Want free art? I want your old Pokemon cards!
General | Posted 11 years agoEmail me and we'll make a deal: brimercedesart[at]gmail.com
Condition or quantity doesn't matter. I'll be making things with them. Tell me what kinds of cards you have; I'll take any series, any type including those good-for-nothing Energy cards. Bonus points if you send me pictures of what you've got!
I'll give you $10 worth of art per ~100 cards you send me (you get more if there are rares/holos). I'll do anything: badges, character illustrations, reference sheets, icons, etc.

Sugar's "Thunder Cat" Incident Update
General | Posted 11 years agoIt's been 11 days since my cat Sugar chewed an electrical cord and since some of you were kind and concerned, here is an update! Just got back from Christmas weekend with family, so my writing may be a little hard to follow because I'm super tired. Anyway:
He's doing pretty good. The thing I was worried about the most (fluid in the lungs) seems to not have developed at all. His breathing rate has been normal and he's acting normally aside from preferring canned food over kibble due to his mouth burns. His burns look like they're healing nicely but may need another week or two to fully heal.
I did take him to the vet and they gave him an antibiotic shot that they said would last two weeks and three days of anti-inflammatory pills. I declined an expensive X-ray and monitored him for signs of fluid in the lungs at home. No red flags since then.
I left for the weekend and put him under the care of my roommate whom I asked to feed two cans of food a day Wednesday evening through Sunday evening (I don't think he actually got fed two cans of food a day since there were four cans missing from the pile instead of eight, but he had dry food available to eat). The area around Sugar's eyes is red and there's discharge and he's squinting. Still breathing normally but he's looking tired (although when he's up, he jumps and runs without difficulty). His ears are warm but I don't have a sure way to check for fever. I'm wondering if the antibiotics are wearing off and he developed some kind of infection. If his symptoms don't go away after a week or so, or gets worse, I may call the vet but this month has been really tight for cash and I can't take him every two weeks for a vet visit. All said and done, I'll be glad if all that comes of this is a mild infection. I will keep watching him!

Bri Mercedes Art @ Anthrocon 2015
General | Posted 11 years agoIt's official: I am a registered dealer at Anthrocon 2015 in Pittsburgh PA, table number F20! This will be my first time dealing at a convention.
What do you like to buy at furry conventions? I will definitely be bringing prints, copies of Bird Boy, and buttons as well as supplies for on-the-spot commissions (sketches, ACEOs, badges, and buttons). Also thinking about making some tails if I have the space, because they're so much fun!
I would love to make a small series of art to bring, featuring a bunch of cute animal characters. I am debating on whether to make greeting cards, small matted prints, stickers, or something new! I want to know what you want to see.
Excitement!!

My cat electrocuted himself- advice?
General | Posted 11 years agoI heard thumping around upstairs so I came up to investigate and found my cat Sugar convulsing next to a space heater. When I got close to him he jumped across the room (it reminded me of those cartoons when a character ricochets off stuff) and hid under a chair. He was no longer convulsing and just seemed nervous and wanted to be alone. We left him for a few minutes to calm down (by then I had discovered the source of his convulsions: a chewed wire near where his head had been when I discovered him). I picked him up later to examine him: he was nervous but let me carry him. The only physical damage I saw was a little red on or in his nose (I can't tell if the blood is from a burn or cut on his nose or if his nose bled from the inside) and of course his anal glands had released so his bottom was wet and stinky. I carried him downstairs to give him some of his favorite canned wet food and he seemed to perk right up after he ate. He is eating, drinking, behaving, and breathing normally at this time but I will keep observing him for signs of burns or internal damage.
My big question: Should I take Sugar to see a vet right away to make sure no damage has been done, or should I just keep tabs on him from home? I've never had a pet electrocute themselves before.
Needless to say I will be diligent about keeping him away from wires and will unplug unused appliances. This hasn't happened before and will see to the best of my ability that it doesn't happen again.

Closing Commissions/2015 Art 'Resolutions'
General | Posted 11 years agoIn 2015 I will be more focused on my professional and personal art rather than commissions- I found that while doing personal commissions is so fun and rewarding, I will be taking a break starting this holiday season- which would be now. I am finishing a few stray projects before the Christmas rush and that will be it.
If you're sad- don't worry! I anticipate opening for commissions sporadically and in limited numbers next year. That way I can block out time to complete them all at once rather than just having jobs trickle in like they did this year. Plus I'll be doing more cons.
So what WILL I be doing in 2015?
- Children's books: I have one children's book to illustrate for a client starting in January. After that I will be working on one or two children's books for myself.
- Personal Art/Prints/Portfolio: As a true creative spirit, making time to create personal art is very important to me mentally/spiritually. I'll be using this time to build up my portfolio and offer these pictures as prints/shirts/cards/etc.
- Conventions: Gotta get myself out there! I know I'll be at Anthrocon and FurTheMore in the artist alley or dealer's den. More info forthcoming!
Hope you guys are doing well!

