Anthrocon Viking illustration and leather badge commissions!
General | Posted 10 years agoHey everyone, in the spirit of AC's theme I'm offering simple runic leather badges for $10! These are diamond-shaped leather badges about 3" tall. I don't have any examples so they're very cheap and will be available for pickup at Anthrocon!

General | Posted 11 years agoI've been eyeing Patreon more and more recently as a means of some stable income. I've been trying to think of what I could do as incentives, though! I can do either incentives relating to either leatherwork or digital art. I wish I had a stream setup for my leather, since folks would probably be interested in that... but alas, that's just not a thing yet! Does anyone here use it as either a patron or an artist? If you're a patron, what sorts of incentives pique your interest, or do you mostly just care about supporting the artist? If you're an artist, what sorta of incentives do you offer, and which seem popular?

LED help for a cosplay!
General | Posted 11 years agoHas anyone used LEDs in their costume or another craft? I’m helping my partner make a Finn cosplay from Child of Light.

We have the hat and we need to add the light. I KNOW LED kits exist… I just want one LED wired to a battery that I can finagle into working. (Having an on/off switch would be good too.) But I dunno what to search for, because I’m not turning anything up. So if anyone has any ideas, let me know please?

Let's see. I have three shows coming up: Baltimore Comic-Con this weekend, which I'm very excited about, Northern VA Pagan Pride Day on September 27, and Shatterdome Con November 7-9. If you're in the MD or VA area, come check it out!
The first complete draft of the first Heartseeker novel, Lines of Loess and Ley, is done, and I've done internal editing on the first half or so. After that it goes to my beta readers for scrutiny, then it's off for real editing, and then... I dunno! I might do a crowdfunding campaign to raise some money for professional editing, e-book formatting, and cover art/chapter art. If you have any questions about the books you're welcome to ask. I'm also trying to settle on a final pen name. Generally I go by Heimdall Hammer-Hide, so I'm thinking H. H. Hide, or H. H. Hammer (sounds cooler).

If you missed buying something you liked at AC, just holler--I still have some of my stock left over and I'll be posting it up soon. August is going to be a bit of a slow month, and September may not be much better. So if anyone's been eyeing up my commissions, now's the time to pounce. When August rolls around I MIGHT be doing a sale, but I don't know yet!

First up is the Virginia Renaissance Fair! Everyone in the area should come check it out. It's a smallish fair but it's a lot of fun! This is a 5-weekend event starting May 10 and ending June 8. I'll have a whole tent with a ton of awesome stuff. Currently I have 20 pairs of bracers and 25 bags currently in progress, and a bunch of bottles too, as well as some new armor.
After that is Anthrocon starting July 3! I know a bunch of you guys go there, so come say hello! :) It'll be my first repeat con (ignoring Balticon of course, which I've been going to for over a decade, but I don't sell there) so I'm excited to see a lot of familiar faces.
Then things will be quiet for a little while as I work on larger commissions during the summer. The next con I go to will be Baltimore Comicon starting September 5. :) Then I don't have any plans for fall events, so feel free to make suggestions!

MAGfest!
General | Posted 12 years agoI've been working my fingers to the nubs ever since I got back from my vacation to prep stock for Magfest, and I have a lot of great stuff! I came up with a new style of bag I'm calling journeyman satchels (I won't have any at the con though--they were a commission) that I am SO excited to make more of them! If anyone will be at Magfest, swing by my table. I don't know where it'll be yet, though. Just somewhere in the dealer room. X) I have a painted black banner hanging from the front of my table that says "Screaming North Leatherwork."
I wish I were staying at the hotel, though. I live close enough to just stay at home and save the money... but there's so much cool stuff going on! I hope to meet awesome friends and play cool games... especially my friend Ben's caveman P&P game, where the players can only communicate via grunting and gestures. (I helped brainstorm it. I have no idea how complete it is--it's probably super vague but that's what I want.)
Thor will be with me so I'll be able to spend some time wandering and having fun though, so that's something. One of us will be at my table from noon-ish to midnight-ish everyday, depending on how we feel.

