One year musings. Pt.2 My Writing
Posted 11 years agoI've mentioned before in the past how stunned I was that I was able to write as much as I have for these characters. Sadly... I seem to have hit a bit of a road block. There's probably about 6-8 chapters left in Two Badgers, but I just can't seem to get myself in gear and actually write them. I know what's going to happen, how it's going to happen, and what the end result of everything will be. But... I just can't get motivated to pick up my pen (or keyboard as it were) and start writing again.
I suspect that my early proliferation of writing was a result of me not being the artist I wanted to be, and I spent more time writing than drawing. Because I couldn't express myself visually, I chose to express verbally in written form, and the writing just flowed out of me. Now that I can draw as well as I can, I can't seem to get interested in writing again. Suddenly, I find myself with sympathy for George R.R. Martin (who's notorious for spending YEARS between books while fans clamor for the continuation of his story) in that it's HARD to write a story if you get bogged down in the details like I seem to have done.
That being said, I am still thrilled that I've written as much as I have and gotten to tell the story as far as I have. I just really hope I will somehow find the motivation and time to get back on track with Two Badgers and finish the darn story... cause I want to write it as much as some of you want to read it.
I still wish that more people would read Of Tunnel Rats and Badgers and Tale of Two Badgers, as I feel that they offer something truly unique to the fandom. I fully intend at some point to turn the stories into a comic form (HUGE undertaking, and scary as hell) so that the story can be told and familiarized to more people. These stories are the mark I want to make on the fandom. They are the core of Brock as a character, and as cute and touching as art of him may be, it means little without the basis of those stories. Knowing what he's been through and where he's coming from makes the art more poignant and appealing.
So... in conclusion. Yes, I will finish Two Badgers at some point, I haven't abandoned the story, I just can't seem to write at the moment. If you haven't read the stories, you should, and I would love it if you did. :)

One year musings. Pt.1 My Art
Posted 11 years agoSo, as I said on Friday, I'm gonna be posting some thoughts about this year and how it's effected me, and hopefully what it all means.
I never expected to really be an artist. I just wanted to get good enough to doodle some pics of my characters, show a little of their personality. But what I didn't count on was the addictive nature of drawing. I mean, I've been doing artistic things for years. Painting, photography, graphic design, music... All that stuff, but never done anything with figures and a more cartoonish look. I've never been able to draw or create anything from my head before. What I mean by that is I always needed to physically SEE something to draw or pianist it. I could never visualize something and see it come to fruition on paper (or in this case, on screen).
All that has changed. It has become almost easy to imagine something and actually realize it visually now. And more and more, what I see in my head is what's coming out of my pen, and that's a big thing for me. I suppose it's just constant practice that's allowed this to happen. So, I would to say to anybody who wants to learn to draw... Practice every day.
Another thing I didn't really expect was my style. I've heard people say that there are a few basic schools of art here on FA, especially in the BF community. I started out emulating Kammy and Pensive for the most part, or rather trying to. But I found, as I watched more and more people's work especially in streams and such, that I was picking up bits and pieces from other artists and incorporating them into my work. And what has resulted from this is a style that I feel is uniquely me. And one that I am very happy with. I no longer find myself copying what another artist would do, or having to look at somebody else's art to figure out how to draw a particular thing. What has resulted from this is I feel like you could scroll through a page of random art and easily pick out my works. And that's something that's an amazing feeling as an artist.
And finally... I look back at the drawings I did in the first few months I was here, and I cringe. At the time I was soooo proud of them, but now... I know I can do so much better. The anatomy is so off kilter on some of them, the proportions are out of whack, the line work is choppy. I want to redo some of them. So, please, go back through my gallery and nominate some early work you'd like to see re-drawn! Preferably something from the first 2 months or so. :p The concept on a lot of these I really love, but the execution was not up to the task yet.
Thanks for listening! Now, go pick an early work of mine you'd like to see re-drawn. :3 I know which ones I'd like to do, but I'm curious what y'all would like to see.

