to leave you on the edge of your couch screaming at the tv "OH FUCK NO THEY DIDN'T JUST DO THAT!!!" ((i actually said that exact line about 15 times in the game)
To me, the Metroid series hasn't been about story. you've always been the lone wolf bounty hunter exploring all these places with no backup, no one to help, isolated and completely alone (excluding Metroid Fusion) and as i stated above, while the feeling of isolation isn't as daunting as it has been in the past, the story and game focus on the other aspects of Samus, the Urgency and Precision of her gift from the Chozo, the classic Orange and Red Powersuit, (Which looks absolutely PRISTINE i might add) Ever move she makes, whether it's running across a room, using the final strikes or overblasts, or dodging out of the way is finesse to an absolute T, it's very apparent that they at Team Ninja treated Samus with all the love and care that a 24 year old Nintendo Veteran should receive (yes, she really is that old now).
3. Difficulty: JESUS CHRIST THIS GAME WAS HARD. there now that's out of the way lol. Team ninja is known for making Excruciatingly difficult titles, and while they're fun, I can imagine they've cost gamers thousands in new controllers (i speak of Ninja Gaiden Black, and Sigma Black) and this one is no exception to the rule. You remember me saying about how you could dodge in this game? yeah you'll use that ALOT, but god does it help especially when you're running on empty in those E-tanks. Which brings me to my next point. A lot of reviewers have said that they think it's stupid that you hold up the wiimote to replenish you energy and missiles, what they DON'T tell you is that you can only replenish you energy when you're critical, as in under 20en left. then all ti does is replenish a single energy tank. unless you get a specific power-up which I believe there are either 4 or 5 of them total. but even then the time it takes to accomplish this, especially during the fights where you actually do end up needing it, takes a good bit or so to get the recharge, or second wind, leaving you completely open to enemy attacks. And trust me, you don't just go one on one anymore, no you're fighting room-fulls of baddies all at once (there's that dodge thing again)
While it's a steep difficulty curve even on normal mode, it's still a really good challenge, for all of you Super Metroid fans out there this will be a wake-up call. Remember how hard it was the first time you played through it? yeah it's like that, but with a bottle of tobasco up your ass.
I give the difficulty a 9/10 for the sole fact that not every trick you've picked up playing the games over the years works anymore, Samus acts and reacts like a normal person would in her position, and armor takes time to move, while sleek and quick there's still the power-up time that has to be considered. Adds a nice challenge element that you don't see very often, especially since Metroid Fusion (lets face it, Zero mission was pretty much a cakewalk)
4. Overall: Overall Id have to say Other M is a pretty solid 8/10. Samus looks better than ever before, she moves the way a professional bounty hunter trained by the Chozo on planet Zebes all those years ago. for the first time I actually felt like I was playing who she was meant to be. I cant comment so much on graphics cuz I'm kinda reduced on tv's atm, but even on a non LCD in RCA everything still looked DAMN good. Granted when you're watching cut-scenes and such you can tell who they paid most attention to when they were rendering things, but even so it's only a minor frowny face because of just the awesomeness that is Samus, and you really don't see much of the other characters anyway. Just enough story to give you a break form time to time, but not invasive, it's very subtle the way everything all comes together to make the whole thing come alive. and that's really what it does, it may not look like a metroid game at all times, but god does it FEEL like Metroid. And this Pleases me

fun times atthe club tonight. read for a good laugh
General | Posted 15 years agoso tonight I'm just at work, doing what I can with the crappy equipment we have here, when I've been talking my ear off about getting a new Mixing deck (pay attention to that bit there) . so tonight we get a couple guys in that my boss has talked to about equipment and they bring in a Soundboard instead of a deck. the funny thing about this is that yesterday, he brought me in a new mixer, but it wasn't a standalone one so I couldn't link it to the amps. I told him if he wanted me to use it we would need a soundboard so I could link it to the system. so he goes and returns it, then brings in a soundboard tonight. *facepalm*
so to make it even sweeter, I have him on the phone, TRYING to explain the difference between the two, and I get yelled at and told "cant you just make it work?" now in my head I was screaming "Fuck no I cant you lazy bastard!!" yeah with just a soundboard I can plug in an external audio source, if it has the right jack! most soundboards get the mics, speakers, and the heavy duty equipment for power distribution and to reduce the risk of overload. a Mixing DECK is responsible for letting me cut and blend songs like I'm supposed to be doing, hence why it has a crossfader, kill-swithces, bass, treble, gain and everything else I use here.
so I get yelled at for him not knowing a SINGLE thing about audio equipment, but I cant blame him though, what I CAN blame him for though is the fact that I told him exactly what we needed "a standalone Mixing DECK" and he went with the "oh you need a soundboard"
fund times all. fun times.....

UPDATE on everything so far
General | Posted 15 years agoso alot of you are probably wondering, "where the hell is Ash? I've been trying to get a hold of him for weeks and he hasn't really been answering texts either!!!)) well I do have some answers for ya!!!!
well as some of you know I've been preparing for fandomonium (a HUGE anime con here in Idaho, one of the larger ones in the northwest) so not only have I been working at my job, but I've also been putting together a music list on the side for when I was going to DJ for the con last Saturday. So my show went remarkably well, had a bunch of people dancing and raving along with my set, was personally asked by the con chair himself to come back next year, AND to do a Halloween show that the fandom staff were putting together. so not only did I get my foot in the door for professional performances, but I've established myself as a full DJ with this event. Personally for me this is something I've been working on for years, not only to build up the confidence, but also to make sure I knew the basics and fundamentals of DJ'ing before I ever tried to take a shot at the big picture. Some of you who may know me from my early days in Secondlife from Rainbowtiger, pawprintz, AnthroXtacy, and so on (god I've worked for a bunch of places in SL)) and my job in the real world continues to give me practice as a DJ (even though I'm working in a strip club, I still get really good practice and it keeps my skills sharper than if I tried to work around it from a steady 9 to 5 job))
So that's what I've been doing alot for the last month or so, on top of that I've been moving, still here in Boise, just found a new place with kad and friends of ours which is a lot nicer than the place we did have earlier, I have my own workshop now where I can put all my music and electronics without having to worry about getting talked to for my music being too loud :P hehe
So friends and my furry fam, I'm sorry I've been distant and all that, Internet at work is non existent pretty much right now unless one of the dancers brings in their phone and I can leech off of that, at least until I get my new phone. but I haven't been ignoring you, I've just been so freakishly busy I haven't had time for much else besides frantic moving and getting my show setup

my thoughts on the new layout
General | Posted 15 years agoto be honest I actually kinda like it. granted there's going to be a lot of people upset about the change, but I'm finding that having the buttons i need at my fingertips is really kinda useful. granted there's a lot more text and such but in all reality, changing a system that people have been using for years seemingly for the better is gonna raise up doubt and complaints. but then again change is never easy. It's gonna be real interesting to see how this plays out.
Bottom line? I approve of the new layout and look forward to seeing it refined and ironed out in the coming weeks
