Hey all!

It’s been a busy month of dealing with some personal responsibilities ahead of being able to crack down and make a plan for returning to the online space.

But - I wanted to give an update so it’s out there and I’m clear with my intentions (as they currently are) moving forward for the foreseeable future.

Right now I have two main priorities: finish solidifying the available commission options and the processes for them so I have all the clarity to pass onto any one who would like to purchase one.
And establish a realistic schedule for myself on when I would be working on commissions/immediately shareable work (more details on that below) that won’t exasperate my current long COVID symptoms, and allow me to continue personal behind the scene projects.

I feel like it’s really important - especially right now with the animation industry still basically in the dirt where I live - to make a routine that works for me and doesn’t put anyone waiting on art in an unclear situation. I always try to be transparent on when interruptions have come in the past, but with needing to pace myself on how long I can work/when I can, I think it’s necessary to set something solid that everyone is in the loop on.

When it comes to immediately shareable work, what I mean by that is that much of the drawing I’ve done this last year has been related to DnD and my group’s campaigns. Recently, we’ve decided to create a separate account for archiving our DND adventures and drawings just to see where it goes. But this means that all the art I have actually managed to do over the last year, currently can’t be posted anywhere before our archive.

I do intend to post some of the art here once I can, especially since there’s some art that would only be able to be posted here (wink wink), but if you are interested in seeing that stuff before I would be able to post it here/things that may not be posted here at all, you can find it on Instagram under “balladsofwrymsong”.

Anyway! I just wanted to be up front publicly. The year has been hard mentally and physically and that’s slowed me down on things I’ve wanted to return to and do, and that’s something I want to attempt to get some control over if I can.

Well, long time no post. Usually this isn't something I'd make a public thing of, because I find the line between general announcement of personal things of this nature and accidental guilt-tripping or oversharing to be a thin one that I often think people cross over without realizing. But in this case, because it's something most (if not all of us at this point) have dealt with to some degree, I feel as though sharing it isn't oversharing, and is a reasonable explanation for my absence as well as a potential PSA.

Back in the spring, around the time I got less frequent in posting, I got really sick. I was COVID, but not like I'd had it before. Somehow, despite not leaving the house nearly as much as before, I managed to catch it and it was the worst I'd ever felt. I was down for over a month, unable to walk around, in pain and now have "long covid" issues. This is essentially why I fell off the planet of the earth every where. Between looking for a job, and having issues with breathing for months, it's been an exhausting time. I don't even know how it's come to be October - it's crazy to me that one minute it was spring and I was down for the count, and the next it's October and I'm still building up my stamina.

I found out from a friend who's a paramedic that apparently Covid spiked at that time and no one talked out it where I live. So I guess the PSA part about this is that we should all periodically be keeping an eye on covid news if we can find it because it's still bad enough to take us out in an instant apparently.

Anyway, I'm finally kinda feeling like myself, and would like to be back to drawing and posting and interacting more regularly. I'm trying to build up to being back and more productive versus the me that's existed the last five or more months. So hopefully, I'll be back with the backlog of drawings I have managed to do soon.

Like I said, I don't share this stuff generally because I never want it to be seen as garnering for sympathy or guilt tripping like "woah as me, please help!" because I have very strong feelings on that matter and I could write a much longer blurb on my worries of the rise of weaponized guilt on the internet these days. But I do share it because it's something that's actively still happening and can affect all of us and I want people to be aware because it fucked me up and I don't want it fucking other people up too.

Hey all!
So my last ychs haven't seemed to go over all that well (which is fine! I never want people to feel pressured to buy my stuff if they aren't interested or feel guilty about that!). It's left me wondering what kind of stuff people are into for their characters and what they look for in a ych or similar commission. If you've seen my gallery or followed me for a while, you know I don't tend to do hardcore fetish stuff, but outside of that, I want to get an idea of what people are into.

More girls predominant, more boys predominant? More NSFW singles, multiples, more SFW stuff with certain themes?

I have some ideas drawn up already, but I'm hesitant to put them up right now and have them not get traction while I use my daily reminder when they could be put towards something else. I seem to get cracked down on reminders anytime I accidentally mess up, unlike some people who can get away with posting multiple reminders every day, so I try to be more cautious and play by FAs' rules as closely as I can, even when sometimes they don't make a lot of sense to me.

So yeah! Any guidance on what you guys like would be helpful! Thanks!

Recently I've been having a big think about the state of my digital sketch commissions. This is a long thought so there's a TL;DR at the bottom.

