Well...crap.
Posted 9 years agoWork has reared it's ugly head and there will be no Mephit Furmeet for me this year, and because of the level of crap going on...my machinations to get to Midwest just went down in flames too. Gaah!
Mephit Fur Meet

Wow...talk about an overreach..
Posted 9 years agoJust saw on the news that the Mass. State Attorney General has arbitrarily revised the state's gun ban to meet her purposes. Mass has already gotten hammered over Tasers, but they're getting ready for another lawsuit that they're going to loose.
Update
Posted 9 years agoA lot of things have happened in the last week, and my last posting was borne of being upset. Those that know me know that I don't get spooked real eay. Some jerk of a troll came at me just because I've known someone for over 20 years, and only because I've known them. "Guilt by association" was used.
Normally I don't pay any attention to trolls, but this came at me from out of left field, and out of the blue. So, because my job requires it, I've let my Security manager know about it, and I've talked to a lawyer, because this was a THREAT, and if the person is in another State, then it's a Felony.
I've seen the level of crap that happens in the fandom when someone gets their dander up, and I try and steer clear of it. Drama is too much crap and it tends to either blow over or fester. Well, I'm steering clear of this. I managed to get myself out of a couple of bad situations, and slowly getting things back in order. So I don't need this...and didn't want it. I've screwed up some friendships by misunderstandings; I don't like walking on eggshells.
I WAS going to take a step back from the fandom and re-examine my art and things, but this has left a really bad taste. So, I'm going to take a few more steps back and be very cautious on things.
That's what happened.

This Sat 23 Jan
Posted 9 years agoJust a quick poll to see if anyone would like to do Dinner and a movie at my place. Thanks to the coming storm, and not getting out of work until 2-3ish, I don't think I'm going to be able to make it to Anthro New England.
So...anyone up for it?
So...anyone up for it?
The Revenent - Not your Dad's Jeremiah Johnson
Posted 10 years agoWell, just got back from watching The Revenant, and I was pleasantly surprised at this film, but the storytelling kind of left me wanting.
Now a little background information: I've been interested in Westerns and the Fur Trade era since I was about 12. I've read the stories about Johnson, Bridger, Adams, Bent, Beckwourth, Jed Smith, Glass, and others. A lot of the stories are fact, with a lot of embellishment thrown in. (A lot of history of western expansion was orally told, but there are journals and such that still survive to this day that gives a reflection into his age.) A lot of the stories have become romanticized.
Robert Redford gave us Jeremiah Johnson.
Dan Haggarty gave us Grizzly Adams.
Leonardo diCaprio is Hugh Glass, and this ain't your daddy's western!
First off, this movie is brutal and visceral. They don't pull punches, or in Glass' case, getting himself mauled by a grizzly sow. He gets a real good thrashing by that bear, and in one scene, he could have been really hurt bad. Also, the Natives in this movie actually hit with their arrows and spears. There are a lot of beautiful shots of the wilderness, and they're awesome in their own right, until you start realizing that the actors are really out there in the wilderness...in snow and freezing temperatures...and getting in and out of rivers with water cold enough to take your breath away. There is one beautiful scene where Glass is walking across this vast expanse of frozen ground surrounded by mountains. It really gives you a sense of scale of how small a person is in comparison to the rugged beauty of the wilderness...or how inhospitable it really is. What's not really clear is that DiCaprio is not walking on "solid ground" in that scene...he's on a frozen lake. (http://www.atlasofwonders.com/2016/.....locations.html)
Now...there are a few technical flubs that I caught, and the ending was changed to fit the story, but I'm not going to give spoilers. I do know that one of the technical advisers put the actors through a "mountain man boot camp" so a lot of the things they were doing was authentic as best as the movies could portray. (One of the requirements to become a member of the American Mountain Man Society is to actually live/hunt/trap/survive in the wilderness with someone who is a member.) All in all, there were a lot of good things, but like a good tall tale, it left me with a feeling of disbelief, and a sense of "Good God! Holy crap man! You just can't catch a break!"

Terrie Smith?
Posted 10 years agoOk folks,
I know that Terrie has been having health problems, but things have been pretty quiet for about 4 months. If anyone knows what's going on or if she's doing ok, please drop me a note.
Thanks!

I got a visit from the Krampus (that naughty boy!) ;)
Posted 10 years agoWishing everyone a Merry Christmas, and best wishes the best for a new year.
I got visited by the Krampus last night ( opened the mailbox and got a stack of bills...), and since I'm in a silly mood today, I present for your horror The Star Wars Holiday Special...a la Rifftrax!

Posted 10 years agoWas wondering if any of the NH area furs that don't have anyplace to go would want to do Christmas at my place?
San Bernadino Question?
Posted 10 years agoYou know, we keep hearing everything about these two radical islamists that went on the killing spree, and this and that about them. One thing is bugging the crap outta me:
What happened to the third shooter? EVERYONE was talking about the three people that did this; survivors talked about three people, and even after the two were dead, the Sheriff's Department and police were still doing a door to door search for the third gunman.
What the hell happened to him/her?
It looks like the media has dropped the ball...which is not a good thing.

Furpocalypse Alert
Posted 10 years agoJust got back from Furpocalypse, and it was brought to my attention that those who stayed at the Super 8 should take all measures to check their clothes, suits, etc for bedbugs. Someone mentioned this information and doing research online, and someone posted a review as recent as 3 October 2015 regarding the place having bedbugs.
Furpocalypse!
Posted 10 years agoWell, I'm at Furpocalypse, and I might have space in artist alley this year. Hoping that this year is fun and that things go well. I need a good time and hope to see some friends this year, and I'm working on some new stuff.
Change of place
Posted 10 years agoWell, I finally did it: I'm in a new apartment and still unpacking. This year has been a REAL PITA, and it looks like I'm going to be flying to NC/SC to be with family once again. If anyone wants my new snail addy, post me a note and I'll get it to you. Once I'm settled in, I'm hoping to start up a writers/artist night; if not a 'bad movie' night too.

Anthro New England
Posted 10 years agoDecided to go at the last moment and actually had a good time. Went out with Dook and Ralcor for some phenomenal Thai food! Got to see Daphne Lage for the first time in ages. Not a bad little con; that being said, there were a couple of problems that a growing con usually faces: first year (but run quite well), hotel room costs (One night, with parking and tax was over $200!), and dealer's room will need to be bigger.
