Another transit around the sun.
Posted 7 years agoWell...I'm another year older, a few more health issues popping up, but still going. Next year is the big 5-0 mark. It also marks the 50 year anniversary of the Moon landing (Hint hint guys...lets get the HELL out of low orbit and get back out there!) Been putzing around with a lot of things, and have to change my attention to 15 years from now. Lessee...managed to snag a Huion Kamvas GT-156 V2 on eBay for $375, so I'm going to try digital art ( for the life of me, I just can't get the transition to the digitizer pads).
Gonna hit the bed soon, as I'm planning on getting to the lake early and fish for a few hours. For now, I'm going to enjoy a cup of coffee and some rum raisin ice cream.

Memorial Day
Posted 7 years agoTo my brothers and sisters out there, whether you are in the line of fire, safe with loved ones, or doing your duty; I wish you peace in whatever way you understand it. Remember those of our family that have fallen, have passed on, or are still fighting their demons. You are never alone.
Question for you digital artists.
Posted 7 years agoI've been looking at the different digital tablets available, (Wacom Cintiqs, Huion Kamvas, Yiynova...) and would like some recommendations. Mind you, I can't justify spending a grand on a Wacom Cintiq and I'm kinda balking at the price of even a refurbished Cintiq...
Ok...this gets filed under "What was I thinking?"
Posted 7 years agoOk...far be it from me to try a recipe that sounds interesting and healthy only to turn around and go WTF?!?
Creamy Cucumber Soup
1 Tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 Cloves Garlic, minced
1 Small onion, diced
1 Tbsp Lemon Juice
4 Cups Cucumbers, diced, seeded
1-1/2 Cup low sodium Vegetable stock.
1/2 Tsp Salt
1/4 Tsp Ground black pepper
1 Avocado, diced
Pinch Cayenne pepper
1/4 Cup chopped parsley
1/2 Cup Low Fat Yogurt
1/4 Cup freshly chopped parsley
Basically, heat the oil and saute` the onions and garlic over medium high heat (About 1-4 minutes). Add the lemon juice and cook for an additional minute, before adding 3-3/4 cups of the Cucumbers, stock, salt, pepper, and cayenne. Bring this to a boil and then reduce to a gentle simmer and hold there for 6-8 minutes.
Transfer the contents to a blender (very carefully...it's flippin' hot!) and blend until smooth. Add the avocado and parsley and repeat.
Spoon into a serving bowl, stir in the yogurt, and voila! C'est magnifique!
Vraiment? Mais non.
First...LEAVE OUT THE SALT.
Second...Leave out the (and I can't believe I'm saying this) Cayenne.
Add 3/4 Tsp of diced Spearmint, and a 1/2 Tsp of Dill Weed. Also, go ahead and use the whole Cup of Greek yogurt.
I doused it with grated Parmesan cheese, but I would have loved to have tried this with crumbled feta.

Gastric Bomb
Posted 7 years agoOk...my diabetes messes with my stomach, much to the point that eating beef can be an exercise in gastric distress and sleepless nights since it doesn't want to digest. That doesn't mean that I don't like to experiment! (Insert maniacal laughter here.)
Sicilian Beef Pinwheels.
Your choice steak cut (I have a butcher that offers fairly large cube steaks for such an undertaking)
3 slices Sharp provolone.
3 slices Capicola
Small bag of Pepperoni slices.
1 Clove minced garlic.
Panko breading.
Small can of mushrooms.
Your choice of Italian Spices. (I have a nice Herbs de Province blend, sans Lavender)
Lay your meat out on a clean board and give it a good rub down with the spices.
Toss the mushrooms into a food processor and puree them with a clove of garlic.
Add a layer of provolone, then the Capicola, mushrooms, pepperoni, and another slice of Capicola.
Roll it up and tie it with butcher's twine or a skewer.
Add a slice of provolone to the top.
I broiled mine in a counter top oven, so cooking times will vary based on your preference.

Question for the Gang

Thanks!
Thanks!
Windows 10 and all these updates to all software....
Posted 8 years agoIs it me, or is Microsloth patching bad code again and again, loading mindless apps, and just nothing more than drek? I tried to roll back a laptop to an earlier build and everything crashed. I'm damn near the point of getting my paws on some clean copies of Win 7 and installing that.

Accidental Chowder
Posted 8 years agoEver have one of those evenings when you just open the fridge, start pulling things out, put it together and it comes out amazing?
Accidental Chowder.
In a gallon zip lock bag; add a pound and a half of haddock (cut into 1 inch cubes), and about 1-2 dozen oysters with juice, a 1/4 tsp sea salt, and the same amount of sage.
1/2 Vidalia Onion, diced
1/2 Red Bell Pepper, diced
1 Small can of diced tomatoes and green chiles
1 small can mushrooms (diced after removing from the can)
1 can white potatos (diced -this is getting dicy)
2 Tsp minced garlic
Healthy dose of dried Basil ( About a tablespoon)
About 2 tablespoons of a Cajun/creole spice mix.
Saute everything in butter until the onions are translucent.
Oh...and slice up 2 Andouille sausages into @1" slices and toss in there as well.
(Edit- DOH)
Transfer everything from the pan to a bowl, and make a thick roux with the pan drippings, flour and milk. Transfer this from the pan to a bowl and let sit for 12-15 minutes.
Move everything to a small stock pot, and add about 3/4 gallon of skim milk, a stick of butter, a cup of Sweet Italian Cream coffee creamer, then the contents from the saute` pan.Bring this to a near boil for about 12-15 minutes. Reduce the heat to a strong simmer, add in the fish, oysters, and stir in the roux; let cook for about 20 minutes. Stir in about 1 Tbsp of parsley and Coarse ground black pepper.
Now...it was good as is, but force of habit and upbringing led me to crumble a bunch of Ritz crackers in it, as well as a healthy tablespoon of ketchup.
It came out sweet tasting, with just a slight bite from the pepper and seasoning.

Musical Storytelling
Posted 8 years agoNightwish has become one of my favorite groups, so when I heard that Tuomas Holopainen has composed a score for Disney's "The Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck", well, I had to check it out. I was NOT disappointed. This is some phenomenal composition!

Linux Mint?
Posted 8 years agoAnyone have any experience with Linux Mint? I am so sick of Windows 10 that I'm on the verge of filling my computer with a pound of Tannerite and blowing it to smithereens. I've never been a big fan of Windows, but this constant updating, built in BS I can't get rid of, and having to go back and reset settings after updates is total BS. I've also committed myself to dumping my laptop's hard drive and loading Win 7 Pro.

Northern Hemisphere Pollution
Posted 9 years agoStuck at home, and getting over the effects of a cold, I wanted to look up something on climate change. I'm an engineer by trade, so I have to look at the whole picture as well as the minutiae. I also have experience controlling the environment in a controlled space (Aka the atmospheres inside a submarine) so I do know about closed and open systems.
I found this information rather interesting (especially since I've been in South Korea and seen the "Yellow fog" that rolls off China at night time.
