It's been a while, (SEEKING NEW MOD!!!)
Posted 12 years agoYoik :
Alright, it's been WAY too long here....
I really should not be neglecting this group, but I seem to have less and less time to log on here and read all the notes and upload new submissions. Not that we don't want people asking questions or asking for files to be added, just for me, I can't find the time.
I know one of our Mods has been very busy with school, and I'm sure the others don't have enough free time to just sit here and work on uploading the HUGE amounts of submissions we do get (I'm sure we'd have even more if we all kept up here, lmao)
So I'm looking to add on on one (or 2) more mods. We'd LOVE to add someone whose in Europe with a good knowledge of laws 'overseas' that might be able to spread some knowledge regarding laws and insight on animals that aren't native to the US (as all our current mods are US based)
I'm also looking for someone who can help me keep up with the submissions, someone who wouldn't mind picking up some office style slack uploading files and properly filling out descriptions, as well as checking in on items that might be needing removal (because items have sold, and they aren't good reference shots) I'd be great if someone who knows a good bit on bones could step up for these positions too, as we ask all mods (granted they have time) to be willing at answer and questions regarding cleaning bones, or IDs.
If you think you'd be a good candidate, let us know!
As I said, we'd like to add on someone who might have a little more free time, and doesn't mind doing some copy/paste and 'customer service' :p
And don't think I've forgot about those prizes guys!!
I have a few headshots sketched out, and I'm slowwwwly working through them! Prizes WILL be completed, Thank you for your patience!!!
We as a group will work on being more active!

Constest update - Sorry, busy on my end
Posted 12 years agoHey guys, I'm getting ready to number the contestants right now (I'll update the journal afterwards)
I'm been SUPER busy all month, and my computers been kinda crap (My mouse is still funky for some reason, so copy/paste is VERY annoying)
I've been neglecting this page due to that.
I'm getting ready to upload all the new posts people have submitted, any contest entries offered up will still be going to the contest, which.
Which BTW, I'll be drawing at least a sketch for ALL the members who've entered!
Since we only had 10 or so entrees we're only doing 2 categories, beginners and established.
Sorry I had you guys waiting, We'll try to stay on top of updates in the future.
EDIT!
CONTEST ENTRIES!
Remember, this is based off BONES, not hides, so although you may have a large collection of animal remains we are lumping you into categories based off the bones in comparison to other entries.
Winners will be announced when one of the other admins are online when I am, so they can verify the random number picked, so we all know it's fair and no one is being bias.
Beginners
1 - the-vol's collection
2 - outputt's collection
3 - MarjoryWarrenne's collection
4 - lunarwolfrose's collection
5 - LadyGreer's collection
Established
1 - whocrysforthestars's collection
2 - skullcabinet's collection
3 - naelin's collection
4 - BluesCuriosities's collection
5 - Tourmaline's collection
6 - deadbones's collection
If you have any questions please ask!

Contestants for Our Collection Contest!
Posted 12 years agoHere are the current standings, these will be updated and submissions will be moved around to their proper categories in time.
(Yoik) I have been a little busy on my end, so I haven't had time to add all the entries we've received last week, I'm in the middle of cooking/cleaning, so this is only what's uploaded so far. The contest is still open, and you're free to link us your entry!
Remember, although you are allowed to share your pelts, mounts, tails, and other pieces, this contest is focused on BONES, so if you have 20 different pelt pieces but only 2 bone pieces, your entry will still be considered 'beginner'.
If you are NOT in the US please tell us so that we can adjust what is considered 'exotic'.
To see the original rules plese go to this JOURNAL
CONTEST ENDS FEB 28, unless we choose to extend, if it's getting close to the date and you still have not gotten an entry in LET US KNOW we can postpone it a few days. THE WINNERS WILL BE SELECTED AT RANDOM SO THIS WILL NOT BE JUDGED STRICTLY OFF WHAT YOU HAVE!
Prizes TBA, but will include artwork ad well as new pieces to add to your collection!

