MFM 2014
Posted 11 years agoHome now from MFM and it was an absolute... no, can't say blast... it was chill.
Normally at cons I am absolutely bouncing from panel to panel, late late, have to see this thing off to another thing, here there all over can't stop can't stop. (I know people at this one still think I do that but that's me -calm-) MFM 2014 though I took in a different personality to it. I just wanted to go and chill, and mission accomplished. I never felt rushed, I never felt like I shouldn't pause, it was truly a time where I could just talk to people.
Any of you who don't know MFM, it's set up in a hotel that is made 100% for the group they are dedicated to. Small hotel, 4 floors, the second and third floor have ramps up to the mezzanine so basically 3 of the 4 floors are open directly to con space and the fourth floor is the gaming floor so you're always near con things. There are no other guests in the hotel so it's 100% furry. The con has this "Welcome Home" theme and that's really what it's to feel like. You're coming back home and getting to spend time in the craziest family reunion that you can imagine.
It's funny how this con also I've seen the biggest gathering of niche groups inside the fandom but not related to the fandom. Lot of trucker furs, biggest RC gathering I've seen, and the photographers of the old style and not the go pro crew.
Anyone who knows me knows that I was going a bit neurotic before the con, worried about going, worried over a lot of things, this convention though I think is the first time that I've not gotten so busy I can't worry anymore and instead chose to go "lols, don't care" and relax. It truly was a unique experience in that way. Also ended up learning a lot about such that might be in my life, will have to work some more on it, though I'm not the best at introspection.
Ah, but now I'm home, I'm not surrounded by furs, not able to go snuggle and get pet upon. I'm awake and I need to keep busy because I don't want to hit that wall again, but this time, I hope I can do a better job on keeping in contact with those that are so far away, and start preparing early for next year because I so do badly want to be back.
Thank you all at MFM, for giving this hybrid a moment to actually relax and giving me such a nice extended vacation.

Which Hotel are you staying at?
Con Hotel.
How are you traveling?
Airsh- What do you mean it's broken? Zepplin? Blimp?... what do you mean I have to drive across Arkansas? BLAAARGH!
When will you arrive?
Sometime Friday afternoon.
Who are you rooming with?
Local fur who was nice enough to get me last second crash space.
Where will you be?
That's a darn good question. I generally don't know five minutes from any given moment.
How is the best way to find you?
6' something or another with full beard. Most likely going to be doing steampunky stuff again.
Are there any panels you might be attending?
I don't even know what panels are happening.
What do you look like?
6' Brown hair and beard, beard being kept short. Generally in steampunk attire. Don't most of you know me already?
What is your gender?
Male
How old are you?
Old enough to drink (27)
How tall are you?
6' something depending on what gas station I'm leaving.
Can I talk to you?
Better question, can you get me to shut up?
Can I hug and/or snuggle you?
Yes please
Are you nice?
As far as I know.
Are you fursuiting?
I'm exactly one fursuit short of actually having a fursuit.
If I see you, how should I get your attention?
Yell my name. Or "Hey You!" or be the cause of an explosion. Might not want to do the last one but it'd darn well get my attention.
What/where will you be eating?
Where there is food? Haven't thought that far ahead.
When will you be leaving?
Monday.

