Online Store Now Open + Print Sale/Art Packs!
Posted 13 years agoSo I’ve been holding off announcing it but seeing as a few folks seem to have come across it somehow ;D, I might as well announce that I have put together an online storefront to make getting prints and other merchandise from me easier!
The store is here: Spira Mirabilis: The Art of Balaa
To date I’ve mostly been selling prints through DA but I dislike not having any quality control over how my prints look and feel it lacks that personal touch of the artist handling the prints that come your way. (I know I like that extra personal touch when I get art for myself <8). You can still get prints through my DA, but for prints through me, I work with custom printing profiles to ensure that the printed art looks as close as possible to how I intended it to look! Also all prints come hand signed with acid free gold or silver pen and usually an extra goody to thank you for your order <:.
I was holding off announcing it until I finished putting together some art bundles to sell and got mailing tubes ordered but I figured I might as well just announce it since there have been some sneaky stealth sales that took me by surprise. If any of those ninja buyers are reading this, thank you! You guys made me smile from ear to ear!
ALSO I am running a print sale on 12x18” signed open edition Lustre prints. The non-sale price is 45$ but at the moment I am offering them at 35$ each. Also, buy one print of any size and all subsequent prints of that size or smaller ship free! The sale will run to October 10th C:.
As it looks like I will not be at FC, I have also compiled some art packs/grab bags for the store! Shipping is FREE on all art pack orders placed within the USA. Each pack is different and a lot of retired prints that won’t be reprinted are included along with many other goodies C:. I may have enough for more bundles but I think the first batch is the best!
I will also be listing any originals I decide to sell, LE matted prints and other miscellaneous handmade items (sketchbooks, Victorian chokers O:, etc).
On an (superfluous personal ;P) sidenote, my original reason for starting the store was to raise enough funds for us to afford a puppy to share our lives with! This is something we have been talking about for years now but we want to be responsible pet owners and be able to set aside emergency funds for the little one before we take the plunge! All the money from the store will be going towards that so a huge thank you to those that already contributed to that fund =D!
PS: Orders on 12x18 prints(and mixed size print orders) placed this week will hopefully go out first thing next week (unless you already ordered, those should go out this week!). I had a bit of a snafu with the place I ordered mailing tubes from and they sent me the wrong size so I am waiting on a replacement now eek!

Posted 13 years agoWell I still don't get how to use this thing but I am trying to be more social with this whole social media thing, at least as far as sharing more art and not hoarding it because I'm too busy critiquing it to tears ;}. So decided to get an art specific Facebook page and figured I'd share the link with you all. Also for those that don't have/want a tumblr, I will be feeding tumblr posts into my facebook for ease of access ^^.
Faceboooooook!
and for those that do wanna follow my tumblr here it is again:
Spira Mirabilis: Tumblr
PS: love questions so please feel free to ask them on tumblr <:.
Thank you for all your support folks! <3 Also as a sidenote update, I will be putting together some Art packs to offer for sale in the coming future as it looks like I missed my window to get a dealer's table at Further Confusion but have somethings leftover from my last few cons! If you guys have specific things you'd like to see in them, please let me know <:.

Beep Beep art beeps!
Posted 13 years agoWell I never seem to get any good at updating journals D8..so I figured I would use it to help support a wonderful person and artist who deserves far more exposure <3.
Mab is offering commissions so please have a gander at her commission journal at: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/3648916/ and if not a commission maybe give her work a lovely watch. I am sure that would be equally appreciated <8.

