Methodological Solipsism
General | Posted 4 months agoIt's a bit of a mouthful, but methodological solipsism is my bread and butter. You may have heard of solipsism before (believing that you're the only thing that exists), but this is not that.
If you've got a couple minutes to read, hear me out.
If you run everything in your reality through the filter of empiricism (e.g. the scientific method), eventually you'll find that not even primary sources can substitute firsthand experience. You (a primary source) may tell me that you are a real person with real experiences, but I have to believe that you're telling me the truth. That belief is a choice that you don't have a say in, and that particular belief would stand quite shakily on the fact that your mind incorrectly fabricates parts of your memories whenever you attempt recall them. Of course, I do believe such things - albeit cautiously, because it would be impossible to live and make decisions if I didn't play along. Most people do this automatically and take this for granted. With hate groups on the rise and society as it is right now, I think we should be more aware of this process.
Belief often asserts as true that which you do not have sufficient evidence for, and even if you do have evidence, you will never have access to 100% of the information contained within reality. In fact, your brain filters out more than 99% and operates on heuristic programming instead. A belief may sometimes be a close reflection of the truth, but belief =/= truth. There is only one thing that does not require belief to know, and that is that I feel like I exist. But that isn't even an assertion that I exist… I just feel my consciousness happening and all that comes with that - enough to allow myself to believe that "I am." But beyond me, in asserting that I exist, you'd have to believe me when I say that (or not). I'd certainly prefer you believe I'm a "real" person, but how do you know I'm not an AI? How do you "know" anything?
Solipsism as a belief (where one believes that only they exist) feels almost like a fugue state I see some people get into during depressive episodes and such. It's exclusionary, isolating, and overall not too great for one's mental health. Methodological solipsism on the other hand shuts most forms of belief down and puts you in the driver's seat. It is not a belief system nor a philosophy - it's a process based on empiricism and skepticism. It encourages you to be perceptive. The key thing to understand is that I'm not saying I'm the only thing that exists, nor am I saying that you do not exist or that I do not or should not engage in belief. What I'm saying is that I can only truly know myself, and all the other information I'm receiving from the thing I call "reality" is an incomplete picture that must be finished with varying measures of belief.
We can't even prove that reality is objectively "real." What does that even mean? If this is a simulation, we have no way of measuring the simulator from within, and even if we did, we'd have to believe the measurement tools. Everything just "is" and that's the best we can do right now. With that understanding, I can gauge just how much belief I'm comfortable with putting towards any given idea, and I am willing to allow such beliefs to be proven wrong upon receiving new or conflicting information.
More often than not, I would rather decline most forms of belief beyond the basics and simply keep my eyes and ears open; to forever remain a student of this universe. Some find it easy to see this as crippling, but it's not. This lays the foundation of how I see the world; it is not an endpoint. And as a result, I am impervious to religion, cults, and anything that bases its belief system on first- or secondhand experiences written down and retranslated hundreds of times over thousands of years - dogma. You can tell me that world works a certain way, that the universe is inherently good or that humans need a code of laws to govern their morality, but good and evil are entirely relative, based on little more than individual preference. You could dismiss that as a form of nihilism (and therefore another belief) but all of the alternatives can be dismissed just easily. Meaning, value, morality, and etc. are all shaped by the preferences of the observer. I choose not to pass judgement, simply see all that is, and respond to it if I desire.
In response to this, some have brought up the idea that since we seem to be like each other in form and function, it's reasonable to believe that others exist outside ourselves and therefore my point is moot. I agree, it is quite reasonable to believe that. I can't see inside your head so "believe" will always be the key word here until telepathy is invented. Perceiving precisely where belief lies and exercising the right to engage in or withdraw such beliefs is the point of methodological solipsism.
I've posted this in other places but I figured I'd share it with y'all too ^^

General | Posted a year agoAvailable Now: Starlight Telepath
General | Posted a year agoToday, September 19th, 2024, I released my new album "Starlight Telepath." Listen to it here: https://linktr.ee/baumarius
Starlight Telepath is my fifteenth album and my thirteenth as Baumarius, featuring Soundsgate Orchestra (via Musiversal), Italian violinist Lucia La Rezza, Argentinian opera singer Mailén Blanco Arriola, and more. The music speaks of the adventures my friends and I will go on, the nature of conscious existence, and reflections on my life as a therian, synesthete, and cult survivor.
The release of this album nine years after the cult's supposed end-of-the-world date symbolizes my success, the power of self-expression, and the value of genuine relationships and community. I couldn't have made it to this point without the friends I made by sharing my music and artwork online. I hope that these songs enrich your life.
Purchasing the album on Bandcamp will give you access to a bonus track upon release - the original version of "The Wolf That Fell From Baumar," which was created by Aktaion ("Action") and given to me as a gift.
Several of these tracks will appear on Tenera, a video game I’m developing. I’ll have more details on that as development progresses.
Winners from the raffle were chosen on the release stream last night, which was very successful. I will email them individually later today or tomorrow with prize info.
Cheers,
Bau

