Sometimes an artist gets paid for a commission, and everything looks fine - but then they get stuck actually creating the work, even if it seemed trivial at the time. I've experienced situations like this. Artists are not machines, and sometimes they just get completely stuck on one piece - even if they can still produce others.

I've had two artists that I've paid in full, who never delivered. It wasn't a lot of money, in the $50 range. Eventually I just wrote it off and stayed friendly with the artists. I didn't ask for my money back, and I'm not at all bothered about it. In over 200 commissions, a failure rate of under 1% is easily tolerated.

On the other hand, I've had artists who remembered me, even two years or more after payment; and some of these works are among the finest in my collection. Some artists feel like they owe me more, just because of my patience - and the effort they put in really shows!

Overall, I prefer a hassle free relationship with the artist. I almost always pay in advance, just so I don't have to worry about my end of the deal. Then I just let them do their thing. So far it has worked for me, and I'm lucky never feeling that I've had to pursue a debt.

Sadly, I've been unemployed for over two years, and much of the supply of commission money has dried up. I do have some art that I ordered before losing my job, which I haven't posted yet. And I couldn't resist ordering a small commission a few weeks ago. So there will be something to see when I get my finger out.

Oddly, it often seems that I'm busier now than when I had paid 'work' to do. But it's a lot more enjoyable.

That was a long wait. A year and a half!

I have experienced a great deal of suffering. I'm 53 years old and for most of that time I have been suffering. Mood problems, mostly - deep depression that lasted for years.

However, the right medication (Zoloft for me) was able to relieve the depression enough for me to start thinking about things other than how depressed I felt - which only made the depression deeper.

So now I was able to think more clearly. Still far from fully clear, but better than nothing.

Fast forward 20 years.

By that time I was an alcoholic with mild brain damage - mild enough that I was still able to hold a job, sometimes even a management job. But I was slowly destroying myself all the time. Eventually I couldn't hold down the top jobs, only menial labour work.

I tried to do something. I checked into and out of detoxes and rehabs for ten years, but I always returned to drinking. That was because I was suffering. Drinking temporarily diverted my attention from my suffering, but in the long term it only made my pain worse.

I'm actually in a mental hospital right now. But the purpose of a good mental hospital is not just to put the loonies where normal people won't be bothered by them. And my hospital is one of the best in the world. (blah blah health insurance). It's like a hotel with nurses and doctors, and it specialises in problems like mine.

The purpose of a good hospital is to make sick people well. This hospital is very good at its job, and slowly I began to get better.

I've still got mild brain damage and some other problems, but the professor who lectures here tells me those problems will fix themselves in a year or two - but only if I don't drink.

While here, I began to think more clearly - though I'm still messed up a bit in my head. But those lost brain cells will mostly be replaced by fresh ones and I should be able to regain 90% or even more of my full abilities.

So, basically this message is coming to you from a brain damaged person in a mental hospital, and it might not be correct. But I think it is. I urge you to investigate it yourself.

After a long time of searching, I finally found the right answer. That answer is the right medication, the right doctors, the right psychiatrists, the right diet and the right exercise.

Plus one more thing.

After thirty years of study and practice trying to grasp the idea, I finally discovered what Buddhism is really about. It's not mystical or supernatural at all, and it's 100% compatible with modern science (which I also know a bit about, but that's another story).

Licensed, professional psychologists here are actually using basic Buddhist techniques to treat us, but they call it Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. They're using that to heal us because it works.

Buddhism is the same thing, but carried to a deeper level.

I'm much better now than I have ever been, despite the damage I've suffered along the way. That damage is just bruises and scratches and the odd fractured bone (in a mental sense), but most of them will heal if I just stop poisoning myself. I think I can do that now.

The bad news is that I still don't have a job.

The good news is that I have some investments which allow me a few spare dollars - so commissions will resume, albeit at a slower rate for now.

Just as I'd paid off all my bills, and started getting better from my illness, I was laid off from work.

This means I won't be able to commission any new art for a while, at least. Though I still have some pieces to come, that I already paid for - so don't stop watching!

Anyway, it's not too bad. I have money in the bank and I don't have to pay rent, so I can get along while looking for something new.
