Nice to see you all again! Just popping back in to get you informed of my whereabouts and where you can go in order to continue to follow my work.
As you know from my previous journal, I will no longer be doing any sort of drawing/illustration anymore. I like music and that's what I'll be doing from now on.
I am creating a cartoon band called Invisible Minds. The members of my band are my characters Zack, Raff and a third Panda guy I am developing with
Kryat just for the occasion. Kryat will also be the one making the band's art. (Go watch him!)
Right now, I am building my studio and it still might take a while before its done and I can start the recording process of our first album. But just in case you wanna be there when the first songs come out, here's where to find and connect with us!

Updates and New Species Coming Up!

I am writing this journal for two reasons. 1- to update you all on the status of the list, and 2- To give you the heads up on what is to come in the very near future! First, the list:
It goes well. Now that I apparently have cleared the most difficult parts of it, the next drawings should probably be coming out faster (I hope). I should be done with everything around March, if not sooner! (yes, I am feeling very optimistic about it at the moment)
As for item number two, it is as the title says. I am going to launch a new species into the fandom! I had the first idea for them while taking a shower about 4 days ago, and ever since then it has consumed my mind and thoughts as a whole. I did some pre-visualization sketches of them and so far they look pretty and awesome! I won't release any images as of now because I still believe their appearance is going to suffer many changes before they reach the final and definitive look. I really wish I could share more about this with you all, but it is all on the very first stages of production and I don't wanna risk anyone ripping the idea from me and developing something similar before i can release it. All I can say is that i am very excited about this idea and that the species are going to be feline in nature! So, feline lovers, watch out!
I guess that's all for now. Going to get back to my drawings.

It seems I'm around again!

I've promised that I've been back sooner, but people from all around my family and friends started to show up for christmas, things got really crowded here at home during the past few days. And although I said there would be no excuses for not working on that gigantic sketch list, I think you will forgive me for wasting my time by indulging myself on Steam's holiday sales. They are simply impossible to resist! If you have Steam, you know what I mean!
Now everything should be peaceful again with the exception of Christmas Eve, Christmas itself and the New Year day. So with the exception of those days, you should expect me to be working on the list during most of my free time. I would like to say full-time, but I will be traveling with my family during my vacation and being at the hotel the whole time would feel like a waste, even though it would be for drawing all this stuff for you guys (which is always big pleasure for me, by the way)!
I think that's all, just keeping you guys posted on recent and future events.
Merry Christmas y'all! And have a real nice holiday!

Extended Hiatus

Some of my final grades have already come out and I failed one of my exams... There's still a chance for me to redeem that bad grade by doing an extra exam at the 15th of December. But there's a catch: this exam will contain everything that was given in the whole year in that particular subject, plus the fact that i gotta manage to take 6 + what's left for me to have succeeded in my last exam. Meaning I have to take at least a 7 out 10 in this one and according to my grades, I've learned almost nothing this semester. Gotta sweat until then!
So... basically there will be nothing new until the 15th of December. Sorry. But after that it will all be over!

Posted 14 years agoBefore anything else, I would like to take some time to say 'Thank You!', thank you all! I would never have expected the level of support I got from you guys in my last journal! I love you all so much! What I heard on those comments gave art a new meaning in my life. I guess I was so worried about using art as a mere tool to get things out of my head that I completely forgot its true meaning and purpose: Expression - A meaning I had completely distorted in my head. After reading what you have written, it got me thinking, and i've spent these last few days meditating on the matter. What I realized in the end was that I was just being a jerk with myself. Even though I am improving, somehow I refused to believe it. Looking back I see what a long way I came to get where i am now, why quit? And besides, I deserve better from me. I realize that at some point on the future I'll probably feel down and beaten once again, but as of now I'm glad to be back to my old self once again.
So thank you all once again. You guys are very dear to me heart!