One week remains...
General | Posted a year agoThere's just one week left until the raffle ends and Starlight Telepath comes out. I hope you're as excited as I am! While we wait for the full release, would you do me a favor and share it on your socials and/or with your friends?
The success of this album and my career as a composer hinges upon my music's visibility. It may not seem like much, but word of mouth is the most powerful and effective driver of visibility in music and art. The first video from my recent live session, for example, is still sitting at ~100 views: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ozhSVg8HJFc
Of course, if it's not compelling enough to share, I get it... Not everything jives with people that way. But finding that success would allow me to give back to our community and mean that I'd be able to do much more with my art and music, as well as afford me more time to rest when I'm producing. Even if there's only one person you know who might enjoy my music, your assistance is much appreciated. Every single one of you matters to me ^^
Therians and furries are welcome to use my music in their creations, videos, and etc. so long as credit is given. If your content gets flagged, let me know so I can whitelist it.

Starlight Telepath Uploaded & Ready!
General | Posted a year agoI need help...
General | Posted a year ago*sigh* Hi all! So, um... I need help.
I made it to the end of August. I finished recording Starlight Telepath with the orchestra. Everything else is finalized except Into The Expanse, which will take me just a few more hours. Then all I need to do is upload it to streaming services and I'll be all set.
If only it were that easy...
I also need to make $400 more by tomorrow (a typical Uber day for me) for health insurance and taxes, $773 for whenever Musiversal gets the video files from the performance to me (probably Monday or Tuesday), and $1367 for my car insurance and car payment on September 8th. I have enough for rent right now, but I have much more work to do. And I'd totally be able to do it... But I've been driving 40+ hours a week for a year and a half, and I've been going really hard the past two months to make all this happen while struggling with sleep deprivation from acid reflux, caffeine withdrawal (I quit 1 month ago), an IBS-like issue of yet-unknown import, and a totally bonkers sleep schedule.
I've been trying to get all of that under control, but I'm struggling. And now... It feels like I have severe carpal tunnel from driving so much, and lifting my arms to steer my car has become immensely difficult. They feel weak. I don't know what's wrong but this is most probably an occupational injury. Uber drivers don't get workers comp and that injury is amplified by my phone and computer use. I probably shouldn't drive for a long while. To be honest, I've been having trouble even writing this.
I feel like I can't ask for more of y'all, but if you want to see this happen, please consider donating to my Ko-Fi, buying the album, or sharing this. Musicians don't typically get paid through commissions for produced works, but buying my music is, in a way, doing just that. And if you need me to pay you back for anything, we can discuss that. I'm just at the end of my rope right now and this is my last option...
As a way of saying thank you to everyone who has pitched in... Here is The Promise, fully orchestrated. It's about a promise of friendship...to stand and fight together, regardless of what may come: https://on.soundcloud.com/YsMHmT3rDUaTrJXQA
Thank you.

Orchestra steam is live!
General | Posted a year agoGoing live!
Timing details from my previous journal:
On Monday, August 26th from 9-11 AM EST, 3 tracks from my upcoming album Starlight Telepath will be recorded by Soundsgate Orchestra in Prague, Czechia at Smecky Studios. This will be the first time a therian/otherkin musician will have recorded with an orchestra (as far as I know), and the whole recording session will be filmed and streamed live on Twitch & YouTube. The stream is starting now and will go something like this:
7-8:30 AM - Pre-session warmup
8:30-9 AM - Sound check
9-11 AM - Recording session
https://www.twitch.tv/baumarius
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NoaufzYz3kw

If you would be so kind as to invite everyone you know who might enjoy this kind of music or event... I will be in your debt. I can't wait to show you all what I've been working on these past two years. Why I've been grinding so hard to make this happen, working 80+ hour weeks to see this through. And even with that, I've received over $13k from fans just to make this work. Once, my heart was shut away, locked in an enigma, hidden from all eyes. This is a piece of it. I give it to you freely. True love...passion...transcends space and time. I hope that we can be friends, or at least that I can give you an experience you'll never forget. This will not happen twice. I hope I'll see you there!

Met with the orchestra producers!
General | Posted a year agoI met with the orchestra producers today to go over some final score revisions and meet the conductor. It went very well. Recording on Monday!
I've been worried for a long time that my music might be too hard for them to play or that it might not be "marketable" for movies and that most producers hear it and go "...Okay?" There was this one Uber rider from LA who does film stuff and went, "This sounds really well produced, but..." and then didn't finish his sentence. That's the vibe I've gotten with a lot of tracks over the years... But this was different. Now everyone's like, "Is this for a movie?! :OOO" XD
I feel a lot more confident now, anyhow. I feel like I can do this.
Watch the orchestra record live on Twitch this Monday at 7-11 AM EST: https://twitch.tv/baumarius
It's gonna go like...
7 AM EST - start
8:30-9 AM - sound check
9-11 AM - orchestra recording session
If they can get the files to me right at the end I'll produce the tracks on stream too, but that will likely be a next day thing.

