Hello, Dear Bunnycrumbles.
Posted 18 years agoWe're back. Which is to say, on Wednesday we got the voluntary bugout alert, and we bugged. Iiji and I spent the past two days with friends in Santa Monica, watching the news, mostly. Christ but it's a mess down here. Houses and businesses and lives destroyed.
We're lucky. Super lucky. Came back to my condo this afternoon and there wasn't a thing out of place. The firefighters managed to stop the fire less than a half mile away. Now it's burning merrily over the ridge towards Riverside and threatening to close down the 15. This crap isn't over for the state of California and it might not even be done with *us*, but for the moment we are back, we are safe and we're good.
Blessings upon you, each and every one, who have posted to my journal and Iiji's. I will get to individual responses if I can, but in the meantime I must post this. You're awesome, each and every one of you. Thank you.

Let me rephrase that.
Posted 18 years agoThe situation's a become little hairier than previously stated.
One ridge separates us from the main body of the fire, and the far side of said ridge is now on fire.
Eep.
Well, okie-doke. Iiji's already packed up, 'cept for a few odds and ends. I'll be packed up in less than a half hour. Then we wait.
You can smell it. Backlit against the twilight, the clouds of smoke are really very pretty. I saw no flames, but you could see the cast light on the smoke.
Volcanoes and earthquakes one place, earthquakes and fires in the other. Harrumph.
Thank you, everyone who wrote us. We're still fine, and with a little luck and goodness we'll be just fine, and all our neighbors too.
If not, well, there's always the insurance.

Posted 18 years agoHey folks,
Just to let everyone know, if you've been watching the news and are concerned about Mizz Iii and me, we're fine. The fires raging in SoCal are nowhere close to us (knock on wood....please forgive the pun!). We're fine, the puppies are fine. It's windy as hell, which is exciting and scary, but otherwise? All is fine.
Let's all send out positive waves to the emergency-response folks, the firefighters, pilots and EMTs that are out tonight helping people, and those who need the help. I saw the smoke; these blazes aren't ginormous, but they're close to many a populated area.

Posted 18 years agoTwice we've been given (that's
Iiji and I) wunnerful essperiences, in just as many days. First it was Sunday, spending the afternoon with
thorndraco,
syrinoth and the ever-bubbly
novadragon. Woman, we gotta nail down some talkin' time on our next visit! I feel like I didn't give you any of me, and that makes me feel like hammered crap. Oh but the absinthe was great, and so was the arting and talkage. Dudes, if you want to post that little character doodle I did, please feel free to do so. That's almost all the art I've done for ten days!! I owe Nova for another visit at LEAST. ;)Then it was last night, and our company were de fabbuluz
arsemaus and master of disguise
weazal! Much beer was drunk, art was shared and good times made.Hasn't been a bucketful of giggles, this past week and change. Good company turns all of that around. (And Iiji, if you're reading this, I don't mean you! You nut. You know what I'm referring too.)
Everybody bug Arsemaus to post some art! Fuckin' a, there's some beautiful stuffs in his sketchbook.
Well now.
Posted 18 years agoHere's a bunch of things, in no particular order, but all of necessity given my extended silence.
1. I live! Like that's a shock or something. And I'm doing alright. Last week was a turning point. I'm temporarily a free agent, so I am making the most of my newfound open schedule.
2. As some of you already know, the most fabulous
iijiis staying with me for the time being. She's on FA, her work deserves your attention because she ROCKS beyond all superlatives. So, go check her out, dammit! She's a dearheart, too, and has seen me through a rough two weeks. She thinks she's being a pest. Ha! She's a doll, and I'll miss her when she finally has to leave. The puppies will miss her and Morro, too.
3. New art soon, this I promise to you. I've got the time and the reason to get cracking.
4. Where did all you new Watchers come from? Mother of God, Bapu. How on Earth did I end up with so many new Watches?
5. I am slowly catching up on my correspondence.
6. Jumping Jesus on a Pogo Stick, do I have a lot of art to catch up with....oiy. Damn all of you people for being so productive!
More as I can manage it.
Wuv,
Berb