Giving up
Posted 14 years agoOkay, here I go! if you don't what to know about all the emo stuff going on inside my head at the moment, just close this tab and go read something else. Otherwise, you're welcome to stay and listen. Your opinion on the matter would be much appreciated as well.
After all the things that happened yesterday, I felt like I had to talk about it in a journal and get this feeling out of my chest. This kind of journal is great for one reason: They allow you to put things into perspective and to think more clearly about what's going on with yourself. Who knows, maybe I'll even feel a lot better about myself after i finish writing this.
Yesterday I gave everything I had to paint that sketch to the best of my ability. I guess I can say I almost traded my soul for it, and it didn't even got close to what I had pictured in my head. I don't recall sucking so much ass like this when it came to painting… Anyway, all I know is that as soon as the painting was done, the only thought running through my head was: "Jake, you suck really bad!!! Why do you even try to be good at something you will never achieve in your lifetime?" I look at other artists that I admire like Strype, Carlos Cabrera, Shadow Umbre and others - And all I can think about is how awesome their art looks and just how easily they seem to paint it all. I realize of course that there's a lot of work and effort put behind each of their masterpieces. But still… they always seem to know what they're doing, what tool to use and where and how. Many times I tried to do as they do, only to end up in deep frustration.
After finishing the painting yesterday, I was completely depleted. The thought of giving up art completely even crossed my mind. If it wasn't for the results that I have been observing in my recent sketches, I think that I would just get rid of the current sketch list and close up shop for life. I've never gave up a single battle in my life. If its up to me, I fight to the death! And i don't intend to walk away from this one either! But it is all so depleting and frustrating… Every time I attempt to advance my skills, the objective seems ever so far away…
I don't wanna do it for fame, nor for money or anything of the kind. All I want is to express myself, what I feel inside. Share with the world all the wonders I have locked up in my head and live with you all a most wonderful experience! But what is meant to be a beautifully pleasant experience feels like a burden in reality. Why is it so hard to bring my vision into the physical world? To create an image that inspires a feeling of awe in anyone that see it? Why? I must be missing something, because I feel the potential inside me. I know that I can do so much more. But the means to harness that power seem to constantly escape my grasp every time it appears to be in range and achievable.
Should I become a mindless drawing zombie that just goes on tracing random figures on paper without any real purpose? Should I give up visual arts entirely? Maybe if I try just once more, will I be able to discover the secret behind using my creative power? Or will it just become another frustrating experience?
Those of you who talk to me regularly, must certainly be taking me for a complete stranger right now. I am always in a good mood, cheerful and constantly bearing good news about all positive aspects of life. Well, I haven't lost my touch just yet. Just having a really hard time getting my stuff to look incredible. I will continue my journey, standing up after every knockdown, until the end of the road and into infinity.
I apologize for the long journal, Normally i prefer to keep them shorter, but I really needed to get this feeling out. If any of you, my dearest friends, have anything to share, your words would be more than welcome in this time of need.

STUDIO 0 - The Beginning

Short version of my weekend: Bought some new stuff and kicked some ass at Space Marines.
Long version: Well, as you know I am not only a visual artist, but also a musician. It has been some time since I had the desire and impulse to record a music album, but gave up the idea for not being able to find people to play with me in a band. Later I realized that having a band would just get the best of me, as i wouldn't be able to find time for all the practice sessions and meetings. So I sadly had to leave the whole idea behind...
4 years later, I had the urge to start composing again. I got myself a MAC with Logic Pro and started my own musical project called "A Dark and Shiny Future". Three songs were made in total: A Tale of Time, Awakening and The Writer. Although I was realizing my dream of recording my own album, I wasn't happy with it. The sound samples I was recording and the overall quality of the song weren't exactly as I had in mind. And they sure didn't sound professional. So once again I left the whole thing behind.
Talking to a friend the other day, I realized that it wasn't my lack of skill that was causing the songs to sound amateurish. I was actually using the wrong equipment and I lacked an audio interface! And then he also gave me an excellent idea: "Since you want to make a name behind a band, why don't you create a cartoon band just like the Gorillaz? That whole band is just one guy!" At that time, I was enlightened!
So here's what's going to happen to my music: I am going to create a band of anthropomorphic animals (or furries if you prefer). And for that purpose I am building my own personal recording studio with real studio equipment. So far the studio have:
-1 Electric guitar
-1 Bass guitar
-1 Yamaha MOTIF XS8
-1 Yamaha MOTIF Rack -ES
-1 Audix VX5 condenser microphone
-1 Roland DR-50 dynamic microphone
-1 Fast Track Pro audio interface
-2 HR-824 MK2 active monitors (THX certified)
-1 Mac computer with Logic 9 installed.
With the exception of the active monitors, all the other equipment can be mounted into my current recording room and be put to immediate use. I have tested most of it and it seems that my friend was right, I was only using the wrong equipment! I can't wait to start recording!!! Just so you know, all my previously released songs have been renamed to become demos as they will be recorded again for the real album. The songs will not only be upgraded to a higher quality version of themselves but will also receive some rearrangements in order to make them sound more complete.