Sorry... need to vent...
Posted 11 years agothis has been a really crappy weekend.
Lemme explain. My job, as much as I love it, is high intensity and fairly stressful. Lot of hard deadlines that require a lot of other people to do their part in a timely fashion in order for me to meet MY deadlines. As such, I often have to ride other people pretty hard to get info and other things I need to do my job. Now, I'm a pretty introverted person. I don't like playing the heavy, and frankly being around a lot of people and having to interact with them on a daily basis tends to wear me out and wear me down.
I need the weekends to relax and recharge my batteries. Time to be alone, time to rest, time to just kind of veg out a little. Streaming art helps, gives me a release and allows me to interact with people from a safe distance. Usually, my weekends start by going to a movie alone on Friday nights, just a dark place where i can lose myself for a couple hours. Couldn't do that this week. Folks had scheduled some of their friends to come over for dinner on Friday nights, and since I do almost all of the cooking for the family, they needed me there to make dinner and all that.
No big deal. I can survive a friday night. Even with the usually hectic weekend days involving housework and yard work and all the other crap I deal with every weekend, I've still got the two nights to relax. Right. So... This weekend's project involves painting the bathroom we're remodeling. Time consuming and annoying. Not enough time between coats to do anything relaxing. And then, saturday night my mother invites another set of friends over for ANOTHER dinner party, and I've gotta be social and Mr. Cook again. Wasted day prepping and priming the bathroom, and then the evening at another useless party with people I hardly know.
Spent all day today painting the walls of the bath, running out to get more paint, more tools, etc. All that junk, thinking that Sunday night will cure all, give me that few hours of release I need. Not gonna happen. Turns out the tile guys are coming on monday to grout the tiles... which means we've got to finish the CEILING as well. It's now 6:00, and we're probably not going to get the painting done for at least another 3 hours cause the walls are still too tacky to tape off the ceiling lines.
So... I haven't drawn ANYTHING all weekend, gotten little to no downtime to relax, and I've got no prospect of getting any of that before I hit monday morning running at full speed for another hectic stressful week of work. I'm just... hurting and exhausted. With no relief in sight for another week. And knowing my household and living situation, likely not to get much relief next weekend either.
Sorry... just needed to write out how I'm feeling right now.

Posted 11 years agoOne year. Almost to the hour. One year since I signed up for a FurAffinity.net account and gave birth to Brock O'Meles. I never expected when I started down this road how many people would end up watching me, how many people would come and look at my art, how many people would read my story.
At first, I simply intended to gain access to the site so I could look through some people's private galleries, and just wanted a little bit of a backstory and a minor character to fiddle around with. I never expected to draw as many pictures as I have, to write as many words as I have... to make as many friends as I have.
So... thank you all for your support and your friendship, you have made this journey something more than I ever dreamed of. Over the next week or so, there's going to be a lot of retrospective journals, probably going to try and redraw some of my earlier works. Lots of things to celebrate!
Hey! It's Brock's Birthday today! Canonically, he's now 33 years old, despite whatever age he happens to appear as at the moment. :P
Again, thank you all for your friendship and support over the last year. It has meant more to me than anyone can realize.

Follow 'em Friday! C
Posted 11 years agoYup. Keeping with the theme (meme? maybe...) Here's some artists that I watch starting with C who are worth a look for those of you looking for new people to watch. I'm only picking people who do their own art and are at least semi-active. If you're not listed here, it doesn't mean I don't like you or that I think you're unworthy. I just may not be that familiar with your work, or you don't meet one of those two criteria.
So... Artists who start with C...
CalciferTheFruitBat
Cake (heh... two C's for the price of one) draws some really cute art, and come on. It's a freaking purple bat! What more could you want from an artist! XD
Chazor The dragon's got some skillz. Excellent cell style and does a great job with life-like posing and emotional content. Always happy to see his work show up in my inbox, and you will be too!
Christaphorac I honestly don't think any artist personifies the joys of childhood any better than this cat does. So much fun to watch what he puts out, and I love his painting style as well.
chuziku IMO one of the best artists on the block. Not only that, but he's one of the most interesting guys to watch streaming cause he can put together an amazing sketch in no time at all. There's a reason this guy's listed in my "favorite artists" section. Look through his gallery, and you'll find out why. (and no, it's not because he draws me stuff all the time either... :P)
codytehfox Another artist who's steadily stepping up his game and getting better and better all the time. Always look forward to what he's gonna do next.
ConejoBlanco Forget the man, this guy's the Bunny! Wonderful cartoony style, and every pic is consistently good. Plus, he works traditionally, which is something I really admire and wish I could do better myself.
CrayoningKerfuffle The artist formerly known as Lucca or Aspentree or any number of other names. :P Tons of characters, tons of art, and all of them (and it) cute as a button.
crinkles Another excellent toony artist who puts a ton of emotion and feeling in each and every piece.
I think that about covers it for the artists. I'd also like to mention a few C's who may be more watcher than artist, but are still very cool people and are worth a mention either due to the wonderful art they commission, or simply the fact that they're awesome people. :P
caji_kitty is a great guy and has compiled a list of art tips & tutorials that is freaking encyclopedic.
cayde-otter gets some amazing art done for him and has an adorable character. Well worth a watch, just to see what he gets.
clothy55 is a sweet guy and very very friendly.
I think that about covers it. If you know any other C's worth a look that I may have missed, feel free to comment and correct my ignorance.