- Holiday season! Wow! Such sales! Very business!
- Shows! Magfest in early January, Katsucon in February, and FWA in March! Furthemore is also a possibility, but I don't know for sure yet. Come see me!
- Flood! My basement, which contains both my bedroom and workshop, was flooded when my hot water tank failed. It's already been dried out and damage was minimal, but it was super stressful (and my bedroom is currently without a floor, which isn't nice).
- Vacation! Resting and relaxing! Yay!
- I'm not in school! Hope you all did well on your finals! ;)

What do you make/craft?
Leather stuff, primarily armor and accessories! I haven't yet delved into the realm of leather clothing.
Professional, hobby, or in between?
Transitioning to professional. Business is better than ever!
Does your family/non-fur friends know about your craft?
Very much so! My parents were scared at first when I quit my very comfortable programming job to do this, but they were (and continue to be!) supportive.
How do you really feel about your work?
I think I'm getting better every day! Whenever I really push myself with a piece, I'm generally pleased with the results. Sometimes I'll make something and then sit back and think, "Holy shit, did I make that?!"
Do you ever get anxious trying something new?
Ohhhh hells yes, especially for larger things. Leather is expensive, so sinking large pieces into big, complicated new ideas is really daunting. x_x
What first got you interested in your craft?
You know, I don't honestly know what really did it. I've been exposed for a long time to skilled crafters at MDRF, so that's one influence for sure. I think what really turned the tide was when I saw a really lovely leather-bound book that a friend had made, and I thought... "Hey, I could do that!"
How dirty/disorganized is your workspace?
LOL. LOL. No matter how hard I try... it's always messy. XD But it's better than it used to be. I moved my workspace out of my bedroom and into a larger area with easier access to my supplies. So now I don't just toss things on the floor when I'm done with them... I can actually *gasp* put them away!
Have you ever had to clean crafting debris off of your bed? (Eraser shavings, stray fur fibers, etc)
The flesh side of leather can shed like a mofo. So there's been plenty of that from rolling hides out on my bed. XD
What's your favorite background noise when crafting?
Now that I work away from my computer, I actually often work in silence. Not because I particularly like it, but just because I have no easy way of getting the music into my ears. Before I just listen to my usual musics, especially ambient stuff like Wardruna, or the My Brother My Brother and Me podcast.
Who was/were your artistic inspiration?
I am constantly inspired by all the amazing crafters on deviantart. Azmal is first and foremost. His stuff always was impressive, but when I actually saw one of his suits of armor in person, I was completely blown away by the craftsmanship!

Hopefully fully supporting myself enough to live comfortably, have health insurance, etc. I want to focus on armor, but still provide smaller affordable items to people who can't afford (or don't want LOL) a big suit of armor!
If you could trade your skill in your craft for equal skill in another, would you? If so, which craft would you rather do?
Ugh, this is really hard. I am tempted to say yes; I would love to be a blacksmith, able to make weapons and metal armor. But ultimately I don't think I would do it, because I'm not in a good location for large-scale smithing. And selling weapons is trickier, legally, than selling leather stuff.
Which tends to come out better, your personal work or your work for others?
Honestly, they're about the same. I AGONIZE over commission work, though. Way more than I should. I have redone pieces from scratch because of some tiny thing that would probably never get noticed. I'm more loose and carefree with my personal stuff... and it still turns out well. :P
What's the biggest pitfall of your craft?
Probably the expenses and the bulkiness. Leather is expensive and takes up SO much space. At any given time I have 4-6 different weights (thicknesses) of leather for various projects, and I could even expand beyond that!
What's the best thing about your craft?

Almost certainly my Ringwyrm armor. ^_^ Despite its shortcomings, it was so so so successful, and I feel like a HUGE badass wearing it. However, I'm working on a commission now that might top it. It's a small item, but... when I look at it, it looks like a real, professional leatherworker made it. ;_;

Pricing and photography. To be an internet seller you need to take good pictures of your stuff, and I fail SO hardcore at this. I also price my stuff really erratically. It's often wayyy too low. And other business-side stuff, too--tax related stuff, figuring out my costs, etc.

To enter, all you have to do is reblog on Tumblr, follow/watch, or make a post/journal on a social media or art site. Each counts as one entry to the giveaway. So basically, if you reblog AND follow AND post a journal on deviantArt AND watch me on deviantArt AND post on Twitter, that counts as five entries, though posting to deviantArt five times only counts once. (But I appreciate your enthusiasm :P)

The prize? A piece of custom leatherwork made specifically for you, tailored to your exact specifications! I don’t even have a set prize I’m giving away--you get to pick what you’d like based on my prices, so you’re definitely getting something you’ll like. I make bracelets, bags, armor, bottles, collars, and more. Shipping costs are waived, and I ship worldwide.
The more people that share, the better the prize becomes. For every 10 shares, the prize increases by $1. So if there are 200 shares, the prize will be increased by $20, for a grand total of $35! That’s enough for a pair of extra-fancy cuffs or a leather bottle! :D
The prize starts at $15, which is already enough for a thick bracelet like this, but with your choice of symbol, border, and colors.