Patreon Reward Changes - $5 Stream Art
General | Posted 11 years agoThis week I am rushing to get a client project done, so I won't be around much. HOWEVER, I will be streaming sketches on Wednesday at 12 noon EST for an hour or two for my Patreon supporters. Everyone is welcome to watch! https://www.picarto.tv/live/channel.....BriMercedesArt
THERE IS A PROPOSED UPDATE TO MY PATREON REWARDS. I want to give more people a chance to participate in the stream and I have a pretty good feel for the process now, so I am restructuring the reward tier. These rewards are discounted about 25% from my normal commission prices, so it's a really good deal! I am testing this structure with my current patrons this month and the changes will take permanent effect next month if all goes well.
$5 Pledge: headshot sketch
$10 Pledge: full body sketch
$15 Pledge: line art
$20 Pledge: line art+flat colors
$25 Pledge: line art+flat colors, shaded
$30 Pledge: lineless digital painting of one character. Examples: See the Lain and Solomon images in my gallery.
(Any one of these can be altered within reason- for example, you can substitute clean line art of a headshot in the place of a full body sketch for the same $10 pledge.)
Though these rewards aren't listed on my Patreon page yet, you can secure your spot in November's stream session by making your $5+ pledge today: http://www.patreon.com/BriMercedes

PA Ren Faire / What's up in Birdfoxland
General | Posted 11 years agoI'll be going to the PA ren faire with my family this Saturday afternoon! In the unlikely event that I finish Birdfox in time, I will be wearing it there. -crosses fingers- Let me know if you're going this Saturday so we can say hi!
Otherwise I have a ton to do- I have two active client projects, some emails to send, housework to do... I feel like I should not be this bogged and don't want to live that way, so I will be gradually paring down unnecessary things in my life (like taking only one job at a time and scheduling my work day, for example). There's a voice inside me that says I'm not cut out for freelance work and I'm trying to decide if that is a good or bad voice. Maybe I just have to re-prioritize and not say yes and make promises to everyone.
Did I mention I love you guys? Tell me something you're thankful for!

Husband's hospital visit
General | Posted 11 years agoI'm sitting in the hospital with my husband right now, he has some intestine issues. All art and projects will be put on hold as I don't know what's going to happen (it's my first time in a hospital and I'm kind of anxious, fortunately his parents have gone through this before). There is a small chance he will need surgery if his treatment isnt enough to clear it up.
Please pray for him and me and please pass this onto any prayer chains and local churches. Thanks

Furry social media questions
General | Posted 11 years agoSo, how common is it to have "furry" accounts on sites like Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter? Like to represent yourself in the fandom? Because it sounds fun and I would love to have somewhere to post a bunch of commentary, doodles, commission announcements, and fursuit photos without spamming those who want to see "pro freelance artist bizniss numbers" stuff. This sounds silly but I have a couple clients and publishing houses that follow me on Twitter and don't wanna clog up their feeds with irrelevant stuff (even though the companies are probably just following me just to get a follow back haha). And it might just be Instagram but I see 12 year olds with furry accounts that have thousands of followers... They like the specialty I guess.
Or should I discard professionalism and not care what people think?
What's your opinion? If you have such accounts, please share them (because I'll probably follow you)!

2015 Con Season Talk
General | Posted 11 years agoI want to start selling art at conventions and I need some recommendations on where to go (preferably central east coast for now but anywhere is good)! ALSO, if anyone has experience getting into artist alley/dealer's rooms, I would love to talk to you!
Additionally, for the non-artists, what do you like to see at conventions/what kind of art do you buy?
Possibilities:
DE Furbowl (not a traditional con but it's close, monthly, and I wanna meet people!)
Midwest FurFest
Megaplex
FurTheMore
Anthrocon
Non-fur cons:
CecilCon
Saikoucon