Enough Chat!
Posted 14 years agoAlthough my new schedule has been working well so far, during the past four days I haven't been able to fulfill it to the point where I get my drawing time. Looking back at what I did on those days, I realized that all my drawing time had been wasted on MSN!
I usually like to stay online and chat with my buddies as I fight my way across my daily duties, but unfortunately it seems that this is being a big hindrance to my dreams and objectives. I've currently got 4 projects running at the moment: The X-treme Artist list, the request/trade list, my Living Adventures at YouTube and my music album. That and Uni+work. (Don't say I'm overdoing it, because this is how I like it and I am fairly comfortable with it).
Basically I am stepping away from all chat clients until I am comfortable enough to resume.

Where have the fetishes gone?
Posted 14 years agoThe short version: I have no idea what's happening. If you don't know yet, I have (or had) a fetish for macro/macro/paws. And just recently I've been noticing that those images don't have any special effect on me anymore. I still enjoy the art and like them, but just the way i like any other picture. Its like i never had a fetish for those things ever! What the hell? Can someone explain what is going on here? Because I sure can't. I certainly didn't exchange these things for other fetishes, I've looked around and nothing made me feel anything like a fetish did. What is it? There must be a logical explanation!
A change of plans

Me? Not as good as i hoped to be. As I set off to paint my pending list of requests and trades, I realized that my skills have gone back quite a bit. It made me sad. I have been working these days to get it back and I am almost back to my old self again. Since I still need a little more practice, I thought that getting all the painting done first before proceeding with the X-Treme Artist list is going to be a big setback for me. So I have decided to do both at the same time.
I have just devised a working schedule that will allow me to dedicate my time to everyone I owe a drawing without compromising my studies and other daily affairs. Aaah! It feels great to have an organized schedule in place of the (previously) unproductive mess my day used to be until yesterday! Right beside me as my faithful life savers are Things, Evernote and iCal. 3 great Pieces of software that I couldn't possibly have it all done without them! So thank you a lot to all who aided in their creation and updates!

X-treme Artist Update

Sorry for being away for so long, I have returned from my holidays and classes at university resumed. The whole schedule from last semester seemed not to be working well and so everything has changed. This whole time I have been away I was readapting my own schedule, so that I could continue to carry on my activities without one inhibiting the other. Everything is fine now and I am resuming the list and my online activity.
As you read this, I am currently working on Sketch #4 and later on its coloring. And as I promised, as soon as #4 is done with (luckily tomorrow, if not later today), I will place the list on hold and finish my pending requests and trades. Those people asked me for those pictures before I started the X-treme Artist project, I don't think it is fair that they wait until I finish the list to have what they asked for. And as soon as that is out of the way, its back to the list until it is done!

Vacation report + Living Adventures

I would like to apologize to begin with. I just came back from my trip last night, it was really fun and I sure enjoyed it. But the bad news is that I only managed to finish only one sketch this whole time. I barely stayed at the hotel and the times I did stay, the room would be crowded. (I have this thing that I can't draw while people are looking).
But to compensate for it, i have two good news: The first is that I'm back and I can resume work on those sketches at full speed. The second is that I think I picked up a new hobby... It is something called a Living Adventure™. Basically this is an interactive adventure tale, told with the aid of an RPG system to give the element of surprise! At the end of each chapter of the story, I'll give you a set of options for you to choose what should happen next!
All the adventures will be told in video form at YouTube at this channel: Keeper of the Lore (<-- Click the link to go straight to it!). I've already published two videos explaining how stuff works. And yes, some of the stories will feature anthropomorphic characters and/or animal characters. I hope to see you all there!

I would like to apologize to begin with. I just came back from my trip last night, it was really fun and I sure enjoyed it. But the bad news is that I only managed to finish only one sketch this whole time. I barely stayed at the hotel and the times I did stay, the room would be crowded. (I have this thing that I can't draw while people are looking).
But to compensate for it, i have two good news: The first is that I'm back and I can resume work on those sketches at full speed. The second is that I think I picked up a new hobby... It is something called a Living Adventure™. Basically this is an interactive adventure tale, told with the aid of an RPG system to give the element of surprise! At the end of each chapter of the story, I'll give you a set of options for you to choose what should happen next!
All the adventures will be told in video form at YouTube at this channel: Keeper of the Lore (<-- Click the link to go straight to it!). I've already published two videos explaining how stuff works. And yes, some of the stories will feature anthropomorphic characters and/or animal characters. I hope to see you all there!