Upcoming Contest!!!
Posted 12 years agoAlright, So I've been thinking up a few activities and small contests to get some members a little more active. I want to set up a little contest where we can get members to show off their collections. This would not be a contest where the actual collections would be judged, because we're not 100% sure how to go about judging them. All you'd have to do would be take a nice shot of your collection your name will be put on a list and at the end of the contest we'll select a winner at random.
You can take either photos of your collection as a full display, or you may take individual images and create a collage. We'd prefer the collection to be at least half bones, so if you have hides, wet specimens, crafted displays, taxidermy, etc. in the image. Remember, the contest in the end will be random luck, so don't be afraid to enter in you only have a few smaller pieces, or if some of you collection is flawed.
You NEED TO TELL US WHAT YOU HAVE! You don't have to put numbers or anything on the photos, just let us know in the description what all you have there. It's okay to label some items as 'unidentified' if you are not sure what they are. If you would rather not upload the photos to FA we can take photo submissions through the notes, just send in a note with 'Contest' as the subject and a link to the image and a description of the collection.
If you already have an image in out gallery of your collection and would like to enter the contest, just let us know and we'll throw your name in the hat, so to speak.
There will be 3 categories:
Beginners - This will be open to those starting out their collection, it's open to novice collectors with a few bones or hides, maybe a skull or 2, this will give those who are just starting out a chance to show off their little hoard without feeling like they'll be overshadowed by those who've been doing this for a while, or people with more resources to gather larger or more impressive things.
Established - This section will be reserved for those of us who've been doing this for a while, this is for anyone who has a larger selection on bone and skulls. Generally speaking it's supposed to be opened to animals native to North America (this is a somewhat ethnocentric rule, but as far as we can gather most members are based in the US and Canada, but if you ARE in another country you are still 100% welcome to enter, you can either choose to enter in this category or the next one)
Advanced/Exotics - This category is open for people who have things in their collections what are more on the 'unusual' side. Generally speaking we're talking about non-typical things, like coyote parts, fox, raccoon, deer, etc. If you have something more unique, like hyena, monkey, kangaroo, antelope, hedgehog or other things you just don't see every day.
Again, if you live say in Australia and have several native species like wombat, kangaroo, monitor lizards, or emu, that might not really be exotic to you, you can choose which category you'd like it to be grouped into.
In the end the winners will be chosen at random, so it's not like an impressive collection alone will win it for you. We want to give everyone a fair chance, since some people might have the resources to accumulate rare items while others are just starting out, or only collect what they find.
You MAY enter 2 categories, if you have some native species and a few exotics!
PRIZES!
We're thinking the prizes will most likely be artwork, if anyone in the group would like to donate time to help out with the prizes that would REALLY be appreciated!
I know skulligans and I are already going to be donating some sort of art to contribute to the prizes, but if anyone else would like to help we'll announce that and any other information about the contest as we get entries and hammer out details.
THIS CONTEST IS OFFICIALLY TAKING SUBMISSIONS AND WILL END FEBRUARY 28, WINNERS ANNOUNCED MARCH 1st!
So get those cameras out and show us what you got!!!
If you have any questions, please ask and we'll get back to you ASAP!!!

HELP! Have any spare fox bones?
Posted 13 years agoOne of our members, and contributors,
BlueWolfCheetah is taking on a fox articulation project and is missing a few pieces, mainly some toe bones and ALL the claws as well as the FIRST SET of ribs, If you have any just sitting around and you don't mind parting with them give her a shout!
From what I understand she's willing to offer trades for bones, so try to help her out!
And don't forget!
We have an open buy, sell, and trade topics, links in the header of every journal as well as on the front page, there have been a few new ads there, so if your looking to sell, or add to your collection don't forget that resource!
And crafters/bone artists, remember we DO allow and encourage you to link us with items for sale, to help you gain exposure, so if you have something to submit, link us, one of the admins or I will add your items to our gallery ASAP
We also have a crafter catalog if you'd like to be added to that!
If anyone has any questions about our group, practices, or anything else, never be afraid to drop a line!

Check out this blog!
Posted 13 years agoHey guys, sorry we haven't had much news on resources as of late, but I do have something good to share, 2 things!
First off, Arzus has shared her blog with a lot of helpful cool pictures and I'm sure plenty more on the way, so go check fer stuff out on tumblr :
http://skinallthethings.tumblr.com/
Secondly, I have my router set up and next week I'll be sharing a stream in which I will be cleaning a bird skull, it will be a voice stream with open Q&A, granted I can speak, getting tooth surgery, which means I'll have some human teeth to add to my collection XD
More info on the scheduling for that when I know I'll be hosting the tutorial. I will be recording it though, in case you can't make it

New ADMIN! And That Skull Cleaning Stream!
Posted 13 years agoHey there Skull Collectors!
I have a few announcements to make here, I've been really busy on my end, so I haven't been updating as much as I could be, but at the same time it's getting colder in my area and I just generally don't like to hang around outside cleaning rot off bones when it's too cold, heh heh. So that's why I haven't added much in the Photo Tutorial department.
We have a new admin here at Bone Collectors!
Everyone give a nice warm welcome to batterypowered!
You may already be familiar with his articulation works:
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8579570/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8442430/
http://www.furaffinity.net/view/8224661/
Battery is an experienced articulator and a knowledgeable bone collector.
If you run into any problems or just would like some more information on any of the processes involved with maceration and/or skeleton articulation shoot him a message either through this account, or directly on his.
Next topic is the skull cleaning tutorial. I haven't forgotten you guys! I still have that skull soaking outside, I'm just trying to get a hold of a router so I can do an outdoor stream, when I get this all together I'm going to announce that I'll be streaming the process giving everyone 3-4 days in advance to be on the look-out for the live stream, though I'll most likely record the whole thing in case some people cannot make it. If and when I get this set up I'll have the stream open for discussion and questions so you're free to ask away during the whole process.
The only other thing I'll mention here is a reminder for all members that you are free to send us in submissions of your personal collections, before/after shots of bones you've cleaned, any educational reference materials. If you'd like us to add submissions from you just leave us a shout or send us a note.
And don't forget our marketplace discussions on items up for sale, trade, or the bone classifieds in case you want to get rid of anything.

