General | Posted 16 years agoMy apologies to those who may be trying to get ahold of me; life is beginning to get really hecktic even in spite of having completely dropped out for the semester, hence having completely dropped out for the semester.
The new controller board works and the drive is alive; however, it's definitely on its last leg. With my most recent paycheck, I have obtained a new drive which will be here Wednesday. Hopefully, this one will last me a lot longer. (It's also more than twice the capacity. >_> )
Planted a few seeds today, not that anyone is terribly interested in that.

General | Posted 16 years agoSo for those of you wondering, "Just when is that Baph kid gonna get up off his lazy duff and finish another story?"... It might not be for a while. A few days ago, the hard drive I had all my stories on was killed by a sudden... thing. Honestly, we're not entirely sure what actually killed it; it merely happened to coincide with something else that was going on with the house wiring at that time.
NOW! Don't despair. There is a chance I can recover it. The controller board might be all that fried, in which case all I'd need to do is obtain a new one and replace it. The new one left San Jose yesterday, so it'll be here shortly.

1. I chose a language not supported by most Windows machines. I don't even know if Vista supports it.
2. I chose a deliberately obscure language, so those who might be able to see it probably wouldn't recognize it.
3. Even if the reader might potentially recognize it and even be able to read it, they might think the date is all wrong for my message.
The language involved was Tibetan. Transliterated, it stated "lo gsar bkra shis bde legs" (pronounced "losar tashi delek"); translated, that's "Happy New Year." That date was one of two accepted dates for the Lunar new year (the other taking place during FC).
So, in spite of all that asininity, I was still sending a happy message. :3

I will say, FC completely redeemed furry cons for me; I don't think I've ever had that much fun or learned so much in one week. If I ever get some free time, expect to see more stuff posted here, of a much more mixed-media variety.
Speaking of free time, the reason I've not posted this entry yet is because I've barely had any of the stuff since the con; mostly I've been catching up with classes, but I've also been looking for loans and stuff.
So, in direct opposition of what a lot of people seem to be going through right now, I've actually picked up a second job: I'm now officially an IT Technician for the Magdalena Ridge Observatory - a collaboration between the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology, the California Institute of Technology, and Cambridge University. I'll be helping them run a lot of their hardware, as well as assisting the current webmaster. Neat thing is, I'm going to be working with a lot of my professors as well, as many of them intend to use the observatory when it's completed (as do I). It'll be really nice. I start Friday.
In addition to all of this, I've finally been able to get my old SPARCclassic machine, Concord, up and running properly - with a disgusting PC emulator program and accelerator card. I'm currently running DOS 6.22 on it, but I have Windows 3.1 installed and I'd like to find a copy of Windows 95 to throw on there just because. Basically, it's a little virtual machine on the computer, with its own separate processor. I'd like to give it its own hard drive, but the accursed external drive enclosure is kind of broken; I need to figure out how to fix it still.

Until the con itself begins the following day, I'm not sure what I'll be doing; most likely, I'll end up screwing around on the DS or something. Yes, I'll be bringing my DS.
Thursday, there aren't any panels really going on, so I'll be hanging out in various locations. Friday, I'm on the "Difursity in Writing" and "Myths, Legends, and Fairytales [sic]" panels; I also intend to attend a few of the fursuit-making panels. Saturday, I'm on the "Fleshing Out a Character" and "Magic in Writing" panels; I'll also definitely be attending the "Furry Ham Radio" as a ham operator myself (KC8UKQ). Sunday, I shall be on the Spirituality Roundtable, as well as the "Artistic Inspiration" and "World Building" panels; it will probably be this day that I actually go see the "Waves of Thought" room.
During the times not mentioned, I'm not really sure where I'll be; most likely merely wandering about. We're leaving Tuesday mid-afternoon.
So yeah, those are the plans as they stand. *shrug* Felt like sharing.