Posted 11 years agoMy bike is in the shop. Was a problem that it had when we got the bike, but was such a problem that it could be waited out "Until it gets worse." well now it's worse and now it's in the shop. As I go through motorcycle withdrawals, the symptoms might include twitchiness and willingness to for random bouts of violence. This is all perfectly normal and continue as you will. Thank you.
Losing it
Posted 11 years agoI've been told by many I've known that I need help and it's becoming rather abundantly clear how far I've cracked. When at work I can still reel in my emotions and keep them down without lashing out. But at home, I just don't have control anymore. In the past two nights, little minor stuff that I can't fix or should just not worry about has put me to a point where I'm hitting walls/doors in rage.
I hate docs. Been to multiple and between not listening and getting passed from one to another like a game of hot potato I have had no desire to actually deal with them any more. Every doc just wants to throw me on meds within seconds of talking to me, and I try to explain to them that just about every med I've been on I react differently than most the population to I get the response along the lines "Oh you'll be fine." THESE ARE THINGS THAT ARE DESIGNED TO FUCK AROUND IN YOUR HEAD! When the base painkillers after a surgery that has everyone feeling all nice and happy has me at full rage, or absolutely sick, I'm going to be concerned. That isn't to add on to the concern that I get to a point of requiring a pill to act like a human being, I can't help but to wonder at that point from there on out if it isn't just the pill that's me anymore.
The only reason I'm even back to looking at this is the day after I'm told I need to find help by yet another person who knows how I feel about doctors that I need help. I was told something by a friend that... just hacked me off. I tried to ignore and tried to ignore, then when I got home I just started hitting the door to my room until I saw red on the door. At this stage both hands are hurting and I'm frustrated that I picked a job that if I break something I have to hide it because I can't afford to have a broken limb.
I just don't know where to go to get that help. I don't know what to do if that help needs me to take meds that keeps me from doing my work. I'd rather not my family see me having to do that where I was too weak to pull it on my own like my dad did. There are so few that I see daily that knows how my emotions are that if they start changing badly that they'd notice. No most would just attest it to moodyness or something like that.
I just don't know anymore... just this is more or less a moment to vent, plus a warning that I am pretty unstable so that if you can't be dealing with someone who's rapid to anger and frustration, just keep your distance. I don't blame you if you do, most of you have your own shit to deal with without having to fight mine.

Comment on this journal and I will...
1) Tell you something I learned about you by looking at your FA page for 10 seconds.
2) Tell you a color you remind me of.
3) Tell you my first memory of you.
4) Ask you a question.
5) Tell you something I like about you.
6) Tell you the object that is in front of me.
7) Dare you to do this yourself in your own journal.
This journal makes no promises of accuracy and any answers inaccurate may indeed be randomly made up on the spot to be ridiculous. All rights reserved. Do not post two hours after swimming or you may catch fire. This sentence is a lie. All hail the glow cloud.

So just saying hello and I'm not dead yet.

Mostly a last minute decision.