As I play with digital art and evolve there, I tend to get too caught up in details for the type of art I'm trying to do, and it definitely happened again. My digital sketches have become closer to rendered pieces, maybe like halfway or more towards it and left the realm of sketches in my mind. The time I now spend on them is overkill, especially for the prices I currently have them at. It's just not sustainable at this point to keep them up this way.

So, I'm gonna play around. See if I can get closer to what I consider a sketch. Something closer to what I adore in digital sketches - looser, less focused on every line being perfect versus nice and sketchy. I'm not sure how soon I'll have a chance to do it since I'm in the middle of a game of "broken art telephone" with some friends, and it's my turn on the piece. BUT, sometime soon I want to try some new things and get my sketches to actually remain sketches and not have them sometimes take days because I'm being too clean for the type of thing I'm trying to achieve.

Don't get me wrong! I'm really enjoying figuring out rendering in a way I like, and all these recent pieces have taught me a lot more (and kept me a little more sane with the whole job search thing). I'll most likely implement them as a different type of commission altogether, like a semi-rendered or something. I think it's about time to separate them from the sketches.

I also want to clarify that any YCHs I have open currently with this kind of sketch style as examples will remain with the current style - even after I adjust my sketches. Any new commissions or any of my same-day pin-ups as well when I have them open. This will remain the norm until I have a new plan and find something I like.

I'll update my commission sheets to reflect everything when I have it all figured out. For the sketches, the aim is NOT to change prices. I just want to adjust to sketches that actually feel like sketches so you can get your work faster. Then, I'll work on expanding my options for more rendered work instead of offering just sketches. Recently, I've been really enjoying backgrounds and perspective work, which I haven't felt in a long time, and I'd love to do more of that. I have a YCH sitting on the waiting desk for after I get this all figured out because the bg has some nice details I don't want to rush.

Anyway! This is just where I'm at. I know this was a little long, but I wanted to be transparent and also get this thought off my chest. I'm really enjoying being back and working with people's characters and stuff, and once I have a job again, I intend to keep going on weekends or between crunches - my last project had an intense turnaround time, and I'm damn proud of what we all did with a small team in that time. I've been told it's actually coming out, hopefully around summer!

Thanks to everyone who welcomed me back after I disappeared for two or three years. I hope I can continue doing work you're interested in and happy to have.

TL;DR: My digital sketches have evolved from sketches into semi-render ones, which take too much time for the prices and look too clean for my taste, and I want to change them to be more like actual sketches. All current YCHs, same-day pin-ups when offered, and commissions bought now will be in the current style. I will be testing and updating my digital sketches, commission types, and price sheets as soon as I can. Once those are up, the changes will be the norm, and things will follow those guidelines from then on.

I've been looking for a new art Discord channel to share my stuff and interact with the commission community more since all the ones I used before have closed down. I've tried searching, but I've learned I'm not great at judging whether one is actually active in a positive way. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Hey all!

Life has had some twists and turns recently. Everything up to the holiday season was incredibly busy and pretty much ran me ragged, but as of today, I am no longer employed at my current studio. It's all good! Unfortunately, the aftermath of the strikes is still going strong, so there's just not a lot of work to go around. Hopefully, I'll be back on my feet again soon, and I have a personal short film I've put aside for a few years to work on now that I can.

But! That does mean I'll have more time for commissions! I'm not sure if I'll dip my toes back into streaming, but once I'm caught up on my current commission queue, expect some same-day commission ads to pop up. They won't be every day since I don't want to overwork myself, and I never know when I'll end up with an interview or animation test (or hopefully a job again!). For now, payment methods will change for a bit, and then I will be back to normal after I've got a full-time job or more reliable income again.

I'll explain more in dms with anybody looking for a commission.

Sometime over this long weekend (Happy Canadian Thanksgiving!) I'll be opening commission slots for the next little while. I'll only be taking a handful at a time, and they'll be first come, first serve for the most part, so if you want to grab a slot, please keep an eye out.

I'm going to be updating all my commission sheets before then, too. Prices are not going to change for most things (there is one except further explained below), but new commission types will be added, and I want to update the examples with more recent ones where I can.

On the note of new commission types: I will be updating my sketch style to reflect better the stuff I've been doing since my hiatus here. While I'll still offer the old style as an alternative sketch style with an updated price to match the amount of labour it takes, my recent sketches have used different tools, and I want to offer that as my main.