Posted 13 years agoSo I will be there! I will be seated between
Bagheera and
Thornwolf in the dealer's den ^^;. I look forward to seeing you all there, please don't be shy to come by and say hello. If I'm spacey it is likely due to lack of caffeine, so I promise I am not trying to be rude! Just tell me to have more coffee and I will happily acquiesce (but prepare for the fallout!)!
A word on commissions, which I feel prudent to say in light of somethings I have heard about me in passing. I have always had an extremely hard time with con commissions right from the beginning. I tend to work best when I am burrowed into my tiny corner of the world with my music and films wrapped around me like a warm fuzzy blanket and I'm afraid the high energy hustle and bustle of the con has simply never done wonders for my muse. A whole day of sitting in a dealers den and not trying to be rude to folks while trying to muster a creative spark has left me exorbitantly tired by the dealer's den closing and I am left with a pile of work to do when all I wanna do is sleep XD!
I have spent countless cons crying over my inability to draw on demand and not drawing for weeks or even months after because I simply felt so down on myself. I realized it just wasn't worth making a little extra money at con to suffer that sort of mental break down. Gosh I envy you folks who can whip out a sketchbook and draw on a whim..but instead of getting easier for me after many cons, it just got worse with each con for me. I cannot allow myself to give work I cannot be proud of to the kind folks that entrust me with their sketchbooks and I simply can't keep staying up all night trying to squeeze out a single sketch and crying all over it ;P.
The reason I mention this is because I have heard rumors going around along the lines of my being a 'snob' and 'Too good for furries'. Please know this is the furthest thing from the truth. I have met so many fantastic folks in the fandom and have made some of my dearest friends here. I just realized after many tears and much self depreciating that I simply can't work as others do! I would much rather bring you things that come from an earnest and honest passion instead of things I desperately squeeze out at con to make a little extra money(mind you it certainly would help <: and this is not a diss at folks who work very hard at con and produce gorgeous art to boot. Also heck I'd love to be able to do that as I love sharing and creating for other folks..but alas cons are just not the place). I would also much rather enjoy my con time, be more cheerful with all you nice people and enjoy all the conversations and interesting folks instead of being mired in guilt and low self esteem ;}. No one needs anymore of that at a con!
But I am not officially closing commissions. Please come say hi and share your ideas with me <:. I would love to hear them and you never know what will spark an inferno. But I will not be taking a lot of work at con. I have a few things on the ol' backlog and don't want to keep those kind folks waiting any longer!
I will also have loads of other things including for the first time jumbo art prints! I will also have art prints, bookmarks, GRAB BAGS full of stuff and I mean full =D, a small number of Werewolf calendars, and..err I forget but loads of other stuff <:. Please come by, even just to say hi. Will be lovely to see ya all there!
Safe travels to all of you traveling long distances and even to those right around the bend! SEE YOU ALL THERE!

Fox Amoore ~Legends of Valanor
Posted 13 years agoJust helping spread the word for a good friend and moreover something of a rare commodity in this community, a musical artist! I can't speak for all artists but without music my muse would simply starve. Music is the harmony that organizes and guides my chaotic flow of creativity. It is emotion, it is an electric energy that syncs symbiotically with the painting/drawing process (at least for me). And so to know someone who weaves these lyrical worlds is akin to touching magic for myself. I am thrilled to give my support and spread the word as far as I can so his music can flow to the ends of the world and perhaps even inspire new creations in it's wake!
Fox Amoore recently released a new album, Legends of Valanor which he has available for sale in both physical copies of the cd's and digital downloads. The cover art, created by
Kaji and the inner spread by
AlectorFencer, are reasons enough to own this beautiful cd, but the music..the music will carry you away to far off worlds and adventures untold.
Even if you aren't interested in the cd, I hope you will check out Fox's page on FA and give his work a listen..it will be well worth your time, I guarantee it! He shares a great amount of his body of work with the community free of charge. I am grateful for his enthusiasm, his generosity and his talent! Thank you for inspiring me Fox!