Mostly a last minute decision.
Anyone needing a ride to/from NWA?
Return from TFF
Posted 11 years agoHokay, lets see how much I can put onto this. If I forget anyone here, I'm sorry. Names are my worst ^^;;
So the trip started out on Thursday where I drove down/rode with
foxalbiazul which I haven't seen in quite a while, so was super happy to do such. We arrived in the afternoon and while my roommates flight got pushed -WAY- back, I got to go around and say hi to a bunch of people, wen to the game room to see
stargazer79 then got into playing a big game of Red Dragon Inn with
tobiasamaranth running it that was way too fun. During the game came in my roommate Stratosfear Tully and
XiaoMao and her boyfriend, the second who gave me my new (very long) tail which I love that she made. Somewhere during unpacking process a batch of us took a trip to In-n-out before random parties through the night.
Friday I got up and got myself rolling to get my conbadge from
animecat and made it to opening ceremonies which were fun, Furry Fiesta I feel has the best of them. After a bunch of meet and greets, I got to ride with
Rahata, Havok, and Yavi Fox to search for spirits. This involved a trip where we were in a T-top Trans Am, which as it was put, we had a fox in the back whimpering just from the ride XD was amazing fun. Made it back in time to get dressed up and get to the GOH dinner where I got to eat with Tully,
SableGryphon,
RhubarbTheBear, and meet new friends like
Daggar. He apologized, but I got to laugh as we could see Radio signals kept interrupting Sable and I said I could just see when he got that distant look he just had an "Idle" text pop up over his head. Then the concert that night... OMG, with
foxamoore,
Rhubarbthebear,
Cosmik, AJA among others up playing a concert that truly blew me away. I loved -all- the music but the biggest surprise was them playing one of my favorite songs from Ren Fairs "March of Cambreadth". I got to spend the rest of the night hanging out with friends I've not seen in a while.
Saturday I didn't wake up until late and got to do more hanging out, heading into the dealers den to pick up a few items, including the Fox Amoore End Tide album and an AJA album, as well as the preview of
bucktowntigers new album (Just listened to it... oh wow wonderful my friend). That night I made it too the research conversation where Nuka discussed how his research began and continued about the Furry Fandom which was a frankly fascinating discussion. After this I got to go to
rhubarbthebears and
cosmiks show Hello World which was great fun. I got to sit with
Keefur and
calamity_cougar and after the show got to tag along with the four of them to get some Ghengis Grill. We returned in time to catch the Sublevel 3 concert which was was great. That night I got to party with Rahata, Tully, Havok, Yavi, Cosmik, so many others, and made it down to the end of of the Oklacon party which I saw many more. (And don't ever doubt Rahata and Havok's punch. You will not be sober by any stretch of the imagination the night you drink that o.O)
Sunday I actually managed to crawl out of bed to make it to AJA's concert. That was an amazing one I was so happy to get to. I didn't know he went to Muskogee Ren Fair that I've been going to for years, but now I'm going to have to get to his concerts when I'm there. There was a song about Red Riding Hood that when it ended there was a moment of stunned silence that there was applause, I can't wait until I can get my paws on that song ^^. I slipped in a bit late to the Dealing with Depression panel with Path and gang, and lost track of time with the discussions that was such a good one, I sadly missed the Fox Amoore concert, but don't regret it for what I heard in that panel. Later down I made it to the Dance Competition which is -always- fun, and got a few last second things done before closing ceremonies. I got to see Firr pied in the face as well as Istanbul which is always fun. That night I went to get some sushi with Keefur, Cosmik and Rhubarb again, and spent the night trying to keep up with the con by hanging out with people I knew until dead late at night before I finally crashed.
Sadly Monday didn't get to see anyone out because Albi and I rode out at 7am making way for Arkansas again. We got to have a nice discussion in IHOP then when I got back in the passenger seat I passed out and didn't wake up until nearly home (Fox, you were supposed to wake me up so I could drive some =P).
In short, this con was amazing. The new conspace, we're going to have to learn it. Unlike Circle Con of the old hotel, this one you have to be deliberate where you want to go to meet with people instead of just wandering and landing at things happening. Also felt empty, but that's because this con space is so very -MASSIVE- compared to the old one. As I said in the scritch and bitch, I am so happy that this particular con had so many music concerts and wish they would keep it up.
Some people I need to shoutout that aren't above,
vacurien_bushi_hare DUDE! You're back! It's so happy to see you again! Omg!
spinningpeanut I'm so glad to finally see you in person, your suit is adorable!
Okidoki Seriously, one of the first people I met in the fandom IRL at my first con, was good to see you. I would go on with all the other faces and names, but then it would be a wall of icons (more than it already is), but seriously, I had such a great con and was happy to see everyone, it ended far too short but I hope that I can be at another one soon to see you all again.

Other news: Currently down to a brace on my arm. Waiting for further information from doc about the wrist.

A: Around the 6' mark depending on what convenience store I'm leaving
Q: If I approach you, will you chat with me?
A: Naah, I go to cons to be alone (Non-sarcastic translation: Of course! :) )
Q: If I see you, how should I get your attention?
A: Pouncing, hugging, yelling "HEY YOU!", doing something interesting, handing me a drink....
Q: How many furry conventions have you attended?
A: 9 (2 Wild Nights, 1 Oklacon, 3 MFMs, 1 AC and 2 TFFs)
Q: Do you own a fursuit?
A: Nope, would like to but sadly no.
PERMISSIONS:
Q: Can I hug or snuggle with you?
A: Yup
Q: How can I find you?
A: Steampunk, either that or wearing an SG1 uniform (if I can get the uniform in time)
Q: Can I buy you drinks?
A: Yes please
Q: Can I look in your sketchbook?
A: I'm exactly one sketchbook short of actually having a sketchbook...
Q: Can I take your picture?
A: The better question is why would you want to?
MISCELLANEOUS:
Q: Do you do do free art, trades, commissions, badges?
A: I can do free art. I am the Leonardo DaVinci of stick figures. DaVinci at age 2 maybe.
Q: Do you have a table in the Artist Alley / Dealer's Den or a panel in the Art Show? If so, what are you selling?
A: Talentless hack here. I just loiter and look at other peoples neat stuff.
Q: Do you plan to volunteer?
A: Possibly
Q: What's your goal for the con this year?
A: Does have fun count?
I will be driving in from NWA, if anyone else is needing a trip down I could use the help on the gas. Also if you like to drive and don't drive like a lunatic I would be happy to not have to. I might have one potential other who will have a slot, so send me a note and I will update you ASAP.
Other news: Currently down to a brace on my arm. Waiting for further information from doc about the wrist.
Updates
Posted 11 years agoBeen putting off putting updates here, but I guess I should.
So, Christmas was a thing. So was New Years.
Got my EMT card in, so fully state certified and on the NREMT. Haven't been able to look for work with it though because of my wrist.
Broke wrist did not require surgery but by a very narrow margin. Still in cast. Going back to doc later again this month.
I should be at TFF.
There's a bunch of rage journals for FA, not going to be one here, have enough to be irritable about and FA is not even close to my radar (Bugging me on journal for either side will be on my radar and I do have a short fuse, you have been warned.) But I do have a weasyl, I might actually update it one day. Like I update my page... which is don't hold your breath. A cyanotic complexion doesn't look good.