In related news, I never thought I'd be asking this, but... anyone going to FC willing to share a room? ^^; I've gotten a strong "maybe" from the aforementioned housemates, but I'd rather not necessarily cramp their room any more than it is already (no one's called "tub" yet, I think...). So, while that path is still open, anyone else out there looking for a roommate for the weekend? I'll be arriving Wednesday and leaving Tuesday, if that's an issue. Also, I have no problem with folks "doing their thing" in the same room, if that's a concern for some.

I've mostly been catching up with classes; as-is, I've got about three weeks to get my act together completely in one class, less time for the other two. Still, won't be too terribly difficult.
I've also been working on those commissions mentioned at the bottom of my journal; I think I'll be able to finish the story by the end of the weekend, while the costume will probably take until roughly the end of the year what with classes, work, travel, etc.
However, I think I'll be able to deliver that one in person, seeing as I'm all but verified to be attending Further Confusion -- as a panelist! The founder of the con approached me a few days ago with the offer, and, while I've not officially accepted yet, I intend to once I get everything straightened out (likely by Friday). But yeah, this is a huge deal for me; I'm still all bouncy about it. ^^;

General | Posted 17 years agoSo lately my wallet's been suffering something fierce, and I decided I'd try this again since it's been almost 3/4 a year since I tried last time. As such, I am asking folks if there is any interest in commissioned stories from me. Said stories would be given top priority over other stories as soon as money was received (classwork does come first), and could be anywhere from G to X in nature. Let's say... $10 for a five-pager (as defined by the Serif text in OpenOffice, double-spaced), price negotiable for longer or shorter? Note or comment if you're interested; I'll limit the slots available based on the nature of what is requested first coupled with the ability for swift payment.

Anyway, what am I working on? Am I just sitting around and feeling my ass grow? ...Okay, so I am, but I've done some things too.
I've completed what I feel is the first half of the fifth installment of the ScreenPets serial. True, I had gotten that far back in June some time, but I need to regain motivation to finish that. ^^; In addition to this, I've begun writing a preliminary setup and script for a future doujinshi, a co-op operation between myself and Shimmerfox. This project will take quite a while, as I've got to get a good feel for the characters involved and she's got to get the hang of drawing them; however, when it's done, we'll both be posting it. Here's hoping it's worth the wait!
(You should go watch her anyway; she and I discussed it some last night, and I believe she's going to be uploading some of the preliminary sketches some time in the near future. :3 )

I got an old IBM RT from 1986 operational, and in the process made contact with the original AIX head architect, the head architect for AIX on the RS/6000, a former manager of network management systems at UUNET, and the current head architect of the OpenAFS project. I obtained and repaired an SGI Origin 200 server, as well as a SPARCclassic. I made an old 1970s portable oscilloscope fully operational. I performed a "feed the masses" miracle. I narrowly averted jury duty. I learned how to make Apache work. I obtained a student loan for the Fall semester. I registered for an orbital mechanics (rocket science) course. I read the entirety of the Dragon Half manga. I've begun research to develop a universal model for galactic evolution. Oh yeah, and I'm on my way to buying a house, maybe.

- I do not mind chatting with most anyone; if you message me and I can basically understand what you're talking about (i.e. not in Turkish), I'll probably respond. Keep in mind however, just because I'm online doesn't mean I'm at my computer; I leave my system on pretty much 24/7, meaning I'm always logged in.
- Type-fucking is a very fickle thing for me. Sometimes, if you make the advance, I'll go with it; other times, I'll either tell you to fuck off or just not even reply. Knowing you even a little is a huge help in that area regardless of my mood. The thought of the act in and of itself is not a terribly huge fetish of mine, and the few times I've tried it, it resulted in absolutely nothing. PLEASE, do not message me if you're only doing so because you think you've got the answer for that. Also - and this is a good rule of thumb for interaction with anyone - DON'T USE HYPNOTIC TRIGGERS WITHOUT GETTING PERMISSION. No, hypnosis never worked for me; however, doing that makes you come across as a creep, especially if I know what it's supposed to do. The moment either you do this or I realize that's what you've done, I am not speaking to you again.