Going out for a while...
Posted 14 years agoJust to let you know, request #2 is already done! But unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to upload it tomorrow. As you may know, July is when my holidays take place, and I usually like to spend this time of the year traveling somewhere else. This means no scanner and, probably, no Internet connection. I might still be able to come to the site to reply to messages with my iPad, but nothing fancier than that.
This doesn't mean my sketch production will come to a halt. I'll continue to draw them everyday, maybe I'll even be able to get them done faster! As soon as I get back (around 20th of July), I'll have all of them uploaded for your enjoyment! Which brings up the question: Should I upload all of them at once or on regular intervals? Please vote in the comments below.
That's all I had to say. See you guys in two weeks!

From this point forward, that huge list of 100 sketches you see below will be drawn from head to tail with quick intervals for artistic R&R, where I'll draw my own stuff to check how much I've improved!

As some of you may have noticed, I am being a lot more active in the community that I have been for the past months. I intend to keep it like that for a good time from now on. So before I can do that, I think a good update is in order. Starting today, I'll be uploading a pile of sketches I have been drawing ever since my last official artwork was uploaded to my gallery.
This has two purposes:
1- Although some of them are very old (just some), these sketches should serve as a good example of what quality you should expect your requests to look like in quality and skill level.
2- Some people think I haven't drawn anything new during all this time I've been idle in FA. This is my proof that i did drew some stuff.
Just giving you guys a heads up and apologizing ahead of time for flooding your inbox. If you could comment on what you like and dislike in at least some of them (if you can comment all, even better), I'd be very grateful. It will help me to know what aspects of my work i should give more attention to when drawing your requests!

Posted 14 years agoThank you very much to everyone who participated! I am very happy with all the wonderful requests I received and even had some very pleasant surprises on the way.
I want you wall to know that I will really try my best to make these drawings come out as good as I can. Also know that I will do them all with much dedication, specially for you, because you guys rock and totally deserve it!
I will start the list between July 1st-3rd and will work on them non-stop, with some small pauses from time to time for artistic R&R (by that, I mean draw my own characters to check how much my style has evolved so far). All requests will be done in order, so you'll know when you're next!
As soon as we reach August, the list will have a major pause. During that time I'll be finishing SliceOfDog's request. So I thought to myself: Why not practice hard to improve my style while at the same time I help to improve my popularity in the web? Then I thought about my comic projects I intend to start somewhere next year. What could I do to benefit all of these goals? The answer stroke me down as lightning! THE X-TREME ARTIST CHALLENGE!
I wanna get my style and skills in great shape and YOU are gonna help me get there! The rules of engagement are simple: You request, I draw, we both get happy, got it? Good, then lets talk about what I will draw and what I will not draw:

Status update
Posted 14 years agoSo, just thought about dropping in to inform how things are doing in my art-sphere.
As most of you know,
SliceOfDog has won my "Request a Drawing" contest and that's my current art project. This is proving to be a challenge to me altogether. I never thought in my life that dobermans were so hard to get right at first. As you can see in the request status below, right now I am learning to draw his character and I am having a hard time doing it. I'd say the main villain here is the doberman's odd head and muzzle shape that differs from your normal dog. (I just imagine how tough it must be to draw a bulldog...) The muzzle is thin and long and they basically got no cheeks, just the shape of the jaw connecting directly to the head. In every attempt I either make the muzzle too long or too short while the cheeks format sometimes made the character look a bit deformed.
But then, after taking a look at some doberman drawings, I seem to have unravelled the secret to draw its head. If my theories are right, this request might be really close to receive its final sketch! Gonna try it tonight and see what comes out of it.

So, the request contest has come to an end last Wednesday and we have a WINNER! Please, everyone clap your hands to sliceofdog!!!
I would like very much to thank all of you who participated in this round. You were wonderful. The requests were so good that it was hard for me to pick a winner! Unfortunately the round rules didn't allow more than one winner, something I am definitely going to consider for the next one. So for all those who didn't make it this time, you can have another shot at round 2 and its sequels!!!
As promised, SliceOfDog will get what he requested drawn at the best of my skill! If you are curious about what he has requested, you'll have to wait and see. I'm not spoiling it for you! ;p

So far I have received some really cool requests from some people. Its hard to decide which one to pick as a winner! So come on, give it a try people! You may be the one who will win this round!
