STGCC and Cintiqs
Posted 11 years agoI finally got a cintiq! It's amazing! ... But at the same time pretty weird..? Basically there are pros and cons to using it, mostly pros. The cons I think, are just bugs in my body because there are quite a few physical adjustments I have to make while using it so once I work those out everything should be smooth sailing. It's a 22HD so I don't have to squint at anything but there's something about drawing at this size and not using a tablet that suddenly resulted in my brush size shooting way up. A size 10 brush now needs to be a size 40 to get the same look as when I was working on a tablet. I will have to look into that. Also keyboards are impossible. They get in the way of work and I need to shift to a much smaller, wireless version so I can tuck it away somewhere and still have access to my hotkeys.
Annnnnd my convention is this weekend. Good lord it's making me kinda nervous just thinking about it even though I've already done this twice. This round though I'm running things pretty much solo and it's not a hobby any more; this is work work stuff. Feel free to pop by my booth at Marina Bay Sands exhibition hall, September 6-7th, booth AA34.

Closing Balinese Mask Comms on the 17th
Posted 11 years agoThings are starting to get real busy here with convention prep. I've started printing out some stuff already; postcards and stickers are done. My panda toy is being shipped and I expect it to arrive with the next week or so. I've also been busy doing my book tests and I'm quite pleased with how they've turned out.
So.. final call for Balinese masks! I have time enough for a handful of them before closing down commissions on the 17th to focus entirely on convention prep.

I'll take a maximum of 10 slots for this round. Comment to claim a slot!

Last call for commissions - Sketches and Balinese Masks
Posted 11 years agoAbout to get real busy with the print prep for the upcoming STGCC so I won't have that much time to entertain commissions. I can still take a handful before things get real messy so...

Which convention to go to?
Posted 11 years agoI think I brought this up ages ago but um.. I'm thinking of going to one of these anthrocon thingies sometime soon? And I don't know which one to go to. There's no definitive con is there. I'm thinking about either having a dealer table or winging it at artist alley and I'm starting to do some research on my own logistics and accounting. I'm a little apprehensive about it because the trip won't be cheap; flying in from Asia is gonna cost me something close to 2k just to reach the states and then there's the hotel and everything else to worry about.
So... which conventions should I be considering? Anthrocon? FA United?

On Self Identity
Posted 11 years agoBeen doing lots of soul searching this year ever since I left my full time job in October 2013 and attempted to go full time freelance/independent artist. One of the things I think about sometimes is regarding style. As in art style. I don't feel like I have a particularly distinctive art style and yet friends, peers, lecturers; they've always been able to identify my work. And I'm not sure exactly what they are seeing. Is it line work? Colour choices? Ideas? Because I'm not sure how any of those are uniquely mine in the sense that I don't work with only one kind of line work style or a set of signature colours only that are undeniably 'my' colours.
I used to have students come up to me while still in school and they'd all ask me how to find their style and how I managed to find mine. And I told them all the same thing : Firstly you don't go around hunting for your style, that stuff will come to you over time. Secondly, I had no idea how I had found mine.. implying that I was still in the process of finding myself. And I think we are all constantly in the process of finding ourselves. We don't really find a style we like and go yep that's it and stick with it forever. At least, I don't think that's what people do.
I find that my stuff shifts around a lot due to necessity. Working in the studios here, I had to shuffle between styles at the drop of a hat. One day it'd be Monsters Inc stuff and the next, it would be something from Dreamworks and then it would abruptly shift to something extremely anime and chibi. At the end of the day I'd end up with a wide body of art styles... that somehow people could still tell was my own.
If any of my lovely watchers could point out what is it about how I draw that makes it my style, that would be great. Most of the time I don't even stop to think about this; I'm too busy drawing.

Iron Artist - Starting at USD20
Posted 11 years agoI am finally venturing into the world of Iron Artist to try my hand at it! I've been avoiding it for a while because of my busy schedule but I think I can probably pull this off if I do 5-10 slot batches at a time. I don't know how many in total I will be doing, I'm kinda just flowing with it. I will be doing a tiered version of this Iron Artist thing so there is a base price for a sketch but you can top up if you want to add on other things.
Full Body Sketches starting at USD20 for feral and USD25 for anthro.

