TMI Tuesday: Anti-Depressant Edition
Posted 11 years agoAlright, I have had a rough few days and I'm ready to move on and cheer up!
Velvet: Rough is putting it mildly -_-
Toma: Seriously.
Thank you peanut gallery. Anyway, to help me recover why don't you ask me things? Any topic you can think of, for me or any of my characters. Ask away and I'll answer as soon as I can. Much love <3

Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition First Impressions
Posted 11 years agoFirst, let me get a few confessions out of the way. I have never played a pen and paper RPG. I have a few of them and I've seen streams and recordings of quite a few sessions but I've never had a chance to take part in an actual game. Secondly, my initial exposure to D&D and roleplaying in general came about when 4th Edition released the Essentials line. So even in terms of D&D my knowledge is fairly limited and even after lots of reading a lot of things about the game and mechanics still go over my head. That being said I still have enough understanding of the game to be able to give my impressions of the latest edition being rolled out by Wizards of the Coast.
In addition to a new starter set (which is sadly pretty bare bones from what I've seen) WotC has released two free PDF files for the new edition. One is an overview of the game; covering character creation, the basic rules and mechanics and a list of spells and rituals, and the other is a Game Master guide. For a simple introduction the character creation section is quite impressive but at the same time very limited, encouraging readers to pick up the new Players Handbook for more options. It gives you the profiles of the 4 classic fantasy races; Dwarves, Elves, Halflings and Humans, and the 4 classic D&D classes; Fighter, Rogue, Wizard and Cleric. However the big change here is that you're actually creating a character, rather than just a set of skills and abilities. In addition to Race and Class you're given several options for your characters background and history and even a few tables to roll for personality traits and flaws. 5th Edition seems to be going back to it's more traditional roleplaying roots rather than the focus on combat that 4th Edition had. My personal favorite is the Trinkets, a small item your character receives that can range from a diary in a foreign language to a mummified hand. These present all sorts of inspiration for stories and adventure hooks that the players or DM can use. While the PDF only gives each class a few options, Fighters can only be Champions and Rogues can only be Theives for example, these new additions give you a wealth of freedom in creating just about any kind of adventurer you want. And you're given enough information to raise your characters all the way to Level 20.
Combat appears to be much the same as most RPGs, Initiative rolls, cover etc. However, the system has moved away from the almost video game like stats of 4e and back to the more classic version of 3.5e/Pathfinder. Characters have much less hit points than in 4e as well. The example Fighter they give us gets only 13 points at 1st level, less than the average 1st level Wizard in 4e. This will make combat much more decisive and tense since only a few hits can cause crippling damage to your character. Spells have their own rules once more, rather than just being abilities Mages or Clerics can use. The extensive spell list then give you details each spell's requirements and/or componets to cast then as well as the time needed to cast them. Just like in the past, Wizards will start off very weak and only able to cast a few powerful spells. However, as they progress they'll gain access to truely devastating power.
The Game Master guide contains a very nice Beastiary with a wide array of monsters and creatures to fill out encounters along with a guide for creating NPCs, bandits and the like. In addition it also contains the standard rules for building and running encounters, tables for awarding XP and a section on magic items. There's nothing on creating adventures, building dungeons or any sort of starting adventure for the players. This is to be expected as these PDFs are only a small sample, meant as an introduction to D&D for new players and a taste of the new edition for veterans. No doubt a lot more is coming as the files are still being updated with new content.
To sum up 5th Edition looks like a step back towards D&D's classic roots, something I've always wanted to give a proper look. For new players who are interested in D&D give these two files a looks. For a pair of free files Wizards of the Coast gave us more than enough content to play around with and for newcomers to get their feet wet.

Toma Tsukuhara: a samurai with quick wits and a keen mind. Prefers to settle conflict with words instead of his sword. He is patient and kind hearted but his temper and pursuit of "justice" can sometimes cloud his judgement, leading him to make rash decisions. Reference: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/6089772/
Velvet Verse: An Earth Pony novelist who recently moved to Ponyville after resigning from his previous job. Shy and withdrawn by nature he writes under a psudonym to avoid being put in a spotlight. While by no means unfriendly or unsocial, he simply prefers to be left alone. Has published 2 novels so far to moderate success and is currently working on a new series. Reference: Pending. Light bluish-green coat with a black mane and tail streaked with white. His cutie mark is an open book and quill.
Questions relating to padding and the like are quite welcome~