Posted 13 years agoOH I know I do spoil you guys ;B! But what can I say I find art candy irresistible and it doesn't even give you cavities (unless there are eye cavities and then I'm in trouble 8C ) . So sorry for spamming your inboxes with gratuituous amounts of sugary eye lovlies <:...(I'm not realllly sorry though...I am sorry about not being sorry if that counts for something :>)
Anyway the very ultra sweet and mega talented
AlectorFencer is now selling the 'Backgrounds of Red Lantern' art book which features a fantastic collection of the many backgrounds she painted for the Red Lantern comic. A better description from Alector herself:
"Red Lantern - The Backgrounds is a collection of all background illustrations and landscape concepts of the renowned comic "Red Lantern - The Crimson Divine" by Rukis and AlectorFencer and includes 45 pages of full backgrounds, concepts, huge spread pages and full bleed comic pages that reveal you the world of the Shanivaar Islands where the story takes place.
The folio is a high quality printed (8 x 11 inch) on 170 g/m² thick paper, so quite a sturdy thick folio with lush colourful quality prints!"
Please do check it out. Right now she is also offering a limited time 15% off discount for anyone who pre-orders. I had the privilege (by virtue of being extra annoying and begging) of seeing some of these pieces outside the comic and it's just breathtaking to see them as standalone pieces C=. They have such presence in the comic panels but a life of their own outside of the comic as well!
So if you are a fan of the comic or just like delicious art books that can cover every open flat space in your home, as they do in mine, please do have a gander and give it your consideration.

Annoying..I know!
Posted 13 years agoApparently I had a tumblr account all along, I simply don't recall when I actually got one ;}. I suppose that means I ought to put it to some use.
My Tumblr= http://eternalstirrings.tumblr.com/
So what do you folks like to see most in artist tumblr accounts? I'm still trying to figure out how this whole thing works!
I am thinking to use it to post wip's, process pics, project porgress, sketchins and scribblescraps and assorted other artsy silliness. Also, maybe it will encourage me to draw more when I stumble into those nasty tricksy art tar pits xB.

Omnomnom Inspiration Candy
Posted 13 years agoDon't think I've ever seen Vantid offer her sketches up for grabs like this so this is a rare opportunity. http://www.furaffinity.net/view/7794793/
I don't know about you guys personally but among my favorite stuff from artists is usually the stuff they never even post online. I love wandering through other artist's sketchbooks and following their tracks into wild forbidden realms of inspiration. Sometimes it's half realized momentary glimpses into lucid dreams..other times frantically scribbled notes on worlds that exist in their minds alone. Whether you are an artist or not I think these journeys offer some of the most intimate glimpses into the secret machinations of any artist and to me are therefore among the most prized. Oh mind you I love the finished art as well..but something about the raw untamed scrawlings on a corner of a sheet of paper tantalize and excite me. These are the visions before they are refined and sometimes tamed..the diamonds in the rough c=.
Also I love reading her scribbled notes XD.
Please have a gander and support a fellow artists mad mad scrawlings!

I finally broke down and joined the masses >8.. I'm sorry folks. I held out as long as I could. My schedule has kept my days fairly wrapped up with one deadline after the next and I feel endlessly antisocial! Twitter has been a lovely way to catch snippets from the goings on of folks lives and dropping them notes here and there. If ya would like to follow me there, I will likely start posting sketches etc I do between work projects there ^^

Your Spirit Animal: No.
Posted 13 years agoSo a little while ago FA pulled my 'Carl Sagan Is my Spirit Animal' profile pic off inexplicably. I have to admit I was a little pouty ;D but mostly amused. I don't know if it was reported, by whom, or why it was pulled but I guess my spirit animal is too cool for you FA!
I'd have been happy to properly credit the source of the photo as not mine...because obviously I do not hold the copyright to Carl Sagan (alas!). Universe, I am sorry I infringed on your copyright 8C.
But, belated though it is, just thought I'd share my amusement.
So Rad. TOO Rad.