Whatcha Wanna Know Wednesday!
Posted 11 years agoEr... First of all, sorry I haven't been particularly active as far as responding to comments, faves, new watches and all that stuff. I've been a bit reclusive and quiet recently and I'm trying to break out of that funk. Hopefully soon. XD Anyhoo...
Whatcha Wanna Know? You know what? I need to be more outgoing, more open about myself, so... ask me questions about ME this week. That's me as in the artist behind the stripes, not Brock & Bella. The real me. Ask away! I'll answer.

Posted 11 years agoIt's friday, so time to highlight some people on my watch list who I think do some pretty darn cool art. XD Keep in mind, these are people who do their own drawings, not watchers or commissioners for the most part, and may also include some writers as well as artists.
So... on to the "B"s. XD
BabyChrisTheFox Does some great AR stuff and a has an adorable style of art rather reminiscent of Sonic.
Benihime_Shido Such an adorable character and her art's steadily getting better and better. Sometimes does some slightly disturbing gore type art, but I love the rest of it.
blackflameheart Pretty darn good writer if you're into AB/DL stories and fan tics.
bobkitty I don't know why Bob doesn't think he's that good, but he is. If you want to see somebody who's really good at posing and line-art, check him out!
boulou New to the site, but rapidly becoming one of my favorite artists. Lou's still got some room for improvement, but they've got a natural understanding of body proportions and posing that is second to none, and I cannot wait to see where this one ends up years down the road as they develop.
boxer. Also pretty new, Brandon (another B! XD) has a wonderful style and a super adorable character. I can't wait to see more arts from this pup.
brevity Chances are you're already watching this one, but if you're not... you should be. Toren is a supremely talented artist and I love his work.
Lots of B's... and here's a few more I'd like to mention that are super cool people even if they're more watcher than artist.
,

, and
are all really good people to talk to and hang around with and talk to, and some have been known to get some pretty cool artwork from others as well.
Thats it for now, I think I covered everything I wanted to here. So, if you have any "B" artists that you think are worth a watch that I might have missed, let me know!

Help out!
Posted 11 years agoHey.
boulou needs a little help, and I can't do anything quite at the moment. They're doing a couple of quick commissions to raise a little money, and they do ADORABLE art!
Plus, they're VERY reasonably priced. True bargain here, so... if you've got a few bucks to spare, go help them out here: http://www.furaffinity.net/journal/5635931/

Posted 11 years agoOkies... I'm kinda stealing this idea from
toddlergirl but I really like it, so I'm gonna do it.
I'm going to be listing a few artists from each letter of the alphabet that I think are super-amazing and worth following. I will ONLY be listing artists that actually do their own art, no matter how nice and awesome some of you all who are simply watchers are, I want to spotlight the artists for this one. Maybe I'll do something for the non-artists another day.
So... Here's the A list.
acidgrunt
Seriously. If you're not watching this guy, you need to. He is easily one of the most awesome artists on the site and his work has this wonderful tongue-in-cheek/wicked sense of humor that always makes me come back to it and stare at it more.
Adriana_Silva
Up and coming artist well worth the look. Fairly new to the scene, but has a really pleasant style. Check her out!
applepup
Yeah... here's another one you really need to be watching. Apple's way of working with light is wonderful, and I love pretty much every piece they put out. Everything is so warm and cozy in their pics.
aricub
Always has adorable work, and has come a very long way in her style and techniques. I love Ari's line-art, and the soft, gentle way she depicts events. Brings a smile to my face every-time I see a pic of hers.
alexcub
Looking for somebody who does 3-D Digital modeling? Well, look no further! Alex is one of the few, if not the ONLY 3-D CGI artist I've seen that does baby-furs, and does them very well. He also does some epic group pics! Check his work out.
Thats it for the A's at this point. If there's anybody I missed that's worth a look, feel free to leave a comment! Theses are only the people I currently watch, and I'm only watching about 450 people, so I'm always on the lookout for more talent! Just remember... this is an ARTIST list. Watchers, I love you dearly, but I'm looking for the artists this time around.

