General | Posted 3 months agoit's surprising when I look at old stuff I've made (old, in this context, can range anywhere from 'a week ago' to 'decades ago'). a lot of the time i'll look at it and see nothing but stuff I want to fix.
Similarly, like many of us are apt to do, I typically trap myself into mourning a life I haven't lived. "I'd handle that situation much differently if it happened now" ; "If only I'd said ' xyz ' instead of ' yyz ' ". It's all for nothing.
i spent 2022 really building myself and growing in really positive ways. I'd had a significant period of change, followed by another significant period of change, on top of a significant period of change. I'd been married for 3 years by this point, coming out the other end of COVID after moving to a new country. Prior to this, I had been existing solely inside my mind. I forgot I even went up there, must've been to get something that was important at the time before I just wondered off and got lost.
My partner has been, and continues to be, incredibly patient and helpful. I found something I could apply myself to, and could see consistent improvement and momentum. Bit by bit, I started climbing out. I was finally able to start exploring parts of my own being I previously had seemed to not have had the ability to. All the lives I hadn't lived were no longer important, only the one in front of me was what mattered. I was finally in control. I was finally alive.
Looking back , and seeing nothing but mistakes, while painful, is at the very least a sign of growth. A signpost to remind you of change. All you can do is carry it forwards, in the eventual or improbable case of a 'next time'.
Things kept getting better. My brother came to visit me. I got a new job. Everything was gonna be alright. I needed everyone to know.
And then I remembered what trapped me in my mind.

im gonna write a journal here
General | Posted 4 months agofrom time to time i'll spend an inordinate amount of time writing a long journal post only to just not post it. but maybe i can try to use this .. as a journal?
this year i've been revisiting traditional art a little more, first using copics/alcohol markers for the first time and now watercolours (thnx to
fredfredericks) . i grew up on making traditional art, basic pencils and colouring pencils and pens ; i love the practicality of physically creating something, appreciating a process and having something to show for it, it's something id encourage anyone to explore given the opportunity. it helps set foundational groundwork and context for digital art too ; the 'undo' button is way too powerful. Working traditionally is a lot more therapeutic and peaceful than digital and you just gotta be ok with the mistakes. it's something i'd love to spend more time doing and i'm gonna try to find ways to mix it in with my process in more pieces.
although at times i feel like i've bitten off more than i can chew, giving myself a project to work on has been a fantastic motivator for me.. creatively, it took me so long to 'find my voice' and now i just wanna yell ; all i want to do is make stuff, it's all i have to express myself , and i've spent so long NOT making stuff .. it's probably best that i have to work a 'job' JOB, as much as i hate it and as much as it holds me back, in some ways it keeps me grounded and keeps me from burning myself out. if i was left to my own devices i'd fuck everything off and just draw and draw and draw .
i feel like i should do another paragraph to close out my thoughts but i got nothin and i gotta sleep but pretend i wrote something really thought provoking here, something that made you feel a fire inside yourself , bright enough for you to grab something to draw with .. and something to draw on.. and just make some stuff. and then when you're done, make something else.