My Little Pony season 4 finale review
Posted 11 years agoLike so many things in life Season 4 of Friendship is Magic seems to have come and go by in no time at all. However it's certainly left an amazing impression and with Season 5 on it's way I, for one, am eagerly looking forward to the future.
While Equestria Games provided perhaps the worst example of build-up and pay off I've ever experienced, Twilight's Kingdom gives us one of the best. A full season long story arc finally comes to a head in an epic two-parter that I happily rank among the best episodes of the series. The writers brought their best (or at least the best of what we've come to expect from the show lol) and gave us something heartwarming, heartpumping and at times even a little heartbreaking.
The Good:
-The villian. This time around the writers dusted off the orginal my little pony villian and updated him into an even more frightening and threatening incarnation. Many fanfic authors have used him before in their stories and he's often equated to mlp's version of the devil. I always rolled my eyes at that idea but now, I believe it.
-Discord...just Discord. Once gain John DeLancie brings his best to the spirit of chaos. However, unlike in the premiere where he was just there for exposition and a few jokes, here we have him playing a central role in the plot and a very vital one in my opinion. Which leads us too...
-The Princesses. I've made it no secret that Celestia is one of my favorite characters and every time we see her that feeling gets stronger and stronger. In the premiere we got a peek behind the proverbial mask of royalty but here we see it cast aside almost completely. Seeing Celestia show vulnerability, sadness and even fear goes a long way in, for lack of a better term, humanizing her. We also see the relationship between the four princesses when they are together and, most importantly, behind closed doors. Since the end of Season 3 there has always been a nagging thought in the back of my head questioning how Twilight is treated by the other three but seeing this finally silenced it. As before the elder royals are removed from the plot so Twilight and company can do their thing but this time it's done well enough that I can't complain about it.
-The battle. Yes, there is an epic DragonBall Z style battle in My Little Pony. And it was amazing. That is all.
The Bad: (Aka the nitpicks)
-This goes back to what I said about the princesses. In an early scene we see Twilight basically left out of a meeting between the other princesses and visiting dignitaries. That nagging thought I mentioned got a little louder upon seeing this but the scene that followed it put an end to that. I also had to remind myself that at this point Twilight's princesshood was simply a title and her royal duties were simply tasks given to her by Celestia. With that in mind, I just figured that if she had been invited inside all she would be able to contribute to the meeting was to smile and wave...which is what she did anyway. And as I said, the scene that followed put an end to my doubts about how much Celestia, Luna and Cadance care for and respect Twilight.
-That's...about it. Honestly I know I'll find something else in subsequent viewings but for now that's really the only problem I had with the episode.
Those are my thoughts on Twilight's Kingdom parts 1 and 2. As before agree, argue or outright ignore if you so choose. Myself, I'm going to kick back and start thinking up ways to endure the dry spell.

Pan's Labyrinth
Posted 11 years agoFor a while now a good friend of mine has been suggesting I see this movie. And considering the talent behind, by the time I finally got to see it my expectations were pretty high. Now that I have seen it I can certainly see why he held it in such high esteem. However, I must admit I wasn't prepared for just how dark and unpleasnat many parts of this movie was. Now, I'm not saying the movie is bad by any means, the opposite in fact. Grim as it was the movie captured the spirit of many fairy tales and the visuals were breathtaking. If any of you reading this were on the fence about seeing it I suggest doing so, just be warned that this is not the Narnia clone many of the trailers promised. On that subject, I sincerely hope that parents who thought this would be a whimsical fairy tale story for their children had the sense to realize how wrong they were before it scarred them for life. One scene/character in particular (Anyone who's seen the movie will know which one) will be haunting my nightmares for at least a few days.
In short, it's a good movie. Dark, uncompromising and unapologetic about it but very good. If you can handle the violence and grim themes and love Del Toro's visual style then this is a must see. However, it is NOT a movie for little kids. Show them Jim Henson's "Labyrinth" instead. I can promise you that David Bowie's package will give them less nightmares than this.

Birthday wishes
Posted 11 years agoHappy Birthday to my beloved little bro
furlock. Even though we're gonna have plenty of fun times today I want to say it loud and proud that I love you with all my heart and today is special for me too. Because you make me happy to be alive everyday, I have every reason to celebrate this occasion. I love you little bro.
To anyone else, go ahead and pop over to his page and wish him a happy birthday. I know he'll really appreciate it.

