Hunter Bahamut!
Posted 11 years agoYesterday was
hunterbahamut's birthday!
Today around 2 AM he had this severe pain in his lower back that migrated around to his front. Pushing 6 AM he woke me up and I rushed him to the hospital.
Turns out our dragonborn artist has some issues with his gall bladder.
He's home now, in bed, resting. Commissions would help him cover his medical and Rx expenses -- please no messages beginning with, "I would love to commission you, but . . . " or the equivalent.
He needs love too, anything The Teeming Millions can do to help would be helpful!

I'm losing my head chef
Posted 11 years agoWell, co-head chef. My #2 son Jeremy -- "Xerxes_Rah" on deviantArt, is leaving the nest to be with his girlfriend in upstate New York on Wednesday or Thursday. It's going to be weird as hell not having him around anymore, but leaving the nest is one of those things you expect to happen as a parent. He thinks his job prospects may be better up there, and I certainly hope he's right.
It may also spell the end of our Saturday night D&D games, since Jeremy did most of the DM'ng and provided the battlemat, minis, other games we played when we needed a break, and most recently, home made props that are nothing short of outstanding and creatively-made.
I do wish him well.
Damn, it's too hard to go on now.

Anyone else seeing more beggars in unusual areas?
Posted 11 years agoIn my job I go to a lot of Walmart stores, some of which are situated in strip mall areas.
From my tenure as a field service tech in Pittsburgh, it's nothing to see someone with their hand out, or someone holding a cardboard sign with some sob story or other.
Now where I live, I do a lot of my shopping in the town of Cranberry (not the township, world of difference). You can locate it in western Pennsylvania near the smaller town of Seneca, near Oil City and a half hour from Titusville, birthplace of the oil industry.
Cranberry ain't big, it ain't much, but it's there.
And one day heading to Walmart to do some work, what do I see but a beggar at the mouth of the parking lot, where you turn in from the road. Holding a cardboard sign and looking pathetic.
Reminded me of what looked like a family at the exit of the Walmart in Chippewa/Beaver Falls, PA, with a cardboard sign telling of how their car broke down and they have no money, etc.
A couple of days later I'm up north in Edinboro, minutes from Erie. That Walmart is in with a strip mall. One day on the way out is a girl who looked to be maybe 22 or so, holding a cardboard sign that says, "Lost everything: and a plea for "help", and by help we obviously mean a cash handout.
Today I saw yet another one in Clarion, a college town not far from Cranberry.
Saw one at the Butler Commons mall in my hometown of Butler, PA, with a cardboard sign, begging.
I can see all of this going on in the big city's downtown area, but we're not talking big cities here. Not by any means.
We're also talking areas where, for the most part, anyone who lived in one would be ashamed to stand out at the exit of a mall car park and beg.
I got further suspicious last week when the lady beggar in Cranberry left her post and went over to talk to a man who looked like he could help her out. They stood there and talked, and were still talking when the light changed.
My conclusion, there's something funny going on.
Of course, no one with a functioning brainstem gives these people a dime, they're healthy and within walking distance of businesses where they could easily apply for work, and some of them I know are actively hiring.
Is this scam happening anywhere else, or just in my area of western/northwestern Pennsylvania?

Burying her today
Posted 11 years agoLeaving for the funeral and burial in a few minutes. I'm amazed at how well my wife Patty is holding up.
Of all the F'KING times!
Posted 11 years agoThe showing for my late mother-in-law at the funeral home is today, 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM, EDT, burial is tomorrow.
And last night, the water went out. Five people need to shower before we go and can't now!
I have it running now, but I don't want to trust it for taking a shower, not yet. Fuck, never rains but it pours on us.

Posted 11 years agoFriday morning somewhere between 3 and 4 AM we got the call. My mother in law passed away.
Patty and I are now both officially orphaned.
Gonna be hard here for awhile, plus losing 2 days of work for bereavement on the days of her funeral and burial, us contractors don't get those days paid. But, she's no longer suffering, she's in a better place, and back with her husband. After all, 62 years of marriage, you can't stay away from each other for long.
" ... and flights of angels sing thee to thy rest."

Only a matter of time

Came home to something interesting this evening
Posted 11 years agoSo I'm driving home up Rt 58 toward Rt 38 in Eau Claire where I live (if you can call that livin'). Turning down a side road I think I see a Pennsylvania State Police SUV, can't tell though. Maybe a half-mile from town I spy a semi-hidden State Police cruiser. I wave, I'm friendly like that, turn onto 38 and drive up to my house to discover I can't get into my driveway, which I share with my neighbor, there's a State Police cruiser in the way.
With no way around it with the behemoth I'm driving (Ford E-150 abduction van, affectionately known as my Abrams A1) I park half on the sidewalk and half on my side of the fog line and go inside. My wife, Patty, is oblivious to everything, playing her game with the TV on instead of fixing dinner. And as the police cruiser is not covered in melted cheese she shows no interest, at least for now.
I go outside to get my laptop out of the van, this is when I hear helicopter blades overhead and look up to see a low-flying State Police copter circling. It's white, not blue like the Sheriff's Secret Police fly. Now I think maybe I should go back inside and get my 9mm and wear it out with me.
I go back outside and after a few steps now Patty shows some interest, apparently having heard the chopper blades going. We walked up to the van and saw the trooper coming out of my neighbor's house, the one who shares the driveway with I. While the wife and I are talking my neighbor comes up to us and tells us a guy with a skimask walked bold as brass into his front door, pointed the gun at his grandson, and said, "Give me your medicine."
Right next door. Can you believe it?
He managed to disarm the guy and as he ran he managed to clobber him with the butt of the pistol. This explains the police, they're on a manhunt over my mudpuddle of a borough.
The caught him (you can't hide from a police helicopter, sorry criminal-wannabes) and everything is back to normal now. Nobody was hurt. Imagine though if he'd picked the next house over.

New Job!
Posted 11 years agoWoo-hoo!
Come Saturday the 22nd I shall be a contract-to-hire employee with CompuCom! I'll be in charge of a bunch of Walmart and Sam's Club stores -- and if there're any I don't know about, Neighborhood Market stores -- taking care of their Pos systems, computers, WAP's, you name it, it's mine to look after -- yay!
Company van, fleet card to gas and maintain it, life has the potential of getting better :)
And I'm still super-part-time with CSA, I just realized I now have 2 jobs. I never had 2 jobs before. This proves to be exciting and fun -- as long as we can keep eating until payday!

Offline
Posted 12 years agoI've lost my Internet connection, I couldn't pay the bill. I'm out TV (no big deal there) as well as my phone and my Internet, which I desperately need to get contract work.
If you'd like a pic, lemme know, I check in from the odd library as often as I can.
Tips graciously accepted!
Meanwhile I don't know when I'll be posting anything again, soon I hope.

Stan Sakai could use some help!
Posted 12 years agoFrom Uncle Kage's --
kagemushi -- FA journal:
Stan Sakai, a man known to many (if not all) of us, is dealing with the challenges of long-term care for his wife who has taken ill. I have told him several times that if he needed help, he only needed to tell me. He's of Samurai descent, though, and would never ask for it.
So we're going to give it to him. It's not charity -- it's overdue payment for the countless hours of entertainment he has provided us with his artistic skills and storytelling acumen.
