2015 Reflections
Posted 10 years agoWow, I am not too sure how to start this. I guess in rough chronological order would make sense ie. from January to December. This was a most fascinating year and our first full year back on my mother’s home island.
I sold my little business and finalized the sale of the house in Calgary that my brother and I co-owned. We had lived comfortable bachelor lives for over 10 years and that phase had come to an end. We now have wonderful spouses, and in his case, a beautiful daughter as well [I get a cute niece out of this deal, so I can’t complain].
The beginning of the year was spent reigniting my love for comics and illustration. I have to say it was hard, having spent several prior years trying to be an entrepreneur and CEO [the title makes the position sound way more extravagant than it actually is]. I had numbed myself in regards to any personal fulfillment, changing my focus to the pursuit of money and scrounging resources for my little corporation. In hindsight it was a wonderful learning experience, and my only regret was not being able to fully appreciate the friends and opportunities along the way.
Back to reigniting my passion: I find that there was some good spurts of activity this year. A few false starts but I can forgive myself since it has been so long. I finally feel that I’ve been able to tap back into my core skill set, which is both awesome and scary. I have been wrestling with a sense of being ‘left behind’ by my artistic peers, but that has waned dramatically.
Having my parents nearby again is a huge change. I appreciate the fact that I can catch up after a decade of being the prodigal son. Being able to visit them almost every day has allowed me to re-establish a true relationship along with authentic dialogue, which I have been craving.
I have had the honour to work with my friend Mikko on his personal game project, and I hope to make him proud and help him realize his vision. In fact, I have had tonnes of opportunities to hone my pixel art thanks to commissions and I am truly grateful to everyone who has indulged me.
A pivotal figure in my life passed away this year. My grandmother was an incredibly patient and tough woman. She had sacrificed much to allow our family to prosper. Hard as it was, I am glad that I was there to talk to her and witness her passing. To go from chatting with someone, wishing them goodbye one last time, then touching and moving their cold body into a coffin, followed by picking through their ashes and scattering the remains into the ocean, was a heart wrenching experience… but it brought me closer to my family and the culture on the island. I feel that this experience was her last gift to me.
I have also bought house. Right down the street from my parents so that we can keep an eye on each other. I look forward to moving in next year once the construction is complete. My wife has managed to amass a miniature zoo over the year, so I am happy to give them a permanent home.
Finally, this year has also reignited my love for wanting to be doctor. Nothing special, just a GP since that is what I have wanted to be all along. I have realized that maybe it is not too late to resume my studies and finish my medical degree after all. The future is looking spectacular and I hope to achieve many wonderful things in the year to come.
I wish all you wonderful people a Happy New Year and may you all be blessed with love and good fortune! See you in 2016.

Self Reflection
Posted 10 years agoIt has been an interesting year so far. For the prior 5 years I was attempting to be an entrepreneur, business owner, stock trader, or contractor all for the sake of personal freedom and control over my time. I had left a comfortable but mundane job as an art director at a small game company, with big dreams of riches and grandiose projects
I was far from successful. Eeking along, performing and earning just enough to keep up my payments on my bloated credit cards. It was a form of financial self-waterboarding that had me gasping for any available air and relief on a daily basis.
Then I left that all that behind about a year ago. Got married, sold a house I co-owned with my brother, moved back to my mother’s home province in Thailand and started from scratch trying to do just one thing: Become a story teller.
I have to say I am still disoriented with the whole affair. Most of my artist peers and friends have long shot to the stars on their respective pathes, leaving me here on the ground floor still trying to piece together my goals and aspirations. Like a pile of Legos without a plan, I am not too sure what to do first, or last, or anything in between.
I am not complaining. Far from it, I am merely trying to put words to what I am currently experiencing and parsing the information. I know I want to do comics. I know I want to tell stories and entertain folks. I’m just starting to figure out how to deal with myself in that new context.

Round 2: Fight!

A great start it to the month it was: Got back home and settled in, finally started up my Sky Expedition story, and even got some wonderful people to support me along with the endeavour! I look forward to committing more time to the adventure as time goes on and really looking forward to folks enjoying it. I think I will find a happy medium between single image posts with text [to help build up the world and context], mixed with comic style pages in between [to flesh out the characters]. You can read all the current entries and story here:

This is quite an odd moment for me, filled with excitement that is enveloped in a crust of trepidation. Since going freelance 5 years ago, I have been slowly amassing notes and ideas for a project of mine, Sky Expedition. Unfortunately, due to the nature of freelance and needing to bring in contracts, this project has constantly fallen to the wayside and taken a back seat to life's priorities.
No more. I have decided to push this through and start dedicating a significant amount of time to Sky Expedition. Whether it succeeds or not is no longer an issue, what matters is that I get it off my chest. Just to have it finally hatch and to have others see it, will bring me the peace of mind I need. It is like scratching an itch that has been there for oh so long.
At this point, I would like to ask for your help and love:
I have set up a Patreon account that acts as a sort of tip jar for those of you who have a dollar or so to spare. If your funds are tight, worry not, a nod or link to Sky Expedition is greatly appreciated. The project and its images will always be available for free online for everyone to enjoy. This is just a way for you guys to lend a much needed hand and to be part of my journey, if you so wish. Regardless of what you do, I sincerely hope that you will come to love the story. Across the Ocean!
Posted 11 years agoFinally settling down for 2 months back in Calgary. It is hard to believe that I was in Thailand for almost half a year. Waking up in the same room I've lived in for years makes it feel like the whole time across the Pacific was some sort of extended dream. Regardless, I now have the chance to finish packing up and addressing any remaining work/life tasks over here. Going to treat these two months like a business trip wrapped in a vacation, and I think I'm going to enjoy it immensely :3 ~

Posted 11 years agoFinally feeling a lot more settled and at home in my hometown after a good 15 year absence. The island has changed a lot but the are still many things to be appreciated like family and all the great food and new found energy :3

I've been swept up in some pretty time intensive professional work, and no longer have the time to put towards getting pixel avatars completed in a timely fashion. For this reason, I'm not taking any more commissions of this type until my work load eases up.
I have no idea when I'll be available for them again, so they're closed indefinitely. However, I will be sure to post a journal here when they're made available again :D

Commission prices are rising in a week!

Just a heads up that I plan on raising my commission prices starting November 6th on the following items:
Sketches (currently 20$) will rise to 35$
Shading and Lighting commissions (currently 80$) will rise to 90$
Background/full illustration commissions (currently 90$) will rise to 110$
And that's the extent of it! You can see examples of each commission item here!
If you want to purchase a commission before the price rise, you are more than welcome to! Again, prices won't rise until the 6th of November! So you have a week to get in on the current commission prices :]

I've received an overwhelming response! Try as I might, I couldn't even keep up with responses!!
About an hour ago, I started from the very bottom of the comment section of my last journal, and worked my way up to the top, taking care to click on every single link you guys took the time to post! And while it was really (really really really) difficult to pick just one character, I have decided!
I'll be drawing an adorable lad named Gehl Kamille!
Which means some time next week,
Nathahniel, you'll be getting a note from me with a colored illustration of him enclosed! :D I hope I can do Gehl some justice for you!!