Well, I thought I'd get a little creative today, cause frankly I'm getting a little bored with WWKW as it currently is and I want to try something a little different to keep it fresh.
So... I'm going to ask YOU a question instead! Flip things around. XD
So, my question for YOU is...
What made you choose the animal for your fursona?
Go! (if you REALLY want to ask me something, go right ahead as well, but you must answer this question first. :-P)

Help Gemma! And Whatcha Wanna Know?
Posted 11 years agoGemma's got a plushy in the voting rounds of a competition, and can use a little help. Seems some of the other "artists" have started a negative voting campaign against her (Vote my design up, and everybody else's designs down everybody!) and she wants to win on positivity alone... so go give her a hand!
Details here: http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12997647/
And yeah... it's wednesday. Whatcha Wanna Know? Ask anything of any of my characters, or ME, and get an answer. I can't guarantee it will be true or factual, or even plausible, but you'll get an answer.
Go!

f5 for sneak peek!
Posted 11 years agoBeen working on something special for St.Paddy's day, cause well... you know... Brock's Irish to the core. XD
So, I've decided to give y'all a sneak peek before hand and uploaded a new avatar. Feel free to speculate on what's happening in the rest of the pic. (If you've been in my streams this last week, you already know, so keep it quiet! XD)
Sláinte! Brock

Sorry I been so quiet, and Whatcha Wanna Know Wednesday?
Posted 11 years agoSorry I haven't been posting many journals lately, or even talking much on skype with some of you. Just been really busy and moderately stressed at work for a while, and it's taking a bit of a toll on me. I've been putting on weight cause I tend to eat when I'm stressed, which in turn slows me down and makes me lethargic. Hopefully with the arrival of spring things will settle down and I'll get back in fighting form soon. :p
So... Anyway.
It's Wednesday. Whatcha wanna know? This time, I want you to ask questions to and/or about Emelia. (http://www.furaffinity.net/view/12647263/)
GO!

Whatcha wanna know Wednesday?
Posted 11 years agoYup yup. It's the middle of the week. Perfect time to ask those burning questions that keep you up in the middle of the night. . So, I've got answers, you've got questions. Let's see if any of them match. XD
Whtacha Wanna Know Wednesday
Posted 11 years agoYup. It's that day. Time to delve into the deep dark mysteries of life, the Universe, and badger minds. :P Ask me questions, get answers. Doesn't have to be about me. Can be whatever you want to know. Just don't be surprised if you get weird answers.
STREAM OVER
Posted 11 years agoSorry y'all, my internet is being crappy tonight, and Join.me decided to take a dump on me, so I can't even connect to it again.
I'm done for the night. Too many things going wrong for me to keep a positive attitude about it for now.

Please, tell me... and Whatcha Wanna Know Wednesday
Posted 12 years agoI found out the other day that somebody I thought I was on friendly terms with had blocked me, when I hadn't even said anything to them or commented on anything of theirs in months. Also, nothing I ever said directly (or indirectly) to this person was ever negative or taken negatively as far as I know. While it doesn't really bug me that I was blocked, (I understand people have their reasons) what hurts is I have NO IDEA what I did to earn this. I've been wracking my brain for a week trying to think of anything I might have done to offend, and I cannot come up with a single thing.
I've also noticed a lot of people (in general, nobody in particular) seeming to have problems with other people around the fandom. So... I just want to make this clear. If I ever do anything or say anything that offends you, please let me know. If I ever draw something that pisses you off, please let me know. If something about me or my characters upsets you, please let me know.
I like to think I am a kind, reasonable person, and I can take criticism. I know I can't please everybody, but I do like to be on positive terms with as many people as I can. If there's something that you feel you need to tell me, please drop me a note, hit me up on skype. Don't just randomly unwatch or block me. I can't do anything to resolve the issue if I can't communicate with you.
So, on a more positive note.... It's wednesday! Whatcha Wanna Know? Ask me stuff and I'll answer as I best I can. :3

Portrait Commissions Open
Posted 12 years agoI've decided to add a new category to my commissions list. I'm going to be offering detailed portraits like I did for Az and Emelia. They are full shaded, lit, and textured painted line-arts.
Considering each of these takes between 4-5 hours of work to do, I'm asking for $15 dollars each and I will take 3 spots at a time so I'm not overwhelmed.
Here's what I need from you if your interested:
1. Character ref. this can be an actual photo of an animal that's close in appearance to your character. I'll anthropomorphize it as necessary.
2. Expression you'd like on the painting.
3. Backdrop color. (Will be painted to look like the examples, though I can vary the shape on request)
Examples:

Please comment here for a slot, and I'll expect payment upon acceptance of the commission