Further adventures of the tiger mutt
Posted 11 years agoOkay, full on update of the good news bad news variety that is of the bi-polar variety this season (haha, get it, snowpocalypse to 60s in a week okay shut up)
Trouble was caused by the snowpocalypse by pushing finals for EMT class back a solid week with no school. What that meant was while we gained an extra week to study for it we only had a night to practice for our state board practicals that was now the day after our test. All that said I passed my finals, my state board, and the national test so I should just be paperwork finalized away from having my EMT number.
Other news, had a go cart at work malfunction take off at top speed with me on it. Rather than hit the pole at the end of the lane and get thrown I tried to abandon and in the process broke my wrist. I've been told that according to the security video its amazing more didn't happen. Just like the last five breaks it was a right extremity, this one the radial at the joint. Good news and terrifying news is I was sent by the orthopedic clinic to a local hand specialist (dad thought the nearest one was Kentucky, not that common). This means best possible care for the injury, but this also means this break was odd enough an orthopedic wanted me to see a specialist which is terrifying. We're waiting for Workmans Comp, holiday season, etc to get through to get a CT scan to see if I need surgery. He said its a 50/50 chance, but some of the things he said makes me think it was just to be comforting. Oh well, will know after Christmas.
Going to see family this weekend. Seeing less family than usual because of... complications... but *shrugs* is life.
That is all

Snowpocalypse 2013
Posted 12 years agoSo, massive snowstorm decided to roll through. To the point that it hit Thursday and today on the way home most of the roads STILL don't have visible lines through the ice. It's one of the rare times Arkansas actually got real, honest to god snow (Not ice that looks like snow for about 20 seconds, melts and refreezes into the slickest substance known to man. That was the first layer). Dad watched a construction ice scraper that was brought in to clear roads get stuck on the intersection of our house. On the way out I saw one of our VERY few sand trucks/snowplows in the ditch as it attempted the onramp.
I had to work still with the snowpocalypse, it wasn't a big deal, I know how to keep it safe and last night when the roads were at their worst I stayed at my old college roommates apartment for the night because I got out at midnight and had to work today as well. On the way to their apartment I had to "thread the needle" by running the two thin lines of actual pavement that was on the right hand lane, at that time a jeep set up for everything offroad was passing everyone like they were going slow... right until right next to me he went ass end first into the ditch off the road. Watched in rearview him attempt to drive out of ditch so I knew he wasn't hurt. It was kind of nice because everyone else got REALLY off my tail after that.
Also, I want to find the man who wrote "I'm Dreaming of a White Christmas." and kick him.
TLDR: The Day After Tomorrow happened. I hate winter.