Posted 18 years agoHello one and all!
De Berb has landed safely in SoCal! I'm all ensconced and stuff in a nice little pad tucked away amongst eucalyptus trees, with a teeny yard for de pups. Is all good! I'm safe and sound. The puppies are fine as can be and enjoying 90 minutes of walking a day during the cool hours of early morning and at twilight. There's lots of cool places to stomp around these parts, plus beaches, birds, lizards and bats!!
New job is AWESOME POSSUM TO THE FUCKING MAX.
Moving to SoCal is going to count as one of the most important decisions I've ever made in my life.
It's been more than three weeks since I was last able to log on. Jeebus Cripes! I'm buried under a deluge of watches and comments. A thousand and one blessings on all of your heads, sweet peoples. I will get to posting again as soon as I can. That may be a while, just to warn you, since I'm still in the process of getting my place in order. Don't even have any art up on de walls yet!
My love and hugs to the whole bleedin' lot of you. I've missed FA and issa goot to be back.

Posted 18 years agoA great big shout-out to all those who posted regarding Robo Bonobo, and who faved the picture as well. The response to the last few images has blown me away. Ach but could I sweep you all up in me Berbish arms!! How I would hug theez.
I am just getting into the thick of preparing for my move. This will render me a lot less communicative than I'd prefer. I'll do what I can, but chances are, from this point on, Berbie's gonna be sporadic in his posting and comments. The world's pulling at me. Gotta go get ready.
Your words of encouragement and support really do brighten my day! FA's been a great source of egoboos lately. I am very, very appreciative of all you've said.
*hugstight*

