Weird Icons
Posted 5 years agoRight, I've banged my head against the desk about this for long enough and its time to Ask The Audience.
I posted my first story - Schools Out - on here nine years ago. How the time flies! And when I uploaded the icon for it a little while later, it was weird: it displayed too small in some menus, which was annoying because I'd written some tags on it for viewers information (so they'd know what they were reading before they opened it) and the compressed size made it hard to read.
Well, after almost a decade - I've lived with this problem for nine years - I posted another story relating to that ancient one. Now is the time to fix that icon, said I! So I tried reuploading it - I still had it somewhere - and bam, just like that... Schools Out doesnt seem to have an icon at all.
Wonderful!
So my question to you, O Readers, O Followers: ...anyone know why? I dont want to delete and reupload the whole post, I just want to fix the icon. Anyone have any thoughts? Anyone run into a similar problem ever, and what made it go away? :)

How do you edit a submission?
Posted 5 years agoAbout to head off to work, rhino suited and booted and ready for another day of shoeleather and humiliation. Bah. But! Before I head out, here's a question for you all.
I swear it used to be possible to upload an updated file to a submission? So if you noticed an error you could fix the word doc and reupload it? Just annoyingly noticed that my hangtrucking antelope momentarily turns into a wolf and back again, a typo thats a relic of my writing process, and I dutifully corrected the doc on my computor and now I cant find the button to upload a newer file on the page, what with FA's new layout...
Any thoughts?

A hot, fun, blazing trainwreck
Posted 6 years agoI've been working on a new story. And unfortunately, Im not going to finish it.
As I said to a correspondant recently:
Gawd this story was a fcking disaster
A hot disaster.
But a disaster none the less.
Sometimes when I post stories, for the last few I've said something along the lines of "It went off the rails". Meaning that it didnt go where I intended, but was still finished, and was still a fun read. But *this* story, this fcking disaster, this hot disaster, has not only gone off the rails, but has hit a tree and exploded. Burning fragments litter the landscape, hunky rescue workers are carrying grateful people away in fireman's lifts to safety, and a member of parliament is being grilled on the news about budget cuts to the railway infrastructure.
I've written this story into the ground and I'm very much ready to move on. It is the second half of a single scene and its twenty pages. I was going to write the first half of the scene to round it out but I can't even bring myself to do that. To be clear, I think what is written is pretty good, but I'm looking at the plan for the whole story and wow, what the hell was I thinking. I bit off *faaarrr* too much.
Basically I went wrong twice. First: I did my usual thing, which is usually very successful, of Starting In The Middle. In the past, even when I've started at the beginning, that has often become the middle - either that or I've quickly jumped forwards. But this time the small scene I started with escalated into a mini-story all of its own, the list of prerequisites required to finish it ballooned, and here we are, with the train exploded. The second way I went wrong was to make my point of view character too much of a spectator. It reads quite interestingly still, I think, but I've had my fill of writing from this point of view and I've written too much to start over. So just going to quickly proofread what I've already got, and post it as is, maybe even to Scraps.
So, coming soon! A hot fun piece of a story. It even opens In Medias Res. I might even post another journal entry with a plot summary of what might have been, depending. This was fun! But I'm drawing a line under it. Next time, I'll aim for something a little shorter!

Update!
Posted 6 years agoHello everyone! I realised that my last and only journal posted here (7 years ago?! Where does the time go!) is along the lines of "I'm probably not posting anything ever again", and that hasnt been true for a very long time. So an update is in order!
I hope your 2019 goes splendidly.
A couple of people asked when/if Making the Cut Part 2 is coming, which is super flattering. Sorry to have kept everyone hanging, no pun intended! ("You clearly intended that pun." You're right. I did.) Part 2 is in the works. Basically, I started it, got massively stuck, couldnt figure out how to go on with it even though I knew what the rough outline was, then approaching Christmas I got another idea and thought, maybe a different story will help break my block on this one? And but so, Office Party Aftermath was begun instead. It was only supposed to take a few weeks and then "scope creep" occured and next thing OPA is 40 pages long and its February. But with that done and posted, at the moment I'm thinking that the next thing I'll work on will be Making the Cut Part 2. My submissions statistic page helpfuly tells me that I posted Part 1 seven months ago, holy fck, and Part 2 is only getting started really, but I plan to get back into it. Its not going to be ready soon. Sorry to have kept people waiting so long! I'm afraid you're going to have to wait a fair bit longer. But it hasnt been abandoned. So dont worry about the fact that I've posted something unrelated, MtCP2 is still on the cards.
