The Furaffinity graphic revamp sucks
General | Posted 6 years agoI deliberately didn't say something right away. The Furaffinity UI was ancient and buggy and a revamp was years overdue, and any change breaks patters one is used to and takes a bit to get accustomed with. So its normal that right after the fact, there will be a bit of backlash from people who got used to one thing and are confronted with something unexpected. Immediate responses are not objective. One has to lean back, try to understand, get rid of subjective emotions and analyze calmly
But after trying to get accustomed to the new, refurbished interface for about a month, I have to say.
FA blew it.
Of all the features, browsing art galleries became much more cumbersome. It's no longer clear which image one is viewing, which way is forward which way is backward, or where in a gallery you are. The whole UI is confusing at first. I thought, OK, fine, probably takes a bit to get used to, but that's not the case. It stays confusing. It's just badly made and non intuitive.
Although there still is a preview of works in the vicinity of the currently viewed work in the preview section on the right. By excluding the current page while making it invisible where the current page is in relation to the others means you have to click somewhere else to go back and forth every single time. There is no shortcuts (arrow keys, arrow buttons) to go forward and backward one image at a time, which is especially annoying when browsing comics. The previews are too small to see details like page numbers, and one cannot recognize the currently displayed page, because it's not being displayed.
And if you reduce screensize - as part of the responsiveness (which technically would be a good thing) even that rudimentary means is disappearing completely. There is no reach "the next page", there is not even a link back to the users gallery. One has to use the browser "back" button, (At least that works. Usually) hope that the browser scrolls back to where it was on its own, then click the next gallery item.
Whoever came up with this design either:
1. must have never used the page as a user, nor any similar site, nor had any motivation to ever do so.
or
2. was simply incompetent and had no clue what they are doing.
If I was using FA more, I'd consider reviving good old greasemonkey to bring usability back.
Did anyone already do that? Are there any working greasemoneky scripts you can recommend?

Check out AlexReynards new story
General | Posted 7 years agoDo you remember the awesome author
alexreynard ?
He wrote a new story, which (for once since it doesn't have explicit yiff - yet) I can link on FA without violating the AUP.
It's truly novel length and he has worked on it for several years, so if you remember or liked any of his old work. Please check it out!
https://inkbunny.net/s/1620264
It's only the first part, there will be more, but even for this, better count in an afternoon or two for reading it.
(Or evening, but only if you don't have work the next day)

To the rescue! Furaffinity Button VI !
General | Posted 15 years agoFuraffinity has changed their database. And their layout.
And: what the horror, your beloved FuraffinityButton Thumbnail preview stopped working !!!
But don't you fear, Blackraven2 is near.
And I made a quick overhaul to bring back to you what is rightfully yours.
Unfortunately the new layout. While wasting less space, doesn't provide us with such an obvious space to put them like the old one did. So unfortunately I had to make some room, stealing away that precious room you just had been given on the left side.
If anyone has a better idea how to do this, feel free to step forth and tell me :)
Both the Greasemonkey and the Custombuttons version have been updated.
You get them here : http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/75225 (GreaseMonkey)
and here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/1155289/ (Custombuttons)
EDIT: I decresed the space wasting of the new layout by moving the advertisements from the top to the left where they used to be.
That way for the space wasted on the left you gain some on the top, where the new layout is extremely wasteful!
EDIT2: Furaffinity changed the layout again regarding the ads, so they don't move anymore. I didn't get to adapt the script again yet though, the next version will take care of that
EDIT3: Ther's another similar script out there for Google Chrome:

General | Posted 15 years agoHi guys.
I know it's not been long since the last one, but I added a cool feature.
The submission view site is essential lacking navigation. Especially the tab pane on the top that you see right now for example (the thing saying "User Page" "Commission Information" "Gallery" . etc...). But that was quite easy to fix.
I'm planning to make it more intelligent, enabling for example the gallery link to lead back to the actual page of the users gallery the particular image is on, but that might be tricky, don't hold your breath.
Both the Custombuttons² and the Greasemonkey userscript version have been updated with this feature.
You find the Custombuttons² version on my journal page
The Greasemonkey version I have uploaded to #
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/75225
New in version 5:
1. Display navigation tab pane in view/ and full/ submission viewing pages.
2. Fix some small issues that affected Opera and Google Chrome when using the userscript version.
Can anyone test and tell me whether the userscript version works in Apple's Safari with the GreaseKit hack?
regards

FuraffinityButton for GreaseMonkey
General | Posted 15 years agoSome of you might know or use the Greasemonkey firefox extension.
It is not as powerful as Custombuttons², but probably safer, and more widely in use.
Therefore I adapted a scaled down version of FuraffinityButton as a GreaseMonkey script.
It is basically reduced to the base functionality: Preview images by hovering the mouse over a thumbnail.
You can find it on userscripts.org under
http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/75225
There's also a number of other scripts for furaffinity available there, see
http://userscripts.org/scripts/sear.....?q=furaffinity
UPDATE: userscripts.org is no longer down, so I put this post how it used to be again, with correct external links