Skull Cleaning Stream
Posted 13 years agoWithin the next few days I'll be touching up on a pretty messy skull I have soaking, I'm trying to get a router hooked up so that I can do an outdoor stream focusing on bone cleaning. If I can get this set up I can clean a skull live and maybe answer questions and share tips, would anyone be interested in watching this?
What's a good day/time generally for people (as in are there a lot of you with day job/school, so past 4 EST would be good on a week day)
Obviously not everyone will have the same free times, but I'd like to do this on a day when it will be beneficial.
Thoughts?

Dear contributing members!
Posted 13 years agoHey there everyone, I just wanted to set a little reminder that if you submit an image to us we generally won't answer any questions or comments that will build up on submissions. This is because unless the comment is a question regarding general bone care we might not know what your answer or reply might be.
We are going to try to send notices when the comment has to do with a potential customer, but we don't want to bother you with every comment left on your submission. If someone seems to be interested in purchasing items you might be selling we'll leave you a shout just to let you know.
Even though we have a notice on our profile, and we write it on every submission to contact the OP on the original submission, not everyone reads that. This isn't something we can control. So just as a friendly reminder, try to periodically check back on your submissions, Unless you really don't care to answer comments or questions. Which is perfectly fine. :)

Lets talk about it. Maggots.
Posted 13 years agoOk, So a friend of mine gave me a set of turkey wings he didn't really want, and I wanted the feathers.
Now I had assumed just from working in petstores and having to clip parakeet's wings on a regular basis, that feathers could just be pulled out. (Not that I've ever plucked any feathers, just that a lot of times they'll loose a lot of tail feathers in the process of catching, holding them, and clipping the wings.
Let me tell you. Plucking anything besides body feathers, is no simple task.
Here's a diagram:
http://ars.els-cdn.com/content/imag.....00051-gr10.jpg
Flight feathers are actually connected directly to the bone, the primaries are actually REALLY stuck in there.
Now what I really didn't know, and I ended up looking this up after I decided to take on this task, is that is you want to get feathers from wings, you actually have to do a fair amount of disection.
If you want to play surgeon (which is actually great practice if you ever wish to do taxidermy or even flesh most of your bones by hand) this topic is VERY helpful, and even has pictures! :
How to remove feathers with Quills in tact - http://www.primitivearcher.com/smf/.....?topic=12542.0
Now as you see in these pictures, and as you may know from eating/cooking chicken, birds have very delicate skins and not a lot of wing meat. I kinda fell on this technique by accident, but it's actually a preferred method when it comes to obtaining feathers from wings.
This is a VERY quick, easy, but somewhat gross (if you're squeamish) technique that works VERY well with birds. Now I've only got the wings going, but I can't imagine a full sized animal taking much longer.
All I really did was leave the wings in a shopping bag (actually I had the wings double bagged) I had them hanging on the porch. One day it rained, the next day when I wen't to dry them out and just preserve them I found there to be a bag of nothing but bones, feathers maggots and a very small amount of meat
(more a slew than actual tissue)
I decided to just put that bag in a bucket, put a screen lid on that, and set it in the bushes in the back of my yard. I checked it today, and it's pretty much just bones and feathers. To my biggest surprise they really didn't smell that bad. I'm not saying it smelt good or even neutral... just it didn't smell like a bag of rot and maggots, just like regular dead smell.
Next time I come across a dead bird I'm going to try this out again and I'll be sure to document it, since bird's fragile bones are very had to keep in tact since scavengers often steal bodies. Maggots may make a lot of people's stomachs turn, but they are very effective little cleaners, I'm on day 3 with them and I think within another day I'll be ready to clean off the feathers and bones and set them in borax and peroxide. (borax to disinfect the bones, and peroxide for the bones)

DISCUSSION - Fleshing Bones - Hints and Tips
Posted 13 years agoHey there fellow Bone Collectors!
It's been a minute since we actually posted something informational about the hobby, and
jesie was having a little trouble fleshing some bones, particularly stubborn flesh like pawpads and lip flesh.
Tips!
- When cleaning bones always use a fresh x-acto blade or another type of hand-held blade.
- Peroxide eats away at tissue, this won't help with silver-skin, the rubbery collagen tissue that connects muscle to bone.
- STUDY BUTCHERY! You can use the same techniques in the kitchen when it comes to this macabre hobby. Here's 2 helpful videos fro out friends at the Food Network, lol.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfcbueO7bBE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dbc1aW5C1W0 (this one's long, skip to about 5:00)
- Implement nature! If you have any ant hills in your yard place the bones on an ant hill, cover it with a little soil and let the ants handle it. Just be sure to cover the entire hill so no scavengers take your carcass.
- Slow cook, NOT BOIL, bones once the meat is cooked and cooled it will be soft and easier to pull off, it will also rot quicker, so you can feed the meat to ants, flies, or other decomposers.
These are just a few tips I thought up while sitting here, if anyone else has any hints or tricks we'll expand to this. If you have any questions feel free to ask!