In the X community Arf is....
Posted 18 years agoMuch to-in and fro-ing over art and artists, this morning. Some good stuff's being said. This subject's like a blue whale; it surfaces every now and again. The conflict between the limitations of the fandom (any fandom) and the folks who chafe at those leads versus those who don't has enough of a varied root system that I don't intend to explore it deeply. What you're about to read (should you choose to read it) comes from my own musings on the subject as a fringe member of the furry community and as a professional artist, a successful freelancer with a lotta years behind my belt.
I think most artist folks in any fandom are doing it for fun. Fun should always be a core element of an artist's life, but the difference between a professional and a fan is drive, nine times out of ten. There's no way to instill drive in someone, as much as you may want to. And to a certain extent, the desire to push a fellow artist is misplaced. It's their choice to make. Mind you, it hurts when you see folks who truly could make it if they tried, and you *want* them to succeed in the worst way....but they get to measure success on their own terms.
The primary danger of any fandom lies in the word "safety". It's the reason the vast majority of the top folks in any fandom don't have a hope of making it in the larger world. Fandom is a great big down pillow. It's comfortable, welcoming, safe. The bar is set much lower in a fandom. You don't have the All-Powerful Engines of Industry pushing the threshold for the betterment of the stockholders and the board members (with a few peanuts left over for the likes of you and me). As you feed the fandom's wants, you turn your eyes away from what the larger world demands. Your work suffers accordingly.
Now, this pathway exists in the professional world, too. It's a standard track in life. Mostly you get caught on it. It's not something you seek out. External pressures guide you there, and it's up to you to stay awake and aware. It's called "pigeonholing". Maybe you're good at landscapes, or painting faces, or logos, or whatever. Pigeonholing is a potential in any given division of the art market.
Fandom...any fandom...is one gigantic pigeonhole.
Here's the pattern, in a nutshell. Artist enters the fandom. This artist has potential, maybe a lot. Gets great feedback. Draws more. Skills improve. Gets still more praise. Finds likeminded artists, gets plugged into the community. Starts to feel good about their work, starts getting some confidence to shoot for the Professional World. Puts a book together and tries it. Catches a fist in the teeth. Retreats to fandom, licks wounds.
Here lies the pivotal moment that separates the person with fire from the ones who will stick with fandom. The professional world isn't a world full of sharks. I wouldn't have met some of my dearest friends were it not for my professional career. The point is, I did that track I just described, stewed for a bit, and came back swinging. And I made it. I'm no Michaelangelo, but I make an excellent income and I have life on my own terms.
Therein lies the choice, because if you want to make it in the professional world, you have to leave the nest, and that nest is Fandom.
There's nothing "wrong" with doing art for fun! Not a thing wrong with enjoying a fandom for what it has to offer: community, support, encouragement, friendships. But for an artist, it's easy for fandom to act as a set of blinders. It WILL cap your abilites. Any fandom has a popular look, usually copped from some source in the larger world, but the current tends to sweep the more imaginative people to the edges and promote those who best feed the desires of the masses. Follow that current and I guarantee the work you make won't get you jack in the commercial world. The bar just isn't set high enough.
The recipe for making it in the professional world is a simple one. Don't confuse "simple" with "easy"!! But it IS simple: work like hell on your skills and imagination. Go to museums and events, check out the work of those employed in the fields you want to plant yourself. THERE'S the mark you've got to hit. Work work work. No time for fan art, little time for friends and fun. That liesure time will come later, when you've established a foothold. You won't get that latitude in the beginning.
The people who make it in the professional world fight, and fight, and fight some more to make it. Talent isn't always the deciding factor. Stubbornness and timeliness swing much greater weight in this equation. I know. I'm not pulling this out of my ass. I've seen the truth of this so many times I've stopped counting.
Art's about love. Love can be strong as steel or fragile as a rose petal. The commercial world can crush that love. It's a very real danger. You need to think about it seriously if you want that gold ring. What I have, I have because I always saw myself as earning my keep through my art. That doesn't make me better or worse than anyone in "fandom". I made a choice.
I'll bring this full circle. Fandom is a place to grow and even flourish. It does nurture. It can also smother you. Like any good drug, it lulls you into thinking you're totally in control no matter how deep you sink. No part of your life should rule you. Let fandom move you along but, if your sights are aimed high, let it be a place you return to now and then, like the place where you grew up.
Don't let the politics, the hyperbole and most of all, the praise, rule you.

Posted 18 years agoHi ever' body.
Been quiet becuzz...
Went on trip: glomed onta good friends, ate too much, drank too much good beer (as in got fatter, not drunk), wandered around, and around, and stuff, got back, working like hell on a job thing, and I'm gonna be moving in July, Holy Christ in a Picnic Basket. Big Changes are taking place in Berbieland.
I frankly don't know what this will mean in the long *or* short term for my participation on FA. I will always draw anthro stuff of some sort or other; it's in me blood. I enjoy it too much. What it will look like, and when it'll be coming, that I can't say. This change of job and locale is gonna be a shake-up of enormous proportions in my teeny little world. I hope to continue with a trickle of posts over the summer. I have one enormously overdue image for a dear bean who's been far more patient than I deserve, plus promises I've yet to keep in other artish arenas, promises I may have to put off indefinitely.
That makes me a cad. It can't be helped. We'll see what I can manage by way of triage. :P
Thank you all, those who've commented and watched; from the bottom of my heart (and my love of bottoms), thank you. You've provided a shot in the arm, sometimes a straight mainline feed of good vibes and support in a time of emotional turmoil and psychic upheaval. I can't thank everyone individually as I'd like to. No time! But I can post something global, and I mean every word.
AH LUFF YU AWL!!
Let's got get weepy together!

The numbers don't corrispond to my gallery, nor my journal entries. Does it have something to do with the forums? Or is it measuring what other people link to from my User Page?
Please drop some learnin' on my ass. I need help procrastinating here.