Firefox extension: FuraffinityButton IV !!!
General | Posted 15 years agoI upgraded the furaffinityButton browser extension another time!
you find it here :)
There's a lot of new stuff in this one, so please (as always) tell me if there are any issues with it. I might want to fix them :)
New in version 4:
1. Ever got bored with the two available styles for Furaffinity (default/blue and black)? Wanted to make your own? Now you can. FuraffinityButton now allows you to edit a custom style sheet! (in the right click menu of the button)
2. This custom Stylesheet will override and add to the default styles (blue or black depending on your account settings) every time you visit a furaffinity page. This is done by automagically adding an extra stylesheet reference in the page header, after the default one :)
3. You can enable and disable the custom style feature easily (radiobox selector in the right click menu) There's no need to delete the custom stylesheet if you just want to go back to how it used to look. (But you will need to refresh the current page)
4. FuraffinityButton comes with a pre-created override stylesheet (all you need to do is enable it). I call it "matrix green". Feel free to try it out, or alter as you please.
5. The furaffinityButton checks for the page load status, to insert the extra style as early as possible, so the old colors won't appear during page load. (I'm quite proud of that hack, though I'm sure you wouldn't notice this feature unless it wasn't there :)
6. Though I did quite a number of internal changes, the original features, most notably the auto-previewing of thumbnails that you all love so much do still work!
If you update from a previous version of FuraffinityButton, you need to restart the browser after upgrading. No two different versions can be installed at the same time!

Firefox extension: Furaffinity Button 3
General | Posted 16 years agoI just uploaded a new version of my FuraffinityButon Firefox extension.
New in version 3:
1. Clicking on the button now automatically logs you in on the furaffinity.
The button acts as a link to the furaffinity login page ( http://www.furaffinity.net/login/ ) then checks whether Firefox correctly filled the login form with your username and password.
If so, the form is automatically submitted, saving you the extra click, thus allowing you to go to and log in to furaffinity faster and easier :)
2. Thanks to the new auto login, the preferences had to be moved into the right click / context menu of the button. It feels more natural there anyway.
3. The bugs and quirks concerning page loads in the background have been fixed by using a new technique to interact with page load events.
4. The page now also gets modified faster, no longer requiring all images to load for the preview feature to be available. That's especially useful on those days when furaffinity (or your network connection) is slow.
please enjoy :)

Firefox extension: FuraffinityButton 2
General | Posted 16 years agoI just finished FuraffinityButton Mk II
( available here )
The FuraffinityButton Firefox extension shows previews of most images on Furaffinity, when moving the mouse over their thumbnails, which is especially useful since many thumbnails only display warning messages.
Changes:
1.
The old button only 'fixed' the currently visible Firefox tab, as soon as the page finished loading, but not pages loading in the background. Now pages loading in the background are also fixed, as far as possible.
Known bug:
If you open a Furaffinity page into a new tab in the background, the event handler seems to not get triggered correctly. Doing a manual reload in the affected tab fixes it though, as does clicking a link and then changing tabs.
2.
Some several years old submissions use a different file naming scheme for their thumbnails and half resolution images. Those are now detected and displayed correctly.
3.
Thumbnails where there is no half size resolution available (flash, stories, some weird image formats) now get 'previewed' as a big version of the thumbnail.
4.
When clicking on the button, the current page is analyzed to check whether the extension initialized correctly instead of just looking at the URL. An appropriate status message is displayed.
5.
The size of the preview image is now an easily customizable setting. By clicking on the "FuraffinityButton" one gets to enter the pixel size.
As
furx pointed out, the default of 300px makes the site jump a bit, since it blows up the leftbar. A setting of around 200px or less won't do that, but the preview image might be a bit small for some peoples screens. So I thought the best is to let the user decide.
6.
The Preview now also works when the control panel is visible on the left. Like for example when going through ones own favorites.
7.
The preview image can sometimes obstruct links in the control panel, as well as advertisements on other pages, especially if the previewed image is long. In case one wants to click on an obstructed link (or the less likely case one wants to click on one of the ads) moving the mouse over the preview image will now make it go away.
Enjoy

Firefox Extension for Furaffinity
General | Posted 16 years agoHi ppl :)
Firefox knows a lot of cool extensions, as everyone using that browser might know.
One of them is "CustomButtons²":
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/fi.....fox/addon/5066
This one is special, since it allows everyone to write their own custom extensions as "buttons" for Firefox, and put them anywhere on the browser as you please. New buttons can be installed as easily as by clicking on a link starting with custombutton://
Now comes the nifty part. Ever got annoyed that in the search results, you cannot hover over a thumbnail to preview it, like you can in the "recent submissions" ?
If you ever searched for a term like for example "gore" or "scat" then you will have been annoyed, because all you see is "warning" thumbnails, whats behind is hidden, and when you search something specific, you have to click on every single hit. A tedious task.
No longer. Install the above extension and then this little button, I called "FuraffinityButton", and the missing feature will be automatically added everytime you browse on furaffinity.
Of course it will stop working once they change the page, but hey, as I said before, everyone can edit and modify those buttons easily with a bit of javascript prowess.
A matter of warning though: Those buttons could contain malicious code, so BEFORE installing any you should look into their code to see if something looks fishy. (right click on the install link, select "view source")
All mine does is check whether the current page is furaffinity, if so, add an additional floating "div" in the leftbar, and modify any thumbnails to display a preview in that div when you hover over them with the mouse. Feel free to modify it to suit your own needs.
(update: meanwhile it does a bit more than that, see "features" below)
Here is the button (you need the above firefox extension for this link to work)