All my current YCHs will be the only ones using the old style as the primary clean-up. All ones made after this will be case to case, depending on a bunch of factors. On another note: before I went on hiatus I had a spooky YCH drawn up. Originally it was going to be all pencil crayon and be a really big piece but I had no biters on any of the slots. I’m debating between changing it to markers or my digital shaded sketch style but which one of those ideas attracts you guys more?

I’m trying to save up for a desktop and don’t want a bog down my gallery with a ton of YCHs just sitting there which may just be something that bothers only me but it bothers me nonetheless

Turns out my apprehension at handling more than one site was purely from some stupid anxiety over leaving suddenly and making up fake consequences in my head. Once, I posted that last journal and actually broke the seal... I suddenly felt so much better?? There was a moment of "oh wait, I thought this was something I was incapable of at this moment, but actually, I feel like I could totally manage it and not put crazy expectations on myself."

So, while I won't be as active as before for the time being, I do plan on crossposting between here and Tumblr, including all my fanart and commissions, including opening slots and new YCHS as they come.

Well, long time no see! I'm just gonna cut right to the point here: I'm sorry that I've totally dropped off the earth.

Last year when I said I was coming back soon, I had meant it at the time, but then work got crazy. I got put on a project that was incredibly fast-paced and while I'm very proud of what we accomplished in the time frame we had, it basically took over my life. I've come to realize that while I want to get back into this community because I've missed it, that it's not possible for me to be doing it while juggling several sites. It's too much for me to keep up with.

Essentially what I'm saying is for the foreseeable future, I'm only going to be active on Tumblr. It's my main hub for both my fandoms and my art. I'm currently in the process of moving many of my old commission drawings over there and rebuilding my TOS. I intend to restart commissions for the first time in a few years. I missed doing them and interacting with you guys a lot but between work and everything else, I gotta prioritize where I'm active, and for right now, that's Tumblr.

Wow been a while huh?

The last few months have been a wild rollercoaster and stepping away for a bit in retrospect was the best thing for me. For several years, even before old FA account went active, all my time was monopolized. It was school, and dealing with my new disability and the lawsuit at the time, then commissions and work on top of school. It was a lot and I didn’t realize how ragged I was running myself until I was making my portfolio for my graduation/to apply into the industry and found that I felt like I had almost nothing that represented me. Lots of work for school and others and such, but not a lot that I looked at and thought, I did this just for me because I wanted it.

And I don’t ever want to feel that way again. I’m really excited to be coming back. I missed FA and talking to the community but I definitely also learned a lesson about making time for myself too on top of everything else.

I got a job a few months ago and it’s amazing and a dream job for right out of school. The project I’m apart of has been announced so I can say that I’m currently apart of the design and animation team for the Crooked City series. That’s all I can say on that but now that I’ve been working for a while, and have a pretty good feel for my new schedule, I’m confident in coming back.

I’ve spent all my free time basically indulging myself in fandom and getting back to writing fanfic again. I started a Tumblr which is basically going to be all fandom art and just be enjoying myself so if you wanna come find me over there please do! I go by SnowBat makes stuff. Or just look under the Motorcity tag, you’ll find me fast! There’s no furry stuff atm, and at least under that blog I don’t anticipate putting anything like the stuff I do here up. Maybe under a separate one? We’ll see.

But my point in this shpiel is when I come back I want to make a point of making time for this, and myself on my off time. Commission slots will be pretty limited compared to previous openings. I’m currently getting together some stuff as examples since I’ve been playing more in Clip and such.

Hey everybody!

So, I think this is a bit of a long time coming, but I'm going to hand out refunds for the last of my commissions in December. As much as I would love to finish them, with trying to get a job and still being in a post-graduation fog (and trying to truly do things for myself for the first time in like 4 ish years), I know that it really isn't going to happen in a timely manner and it would feel so crappy to keep you guys waiting any longer.

I still plan on being active here and taking more commissions in the future. For now, I do just keep to step away from stuff for a while and just focus on writing fanfiction and drawing a crap ton of fan art to make myself happy. That and dealing with interview tests and trying to get a job which is very time-consuming.

I'll be contacting everyone within the next few days - or if I owe you a commission or sending you a piece of art through the mail feel free to contact me first if you see this before I contact you myself. I'm just waiting on some money to come in and then I'll start sending out refunds.

On that note as well, I'm unable to get to a post office and won't be able to send out any art at this time. If the people who were wanting their art would still like it in the future, I can keep in touch as to when I get some packaging and can actively get to a post office - it's not easy when you have to walk everywhere.

Anyways! Look out for notes coming in the next while and a huge totally self-indulgent fan art dump most likely.