Thanksgiving
Posted 12 years agoHope everyone had a good Thanksgiving, I did, and it's.... oddity to most that don't know me makes me want to share it.
Woke up and went with my parents to go eat our traditional Thanksgiving lunch. Today it was the local Pakistani/Indian restaurant. The backstory of this tradition was when my parents lived in Little Rock, they would cook a big meal for all the EMS people they knew, and would feed a lot of people. When they moved up to this corner of the state it was very insular and no one came, so a large meal with only them and I (I wasn't even a year old then) was just so excessive, they had leftovers forever. Same with the next year. So the year after that, they decided to go look for a restaurant that was open. First place found was a Chinese restaurant in Joplin. Ever since then the family tradition was to go find a restaurant of foreign ethnicity (usually a Chinese buffet, but they started getting so Americanized that we couldn't find one open so moved to other ethnicities). Today was odd that we didn't have a buffet because the place didn't have it going for lunch which surprised us, but we had a wonderful meal that had us even getting some to carry out.
After that, we drove home the long way, looking at the lines at stores and generally just derping about. When we got home, dad napped, I gamed, mom read. Finally after that, and some chatting with family later, I went out to see my old college roommate where we sat and watched Big Bang Theory and got Taco Bell for dinner. On the way home I wandered into a few black Friday sales because there was no line to get in the door, snagged a couple things at cheap prices and waited because the lines weren't any longer than they were a normal Friday because I wasn't with the front rush.
Anyone who looks at this would see what looks like a completely normal and average day. And it was very much so. I would SO MUCH rather eat Indian food any day than a ham or turkey with gravy and stuffing. I like to hang out with my friends and I like some time with family and some time being left alone. To me, this is EXACTLY what Thanksgiving is about. Chill, don't panic, do the things you like. Live on.
Granted I was rather annoyed at the day for one thing. My job -could- have had me working and didn't schedule me. I could have done the traditional lunch with the schedule. I like to make up my thanksgivings on days where a lot of things are open and the choices are abound. XD This is the sort of personality you get when you are raised around jobs that don't get holidays.

Metal working furry
Posted 12 years agoSo there's a furry that's making pieces using metal as his medium. This is something to me that is awesome. And he's having a raffle off for a piece. And I hope I get it. =P

Drive.
Posted 12 years agoMost people know I don't like to drive. It's not something I get a kick out of. But when I get out of work at 3am, I find myself wanting to drive, and drive, and drive. It takes a considerable amount of will to not just pick a cardinal direction and keep going until the car cannot go any further. Kind of just looking at running. Getting away. It's a frustrating feeling because I know it won't help anything but it's that run I want to do.
This comes midway through my self-imposed exile from instant messenger programs, only a few days, but I keep wanting to jump to them but I don't feel any different, better or worse. This is frustrating because even bad change would be better than none as it at least tells me something.
Also. Want to sleep, but can't. Tired and should be asleep. Horribly worn out but so twitchy to make me want to keep moving.

Character meme thing

Pick one of your characters. Give this character's name, age, species and a single-sentence description.
My character is Azal, 27 year old Tiger/Wolf/other mutt thing, other being stripe pattern being reversed from most tigers, horns, and extended canines.
Do you use said character for...
Out-of-character chatting?
Oh very much yes.
Fiction you draw/write
If by you mean commissions, yes >_> I don't draw/write
In-character roleplay?
All the time
MMOs or other types of games?
Sometimes, do you know how HARD it is to register a 4 letter name?
Fursuiting?
Would love to... though the motorcycle has been cutting into fursuit money.
Other uses?
Azal was supposed to be a throw-away name that really wouldn't mean much to me. That said he's now my primary/nearly only character and has become my name in the furry fandom. Sometimes I use the character for RPGs as well.
How long has this character existed, including previous versions?
Altogether, Azal has been around since fall 2008.
Does your character physically resemble you in any way?
He's meant to, as he's pretty much me. He's in a bit better shape than me, and has more fur and sharper teeth but yes.
What trait about your character is the most like you?
werf... Um... he's been made to represent me so personality and build are close, as well as the mixed heritage in history (and the not having a clue/caring what the heritage is)
What trait about your character is the least like you?
What do you mean I'm not a 6' something anthropomorphic blend of canine feline?
Does your character have something you've always wanted? Do they do anything you've always wanted to do?
I sword fight... but not anywhere near as well as Azal. He's practiced at it is pretty much it.
Did your character originate in someone else's fictional universe? If so, whose?
No, mainly because he didn't have a story to originate from.
Is your character presently still a part of that universe?
See above.
How did you come up with the qualities of your character?
I wanted a character that represented me. I had trouble coming up with a species so went with hybrid and ever since then stuck with that mindset. Little oddities like the horns are kind of nods to my own oddities in bloodlines. The name was a random name generated name to poke my head on a social group... was supposed to throw away and go to my name I use almost primarily for steampunk. That obviously didn't happen.
Did any historical figures, fictional figures, or people you know/knew influence your character?
No
What physical/mental changes has your character gone through since its creation?
A LOT of mental changes, a lot mirroring my own. He probably didn't represent me so closely at the beginning but now there's not a separation. Some physical changes and mental changes are known by those who have known by me over time. Biggest I would say would going from a very dominant personality to a submissive one.
If your character was a real person you knew, how well do you think you'd get along with them?
Oh I wish I could say we'd be best buds or something like that, but I know better. He's me, I'm him. My personality meets others of the same personality and that's a way for wars to start.
What is your character's biggest vice?
As I said, submissive... want someone over me in control. (Note, this does not mean you can take control... it's given to those trusted, otherwise that's a good way to have a lot of anger directed to you)
What would someone find if they looked through your character's pack (or purse, bundle, backpack, pocket, etc)?
Knife, tools for whatever is being worked on at the time, knife, something that can be used to get in trouble, knife
What is one thing your character will never, ever, EVER do?
Be bouncy and bubbly in personality. Seriously, if you know me, that means -worry-
And lastly, if you had to write an ending for your character and never use them again, what would the ending be like? Happily ever after? Blaze of glory? Fate catching up to them?
Um.... Well seeing as he's me... that'd be difficult. I think if he were to ever stop being a representation of me, he'd go out either quietly with not much story to it. Or a blaze of glory. Or maybe a blaze. Dunno with him yet.