Starlight Telepath Update
General | Posted a year agoThe last few weeks have been exhausting in many ways and my top patrons have prescribed me rest so that I don't hurt myself on the road or otherwise. I have been doing my best to take it easy and minimize the amount of work I must do by prioritizing Premier rides with Uber on weekdays (since they're infrequent on weekends) - this has lowered my weekly hours by ~10 for the same pay. But I am still tired. I will probably be short for the orchestra recording session when that comes on August 26th. By how much, I'm not entirely sure, but I will need to ensure that my basic expenses are covered before I can pay them.
What does this mean for Starlight Telepath? Well, according to Musiversal, I can pay the second half of the recording fee whenever I'm able - they'll just hold all deliverables until I do. The orchestra session stream will still happen that day regardless - it will be a one of a kind experience and an in-depth look into modern music production for anyone interested, as well as the first time an openly therian composer has ever recorded with an orchestra. The whole thing will be filmed on video. A lot of people ask me if I'm actually going to Prague to record with them - I will be advising them and viewing remotely with everyone else.
So, I've mentioned certain deadlines before. I previously planned to upload the album 3 weeks before release (on 8/29) so that it has a chance at being featured in editorial playlists on Spotify. But if I can't upload the album on or before that date, it probably won't hurt my chances of getting tracks placed in film or video games (which is my main priority from a business standpoint). I will still have the video recordings to use for music videos, which will probably do much more for me than Spotify ever will. Spotify has never featured my music before and despite the significant increase in the production quality of my music with this album, I have no reason to believe that they will. Worst case scenario, if I can't pay until the middle of September, I can still upload the album to be ready for the 19th.
I drastically underestimated how much this project would require of me when I announced it; even moving it back 5 months was cutting it close with all the unexpected surprises that met me this year. I am overextended, exhausted, and the sheer amount of work I've put on myself has become a point of contention in my relationships. I have been horrible at managing myself and my ambitions. But I don't want to postpone this again, I probably don't need to, and I probably shouldn't given the fact that I've already sent out a press release with a concrete release date to 30+ outlets. Thankfully, the extra 5 months has given me ample time to refine it to perfection. I have never been so satisfied with my music - I can listen through the album from start to finish without feeling like anything is out of place or like any of the motifs are stale or uninspired. I know there's no such thing as perfect, but close enough is good enough for me.
Going forward... I will still produce new music and artwork after this, but not in this capacity. I do not intend to begin a new musical project or start my work on Tenera until my debt is paid off and I'm able to minimize my expenses. That means paying off my car and the rest of my debt, finding a cheaper apartment to live in with dedicated parking (which costs me way too much right now), and to be honest... taking a long break from working 80+ hours a week like I have been for the past 5+ years. I work full time for Uber and then put in full time hours into my projects at home. I want to live, explore Pittsburgh, and meet new furry and therian friends. I can't be there for that if I'm grinding myself into the ground like I have been.
While this is a sore topic for some, please understand that many of the reasons I started pushing myself so hard were valid - it helped me escape a toxic relationship and get on my feet here in Pittsburgh, and will likely set me up for success for years to come. I also struggle with C-PTSD, which I've previously found relief from by working and keeping my mind engaged. I usually feel out of place if I'm not actively trying to solve something, and I don't regret how hard I've worked for that reason. But...I'm free now and I want to exercise that freedom and overcome my PTSD in a healthy way. I will not be imprisoned by my own creative ambitions any longer. When I do inevitably start work on my next project - which will not happen until 2026 at least - it will be in a capacity that is respectful of my health and general well-being, respectful of everyone else involved, with a reasonable, flexible amount of time to reach objectives. There is no need to hustle myself into oblivion.
For now, I just need to finish this. I'm in the final stretch - I only have about 2-3 weeks of work left. Once the album's out, I'll be going camping for a week to reset. I'm sorry for any undue stress I may have caused y'all.
Thanks for listening.

Live Orchestra Stream!
General | Posted a year agoThey gave me the green light. On August 26th, I will be streaming the entire 2-hour recording session on Twitch, with Soundsgate Orchestra in Prague (via Musiversal). We are recording 3 tracks from my upcoming album Starlight Telepath, including "Into The Expanse," "The Promise," and "Empress of Karugis." I won't be there in person but will be advising and observing remotely. It will take place on Monday, August 26th, likely in the morning EST. I'll update y'all with more details as I get them.
During the session I will not be able to respond to chat via voice, but myself and Indigo Jackal will be moderating it. I will be assembling each track as soon as I receive the files. I hope to see you there!
Follow me on Twitch so you don't miss it: https://www.twitch.tv/baumarius