Day of the Doctor review
Posted 12 years agoLet me preface this by saying I'm a relative newcomer to Doctor Who. I became aware of the series near the start of Matt Smith's run but only really started watching around Series Seven. Thankfully I have a good friend who's a very knowledgeable Whovian who not only filled me in on a lot of the storylines but also sent me some of his older DVDs. So, to those of you who know more about the series than me please keep that in mind.
That being said...having just watched the episode with my friend I have to say it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. I had some idea of what to expect but I was completely blown away by what I witnessed. Matt Smith, David Tennant and John Hurt (squees) were incredible as the Doctor and their interaction was easily the best thing.
I honestly wish I could go into more detail but if you're a Doctor Who fan you really need to see this for yourself if you haven't already. To those of you who've never seen Doctor Who before I encourage you to give it a look. Doctor Who is certainly one of those series that's hard to get into, mainly because of it's extensive history, backstory and, let's face it, because time travel tends to give people headaches. But this episode was well put together and I was able to follow everything with only a little bit of assistance from my friend. The primary conflict is spelled out rather nicely and, no spoilers, ties in deeply with the Doctor's history in the new series, which is also either explained or can be assumed based on what's happening.
In conclusion....yeah, basically everything I said. If you're a fan, see it. If you want to start, see it. If you hate the series, why are you even reading this? Honestly.
On top of MLP's season 4 premire this weekend has been incredible beyond words. It easily knocked me out of the depression I've been in and I seriously feel like I'm lighter than air. Best wishes to you all.

My Little Pony Season 4 premiere review
Posted 12 years agoAfter over 10 months of waiting, anticipation, drama and hype Friendship is Magic's 4th season finally came and went. And now that I've finished jumping up and down and squeeing all over myself I'm going to share my thoughts on this long awaited event. I will ATTEMPT to avoid spoilers for those who haven't seen the episodes yet but I can't be certain something won't slip. So consider that your warning before we begin.
The Good:
- The intro/theme remained much the same with only a few, VERY welcome additions. The theme itself may have been updated slightly but I personally didn't notice so take that with a grain of salt.
- Twilight is, thankfully, still the same adorkable little pony we all know and love. Personally I was very much for Twilicorn once the idea sank in but hopfully seeing that she's still her old self, only with wings and a title, will reassure some of the naysayers. Not all...just some.
- This episode gave us a peak into the history of, not only Celestia and Luna, but the Element's of Harmony themselves, simultaiously shattering hundreds of head canons and fan theorys while at the same time opening the door to all new possiblities.
- John de Lancie once again brings his A-game with Discord. Not only showing the spirit of chaos is still the playful, almost Loki-esque trickster fans fell in love with but that his 'reformation' was quite genuine.
- This is more of a personal thing, but my favorite thing about the episode was Celestia. Ol' Sunbutt is probaly one of my favorite charaters and this episode, I believe, fleshed out her character more than any other. We got to see her as her usual serene self but we also saw her push her mask of royalty aside to show her true self. Major props to Nicole Oliver for her voice work in this episode.
The Bad:
- While the story itself was well thought out and well executed, even setting up for what looks like a season-spanning story, there were some flaws. The standard 'friends' splitting up plot came and went so fast I almost got whiplash and only served the purpose of padding the episode a few minutes. Also, as I've come to expect in the series, there was a bit of cheesy dialogue that made me roll my eyes.
- A nitpick more than anything but the explaination for Celestia and Luna's absense during the episode bugged me a little. Not so much that it ruined it by any means just a little minor annoyance. As I've said the two are some of my favorite characters and it's always been a pet peeve of mine, in either the show or in fanworks, when the two are shoved out of the story. Granted it's necessary sometimes but I just felt it wasn't handled as well as I would have liked here.
So, that's my thoughts. Agree, disagree or outright ignore at your leisure. At the end of the day this was a phenomenal start and I'm very much looking forward to what comes next for my favorite equines.

Another year older
Posted 12 years agoSo yeah I turned 26 years old today. Not exactly an exciting number but all year I was thinking I was turning 27. So this year I have the unique experience of becoming YOUNGER than I expected. It's...interesting. Anyway I meant to do this earlier but several things have been grabbing my attention all day. Mainly a big fish dinner. Also cake...you would not believe how much I had to restrain myself from making a Portal reference there.
Far as birthday's go, this one has been nice and relaxing. I got some things that I've been really wanting (technically got them before today but that's just how it goes).
Okay, something clever to go out on....bowties are cool. :)