Ayato's in need of some commissionin'. The man's super-talented. His work kicks fanny and then some. That alone isn't all that makes him worth hiring! He's just been through a harrowing experience. By commissioning him you'd be helping a good egg escape a very bad job and circumstances that recently have proven life-threatening.
Lend a hand, my budskis, lend a hand.

(Except I ain't gonna. *ptptptptptptpt*)

(Which I won't do. It stops with me, pal. Right here.)
1. I talk for my dogs. Barnum 's voice sounds kinda like Richard Nixon's if Richard Nixon were a surfer dude. Ellie Mae sounds like a little princess, because she IS a little princess, unless she's eating another dog, in which case she's a straight-up psycho mamma jamma.
2. When under acute pressure from work, I often cease to shower or shave 'til the job's done. I'd probably change this habit if I had a partner. Then again, maybe not. It isn't as if I'm running marathons every day.
3. I invent songs. Stupid ones, for the most part. They usually come about during the performance of domestic duties, such as cooking. The Chicken Boob Song, for instance, sprang to mind whilst I was cleaning a pair of chicken boobs. Bet you didn't see that coming, didja?
4. I sneeze in Japanese.
5. I do a damn good impression of a sheep, and a donkey's bray. I have scared the hell out of friends with my donkey impression. Mostly because it's loud and I didn't warn them beforehand.
6. I love big chairs, and I slouch my way into 'em. If they made a Papasan with decent back support, I'd live in the fucker.
The Berb officially disassociates himself with any of his creator's habits. He's got his own quirks and doesn't want them contaminated with hyuman cooties.

What the Hell.

Yet More Mitten Goodness.
Posted 19 years agoI have been remiss yet AGAIN, and let these gems go unheralded on FA. Cara Mitten's completed three more in our series of sketch-noodle-trades, and they're astounding.

At this rate, we might even have the sketchbook ready by Christmas of '07. Who knows? I'll keep folks updated.
More art to come, once I cease to be up until 3am painting for clients. :/

SHE DRAWED ME AND MADE ME LOOK BEAUTIFUL!!!
Go forth and pour your praise upon her, she deserves heaps of it for making me so pretty!
A quick rundown on Dragosaurian physigonomonomy:
We be funky. Dragosaurs are coated with a fine pelt of fur, like velvet to the touch (it's also available in crushed velour and chamois, corduroy, samite and silk). We come in a wide variety of fur colors, always differing from the color of the skin beneath (tastefully, natch). In my case, it's snow-white fur ('cuz I'm pure that way) and blue-black skin. (My hair's turqiose. Go figure.) Thing is, we love making art out of ourselves by shaving patterns into our fur. It's a two-for-one deal! Cool furry tats, plus two-tone color scheme, all with a razor and a skillful hairdresser. And since the fur grows back, we can persue different tat styles every month.
the_taxidermy gave me a truly breathtaking tat pattern, worthy of a very naughty Thai dancing queen. (Though I'm neither seventeen nor young, but I AM sweet.) Woman, you are a gem. Thank you so much!! I can hardly say that enough.
Go on, people! Give her your love!

Merry Crispness, and Thankies Too
Posted 19 years agoH'lo dere folks,
Arrh an' begorrah, smilin' down upon all ye germs and ailments, bustles and fizzin' o mie! Greetings and broad beams of happiness on this most festive of goyim holidays.
The Christmas gift that got me most came a little early. 'twas all the favorites and kind comments laid upon the last two pieces uploaded, the most recent of the collabs between Cara Mitten and meself. So many comments and faves, truth be, that there was no way I could respond to 'em all, as is my wont. Instead I say to you, my fine circle of watchers and friends, may the shiny brightness of the holiday vibe be upon you this Festivus season. May you be surrounded by friends, be they bound by love or blood. May you be stuffed with good food 'til you fall over and roll around the floor screaming. May you be lovingly buried in mounds of scrapped wrapping paper. And may all your worthiest wishes come true.
Love,
Berbie