Update
Posted 12 years agoSo past week or so been plague ridden, blah.
But in the news of EMT, I've been keeping up with it. Turns out I'm one of the top of my class, so that's good, better than failing but grade should be so much better. Began my clinicals yesterday with a 12 hour shift at the fire department. I'm apparently a black cloud, we ran nearly every hour while I was there until the end of the shift which it slowed down because a massive white cloud showed up. Now I need to get my hospital time in.
That is all.

Representing your religion.
Posted 12 years agoOkay guys, I will start this off with anyone bashing any of the religion will automatically have their messages taken down. This is a serious statement and I'm not going to allow flaming from any direction on this. That said, I have a feeling I might upset some people enough already.
Okay, just came back form my new job working in an arcade/go-cart place/etc. We had a church group tonight. This church group has continued the pattern that I've seen so many times. That church groups are the single -WORST- group to deal with in food and service jobs. I have worked at Disney, as an usher for a movie theater, as a waiter, and the past bit has been for go carts and tonight... a six year olds birthday party was FAR AND ABOVE better behaved than the church group that rented out the place tonight.
Tonight as the example. In the two hours we had not general public I had 90% of the races have to be stopped because someone wrecked/rammed another car (I could go the whole night with random people coming up and have no problem), have the people be the rudest speaking people, more cursing than I've heard there all week, more backtalk when going over safety and actually nearly got shoved over by a group when I opened the chain to let them in (I'm 250 lbs and over 6' tall, do you REALIZE how hard that is?) and not a single apology or anything when I yelled at them to back off instead they just ran to the carts.
So if you go on outings with your church, whether it's just lunch after services or a big event for your church, I want to ask this. Do you realize that every manager warns their employees for the big events? Do you realize a childs birthday party just an "nnnnngh this is going to be difficult" but a church groups elicits in the back swearing and threats to quit rather than having to work with them?
And I have to ask, is this how you represent your religion?
I get the mentality, it's a mob mentality. It is amazing what a group gathering together feels they can get away with. But the oddity I've found with church groups is the lack of shame included. When I pick someone out -specifically- because they are being unsafe most people get real small and quiet, nope tonight they laugh and did it again. When someone is told to get out because they are being unsafe they use a self-rightous attitude that being religious is why they are better and don't have to listen. And while this didn't happen to me tonight, there is a -SPECIAL- kind of hell for people who leave waiters a prayer card instead a tip, a no tip makes a waiter furious... the tip card is the insult that makes them plot your murder.
So if you are part of these groups, take a look around. Is your group the one that makes every service worker cuss and throw things because they have to be pleasant for you? Is your group one of those that makes life miserable for those who are just trying to make a living? Is your group representative of every negative stereotype that is focused on you? And do you try to stop these things? Or just stay quiet for them? Or actually do them? THESE QUESTIONS ARE NOT ONLY FOR CHURCHES, we have our individual groups in every place too, just the one is global so far.
But while most groups are hobby and amusement, the church is supposed to be a serious statement. It has moral and ethical codes and a pretty serious mission statement. So I ask why is it allowed to have the above view as the representation in the mind of anyone who works the service industry? Why do those want their religion viewed like this? I know at least a couple people who has told me they wants to give me a good example of his beliefs and why is it those are the only ones I have seen who has actively tried, and not just for me, but for the world at large?
Anywho, in other news, steampunk costume went over well for the Halloween costumes at work. I think mine was among the best, but doubt I'll win the contest as it's voting on facebook which I so barely use so I won't have many people voting for me. Oh well, that part was fun. Work again in 8 hours so sleep now.