Double Rainboom review
Posted 12 years agoWell, I've got to say this was certainly an experience to remember. For those who haven't heard of it, Double Rainboom is an episode length (longer than a standard episode in fact) MLP fan animation. I'd only heard about it a few months ago when a preview showed up at a convetion and I've been looking forward to seeing the finished product.
Before anything else I'd like to give some major props to the crew behind this project. This was a massive undertaking and they deserve all the praise they've been getting. Kudos to you guys (even though I know they'll never see this), you guys pulled off something awesome and showed what a dedicated group of fans can pull off.
So, down to business. What did I think of Double Rainboom? Should you even care?
Well to answer your first question I thought it was really good and I had a blast watching it. True the voice work was a little off, the memes were a tad overdone and the overall story was kind of flat and generic. However, it was fun to watch and it was quite entertaining for what it was. The animation was very impressive, maybe not quite up to DHX's level but still pretty darn good. The surprise twist cracked me up. As silly as it was I can't bring myself to not like it despite how it sort of came out of no where with no warning or hints. Then again, that's what makes it a surprise. Was it perfect? No, of course not. But for what it was, I enjoyed it. And I hope these guys do some more stuff in the future.
Final Score: 7/10
As to the second question; not really no. I just felt the need to give my two cents on something that's been in the works for so long. I don't expect everyone to agree with me, heck I don't expect anyone will even read this, and I'm not here to change anyone's mind. I simply wanted to give credit where it's due after seeing something I enjoyed.
However, I can understand why some fans didn't like it, and if that's your opinion then more power to you. I'm just a little disapointed at how harsh some bronies are being on something that was just meant to be a fun little project. Fortunately the praise and constructive critisism far outweights the more cynical comments. I've been a little worried about the fandom since the Season 3 finale and it's encouraging to see the positive aspects outnumbers the negative. Just need to be reminded of that sometimes I guess.

Posted 12 years ago....to all my dear friends, both old and new. I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday, even with all the craziness surrounding the 21st. To me it just felt like it came and went with little to no fanfare but I hope everyone else had a great time with friends and family.
Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Happy New Year.

Mixed Feelings - MLP related
Posted 13 years agoOkay, as most of you know this the Season 3 premire of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic aired this morning. I'll get my thoughts out of the way first and then get into why I'm not as happy as I thought I'd be today.
I thought the episodes were really good. I enjoyed the story, the animation seemed better than ever, and the villian (despite the way he was used) was legitimatly terrifying. They certainly aren't my new favorites by but when all was said and done I was happy with what I saw.
However, I'm noticing the episodes are quite a bit of flak. Now before I get jumped on I do realize this is the internet, where everyone has an opinion and every opinion is valid. I also realize I'm talking about the brony fandom, where a character who appeared for 5 seconds in one episode can be made a fan favorite. I just feel it's come to a point that fans are getting a little too harsh with their criticism. I saw this a bit with the Season 2 finale as well and in both cases I admit the episodes aren't perfect, not by a long shot. I just can't shake the feeling that bronies are starting to turn against the show.
Am I overreacting? Probably. After all I'm the type of paranoid freak who checks the vents on his CPU 20 times a day to make sure air is still flowing. It's just in my nature to always expect the worst from anything. We still have a whole season ahead, a short one admittedly but still 11 more episodes that, based on what we know so far, will continue to build and expand the world and character's we know and love.
Once again I admit the episode had some flaws; the villian was over-hyped, under-developed and not utilized as well as he could have been. The characters sometimes acted a little OOC and the writing hit a few snags (some of the exposition scenes in particular). The climax was also rushed, though I argue it had been built up quite well though the whole second episode, and I do wish they had cut back some of the filler so they could extend the final encounter. However, by the end of it I was entertained. And really that's all I care about.
Don't get me wrong, I love this fandom. I love how fans can take these relatively simple characters and see them in so many different ways. And I especially love how much attention the background characters who barely get any screen time get. I guess all I really want to say is maybe it's time to take a step back and turn our inner critics down at least one notch. Thank you...
...also shut the f&%$ up about gak. :P

Back from Issac
Posted 13 years agoHey everyone, just letting you all know that I'm back and safe. The hurricane packed a bigger punch than anyone expected, mainly because he moved so damn slow, but thankfully my area didn't get too much damage. Some houses got wind damage and it was a big mess once it was over but we were lucky. We were out of power from Tuesday night until just a few hours ago, the heat was unbearable but we made it through.
I want to thank all of you who sent prayers my way, I like to think it helped us, and I'd also like to ask that you say one for those who were not as fortunate as I was. I know what it's like to lose everything to a flood and I hope they are able to recover from it.
I'll be getting back to work on my requests soon, I apologize for the delay, along with (hopefully) a couple of more fun story ideas I came up with while trying to keep my mind off the heat.
Best wishes to all.
