Bio: Shingen was born an only child of Kaito Takahashi (a university history professor) and Aileen Mackintosh (an entrepreneur in hospitality). His parents met when his father was in the U.K for a conference, and encountered his mother at a hotel. At first they'd hated each other, but during their time together they found common ground in their love for the study of other cultures and histories. Shingen was raised for the majority of his childhood in the U.K, living with his mother until he turned 12. His father, not wanting his son to lose the opportunity of a career in Japan, took care of him thereafter, with his mother visiting as often as she could.
Shingen's names were an interesting subject as he learned when he grew older. As part of his education in Japan, his father impressed on him a love for history. As a result, the origins of his first name came from the Sengoku Era. His father's family lived in Yamanashi Prefecture in eastern Japan, historically known as Kai Province, and a well known lord of Kai was Takeda Shingen. His middle name, which was a subject of constant question by the friends and acquaintances he made in Japan, as middle names were highly irregular, originated from his grandfather on his mother's side.
Despite being a foreigner in Japan initially, Shingen became bi-lingual, fluent in English and Japanese thanks to the efforts of his parents; his father often refused to speak to him in English, which helped considerably. He left high school with good grades, and joined university alongside several of his former classmates, including one Akiko Mori, a girl he'd been in a relationship with throughout high school. Aki's family were restauranteurs, who Shin came to know quite well, while she had a part-time job as a waitress, and took part in self-defence courses. They'd planned to comfortably break up if they failed to get in together, but on their respective successes, their relationship remained strong. When Shin was 19, however, the university was involved in an incident that gave him a hard wake-up call to the modern world. An armed criminal forced his way onto the campus while escaping pursuing police. He entered the main lecture hall and attempted to hold students there hostage. The professor present was injured when he tried to calm the shooter down, and as this happened and the shooter went to the window, Aki and several other brave students rushed him. The gunman just started shooting indiscriminately at that point. Shin watched his girlfriend gunned down, and sat there doing nothing. He had sat in the lecture hall, trying to process what happened, as the gunman was overpowered. He didn't remember getting up from his chair, but every step to her body had echoed in a room he suddenly felt so alone in. He was deaf to the world when he took her in his arms, and just cradled her, only letting go when the paramedics took her from him.
His dorm room barely survived the full extent of his fury. Shin kicked his trash bin so hard he was sure he'd broken something in his foot. He blamed the police at first, then the faculty, but came to the conclusion it was his fault ultimately. He hadn't tried to stop her, nor had he supported her actions. They were brave but foolish, and yet why had he not said anything? He guessed part of him had hoped Akiko would take the gunman down, with her kick-ass martial arts. But she'd failed, and he'd failed her, and himself. His father was supportive when Shingen took a break from university. Shin couldn't bring himself to face Akiko's parents, at first, but then her mother asked him to come to her funeral. He'd expected her father to strangle him, he wouldn't have blamed him; Shin had been responsible for Aki. But instead he got a tearful embrace and a grown man sobbing on his shoulder.
After that Shingen decided he wouldn't go back to university. He thought about attending the police academy, but that wasn't enough for him. If his girlfriend could be selfless, so could he. He wanted to get stronger, but he didn't want to be stuck chasing petty criminals. He endeavoured to join the JGSDF. His father wasn't angry, simply unsure whether Shingen was making the right decision. Nonetheless, he pointed his son to his brother-in-law, Hiro. Shingen's uncle was a Second-Lieutenant (San-I) in the 12th Brigade based out of Shintō.
Shin had played mil-sim games, but the real thing was completely different, though that didn't matter. He played to go hard or go home. His uncle didn't play favourites and for that he was thankful. Fire-arms training was empowering but also chilling, though he approached his training with diligence and a clear mind. He wasn't over-eager for action, but prepared for it. Airborne repelling and drops were thrilling to him and he simply couldn't get enough of them, earning a bit of a reputation as a daredevil. As he pushed harder and harder he rose slowly in rank, showing consideration for any of his comrades that were failing and giving them encouragement and the means to persevere through the toughest of exercises. Shin undertook a non-commissioned officer training programme and came out a Nisō or Sergeant.
Shingen's career wasn't solely served in the country. The JGSDF frequently trained with foreign militaries, though the US military was usually their dancing partner. It was during this time that he came up with the mad idea to wear a personalised ballistic mask. US special forces wore grim-visaged balaclavas, so his idea wasn't completely insane, as ballistic protective masks were common enough. Shin was inspired by a collection of old samurai masks his father had given a talk on, and so designed an oni-style mask to perfectly fit his face, while giving him a potentially psychological factor. His unit had thought it was hilarious, but it proved useful for interrogations. When he was 22, he was deployed with the brigade to the central Africa, taking part in peacekeeping operations directed at safeguarding humanitarian relief forces, and combatting hostile militias.
During his rotations he usually winds up in short-term relationships and flings, with either servicewomen or non-military girls, but never managed to hold onto any of them for long.
Since turning 26, he's been in multiple operations in west Africa countering piracy, although he's currently enjoying some leave. Shingen is scheduled to return to active service abroad soon enough. Until then, he's got time to relax and meet new people.