Where'd all these followers come from!? Also a toy update.
Posted 11 years agoWell no matter! Hello everyone!
I hope you stay and enjoy the art! And for those following on my toy progression, I've got a 3d raw print without the paint job. I'll be getting a more finished version by the end of the week so stay tuned for that!

Being a little quiet... also, panda toys!
Posted 11 years agoBeen a little quiet here on FA and stuff, handling client work at the moment and still juggling work for the STGCC so I'll be a little all over the place.. I have sent an order out to get a prototype for my Panda toy and will have photos and everything to show you guys once it's in. Excited!
Future Iron Artist
Posted 11 years agoI've been thinking of doing an iron artist thing..? When I'm not so busy with my current load of commission/freelance work that is.
I'd only be offering sketches though, with a pencil type brush though I suppose I can give the option to upgrade the sketch to having colours as well; no inking though. Would anyone be interested? Thinking of keeping it to 20-25USD per sketch before the colour add ons...

Dental Implants!
Posted 11 years agoThis is not a good week for me!
An old tooth problem finally resurfaced and I had to get it removed. A couple years ago, I had a root canal on a problem molar that was suffering from decay that I wasn't aware of, thanks to the evasive action of my nerve endings. I had it dealt with and crowned... but the infection appears to have set in again and this time is going for my jaw bone. So.. I had to get it removed today.
The anaesthetic was a joke. .. Well ok it worked for the most part until the tooth broke and the dentist was yoinking at the infected zone at which point I was making the most unearthly sounds and was sure I had scared away all the other patients in the waiting area. Aaaand I'm due back next week so they can screw a metal piece into my skull.
Much joy. ... No actually much pain. Such ow. Very missing molar.
... I did get to bring my tooth back home for posterity though...

2014 Commissions
Posted 11 years agoOh gosh. Yes. Ok. 2014 went off with a rocky start, what with me fending off 2013 year end depression and trying to figure out what I was gonna do with myself over the next year(s) in my life. I'm super not keen on sending out resumes to any of the local companies; I've not had very good experiences working with them in general and far too many employers are looking a fairly generic anime look, something I consciously stay away from.
With that in mind, it's time to blast my resumes out of the country and again and with any luck I find some freelance work that can sustain me; hoping for a visa is a little too much at the moment, I think. I hear getting a work visa in the USA is nigh impossible right now anyway. :(
And in the mean time, I work on stuff for STGCC 2014. Let's see if I can get that designer toy idea turned into a proper prototype.
Anyway. Commissions. Slots are open. More details to be found on my commission site, as usual.

Back to Freelance
Posted 12 years agoI am away and free from my job that.. well. I'm tired of talking about it really and I don't want to think about what it did to me on a mental and physical level. So I'm back to opening commissions in a bit once I reshuffle some prices and update the website. Will be making a post on that soon.

Urgh turnarounds...
Posted 12 years agoSeriously guys I've been doing a shit ton of turnaround model sheets at work and it's driving me crazy. Front, back and side views and everything has to be super accurate so I can toss it to the modeler to play with. It's making me become really anal about proportions and certain details and shit and I guess in the long run it's good training but right now omg my head and my eyes... *flops in a corner*
My dragon is up on youtube!

I worked on this dragon concept with my art director. I did the design clean up, colour concepts and the turnaround sheet. So much fun to see this guy animated!

Commissions are closed
Posted 12 years agoI've gone off and done it and gotten too many things on my plate. Work is now in full swing now that the series I'm working on has finally taken off and so I'll have even less time to work on commissions as usual. I also want to spend some time working on my personal projects with whatever little time I can get my hands on as I'm hoping to booth again at this years STGCC. We'll see.
New Job
Posted 12 years agoHello FA.
I just got myself a new job; I'm now a concept artist at a local animation studio. Work is pretty brutal; it's a 50 hour work week and by the time I come home at about 9pm+, it's time for dinner and to sleep. I would love to draw for myself but I'm too tuckered out to do anything that requires thinking. On that note, while I'm technically not allowed to be doing commissions/freelance work, it is still open on the side and will be worked on... at a much slower pace than usual. At least until I readjust my schedule and figure out a system that works for me.
I wish I could use paint tool sai at work but it requires administrator authorization for me to even start using it. And of course everyone's really nit picky over software licenses and everything.
Zzzz...