For my Recent Posts, an Explanation.
Posted 19 years agoHey all!
Thank you very very much for the rousing positive response those last six posts have received. You'll see they've all got two sigs under 'em. Cara Mitten (Spacehyena on LJ) conspired with me to bring them to life.
One day during her visit I handed my sketchbook to her and said, "Here. Take my pen in your off-hand and draw some shapes. Nothing specific! Just a bunch of scribbles." She gave me a look, but did as requested. What you've seen uploaded to FA's the result of me going over those scribbles, hunting down shapes and rendering 'em to a fine golden brown. (At least one was beer-assisted. Mmmm....Portland. BEER.)
Cara and I have worked on other projects in the past as a team. We kick a lil' booty, y'awl. She's got a sensibility of critter design that's second to none. Her beasts have a soul. I admire the living fuck out of that gift. It was in the interest of shaking myself loose from my own boring, stolid habits that I recruited her hand and most excellent brainpan.
These beasts have been brought to you from the fertile soil of two demented beans. Enjoy, mien budfolks, enjoy!

I'm Back, he Said
Posted 19 years agoGreat buckets of blood, me hearties, I be back after 21 lovely days o' vacation. Shiver me timbers if'n I didn't 'ave FIVE HUNDRED BILLION submissions awaiting me, along an' bestride all manner o' Messaged Privates and things of suchlike nature, Arrh, fuckin' Jimmy Boy.
I apologise at least halfway for the silence, but the truth is I had a ball wif' my Spacehyena Sista (check her out on LJ, she rocks Knox Blox) . We split the lip of Vanity with the help of Turbine Divinity and his cadre of scalliwags in Portlandia. Much beer was swilled, Pommy scows taken, Ravens cawed, Eagles spotted, crows at the door, bowels unplugged and nostrils raped. I don't regret my vacation one widget! Nor am I afraid of the likes of THEE, Blind Pew, so deal me yer best afore I stowe my mizzenmast in yer poopdeck.
I shall eventually untangle me'self from this Pirate talk and upload some more junk, even and anon, yo. To all my buddies here on FA I give my greatest thanks one day before Thanksgiving. You guys make my life worth living. To all my fans who continue to give me their time and kudos, happy holidays to you, too. You rock my socks, each and every day.

FA Netiquette.
Posted 19 years agoBugger all.
Y'know, it's a cool and wonderful thing to get comments on your work. I love it, there isn't an artist I know who doesn't dig it, and sometimes all it takes is a kind word from a fan to get you back in tune with your muse. Watches and comments both are neat things. Crits are great, too. Crits are the one pipeline we have from the outside world. You don't need to be an artist to give someone a crit. All you need is a good eye and decent language skills. It doesn't hurt to have a little bit of kindness in your nature, either.
However....
Artists aren't mind-readers. Don't expect us to be, or you'll have nothing to look forward to but endless disappointment.
I see plenty of stuff on FA that I don't like. Same goes for ConceptArt.org, Drawn! and any other board I've ever looked at. That's my opinion. I'm entitled to it. Does that mean the artist whose work I don't care for needs to hear I don't like it?
No.
When you give someone a crit, you're trying to be helpful. Trust me, the most frustrating thing in the world is for a sketch or painting's meaning to not be clear. I'd rather *know* that than muddle on, thinking I'm doing fine. Don't like something? That's opinion. It's not a crit. It's not especially helpful, no more helpful in the end than being told something's great, with the added bonus of being annoying.
Opinion's a gut reaction. A crit's intellectual analysis. There's a big difference between the two.
It's true we aren't owed a reaction, just because we draw or paint. The inverse of that argument is also true: we don't owe you an ear for your opinion. If you don't have anything good to say, as the rabbit said, please....don't say anything at all.
C'mon, folks. Be nice to your fellow FA members. Don't be a Symhead.
FA+