Repair Days
Posted 12 years agoWell I just made it back from the Metal Museum in Memphis and it was wonderful. My family makes it a yearly pilgrimage that we've only missed two years since I've been born, dad has been going longer than I've been around. It is an incredible event, rather like a con, and yet unlike it at the same time.
Repair Days is the annual fundraiser for the Metal Museum, where we repair anything metal. The tagline is anything but cats, cars, and broken hearts. For this, some of the best metal workers all across the nation gather into one place to put their skills into the jobs. My dad has been sharpening knives every year he has been there and has become known as the guy to bring knives to, as well as teaching others how to sharpen. Even though I have spent years trying to avoid the knife sharpening tent and work in the jewelers tent or the forge, the last couple years I threw in my assistance where I learned how to sharpen knives in scouting. Last year dad took it as specifically he was going to teach me how to sharpen knives... got distracted talking to a customer who brought their knife, and when he was done I handed him the knife that I had just finished sharpening. I then commented he didn't need to act so surprised. XD
I admit, 27 years of going, I have seen a change when the current owner of the museum too charge. Used to dinner on Saturday was just as informal as any of the other meals, as was the auction for the pieces the metal smiths made and after the dinner was done, that's when the forges would be powered back up. Now it seems they're civilizing us a bit with a real nice dinner, and public comes in from the auctions... and the power hammer doesn't come on because naturally that's going to bring curious people. I don't like change and I miss the old days, but it is so good for the museum because the public awareness is what is needed. This is in fact -for- the museum and not just the metal smiths, but the party that goes on after is most definitely ours. It gets a bit interesting when the alcohol is free for the volunteers.
In a weekend, I saw friends I have grown up knowing all my life. Noticed absent faces. This is such a close family of people that someone knows where another is. The level of family is unique to anywhere else I've been, where volunteers trust each other enough I could drop my apron over the bench (they ran out this year) and not worry that it will be gone in the morning. No where else have there been such closeness that you can walk up, ask someone to help with a project and you'll learn a new skill that day. This weekend I learned how to tin copper pots from the last remaining tinner of repair days. (He was happy, going "I upgraded to consultant!")
It was a slow year though this year, but probably because of economy, because it was earlier in the year so other things are happening in Memphis, and really, sometimes there are just slow years. I appreciated a weekend not full of rain and storms so I could look over the beautiful view over the Mississippi River, especially as the sun was setting and lit the whole river gold. All in all, the Metal Museum is probably one of my favorite places in the world, and I know when Repair Days comes around next year I will do everything to be there again.

