Where do I download SAI Painter?
Posted 12 years agoI read that it was available online... I'd be grateful for advice! And yes, I've used Google to search for this, but I'm not sure how much I can trust the websites!

Why my FA gallery kinda sucks...
Posted 12 years agoYou may have noticed that I don’t update very often; well, there’s a reason for it! :3
I describe myself as a Writer on my profile, and that’s precisely how I see myself, and what I hope to accomplish for the future. I’ve had a very small (and rather insignificant) number of stories published commercially in the past, and naturally I want to up my production to something more considerable, like a novel! How I might eventually do it – by the traditional means of pitching my work to agents and publishers, or the newfangled methods of e-publishing and print-on-demand – remains to be seen, the main objective now is to get a polished novel out, and ready for inspection!
Now art is something I’ve dabbled in and enjoyed, but like most other people I have a day job, and limited time to pursue my hobbies. Five hours spent on a picture on Corel Photo-Paint is five hours away from my writing, and that much longer till I reach my primary goal.
This is why my last piece of original art (drawn by me) was uploaded six years ago, and everything since has been paid commissions by some lovely artists here on FA, including
ArcticLion,
Furnygma,
TKD_DBull,
Wolfthings and
Chibi-Marrow! These commissions are especially inspiring for me, because they’re either the artist’s interpretation of my characters (helping me visualise or refine their designs), or else they depict actual scenes from my writing.
So why haven’t I uploaded my fiction on FA, as other writers do? Because I’m aiming for commercial publication eventually... and distributing my work on a free public forum like FA would totally kill that.
The result is a lame-ass gallery, alas, by a writer who never displays his writing, and a series of commissions (lovely as they are) that increase at the rate of about one a year, at most. In practical terms that makes me a Watcher more than a Writer, I guess, and that isn’t likely to change unless my personal goals change.
I have two wonderful pieces to upload soon, hopefully: another story illustration by
ArcticLion, once I’ve written up a suitable description, and a wonderful “text commission” from
Nievelion, where he gives some tantalising glimpses into the writing of his greatest masterpiece yet, A Different Lesson! I hope you’ll enjoy them when they’re up! :3

Given the political shenanigans in the US...
Posted 13 years ago...Is this a bad time to create a science fiction utopia, call it a Republic, and expect the readers to sympathise? Seriously.
To any military furs who might read this...
Posted 13 years agoI watched Bully Boy at the theatre a couple of weeks ago, performed by two actors playing a Private and a Major respectively. I thought the acting was pretty good, and one noticeable part was how the actors SPOKE LOUDLY AND FORCEFULLY THE WHOLE TIME, EVEN IN SCENES THAT FOCUSED ON THE GROWING FATHER-SON AFFECTION BETWEEN THEM.
I thought it was brilliant how such tenderness came through their performance, since you wouldn’t normally connect sensitivity or affection to shouting.
So: is this really how military types talk all the time? I would expect to hear it on active duty, of course, but elsewhere? With your families and non-military friends? Does the verbal assertiveness you learn in the military carry into all social situations?

It was a toss-up between this and the more traditional wood:

I went for aluminium because it's lighter and adjustable without the aid of a hacksaw.

Posted 13 years agoAm thinking of buying a cane for my Plantar Fasciitis condition. Don't really need it, but canes are cool and classy!
When else can I walk around like a Victorian gentleman with ivory-tipped cane? :3

Shit yes.

Posted 13 years agoThose sexy images we see of men and women wearing half-stripped overalls or boiler suits... What holds the pants up? >.> Not the flimsily-tied sleeves around the waist, surely? Does anyone have real-life experience of this?
Example here.
Just wondering how a character of mine can pull this off without totally losing his pants.

Author question.
Posted 13 years agoI'm curious: does anyone know if author Tan Twan Eng has a day job? Besides writing fiction?
Hmp!
Posted 13 years agoJust had to re-watch someone who vanished off my Watch list. I hate when that happens. -_-
TV's "Beauty & the Beast" remade!
Posted 13 years agoPosh army practices.
Posted 13 years agoI have this Slovakian army jacket that says "Dry Clean Only"...
Is that standard practice now? Do soldiers dry clean their uniforms? How posh! Where do I enlist? >.>

Posted 13 years agoOn Monday I dusted my old copy of Joanne Baker’s 50 physics ideas you really need to know, opened a page at random, and read the entry on the theoretical “God Particle”.
Yesterday I heard that the LHC physicists had found it.
Coincidence? :)

Posted 13 years agoFifty Shades of Grey proves conclusively that authorial success is PURE FUCKING LUCK and substance has little to do with it. >.>
But, really, I've known that for some time now...
[EDIT] Okay, I confess, I haven't read it... And maybe I shouldn't speak about "substance" before doing so. I've had the good fortune to read brilliant fanfic before, and maybe there's something truly brilliant about Fifty Shades of Grey? Possibly - but not in the excerpts I've seen. It's really the "Twilight fanfic" part that gets me. <shudder>