We live in a New World
Posted 13 years agoWe live in a world that with each passing day grows to be more connected. International boundaries no longer define friendships or the people and events that shape our days and move us to action. The majority of my friends today live abroad or at the very least some thousands of miles away from where I live. But I am able to partake in their lives, to know them and even love them and to me the world becomes a small and familiar place and all it's myriad of sorrows become mine. Several decades ago Germany or Spain or Uganda were countries on a map and places in my history books, but otherwise they were just a name, a place that had little impact on my life. In today's technological world, the everyman has a voice and where before these voices were scattered and disconnected from like voices, today they may join in unison and make themselves heard.
To become relevant, ideas need to become familiar and to become familiar they need to be spread. How lucky we are to be able to do so today with such ease, a click of the button and a few minutes of our time.
I encourage you to spare a few minutes of your time to watch this video, take a moment to tweet the vid or otherwise link it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y4MnpzG5Sqc
Even if you feel that there are issues that take precedence to this one, to know of this issue costs you nothing and to know it makes it relevant. Awareness itself is a powerful tool for change. Make someone else aware even if you don't think it will make a difference C=.
Beyond this, as a personal addendum, I believe we owe it to the world to better humanity. To hold ourselves to a continuing higher standard. To stop even one such atrocity may not stop them all but it does better us as a whole to say "we will not allow this". It will take many such steps to change the world, but with each small step we prove to ourselves we are better than we were before and that we are capable of change. Today we live in a world that listens and hears voices and cries of people we did not once understand, it is a changed and changing world and we are it's voices.
I have always wondered personally how we are to make people listen and care about the plights of animals and the natural places in the world when so much misery, apathy and hatred exist in our own human world. If we cannot care for a fellow of our own species, how can we truly do so for a species beyond our own? I think the answer is right there. We must do both because the plight and it's consequences are the same. In either case, we will lose, be it our dignity, beauty, or diversity. We must do both, because they are intricately interconnected and one cannot be separated from the other. We, as the custodians of this world (whether we chose this responsibility or not, whether it is fair to demand ourselves to be held to a higher standard or not) simply must meet the challenge at the risk of losing our humanity.
(PS: As a caveat emptor, do research your causes. It is easy to be stirred to action emotionally by a well made video or well written article. Even if the cause is legitimate, if you desire to be more proactive on whatever the issue, know what you support and read up on the causes/groups you give your time and money to. Some may mean well but do more damage than good, and some may do with the pretense of doing good. As easy as it is to spread word about good causes in today's e-world, it is just as easy to mistake opinions for facts and take them at face value. I am not saying this to detract from the necessity for awareness on the above issue. I only wish people to be more critical about whatever they read, wherever they read it. )

I am not saying this to detract from the necessity for awareness on the above issue. I only wish people to be more critical about whatever they read, wherever they read it. )
Farewell Adam Adamowicz
Posted 13 years agoWhen eagerly awaiting to yank that hot new game off the shelves of a store, we often forget or just don't go so far as to think many people worked tirelessly for countless days to bring those games to life. When we immerse ourselves in seamless worlds we don't think about the fact that every piece of that world had to be stitched meticulously together by hand. Countless pieces of concept art go into just about everything you see in it's polished form, even the simplest of objects may have gone through many revisions to reach their finally. But we don't think of the concept artists when we play those games, at least not most of us..and that is because they have done their job well and stepped away from their work to let it live and breath on it's own. Concept artists are coveted in the video game and movie industry but they are the people that often receive little to no credit for the realization of the final product. I believe most artists thrive in a state of humility and are content enough creating without fanfare or spotlights but it is a shame when a great mind, a great artist is lost, and the world goes whirring along with hardly a missed beat. And we who are adulating fans of the creations they poured themselves liberally into it will, in most cases, never even know of their passing.
I found out yesterday about Adam Adamowicz and his vast contributions to Fallout 3 and Skyrim, two enormously successful games for Bethesda game studios. I felt saddened that the first time I heard his name was to find out he had passed on from aggressive cancer in his very early 40's.
It is always a sad blow to the creative world to lose such a talented artist only entering his prime. I wanted to take a moment from my day to think of him and express gratitude to the legacy he left behind and how much pleasure I have derived from his work without knowing it was his work. I hope years from now people are still playing the games he helped create, seeing and experiencing the visions he infused into those worlds. In so doing may his memory live on.
To fans of Bethesda games or art enthusiasts in general, please spare a moment from your day to think of Adam and of the visions the world has lost with his passing.
A memorial article sharing some of his art and sharing a bit more about the man behind the art:

Really cute art style
Posted 14 years agohttp://www.furaffinity.net/user/sammysstudio/ is offering commissions. I don't usually post pimp journals (just feel bad pimping one person but not the next and/or spamming you guys with a buncha journals XD) but noticed they only had one comment. I remember way back when watching this gal's DA gallery and forgot entirely she migrated over here. Looks like commissions are her primary source of income for now so have a gander! Very adorable sweet art style C: .
Hulu?
Posted 14 years agoHad an unexpected project fall in my lap earlier this month. I had planned to take a bit of a hiatus from commercial work and work on my own things but I'd have been dumb to pass this up. What it has meant though is Ive just had my nose in the grindstone all month. While I usually listen to music to work, sometimes I need something meatier to keep the logical side of my brain entertained enough so it doesn't have me wandering around the house dusting everything in spontaneous bursts of procrastination. So I've been watching Hulu plus while working. Only I don't really know what to watch!
So what series would you guys recommend? Any genre is okies C:...just need things to watch while working!

Showing My Age here...
Posted 14 years agoI've been feeling nostalgic for the 80's and 90's lately. It's strange, I recall vividly the mid 90's when I was obsessed with anything pre-1960 and I collected magazines, bought vintage photos from antique stores and a lot more weird stuff. (To be fair I still buy vintage photos... I like to think about the stories of the people in the photos and also feel bad that they ended up being 'rid' of... It's almost like brushing away the person from history... ) But back from the tangent, what I remember most clearly is having the precise thought that the 90's were so boring and dull and I would never look back at them with the same sort of fondness I held for times before myself. Well I was wrong.
So on to the point, we've been watching 80's and 90's movies to stave off the incessant nostalgic itch. But alas, Im running out of movies I can think to watch =C.
So what are your favorite movies of the 90's and 80's? We have been watching everything from cop dramas to sci-fi so anything is game!
Oh and movies watched so far: Running Man, Men in Black, Negotiator, Rush Hour, Jurassic Park, Air Force One, Fifth Element, Addams Family, A Far Off Place, Chain Reaction, Patriot Games, Robocop, T2, Us Marshalls, The Fugitive, The Jackal, The Peacemaker, Murder of Crows..and I forget the rest.
edit: thanks guys! This journal made my Sunday all full of warm fuzzies <3!

Support all the amazing inspiring artists that fill these galleries with wonder, inspiration and dreams. I owe so much to just the visions that you all create and I don't leave comment enough to let you all know that. Thank you! May your year be filled with inspiration <3.

New Year's resolutions: I'll show you mine if you show me...
Posted 14 years agoyours!
It was a quiet new years eve yesterday but I think one of the best I have known. It doesn't take big buzzing parties to send my heart soaring, but rather the quiet simple moments in which I may find my heart's harmony. And so it was this year. We spent it watching movies and eating yummy foods..and smiling ^_^!
I don't know if it is now a faux pas to make new year's resolutions but I think they are a good thing. Sometimes we need to make promises to ourselves to be our own motivator.. or to place a self imposed deadline. Surely we spend enough time having others resolve what is to be done with our time....but to choose to better yourself and spend that small surplus of time we have to use for ourselves is a worthy effort imho! Furthermore..perhaps we should resolve to do more than we think we are able to accomplish...to reach for the assumed unattainable and to attain it . Modest resolve has it's place and necessity but to reach beyond yourself is to discover that the most distant horizon you can see is in fact well within your reach..and bigger ones still may yet be reached. Reach big, dream even bigger!
So here are mine!
The Modest:
~ get fit =D!
~ Call my mom more often (I'm terrible with talking on the phone eeee..hide from all the phones!)
~ Be more visible on FA and other online galleries...just share more which in turn hopefully will be a positive reenforcing cycle as it used to be!
~ Wrap up all old owed art by the end of January
~ Be a better and more reliable friend to the people that lend so much optimism and hope into my daily life.
~ Practice more...speedpaints/sketches/color studies
~ OC!
~ Put new art books to good use xB~
Bit less than modest:
~ Be braver about sharing my visions and let the world decide to make of them.
~ During 2010-2011, I started developing some projects on the side between work projects, the bulk of the effort has been placed into developing a graphic novel. This is something I never even remotely considered doing before as my strength's artistically have never really been steeped in the dynamic motion filled imagery that is necessary for a graphic novel. It is something I have admired deeply and wanted to be able to do in my work as well...though I doubted myself (and if I'm to be honest still do...but hey you have to push yourself to do things you aren't sure you can do if you are to ever know if you really can!). As this story developed I realized it must be told through imagery and a graphic novel of sorts is the only method I could think for it to work. 2011 was spent laying the foundations for the novel such as establishing the story, characters, practicing page layout, sketching, composition and deciding on the visual direction of the novel. Into 2012 my plan is to start unveiling the project and pushing it into the final stages of realization. To begin with core visual elements must be established, ie cover art and coloring style for the story pages. The novel name is Savuti which is also the name for the main character the story follows.
I am hoping to start unveiling the project soon and hopefully have a website going with regular updates happening sometime this year.
~Outside of that there are several other projects on the docket and as Im never really good about working in a linear fashion I hope to see these other projects develop further during the course of this year, but with the bulk of my energy dedicated to the above project. The projects are:
* The Phoenix Willow novel
* collaborative story project with Bagheera
* Wings Portfolio collaborative project: using drapery to depict various characters in spiritual flight
* and all the rest of the 'biting off more than you can chew' =D~~~..here's to a year of talking with my mouth full!
Should be an exciting, if not bit of a nervous, year ;D! But I'm looking forward to every moment and sharing in all your excitements as well!
So what are your resolutions for this year? Big, small, and all those in between! I would love to hear them all C:

I must say, this is the most interesting spam...
Posted 14 years agoIve never received a spam greeting card before..I have to say they get more and more clever with their manner of delivery. The link should be clean as Egreetings is a big site:
http://www.egreetings.com/view?i=45.....p;source=eg999
The card reads:
"Merry late Christmas Balaa ... This is hard for me because I have never done anything like this.. but I have a huge crush on you. I have never been able to tell you for reasons which you would quickly identify as obvious if you knew who this was.
To help you out with your guessing I made a few pictures and videos with "Balaa" written on my body. They're kind of risque photos so I had to make a profile at www.crushmatches.com and post them there. My username in the members area is "Balaaandme11" (It's a free website. Requires a CC for age verification but it's free. Annoying, I know. I had to do it too.)
But anyway sign up at www.crushmatches.com and once you are inside search for "Balaaandme11". I want you to guess who I am and then approach me yourself. I'm shy and this is the bravest thing I've probably ever done, but you need to do the rest.
xoxo, Secret Admirer"

At least unlike most spam this gave me a good giggle ;D. Brava on that front!

Happy Hogswatch!
Posted 14 years agoHappy Hogswatch to all or whatever the occasion may be in your home and heart! I wish you all a season ripe with things jolly and all other things 'olly!**
Wherever your spirits may wander this holiday season, be places familiar or strange, may you find company even in the highest of boughs. May your adventures to come be carpeted in velds of verdant green, silver mountain peaks and great vermillion plumed clouds perched atop beryl crowned oaks that sing to the wind. May you wander too far to return to the start and the roads ahead be winding and strange, for the bolder the path the greater the reward. The horizon awaits you; may it be that you face it with courage and hope in your heart and seek it to it's end before seeking the horizon yet beyond.
I thank you all for the courage you give me in my life, through your words, through the kindnesses you've shown and simply to know you is to become greater than I am now.
Apologies for the repeat from my last image...some folks don't catch the descriptions under the images..which is a shame as folks often share some valuable insight and meaning behind their art therein. But for those that just can't get into the habit, wanted to leave my words here as well. Thank you all for indulging me!
I hope you all have and will be spending your holidays with the people you love and collecting memories to keep you warm through the coldest and darkest days to come. I for one have had a blessed day, one of the best I have managed and have found myself in the embrace of such warmth I feel my heart can hardly contain all the joy it has given me!
**Blatant and unashamed Terry Pratchett reference
PPS: If you have never watched/read The Hogfather, it is one of my favorite holiday movies...certainly with consistency that is more than just pure calorific sugary Christmas fluff! I highly recommend it if you are looking for new Christmas movies to add to your holiday collection C:.