A Couple Hours with the Monoprice 19" Tablet Monitor
General | Posted 11 years agoI saw the UPS truck come down the road and stop at another house in our development, drop off a package, then drive away. It took me 10 minutes to realize my package had been delivered to the wrong address (after checking my tracking number online, which had said "DELIVERED" with nothing on my doorstep), and fortunately I had the guts to go knock on the neighbor's door. They gave me an (opened, they must have been curious) box with my tablet inside- fortunately the tablet's packaging was undisturbed. I got lucky. I emailed UPS support to report their wrongdoings. An honest mistake.
Anyway, off to the tablet itself! Setting up was easy despite all the mixed reviews: I simply had to uninstall the Wacom drivers, download & install the Monoprice drivers, and then plug it in: in that order. It did not come with a DVI cable or DVI to mini display port adapter (for my iMac) so fortunately I already had those. Something to consider. Once plugged in and set up properly in the Displays control panel, it worked wonderfully. The pen feels a little stiff so I have to press hard to get full pressure, but that can be adjusted for and the pen just may need to be broken in (and believe me, it will be). In the time I used it I got a few "blips" (like full-pressure blobby things) in the pen pressure but nothing that would interrupt my workflow. A concern in the reviews was the bad viewing angles, and that is definitely present. When calibrating the monitor it is SUPER important that you're looking at the monitor the exact way you'll be when drawing with it. But I figure that can be compromised for by 1) using premade color pallets and 2) just dragging your working image to a correctly calibrated monitor (my iMac screen for instance) every once in a while. The last thing that really makes me scratch my head is a little speck of dirt between the glass and LCD panel, which was a complaint that I found often in the reviews. WHY and HOW does that get past quality control? Anyway, it's in the upper right area of the screen outside of my work area, so it isn't worth complaining about but it's good to know if you decide to purchase one. A couple reviewers complained about the distance between the pen tip and the cursor, but I didn't find that to be a problem probably because I've used normal non-screen tablets all my digital art life.
Summary:
Pros:
PRICE
Functional
Good size
Pen feels good, comes with 4 extra nibs
Pressure sensitive
Zippy compared to Wacom tablets
Can be used purely as a regular tablet if you disable the screen (screen uses VGA or DVI cable while tablet digitizer uses a separate USB)
Cons:
Dirt particle in screen
Color accuracy and bad viewing angles
No DVI cable or Mac adapters- must be bought separately
Pen's buttons can only be mapped to left, right, and middle click
No hotkey buttons (but you were going to use your keyboard for hotkeys anyway)
No eraser on pen (but you weren't going to use that anyway)
Not perfect, but considering you can get five of these puppies for the price of one equivalent Cintiq, it's a steal. Would recommend because of its 30 day return policy as I get the feeling quality control isn't the best. Worth a shot if you're in need of a tablet upgrade and on a budget. I'm completely happy with my purchase.
With Love,
Birdfox Bri

Not perfect, but considering you can get five of these puppies for the price of one equivalent Cintiq, it's a steal. Would recommend because of its 30 day return policy as I get the feeling quality control isn't the best. Worth a shot if you're in need of a tablet upgrade and on a budget. I'm completely happy with my purchase.

New tablet today + Patreon Sketch Stream Sept. 17
General | Posted 11 years agoHey guys! I'm SO HAPPY to prematurely announce the arrival of a new tablet/Cintiq alternative I'm trying out, the Monoprice 19" Interactive Pen Display. It had mixed reviews but it was only $400 so I couldn't pass up giving it a go (30 day return policy, what could go wrong?). For reference, I paid $300 for my Intuos4 four years ago. I'll be doing a review once I get it up and running. Freelance jobs are starting to come in, so I figured it was time to upgrade my hardware. In the meantime I feel a little lousy- the anticipation is cooperating with an upset stomach (nerves or weird food or stomach bug, can't tell) to make for a long afternoon. Such is life. :)
I'd also like to remind everyone that I'm doing monthly livestream sketch commissions through my Patreon page ( http://patreon.com/BriMercedes ). These will take place on Sept. 17 at noon at my Furstre.am channel ( https://furstre.am/stream/Birdfox ). The deadline to pledge for inclusion in this month's stream has passed, BUT if you make your pledge before the end of September you'll be able to get in on October's monthly stream! This is a super cost effective way of commissioning me for simple illustrations, so get in while you can! Feel free to stop by the stream on the 17th to see exactly what you're getting for your pledge. A $15 pledge gets you a monochrome single character, while a $20 pledge gets you a colored single character (and ALL patrons get 20% off commissions)!
Thanks for looking!

What kind of T-shirts would you wear?
General | Posted 11 years agoI was approved as an artist over at InksterInc!
So.... What kind of T-shirts would you love to wear?
Pokemon? Games? Furry jokes? Species-specificities? (I'm working on an "indecisive gryphon" design) Encouraging words? Pretty flowers? Adorable kittens?
SPILL YOUR BEANS (or candy corns if you like those better)!!