Weekend of Wonder
Posted 12 years agoYea, I'm late posting this, EMT class has been a bear. What can you do?
This last weekend I was at Weekend of Wonder, a festival for magicians. A local magician in Hot Springs, Maxwell Blade and another magician from Australia had this idea and co-produced something that hasn't been done before. Up until now, modern magic the people had to come to, giant venues in the largest cities, massive auditoriums where only the largest of stage illusions could actually be seen. This Weekend of Wonder was different, with some of the top world class magicians coming to a relatively small town in the midwest of Hot Springs AR, they performed in a small intimate theater where we could see the close up magic and the true skills of sleight of hand. Blade had said he didn't know how it was going to go, he wasn't sure if it would be big enough to do again when he was looking at the pre-sales. Then the weekend came.
I arrived late Friday to catch the All-Stars Gala. This was the big performance that had all the magicians up on the stage: Jeff McBride, a Vegas magician who holds multiple Guinness World Records for his sleight of hand work; Dirk Losander, a German magician who's performance has labeled him the Master of Levitation; Michael Ammar, a close up magic extraordinaire who has won every award one can have in magic; Jay Scott Berry, Australian magician and co-producer for the weekend and had performed the single most beautiful trick I've seen during this show; and Maxwell Blade, in his own theater performed an amazing show and one of my favorite performances with no words said, just moving to the music as one trick after another was shown. At the end of the show all of them came out on stage where pictures were taken, a first time for these magicians to be together in one place for such. After it I had a card which McBride threw into the audience which I took to have all the magicians sign.
During the weekend was an incredible series of shows that followed. Between the big shows with the big names other performers did shows in the street and in restaurants. We caught two in a busy bar doing acts, one running side show magic, the other showing off reptiles and doing small tricks. Nothing quite gets the attention of a bar full of drunks than pulling a rattlesnake out of a box and that only being the third smallest box. Other street performances included one of the magicians who helps Maxwell Blade, a magician from Lithuania, even Jay Scott Berry entertaining a whole pancake house.
And the shows, after the gala on Friday, Saturday the guest magicians each had a solo show to perform. Jeff McBride had everyone rolling with laughter, Michael Ammar had magicians jaws on the floor and scratching their heads on how he did something, and Dirk Losander had the wizard feel down. And after their shows, each of them also had a lecture, which I attended McBrides. The first thing McBride did was show a finale he uses for his card act where I was the one called up to be the one to demonstrate how! While he showed a few tricks and how to do them he also talked heavily about the theory of performance. That night the magicians performed another Gala, and I had a rare opportunity to see McBride before with his solo show and after with the Gala with the lecture in between to see the act and how he put all the elements together.
Sunday was when I caught most of the strolling magicians. As I am out of practice I didn't go to the workshops that the magicians were putting on which were heavy hands on teaching sessions, but my dad did so I was able to get some of the information passed on. But because I was out of those I was able to see many of the local magicians, and catch Jay Scott Berry's solo performance, as well as the Rising Stars of Magic which is the younger magicians showing the up and coming talent. That night the final show was Maxwell Blade, and as it was the end of the festival the other magicians were able to watch. Where I was seated off in the aisle, before the show I got to meet the magician from Lithuania and talk to him and during the show, next to him was Berry, McBride, and Losander.
This was an incredible weekend and an amazing opportunity. I first saw Jeff McBride when I was 9 years old on World's Greatest Magic II, and 18 years later I finally was able to see him live and in my home state even! Each of the magicians were gracious and friendly, speaking to individuals in the public happily and answering questions. I heard Maxwell Blade say before he was worried about the numbers on the presales that it wouldn't go over that well, but during the weekend every show was completely sold out and they said next year they will have it again, and even have a five year plan now! So if anyone can be in Hot Springs AR next year on the weekend of Sept 19, I would highly recommend being there to see the likes of which you haven't seen before. I know I will be there.

Free Plush Raffle + Help a fur get business rolling
Posted 12 years agoJust checked this out and found a fur who has started a Indiegogo campaign to try to get her business running strong. Journal is here. http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5072412/
I think this is a good one because it's promoting a furry business, and at the same time if you don't have the money to donate, spreading the word might find those that do, and she's raffling a free plush to those that spread the word. So check it out ^^

Bikes Blues and BBQ
Posted 12 years agoSo this weekend is BB&BBQ in Fayetteville. A massive biker rally that takes up most of Fayetteville and Northwest Arkansas which is all about bikers, beer, barbque, music... it has reached to be one of the top rallies in the country.
In other words, NWA is going to be filled with slow vehicles on all the good roads with tailpipes breaking every sound violation in a tri-state area, predominantly ridden by people who ride less than a 1000 miles a year and yet get drunk, think they are too cool for safety gear, and get on the biggest vehicle on two wheels. Oh, and every state trooper is moving up here for the weekend too.
Yea... I'm -REALLY- glad I'm getting out of town this weekend. <_<;;
TLDR: Does not play well with others.
